You're never too old!!!! GO Dorothy Donegan!! You are great!!!!JMH
Had a chance to meet her when I was a young man at my uncle's jazz club in NYC and hear her play live. A true prodigy and genius on the ivory and such a fun loving person.
Your a lucky man 😮😮😮😮😮
@@SmoothCriminaltripleOG What an amazing personality Dorothy had.
@@eugeneweston3891 I’ve just stumbled across her videos and I have to say she’s is amazing. You can see how she plays that she has a huge personality and what a voice too, she’s the real deal. Truly a talent that should be remembered and cherished. The first time I saw her was on a show where she did a billy holiday impression, omg I was floored by this woman’s voice let alone her talent on the piano. 👍👍
@@SmoothCriminaltripleOG An amazing talent and genuinely an under-appreciated American musical treasure
Every now and then , someone turns up who transcends the limitations . She is one of them. But she worked for it. Inborn talent takes you only so far.❤👏🙌🌹j.
Forgive us Dorothy! At now, see as far you are great! Seen you 1944, know Gene Rogers and guess who he was for you… we’ll explain there)) I love you.
Proof when you're born with talent, you never lose it!
Legend of the instrument!
She is really amazing piano player!
Alex G
INCREIBLE!!!!!!
Great!!
I Can't Get Started after an intro with a bit of Here's That Rainy Day. Then a boogie-woogie with an interlude of London Bridge is Falling Down. How musically entertaining.
That intro is Gold. A comedian as well
I AM SO DAZZLED! 😮
Infuckingcredible. Love it!
Where has this woman been all my life?
just Beautiful
A master at the instrument! Plus, the way she uses her looks and the way she communicates with the audience alongside her playing is breathtaking: 1:59 She is seducing the audience with her eyes and her body movements....
Una genia maravillosa y divertida ❤❤❤
Magnificent !
Good stuff?! NO!! magnificent and unforgettable!!
She has too much fun!
LOVE THIS!!!
i never heard "here's that rainy day" played like this - BRAVA!
"Did I get the. . . " Man, I want to have a drink with her. She would have some stories. And it's hard to tell where she begins and the piano ends.
Damn, this is just sick. Respect and RIP.
Her whole demeanor screams
" Character." Gotta love it !
(Not to mention her amazing playing).
Je l'adore..; elle est géniale! pas besoin de compléments alimentaires pour avoir la pêche.; il suffit de la voir sur scène et l'enthousiasme nous gagne instantanément!
"Did I get the Job?"....Hah. Yes indeed. Skillzzzzz. Respect up.
OMG...amazing.
People, write! Don’t be indifferent!
When you got it, you got it!!! And, it shows at any age. God blessed Dorothy.
Shame on me but I'd never heard of Dorothy. Her playing is absolutely brilliant : a virtuoso with a great sense of fun. I bet she had some stories to tell. I would have loved to go for a few drinks with her but unfortunately she died of cancer in 1998. She was also a protege of Art Tatum.
Why are all the greats no longer with us? We're left with musical messes who make mega money by making me sick. Wow!
Because we accept this garbage as good music. Hell, not even "good" music! Duke Ellington used to say that there are only 2 types of music, good and bad. It seems we've gotten away from that philosophy. Unfortunately.
Leonard Poopsie I hope I've misunderstood you. Are you really describing Dorothy Donegan's playing here as "this garbage"???!!!
I can see that I need to clarify my statement. Ms. Donegan would classify as the "good" type of Music.
A'Doris A We have lost many stars, but there are new ones! Diana Krall, Jamie Cullum, Joey Alexander and also in the field of Boogie/Blues there are many top Pianists;)
Was it Art Tatum who suggested he should keep practicing in the light of Dorothy??
just great
She has bouts that are disparate and chaotic yet coherent and musical.
Yooooo she starts playing Rachmaninoff's humoresque in g before she entered the swing
robert robinson You are correct!
It don't get much better kids.
Here is the translation from Google (I was curious too. It's in Russian) Divine Dorothy. One and only in the heights of jazz's glory days.
The pleasure to serve her Live performances with nothing can be compared.....and the communication with the audience is not to be imitated..
She was among the best...
Even with colon cancer, her talent was still intact, powerful and unapologetic 🤎🤎
I had the opportunity to sit watch her play on a recording session for Bricktop in NYC in 1978. She was incredible.
Rachmaninoff Humoresque in G... She is the GREATEST! #ThatEar
Она прекрасна ❤️
If Art Tatum is the King of jazz, Dorothy Donegan is the Queen indeed!
Saw d. D inperson inrichmondvain about1980s
Своим образом напоминает нашу Фаину РАНЕВСКУЮ... Блистательна!
Я подумал, Шапокляк полезла в сумку за крыской! (Шутка!) Шикарная бабуся!!!
взрывные буги-вуги....
Can someone say SOUL!
Anyone else spot the Rachmaninov quote? 🙂
I met her once
Did I get the job?
1:40 rachmaninoff humoresque
Wow! Quite an amazing jazz discovery! Still, Hazel Scott was even more incredible, and you must check her out!!
Hazel Scott was fabulous, but no need to compare. They are both jazz masters.
,
Wha?
reminiscens of Oscar Peterson maybe...
kinda'. i think she was more versatile in style. however, oscar might have her beat with his riffs
@@divingchicago I was lucky enough to see her twice, she was every bit the musician O.P. was and would have matched him in technique. The problem with Dorothy as she was a woman in a male-dominated jazz world. So in order to make a living, she also resorted to clowning and became at times more entertainer than complete jazz pianist.
