  • Alameda California has a large concentration of old houses, and is particularly known for Victorian era houses. Here Denise Brady discusses how Measure A helped preserve old houses that were threatened with demolition for high density development. Alameda passed Measure A in 1973, an amendment to the city charter, and it prohibits the construction of apartment units or other multiple-dwelling homes on the Island, including condominiums and lofts.
Denise Brady suggests that this law is directly responsible for saving many old houses in Alameda, as well as preserving the unique character of the island.
