- Testing a 1988 Amstrad PC model PC2086 8mhz, CPU intel 8086, 640kb, 20mb HDD, 720k floppy, VGA color monitor. (Paradise VGA 640x480x256 )
I test two Dos games running under windows (lemmings and Prince of Persia) and some Windows tools (solitaire and paintbrush)
Games work better directly with DOS, but system was forced to run Windows 3.0, Originally it comes with MS-Dos 3.22 and Windows 2. -
640kb is enough for everyone.
For everyone I don't know, but for me it is.
i love real mode

Squeezing every last bit out of that poor 8086 CPU... interesting to watch! :-)
Knowing the architecture and flaws of this very first installment of the x86 line, I can imagine what must be going on in the ALU and on the bus while that poor thing was drawing the Solitaire cards. :-)
An 8086 with a VGA card. Now there's something you don't see every day.
I've still got mine up in the loft/attic.
I love those 80s computer boot up sounds !
+3dfx
Me too!! and 30s songs are great!
Do modern computers boot up with another sounds?
And YOU are from the 90s!
@kittygirl 2016 NOOB is you.
@kittygirl 2016 Windows 10 is POOP

Wow this computer was made in 1988?? This computer looks very impressive for it's time! Looks more like a computer from 1991 or 1992
yes, i think this have been sold until 1992-1993
Looks like something my Mom bought, only she bought an "XT" thinking she had a "286".
I will never forget the amstrad 8086 we had. It was our first jump onto the internet using the 300baud phone cradle logging into GENIE and Compuserve. I can remember when my parents bought the 20MB hard card for it as a Christmas gift for me and my brother ( cost them a bundle )
Mike P awesome!! Internet on the amstrad! I also installed the 20mb hd as a birthday present from parents
Man, the sound of that thing running! I just realized it had been years since I've heard a system that sounded like that---the combination of sound from the old HDD and fans (primarily the HDD). Thanks.
Thanks, it really feels like old days
This was my first computer, back in 1989. Date and time were kept with 4 regular AA batteries under the monitor stand. I think that HDD was 30MB, not 20. The volume pot for PC-speaker was great. When I switched to a clonic 80486 I missed this a lot and I built a potentiometer to attenuate sounds. This "beast" had a Paradise graphics chip with an amazing 640×400 256 color mode but it was sooo slow at this mode that it was just a promotional catch (anyone can remember Tutankamon mask in promo flyers). I still have this computer in the garage.
+Chungalin Nice story!
+Chungalin Same as me! (Well, it was my dads)
Interesting trivia, if you were going to move the PC, you had to run a command in the dos prompt called "Park" which parked the heads of the hard drive to make it safe to move without losing any of your 30mb data.
+SteveM Right, I forgot to say this in my comment. Few years later all HDD parked their heads automatically on power off. I remember I ran "park" almost everyday before shutting down computer, just in case...
Another trivia about this computer: BIOS kept last date/time it was used, and showed this timestamp on cold boot ("Last used on..."). It didn’t show with just a Reset. It was useful to know if someone else used the computer.
I remember 'park'ing the heads lol
@@lloydroseblade5448 I remember not parking it once. And since then I've always been treating HDDs like raw eggs.
Nowadays even SSDs, which I know is utterly ridiculous, but I can't stop it :D
The mouse problem is an artifact of the way Amstrad implemented their mouse. The mouse buttons are handled via the keyboard interface and handed back to the system by their ms mouse compatible driver. Games that bypass the mouse driver won't work correctly with it, but will recognise a standard serial mouse.
(obviously a serial mouse has to go in a serial port, though, not the Amstrad mouse port)
ahh i was always wondering why i could use the mouse in gem but not in dos games
@@redpandacafegaming8982 In theory, It should work in DOS games too, so long as it's using Amstrad's MOUSE.COM, but that's not always perfectly compatible.
@@TheTurnipKing icic.. i vividly remember trying to run a program for the mouse (can't remember if it was mouse.com or not), i think it was to play secret of monkey island, but no success.. so just put it down to being a gem only thing back then xD ... man i loved those 4 coloured diskettes, i think i still have the amstrad manual in storage :P
That thing sounds like a forklift going in reverse
These were the chronicles where the amiga 500 was the target computer for everyone who liked video games! Amiga 500 well ahead of its time.
God, I remember how non-standard these things were. Proprietary motherboard layout, weird VGA connector. Even the keyboard connector was not a standard AT design at the time - required separate ISA cards for standard keyboards and VGA monitors. Anyone remember using Duracell batteries to keep the BIOS alive? If they went flat or were disconnected, these things could not be booted unless you had the Amstrad recovery floppy disks. (I'm basing all this on the similar Amstrad 2386 I owned)
And that HDD squeak and whine as it booted was so familiar and nostalgic. Thanks!
you welcome!
Oh you owned the top of the line 2386? i remember it has a 80386 cpu at 25mhz.
One time I had a isa video card , but hard to use in this non-standad motherboard.
Can't use standard keyboard, and standard serial mouse on this computer.
Thanks for watching and comment!

Nice design, I remember it.
btw I didn't knew that lemmings could run on 8086!!! Looks great.
Yes! When game where nice optimized !!
Was one of my favourite games on it!
Wasnt the 8086 used in some old gaming machines? Or am I thinking of something else?
Cuantas horas he jugado!
Clearly a slow system. But the fact that it can run Windows 3.0 with only 640k of RAM is amazing! Great video man.
+Computer Associates Thank you! Take a look new video i uploaded of this computer running native Windows 2.03. ua-cam.com/video/qKkABzt0Zqg/v-deo.html
That brings back memories.
That roaring sound of the fans and rattling hard disks.
And especially that waiting and waiting.
I spent a lot off money to make the PC quieter and faster. New fans, new motherboard new memory new hard disk in that time i spend $2000 for rebuild it to a new computer.
That were other times +/- 1988
Ah those sounds of this machine bring me back.
The awesome sounds of an old mfm hard drive
I used the same one with double floppy drives in our community center, it was the first machine when I did learn programming and enjoy gaming. Such awesome times
AbdelKarim BenAbdallah Oui this windows 3.0 rubbis you're running
I remember this!! :-D I grew up playing a lot of Prince of Persia. And Lemmings, etc.ect. Operation Wolf was great too ^_^
Nostalgia...
Mas para época uma sensação haha

incrível como ainda exite essas máquinas e ainda funcionando.
Loving the table cloth.

4:21 I love that buggy text line at the top of the screen 😀
Love hearing that chirps notification sound on my right headphone
So lucky, i've been trying to find an 8086 computer still operational for years. Plenty of 8088's, no 8086's
Aaaaah
Good ole days!
Great computer! My family had a Compaq Deskpro with the 8086 processor and an amber monochrome monitor. From what I understand the 8086 came out first and is actually superior to the 8088. The 8088 was basically a reduced price 8086. Has something to do with the 8086 being 16 bit and the 8088 being 8 bit. I remember ours would run at either 4.7 mhz or approximately 7 mhz in turbo mode. The sound of your Amstrad running brings back memories!
Both the 8086 and 8088 are 16 bit. You must be thinking of the 8080 which was 8-bit
@@IgorMgtowandVideoGamesThe 8088 is 16 bits internally but only has an 8 bit data bus. The 8086 has a 16 bit data bus.
Wow, I miss the sounds PC's used to make back in the day....
I had one of these as a first computer. They came with a few options of monitors. The option of a monocrome or colour 12" monitors or with the 14" was a standed monitor with a TV CRT or the high resilution CRT computer monitor with the computer.
640 K RAM ,that wonderful times of my childhood...:-)
Like the first PC that was given to me for free in 1996, LOL.
this gamer set is looking awesome
I can't believe such a slow CPU was being sold in 1988.
I guess it was all about low cost and high volume for Amstrad at the time.
It was normal in entry level computers of the time. And it's at least 8mhz, not the old 4,77mhz.
The intel I80386 was out back then . But far more expensive
The 386 was more known for being an early to mid 90's computer. It would have been quite expensive when it first came out.
Back in those days most households wouldn't have a PC at all. Those who did most of the times did have XT's or 286's at best. 386's were extremely expensive back in those days.
@@TheTechGuyYT ,,yeah..386 it was on the amstrad line,, it was very very expensive!. I had this 2086 and...for the time it was expensive too....i remember ataris, spectrums with casette, basic game consonlas at some house friends ,,my pc it was an incredible modern thing at the time...
I still have my Amstrad PC 2086 D with a Tandy 40 Meg HD, I might have to pull it out and see if the DOS shell is still on it
What was the best PC, printer, and word processor (e.g. WordPerfect, Microsoft Word) combination that you could get in 1988? Something that would have been good for typing up school/university assignments, saving them on removable disc, and printing them out.
I love watching videos about old computers. What do you think about Microsoft windows 3.0 i can do a lots of presentation there is accessable that programme on that computer?
I had one of those with MS-Dos Shell, and played Links, F15, Commander Keen 4, Prince of Persia and Lemmings. I was like 5 years old at the time and those guillotine blades in PoP scared the shit out of me.
That’s quite impressive to see an 8086-based PC display Windows 3.0 at 640*400 resolution at 256 colors. I imagine that the generic 640*480*16 color VGA driver would run faster (and free up some much needed RAM.)
Have you considered MS-DOS 3.3x or 5.0 instead of 6.22 to free up even more RAM?
Cool to see VGA and a 3.5" drive on a 8086
Still faster than my Bloatsoft windows 10 on 5400 rpm HDD
Do you load the apps from hdd or fdd? Sounds like fdd and the loading times suggests its fdd.
Back in those days I was using a Commodore 64/128, I may have had my Amiga 500 by that time, boy how far we've come
Such a beautiful computer
commander keen, you guys remember that game?
That pro gaming lap!
now this is when things started to be good
omg, its hard to realize this wasn't to long ago
Oh wow I had one of these, back in the early 90s I think... Good memories...
yes, goood old computer times, magic feels
My friends mouths dropped in 1989, when my Grandma bought for the family, an Olivetti 286 with an absolutely whopping 10 Megabytes hdd. I was able to store a whole floppy disk of games…On the HDD. My life changed that day.
Thank God those days are long gone!
Gracias
install a SSD and fly...
The sata ide converter is working but the 8086 is slow for w3.0 and the graphics adapter too....
Into a bottleneck
Gracias por el video, que recuerdos ;)
De nada, gracias a ti por verlo :)
Remember it well, especially the sounds when you first switch it on. Had a 32MB MFM/RLL Hdd in it, ran at 4.77 MHz if I recall correctly
It's weird how the hard drive sounds like a floppy drive?
It's probably a pre-IDE hard drive, folks!
What do you mean by "the system was forced to run Windows 3.0"? I read that on the description and I'm really curious.
I speak spanish by the way XD.
love this pc , how much u sell it?
This thing is causing acoustic trauma on me. I guess on a dB scale an army tank sounds quieter.
That hard drive makes a few odd noises when it's initialising. I love the sounds of those old MFM or RLL hard drives when they're seeking. Such an awesome sound.
Hey, it's Lemmings! good taste, sir.
4:13 start lemmings
5:24 level 1
-5 sec for choosing machine type
~70 sec of loading time. it really reminds me of how slow those old computer was. it's an 8086 after all!
edit: the solitaire "loading" screen lol
Excellent great video
Thanks
Flying back via time machine!
Man this brings back memories. Turn on computer, go do other stuff, come back and its loaded.
Wow! It takes *that* long to fill the screen gray!
Super! Que des bons souvenirs
this was my very first PC which I got in 1993.
It was pretty much useless as the screen was badly burnt and the mouse didnt work.
I think my monitor was EGA but I couldnt tell because of how burnt the CRT was.
Lindo demais!!
This is the best computer in the known universe! The key of a true computer professional, it runs software more smoothly than anything in the world! Windows runs with low ram, but it just works fine, don't need dlcs to play the games, no need updates to fix bugs. That's programming best practices. And MS-DOS has now an integrated User Interface! It's magnificient, this sounds great, brought some memorable memories. I can even smell it on the computer screen. 640*480 forced to run in an old amstrad, CPU can't even handle it. I love Lemmings and Prince of Persia with all those colors showing up to screen. No more need to buy an Ipad. You have all that for less money (Mouse included for just 200 bucks).
Paintbrush was our prefered software at the time, way better than paint!
We like most processors from the 80's, processors than can move more data than only A DOS GUI like windows 3.1!
Hey, I was just wondering, what's that chirping noise
lo impresionante es que aun ande
can you upload friendlyware on amstrad
Do you still have this computer and does it still work as of 2020? True or False
Sound is very good
Liking just for the hard drive sound. My first PC was an Amstrad PC1512.
Patience is all we need.
Wow, can I use the sound from this video as apart of a project I'm working on?
+Disthron Yes for sure you can use it! but please add my link in credits and I would like to see your project when finished :)
macolest ok, thanks.
Do you have PVGA driver for Win3.0?
buen video! :D
Still a very capable machine. (In my books, if it does shit, it's capable.)
surprised that VGA card & HDD are installed in XT computer. Because in 198x such options are very luxury and expensive. And it 's very rare that Windows 3.0 could run in XT pc. Good scene. thanks.
Thank you

Think an 8088 with 640k of ram could run windows 95?
