    Dude, this is gonna help me take the leap and finally paint my death guard. Super new to painting minis and the death guard have honestly been a bit intimidating to try painting lol. Gonna give this a try though.

      That's awesome mate, great to hear 😃👍 Death guard were the second faction I ever painted but easily the most enjoyable, because any little mistake is just "weathering" and in part with lore 😄. Welcome to the hobby!

    Would love to see a sponged night lord! I've been using your sons of horus video to finally finish up my SoH army and am likely starting night lords soon :)

      That's a great suggestion, Night Lords are fantastic candidates for sponge, the texture will match them really well. They've been on my list to do, but need to find the time and the right model for them. It's awesome to hear! Honestly, it's amazing knowing some of this stuff actually gets put to use.

    This method just made my decision on what army to choose coming back to warhammer 40K!!! Thank you man!!!
    PS: I hate to ask such a noob question, but I’ve seen many sponge methods.. when you use a sponge, what is the clamp you use? Also, what kind of sponge actually is it? Like a regular dish sponge or a makeup sponge?

    • @AnotherDayMiniatures
      @AnotherDayMiniatures  4 місяці тому +1

      @Harrishharris5100 Death Guard were my second army to ever paint and they are just awesome to paint. Any mistake you make is just extra "weathering" 😄. The clamps are called 'Reverse Tweezers' they are commonly used in electronics. The sponge I personally use is often called an art sponge, they have a synthetic texture and tend to be sold in art stores. I think it's also often used in car washing. Best of luck mate!

    Another well earned like 😅 I'm trying to figure how to use your step by step on a larger model like a wardog... do you think I'd rather sponge all the mini or use the brush for all the metalic parts, like the "skeleton" of a wardog? Before the steaking grime I mean

    • @AnotherDayMiniatures
      @AnotherDayMiniatures  11 місяців тому

      Thanks 😃 It honestly depends on the look you'd like to achieve. Last time I painted a Titan I did the entire skeleton with a dry brush. Then airbrushed the panels to give them a base tone, and then sponged all the panels to give them a cool texture. Then came back in with some metallic with a brush to give the panels a cleaner look, and finally applied the streaking grime.

    Hey! Just came across your short for this Deathguard and it was awesome to see the longer process with a bit more detail. Im pretty new to mini painting and the only thing i could see me messing up is getting too much paint on the sponge and obscuring some detail. But I'm sure it's just gonna take a few tries, and will be easy enough to fix.
    I love coming across new techniques to try out and this looks awesome and should be fun to try! Thanks for the upload, new sub here.

      Thank you for the kind words. Fantastic knowing new people are getting into it. Definitely work more wet and that way you'll have thinner layers. As you get used to it, you can go for thicker layers. Start off with little pressure and with each dab try adding more, until you see the results you think looks good. 😀🤞 Just like with anything else the road to success will be filled with mistakes, don't get discouraged and press on!

      @@AnotherDayMiniatures oh don't worry, I'm having a blast, I won't get discouraged. This has gotta be my new favorite hobby, super relaxing. Especially while listening to 40k lore.
      Anyways I just bought a huge box of D&D misprints, which have like a missing finger here or broken sword there for super cheap. I'm having a great time practicing on em and trying new stuff. Hope to be ready by the time I can afford a larger 40k box.

      @@Nyctonaut There's actually some really affordable 40k stuff you can get at thetrolltrader(dot)com they ship from UK so it takes a bit, but you can get some character models such as Necron Overlord for about 6$, prices tend to depend on how popular something is. Their website is also a literal maze to navigate but if you got time, you can find awesome deals there.

    • @Nyctonaut
      @Nyctonaut 11 місяців тому +2

      @AnotherDayMiniatures That's a great lead, thanks! I'll definitely check it out. Yeah, it's a little discouraging to come into the hobby at such a high price point (I know 40k has always been considered expensive, but from my research it's only gotten worse the last few years), but I love it so much that I'll just have to find the deals. Really thinking about starting with Kill Team, it looks fun and a bit more accessible than building a full proper 40k army.

    What sort of sponge did you use for this? This is a challenge I want to try for myself, but I haven'd had much success with the sponges I used. Do you need to rip it to get the desired shape?

    • @AnotherDayMiniatures

    Do you reckon sponge painting would work on T'au? From Fire Warriors all the way up to their biggest battlesuit?

    • @AnotherDayMiniatures
      @AnotherDayMiniatures  4 місяці тому

      I have tested it on smaller models, and personally, I found that they are too small. The biggest issue is trying to get the sponge under all the arms and other details that are hard to reach. The battle suits should be great though.

    Question how long do you usually wait for the streaking grim to dry and what color grime did you use?

    • @AnotherDayMiniatures
      @AnotherDayMiniatures  11 місяців тому +1

      It's AK Streaking Grime, just that, I think it was the first grime they made so it doesn't have an additional name. I usually wait for the streaking grime to no longer be visibly wet but here in the second pass of grime I started cleaning it almost right away 👍

  • @Finding_Arcadia

    I really do love how you use the sponge, but I'm curious how would it tackle a more detailed model like an admech or similar? Would you still sponge, or primarily use a detail brush

    • @AnotherDayMiniatures
      @AnotherDayMiniatures  11 місяців тому +1

      Honestly would just use a brush there. Sponge in my opinion is amazing tool for large flat surfaces, but something smaller than a space marine you're working against yourself. That's not to say you can't find really good uses for it, if you don't have an airbrush its a really good way to apply a base color to your model. For admech you could sponge on the red base really fast. Then go in with a brush and do the details and metallics.

    • @Finding_Arcadia
      @Finding_Arcadia 11 місяців тому +1

      @@AnotherDayMiniatures that's pretty much what I was thinking too, sponge to block off the areas like a sketch then washes and detail brushing to clean it up.
      One more question if you got the time, what do you do with the sponge bits after use? I assume they could be washed and reused, but do you prefer to just rip each painting sesh and trash to avoid clean up? Just curious more than anything

    • @AnotherDayMiniatures
      @AnotherDayMiniatures  11 місяців тому +1

      At first I did make attempts at washing them, however there would always be a bit of paint left in them. The amount of time and soap use was also brutal, in the end I started using smaller sponge bits and threw them out. It's surprising how many minis a single sponge can paint.

    could i achieve a similar effect as streaking grime by using a brown ink? or a heavily diluted brown contrast or agrax earthshde wash?

    • @AnotherDayMiniatures
      @AnotherDayMiniatures  11 місяців тому

      I've attempted multiple times but never got it to work, it's definitely possible there's some way I'm not aware of. You could paint it to look similar using only acrylics, but that process would be very different. Another alternative is oil paints, that's the only one that can get a similar result as far as I'm aware.
