  • Dying to come to Britain: This episode takes us to the front lines of the Syrian refugee emergency in Lebanon. A country that has received over one and a half million refugees since the war began. Reporter Shaunagh Connaire went to Lebanon and found that sick refugee children are suffering and even dying while they wait for better treatment. Limited resources mean tough choices about those who are helped, and those who are left behind.

I was okay until the end. That just broke my heart! I understand that they can help thousands of people. Instead of helping just one child. But it still hurts!! 😭🤧💔 St. Jude Hospital helps families with sick children free here in America. They get donations. I wish they could have come here.

This breaks my heart, the most basic medical needs, not even blood. I wish i could do something. I'm a medical doctor, i want to help. I'm appalled, what happened to Lebanon? Lebanon used to be like the west. Advanced medicine, they were progressive and had universities, high tech hospitals. This is sad, moving back instead of forward, its absurd. I understand they went through civil war, but this state they are in now, I'm really very saddened

What happened to Lebanon? It is pretty much the only somewhat stable Arabic country nowadays. How are we supposed to deal with a population of refugees that overwhelms our actual Lebanese population? We opened our borders for all Palestinian and Syrian refugees. I don't know if you know this, but we were once conquered by the Syrian army. Also, during the Israeli invasion, Syria closed off its borders and wouldn't let refugees in. We've taken more refugees more than any other country in the world, did you know that?

It is tough. Nobody wants people to suffer but I understand that the UNCR choose people with better health to relocate because they hopefully can contribute to their new country instead of only costing money. And it is only common sense to use 20.000 dollar to help a lot of people instead of spending it on a chemo for 1 sick boy.
Don't forget that western health systems are also strained and here too are some types of chemo rejected simply because they are to expensive and they only prolong life for a limited time. More and more people over here avoid healt care because of the costs involved. So why bring in sick people who strain the system any further? That makes no sense.

    • @colleenwhitman8456
      @colleenwhitman8456 6 років тому +5

Agreed! I also have pity, but yes many western countries have our OWN citizens and children unable to get healthcare! We have taxpayers footing the bills for people all over the world, whether we like it or not. But we can look around our own country and see our own citizens homeless, hungry, unable to afford medical care, and they get NO HELP!. We have citizens who have worked and paid taxes their whole lives but they get sick or need help and cant get ANYTHING They end up homeless or die too. People want us to be an endless bank account and dont realize we cant save everyone....its sad but its a fact of life..

I was born here I did not beg to come here, I am completely entitled to being here. Colour of skin or religion has nothing to do with that, try speaking like that on TV and see where it gets you. That's fine you can hate us all, it's so funny how u think we are all connected...should I go tell my so called Muslim brothers terrorists what you been saying? Your a moron we are not connected and all these people doing violent things around the world are even less of a Muslim than you my friend. Your clearly racist and I really dont understand why? @@07940657202 You are down right rude, nasty, dirty, disrespectful and outright bias. Yes, we Americans want to help, who is always running from country to country, regardless of the hate against us as you so disgustingly communicated. I myself is deep in debt due to health cost and will no longer go to the doctor, unless I have no other choice. Yet at the same time I'm trying to think of ways to help these poor children. You called my newly found country a dump, well I'm proud to live here. Also, why are so many from every corner of the world are fighting and dying to get here, if it was such a dump as you say? Jealous you are, but America cannot save the world. Only Jesus can, who you need to get to know. He alone can clean out the filthiness inside of you, as you've displayed 6 months ago. Your attitude is beyond low. Also, you talk about white men running our country. Something has to give. Having both of those standards is creating a serious humanitarian crisis for a minority population. It is discriminating against, and exterminating, families with real health crises that need the most attention from BOTH relocation countries AND healthcare.
It is a war of ethics that is occurring and the more paralyzed that Lebanon becomes when it comes to choosing a strategy, the more it becomes a bystanding crime against humanity.

When I see opportunists refugees that are able bodied men complaining about their treatment while receiving food, water and shelter makes me angry. These desperate families with very ill children are the refugees that need to be resettled. Not able bodied healthy young men who are looking for opportunities.

It's cruel how they leave the sickest children left waiting to meet their fate but the prioritisation schemes are logical for an organization wanting to save more. I'm not on side with how the UNCR handles children like them and I think even the spokesperson doesn't like that too. If the UNCR doesn't get enough funding then children who suffer very bad conditions won't live a good life. May God bless these people.

To find out why the UNHCR hasn't funded his treatment? You already said why... The treatment is costly, and money is a limited resource, therefore they see spending the money on food to save many lives rather than a single life is the morally correct option.
Think of the moral experiment where you have a train going towards a group of five people on the track, and you have the option to pull a lever to divert the train but there is one person on the track where you will divert the train. Except for this anology to work, this time a lack of action no longer means that the train will continue and hit the group of five, it means that the train will separate and go down both tracks, killing all six people. You have a choice to stop the separation of the train and make it stay on one track, which track do you choose the one with a single person or the one with a group of five?
Personally, I would rather see one life lost than five lives lost.

This has NOTHING to do with " not wanting to waste money ". Many of those countries have VERY sick children too and can not get services for those children already living there? There are sick and dying people all over the world, and that not EVERYONE can be saved? Do you realise there is NOT an endless supply of money - so there is not always enough to help everyone? Instead of YOU blaming OTHERS for not doing/giving enough, maybe YOU SHOULD give all YOUR money to these children so they get help! The TAXPAYERS from countries that take in these families in are already taxed beyond belief! The TAXPAYERS from countries taking these families in can look around their own countries and see CITIZENS who have no food, no place to live, or sick children who cant get medical care and YOU COMPLAIN that THEY don't do enough...thats a disgusting way for you to talk about countries who are spending BILLIONS of dollars to help refugees..

Why do they HAVE to come to Britain for treatment?? There are plenty of other European countries where they can get the treatment. I don't blame anyone for wanting to improve their own lives, especially if coming from a warzone. But I do not see why they HAVE to come to Britain.

Because they are more welcoming and easier to assimilate to than a lot of other countries...there is already a large Syrian community there...lots of reasons.
They don't HAVE to...just the one that is most likely not to reject their application.

I guess after seeing two shows of children dying of hunger in Yemen this is not having the impact it would have had were I to have seen this first. Also living in the US has jaded me a bit about healthcare though I recognize that universal healthcare is a basic right and that it is my country that is wrong not those who do provide care. It is just so common for a person to go without treatment in the USA that it is hard to see it as a pressing issue. Though of course we are not undergoing a war on our land as of yet anyhow..I am in no way saying this child should not get care just that I am a bit jaded living in a country that allows simple things to cause life long disability and will only treat you if it is immediately life threatening..

Grow up! We're living in the 21. century!
Why should anyone show respect for peoples who rape and kill their neighbors, because of a barbaric, stoneage religion?
A religion invented by greedy, power-hungry men, to suppress, to conquer and to rule?
