Jazz Bass Vs Precision Bass - can YOU tell the difference?!

  • Hey fellow Groovehacker, Scott here...
    Ok... I'm going to put YOU to the test. You up for it?
    Plus - I'm also going to reveal the winners of the Sire bass competition... yep... I'm giving away more than one.
    But before we get to that...
    In this brand new video I'm putting a Jazz bass up against a Precision bass... and I want you to guess which one is which...
    -- BUT... there's a twist!
    In this video I'm putting a P bass up against a Jazz bass neck pickup.
    There has always been a LOT of discussion to whether you can get a P bass vibe with a Jazz bass neck pickup... so, I thought I'd put this to the ULTIMATE test and see if you can tell the difference without seeing the basses!
    Ready? Let's do this...
    As always, see you in the shed... and, good luck!
    Scott :)

    Comment 3 of 3: So I was correct on both! Again, there was never a shred of doubt on my part on test 1. It was immediately apparent as that one is not even close at all.
    Test 2, however, I knew would be close, but I'm a little surprised by how difficult it was for me. Even knowing what the distinctions were going into it, waxier and more articulate vs fatter and chunkier, I still had to listen more than once. They are close enough that it was not immediately obvious to me.
    And I suppose that weighs a lot into the question of the viability of a J neck as a P surrogate. Coming into this, I always felt like the J neck was an imperfect, but roughly proximate, and therefore generally viable surrogate. Seeing how much I struggled on the blind listen even with knowing the telltale differences only makes me even more committed to that view.
    I still would much rather have both a P and a J, because no, the J stand-in is not a 100% perfect surrogate. But if I could only have one, I'd go J without a second's hesitation, because a J can get respectably close to the P sound, where a P (unless we're talking PP, which is an interesting, but wholly other conversation), can't do the same in reverse.
    Anyway, cool vid, and congrats to the winners (even though that was almost 2 1/2 years ago)! :-)
    Cheers!

    Great videos. (signed up for the emails and toolkit already.)
    Glad to see the differences between P bass and J bass covered.
    Now that leaves the following other types: Concert and the j/p bass types. Short-Short version is fine unless you really feel like a video/podcast would be more fun. :D

    I recently had my only bass stolen and have been looking in Pawn shops for an unrealistically cheap Fender Jazz -- nothing like a college budget to go off of. I'm hoping to have one of those Geddy Lee moments which stopped occurring after the Internet where you walk in and find some amazing bass that you use for the rest of your life. Anyway thanks for the videos they've really helped the learning process a lot.

    The P bass naturally has this “big dog bark” (the best I can do to explain it, lol) when you lean into it, especially on the D and G strings so it’s easy to pick out. One thing I did notice is with these 2 basses in particular, maybe it’s the instruments themselves or their setups but the J definitely had a bit of a fatter bottom end to it. Still, great video Scott, keep ‘em coming!

    Okay for test #2, I immediately thought bass #1 was the jazz, but was surprised on the lack of differences I thought I would hear. So to answer your question of "for test #2, which is the jazz bass", I'm going with bass #1.
    Enjoyed this video, btw. If I had to ask for videos, I would ask for a weekly video specifically for that week's practice. esta comparacion esta mal oviamente. si modificamos el tono de un jazz se puede parecer a un p pero jamas sonara como un p con el tono al minimo. Ademas es mucho mas gordo el sonido de un p. este video no tiene ningun valor comparativo. y lo pongo en espa;ol porque me da la gana. saludos para los que no caigan en estos enga;os. un p y un jazz son instrumentos totalmente diferentes con sonidos unicos.

    • @alejandroalcazarflores846
      @alejandroalcazarflores846 6 років тому +2

      Estoy de acuerdo, pero coincidirás conmigo en que si alguien que tiene un jazz bass (como yo) quiere conseguir un sonido parecido al de un precision, el usar solo la pastilla del mástil es la mejor alternativa a la que podemos optar, aun así cierto es que el tono de un p tiene más "punch" y no es tan agudo como el de un jazz

    • @dirtylove000
      @dirtylove000 6 років тому

      ademas las frecuencias que alcanza el p son mucho mas bajas y con mas sustain, en cambio el jazz tiene menos sustain, es mucho mas agudo y con menos punch como decis

    • @dirtylove000
      @dirtylove000 6 років тому

      mira yo tenia un p y quería lograr el sonido de unjas y compre de todo tipo de pedales y trucos y, si algo cercano logre pero luego me compre un haz y me di cuenta que no tienen nada que ver

    • @dirtylove000
      @dirtylove000 6 років тому

      mi recomendación es empezar por un jazz que es masversatil y logra acercarse mas a un p de lo que un p puede a un jazz. aunque el sonido de un buen p es unido meloso hermoso he irrepetible con un jazz

    with a little bit of eq'ing I think you can get real close between the neck of a jazz and the single pup on the P-bass.. To get a more P-bass like sound from the jazz neck,, take of a little high end, (the single coil pickup has more highs than the hum bucking P bass pickup) roll off a little of the lowest lows (50Hz) , (humbuckers compress a little the outer frequencies) ) and add a little more low mids. ...

      I love how you come into conclusions about ungratefulness.
      It was a simple misconception issue. I missed the part which he explained that he will give some away in the academy.
      He had 7 basses and he said he would give them all away, and then he only chose 3 winners for 3 basses. So my thought was that he went back on his word.
      After Regine clarified all the information for me, the misconception disappeared and saw my mistake.
      So chill and don't try to look like "the better man".

    In test A I thought the second bass sounded much deeper. When I bought my P bass they told me in the shop that for deep tone P bass is the right answer. Does a Jazz bass actually give you deeper tone?

    • @pbarre35
      @pbarre35 4 роки тому

      From my experience, both have a nice deep tone, but the P Bass is punchier and brighter with a bit of growl, while the J Bass tone is rounder and smoother. Both tones are beautiful, and I wouldn't dare claim one is better than the other because they're both unique. And that is why I own one of each 😀

  • @MrAnders1976
    @MrAnders1976 6 років тому

    In test two the P-bass have more punch and low mids.. The jazz bass neck only pickup goes deeper but less punchy low mids.. That how I hear the difference between neck only jazz and a P-bass.. But with a 10 band EQ I could probably increase the low mid and make the neck jazz pickup more punchy...

    The giveaway in test B was the playing style more than the tone; in his other Jazz v P bass video he said himself that he plays differently when he's holding a jazz bass. If he played the J bass with less funk/the way he plays P bass he could've made them sound more similar.

  • @christofyre
    @christofyre 6 років тому

    As a guitarist I'm not as sure about bass tones, so I wasn't very confident, was pretty unsure about my guesses. Pleased to say I got them both right!
    All of which just leaves me wanting to get a P-bass even more than I already did...

  • @NerdNoiseRadio
    @NerdNoiseRadio 4 роки тому

    Comment 2 of 3: Yeah, this one was tougher! I had to go back and listen again more than once. But I'm reasonably confident that the P is bass 1 and the J is bass 2.
    Bass 2 has that waxier attack that I associate with the J. Bass 1 has a slightly chunkier sound which I associate with the P. The only real pause I have is that the P is known for being bigger sounding, and at least as it renders out here on the speakers in a Pixel 4 XL smartphone, even though bass 1 does sound fuller and rounder, there is a certain "bottom bottom" end frequency that actually seems stronger on bass 2, and I wasn't expecting that on the J.
    So, I've got just a smidge of doubt. Let's resume and find out whether I'm gonna be walking away feeling vindicated or humiliated. 😂

    • @matthewmckenney1797

      How's the Pixel holding up? Went through 2 in 4 months due to factory issues.

    • @NerdNoiseRadio
      @NerdNoiseRadio 3 роки тому

      @@matthewmckenney1797 so, other than the battery draining noticably faster than it used to, and other than the gradually slowing and clunkiness that I have experienced on every single phone I've ever owned, including iPhones, it's holding up pretty well. Just got the upgrade to Android 11, and everything. Other than the amazing camera, it's really pretty unspectacular hardware, if we're being honest. Indeed, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't super tempted by the Note 20 Ultra, just for its glorious hugeness and amazing specs. But I know that after six months of Samsung software, I'd be missing the Pixel, so I think I'm okay to stick with it for now. :-) I operate in two year cycles, so I'll be sitting out the Pixel 5. Let's see what Pixel 6 is like, and I'll either re-up on Pixel, or switch to Samsung (or other) at that time.
      I'm sorry to hear about the problems you've been having with yours. Have they at least gotten you all straightened out? Back when I was on my 2XL, I had to have it replaced a couple times. But still on my first one this time around. And even though I'm on it almost non-stop, I still haven't really noticed any signs of burn-in on the screen at all. I was noticing burn-in on my first 2XL after only a week or two! So, that's a huge improvement!
      All the best! :-)

      @@NerdNoiseRadio Kind of, instead of taking another insurance claim, I decided to down grade to the LG Stylo 6 and miss everything about the Pixel 4 XL. My sister has the Pixel 3a and hasn't had any issues at all.
      Really just waiting to see what comes out in the future.

      @@matthewmckenney1797 I'm sad to hear that you had to step down, and above all, that you're missing it. Hopefully you'll get a chance to jump back on should you choose in the near future. :-)
      I definitely see the charm of the 5, no question about it! But between the smallness of it (remember, I was jonesing for something even bigger than the XL), the actual step down in CPU over the 4, and how I'd have to pay off the 4 outright before I could even trade in to begin with, I'm just gonna wait out the 6. Hopefully there will be a 6 XL.
      Also, I've heard that Google is working on their own SoC for the 6, rather than going with Snapdragon. So that's exciting! And if it turns out to be worth a damn at all, I'll be positioned so that I can jump right on it. :-)

    A is 2. They're totally different. I recognize that scooped, phased sound anywhere.

    Ha! I got it listening through only my tiny iPhone speaker! And I don't even own a P or Jazz bass. For Test A, I was listening for the characteristic scooped sound of two pickups running together to guess the Jazz bass. For Test B, I listened for the brighter open sound of a single coil to guess the Jazz, which leaves the P by process of elimination.

    the best way i can describe a jazz bass and a precision bass is 1 sounds like "POOMF" (precision bass) and the other sounds like "FWOOMP" (jazz bass) when you let the string hit the frets along with the notes you can really tell "POOMF" apart from "FWOOMP"
    Bass #1 P bass
    Bass#2 J bass
    for both tests

  • @douglasmcalexander5222
    @douglasmcalexander5222 6 років тому

    I guessed both tests correctly. I have one of each and I use the neck pickup on the J bass to get close to a P bass sound when I can only travel with one bass and I need the versatility of the J bass. I should mention that my P is a Mike Lull and my J is an MTD Beast.

    I have a 50% success rate at these, so here we go:
    Test A: J-bass was Bass 2, open highs and solid bottom end. Bass 1 was more mid heavy.
    Test B: J-bass was Bass 1, similar reasoning
    OK, so, I'm ready to get schooled...

    I thought for some reason you were doing 5 tests? Doh, I got the first 2 right. I play a 93 US Std J bass thru a 72 Traynor yea-3 tube head , and a newer Orange crush 120 thru EV 15 speakers with horns.

    Test A was obvious as jazz basses normally have a scooped sound when both pick ups are turned up, but test B got me, the jazz neck pick up seemed abit brighter than the p bass

  • @craigstreet1391

    I'm guessing bass 1 is the jazz bass. It seems to have a little more clarity in the high and low, while 2 is punchier in the middle, which is what I would expect from the pickup locations. Though I did go back and forth a couple times.

    For test A I would say that the 2nd bass was the jazz bass because it sounded a bit woolier and had less attack, I would say the same for the second test.

    Jazz base, #2. (I always get these guessing games wrong.) They sounded a little different, but not much to my ear. Both sounded like bass guitars to me. I got lucky and guessed right this time.

    Good vid...well-recorded and well-played. So many comparisons feature... 'less than stellar' recording or playing or both. I have one Jazz bass with Aguilar AG-4J Hot Noiseless pickups and one with Model Js and below about the 7th fret, it's very pretty difficult to tell them apart from a P bass. Above about the 10th fret or so, it gets easier but for folks that say you can't make a Jazz bass sound like a P bass, I'm afraid they aren't wanting to make a Jazz bass sound like a P bass.

    Bass 1 : P Bass
    Bass 2 : Jazz Bass

    Test B :
    Bass 1 : Jazz Bass
    Bass 2 : P Bass
    [2nd Edit]

  • @Diptopify

    Before looking at the results part, here are my calculated guesses :
    Test A : Bass 1 - P-bass, Bass 2 - Jazz bass
    Test B : Bass 1 - P-bass, Bass 2 - Jazz bass
    The P-bass just has a distinctive low-end rumble, while the jazz bass has a slightly more balanced, articulate tone, imo.
    Love both, of course. Thanks for the brilliant video, Scott!

    Do you have lessons for those who don't slap? Just curious because I prefer to use a pick rather than my hand to strum, because I have a tough time getting a good or even a decent sound when I do, I would imagine being that I'm a novice player would probably explain why. Haha.

  • @sleepless51
    @sleepless51 4 роки тому

    I think if you roll off a bit of the Tone form the J neck pickup, you may get something very close to the P on the same test.

  • @jesseclark4078
    @jesseclark4078 7 років тому

    The dead giveaway on P-bass tone vs J-bass tone are the lows. The neck pickup on the Jazz sounds like the bass frequency was rolled off.

  • @22fret
    @22fret 7 років тому

    The first one is simple: 1. Preci, 2. Jazz.
    I think in the 2nd test it's vice versa.
    OK, I was wrong, but that shows me, that I don't really need a P, because my Jazz sounds almost like a P on the neck pickup...

  • @hidearzo
    @hidearzo 6 років тому

    They are different, indeed. Neck J pickup seems a little bit punchier than P bass, which is more midrange, in my opinion.
    What do you think about?

  • @handidrummed
    @handidrummed 6 років тому

    I'm a huge P bass fan. I knew from the first few notes which one the P bass was. For some reason, whenever I hear a jazz, it almost makes me recoil. I don't HATE jazz basses, but when I hear a precision, something inside me says "oh yes...that's the one.." and I immediately know.
