  • Knowing your horse's body weight and getting an accurate body score is the best way to determine how much feed and hay you should be giving to your horse. Do you know how much feed and hay your horse is getting daily? Are you feeding your horse enough hay? We'll take a look at how "scoops" can hold various weights of feed, so it is important to weigh your feed in pounds. Weighing out how much hay you feed is also important as "flakes" can have many different weights.

This was an excellent video! It answered, and or confirmed, several topics that I had been wondering about during the last few weeks. Thank you for publishing it!

I was hoping your video would clearly explain how to measure the horse's length, which is my problem at the moment. Yes, unlike many videos, you explain that you start measuring the length at the center of the chest. But it's not at all clear where you end. Do you wrap the measuring tape around the butt of the horse, more-or-less to the butt crack, so that you end in the center of their behind, just as you start in the center of their chest? I would love to know this and can't find anywhere. 🙂

    Did you zero your scale?

My local extension office isn't very helpful. I can't get any return calls or emails from them even for my simple question of "do you guys do hay testing?"
I would be very interested in knowing how to calculate approximate pasture intakes for my horses. Is there any resource you could direct me to?
    Thanks! :)

There are some articles that help to give an estimate of how much pasture horses can consume, check this one out and hope it helps- ker.com/equinews/calculating-pasture-and-forage-consumption-of-horses/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CAs%20a%20general%20rule%20of,%2D15%20kg)%20of%20pasture.

Perhaps you should have SHOWN that you measured the weight of the bucket first.

Diane, thanks so much for your feedback. Showing that a cup or bucket needs to be weighed first so you can subtract that weight from the scale after adding feed or using "tare" if your scale has that, will give an accurate measurement of the weight of the feed.

Why not just tell us how many pounds in a cup. Why not just keep it simple since we all have a measuring cup in our house. So disappointed in your video!

Sorry that the video did not cover that topic, but we can certainly answer that with just a few clicks on our website, or a phone call or email to learn more. This density chart provides the weight of our feeds per a 1-quart scoop- www.triplecrownfeed.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/DensityPage_090920_web.pdf

Donienne, I just discovered it’s not as simple as just saying how many pounds are in a cup. It depends on what type of feed you are feeding because they can vary dramatically.
I learned this the hard way when I was looking for the right measure to use and discovered I needed to place tape with an arrow to the top to indicate how much feed my horse should get to equal the weight I was looking for.

She didn't tell you how many pounds are in a cup because it varies by the density of the feed. There isn't just one number. She addresses this at about the 3:00 mark in the video, which you seem to have missed, you're in such a hurry to be critical.
