In today's episode, we're in the fab shop at V8 Speed and Resto fabricating a custom firewall for a 1979 Pontiac Trans Am. The goal is to address rust issues, fix previous damage, and enhance the overall appearance under the hood.
The original floorboard replacement didn't extend high enough to fully cover the rust, and the factory stamping had some unappealing imperfections. We decided to cut out the affected area and create a more visually appealing piece that complements the car's aesthetics without altering the entire undercarriage.
Key Points:
Material selection: 20-gauge sheet steel for its strength and workability
Step roll pattern: Adds strength, creates a visual break, and enhances the industrial look
Bead rolling technique: Using the Mittler Brothers bead roller to create a custom pattern
Panel preparation: Pre-stretching the metal to prevent distortion during bead rolling
Electric bead roller: Variable speed and forward/reverse operation for precise control
Corner shaping: Addressing shrinking and stretching around the pattern corners
Edge rounding: Using a Pullmax with radius dies for a smooth transition to adjacent panels
Panel installation: Utilizing magnets for flush fitment and clamps for secure attachment
Welding: Tack welding, seam welding, and grinding for a seamless finish
Additional Notes:
Rust prevention: Applying rust-resistant primer and paint to protect the new firewall
Wiring and hoses: Accommodating future wiring and hoses without compromising the visual appeal
Overall design: Maintaining a cohesive look with the rest of the under-hood components
This custom firewall project demonstrates the importance of careful planning, precise fabrication techniques, and attention to detail when restoring classic vehicles. By addressing rust issues, enhancing the appearance, and ensuring compatibility with future modifications, we're contributing to the preservation and enjoyment of this iconic Trans Am.

Your bead rolling skills border on art. I glad I watched your vedio and hope to enjoy many more. Thank You! JD
Glad you enjoyed it!
Професійне обладнання . Чудова робота.
Beautiful Work! Love the Pullmax work - please do more!
Thank you! Will do!
John Moss, I loved this video and your work. Many other vids waste time on the un-important and then short-change on the important. Yours is the reverse and slows down and magnifies the important stuff - well done. From here in the UK, it's quaint to to hear a young guy like you give us "...3/32"..."! On a more practical level, it might be useful to add to all your good information that, if the joggle you're looking to add is more visual than structural, little more that the metal thickness can give the effect you're looking for.
Well done video by a talented fabricator that can teach as well as build
Lovely rolling work, very impressive.
Thanks I learned something about my Mittler Bros. bead roller, and you did nice work!
Hopefully Rob Dahm and Isaiah see this soon!
Nice work 👍 what was the bottom roller used on the Mittler? I heard you say something about it but didn’t quite catch it, Thanks 👍
Very nice job 👍
Can i know what lower die and size did u use top one is a tipping die i believe but the top one ?
It's great , we learned new things! Could you please let me know what's the name for the machine you use to fold the edges?
What are your thoughts on using Silicon Bronze heliarc based instead of MIG?
Perfeito
What upper and lower dies where you using? I am also trying to replicate that same style joggle. I noticed the top was a tipping die but what about the lower?
The Tyler Dale Project same thing I was wondering Tyler
Looks like a small 1/2" male tank roll die with a tipping/art roll upper die
👍😎
Sir this possible in 1.5 mm thickness stainless steel
So is this build's objective to look like a factory produced (modern) trans-am, or is it a restomod?
+Dietrich Hoefer it’s going to have mods done.
Mods done...
thats the catch phrase that made me wanna toss all my tools into the lake down the road...
Scratching my head after seeing that why it's not getting a full paint job.
