  • In this video, Bounty Archive binds an original design using delightfully specific tools and clever techniques. In the antique bookstores of Tokyo's Jimbocho neighborhood, I saw thousands of artifact-looking books wrapped in a hard case held closed with bone-clasps. This style of case design (more specifically the idea of a book having its own box) lended an even further aura of importance to these classic bindings. I was inspired to experiment with this concept using my own unique closure-mechanism. Also fascinating was the overlap of the two covers over the book within. I considered all the ways that these two covers could interact with each other, and decided to try overlapping acetate windows whose colors would make a blended venn diagram at their intersection. This intention was slightly foiled by my choice of darker, less reflective cover material and liner papers. This video marks the debut of my NT Circular Cutter, which was instrumental in the production of this book.
If you look closely, you will note 6 or 7 outfit changes in this video. No matter how long it takes, making a book is an endless source of joy.

All of my books are created on location in my apartment in New York City. I hope that you enjoy the sights, sounds, and general sensations evoked by this ASMR video, to which I've added no music. While this is not intended to be a tutorial, you may feel inspired and/or challenged to use some of the featured techniques to make something functional and beautiful. I hope this is the case.
If you have questions about this process, materials, or bookbinding, just ask me in the comments. I read them all, and I try to reply as soon as possible.

I find myself once again with the pleasure of observing what it takes to create a masterpiece at the hands of Bounty Archive. In just 16 short minutes, the detailed shots take us on a journey, accompanied by the sounds of mechanical tooling, paper texture, and organic precision. We find ourselves asking not “what if,” but “how?” The international travels to far lands bring back knowledge that we all wish to attain and practice through hours of experimental, yet tested bookbinding techniques. This dedication to craft is evident in what we witness on this UA-cam page. As the glue adheres to the variety of textured surfaces displayed in the video, we come to understand a simple truth: great work is achieved through constant improvement.
Success is measured not in quantity, but in quality. Thumbs up from me on this one.

I had a really good teacher in my exchange institution who taught me everything I know about bookbinding. I’ve used some elements of that during my bachelor, and this video inspired me to implement more in the upcoming masters course. Thank you!

They look really cool, but just out of curiosity what function do the blue and yellow windows serve? I have never owned a book case like that, or really seen one until this video.

Thank you for the kind words! The windows have no functional purpose as it relates to holding the book. They simply are artistic elements of the design.

Details on the circular Leather weight?

Ah yes, that ol thing? I have no idea what the material inside is (hopefully not lead) but it is quite dense and almost certainly metalloid. Two thin layers of brushed suede are sewn around it. Feels very nice in the hand. Thank you for inquiring, viewer.

I'm afraid this is 1/1. I typically have other books I've made on my website.
