I LOVE being able to see the trajectory at range of all the old rifles you shoot. You have been creating some really fun content lately. When you switched from the Krag to the Mauser at 300m you can really see the difference in speed and trajectory. that 7x57 is a laser compared to the slow, bowling ball arc of the .30-40! just imagine, though..some US troops were still armed with trapdoor 45-70 Springfields during this conflict!
There's some nifty vids of Norwegian shooting matches [with gratifying & admirable audience #s! Like turning the clock back a century here in the U.S!] demonstrating how with just a little bit of sheet metal work, the Krag has *far* faster speedloading than the pitiful Mauser stripper clips can achieve... 😉
Unless you get the rim's in out of order, then it really sucks to get the cartridges un jammed. The Norwegian krag in the matches talked about are using a rimless cartridge. The dump box reloads shown in the films are extremely fast.

The Krag load (.30-40 Krag) originally called for black powder. They changed to a smokeless load (.30 Army) that pushed a 200gr round nose bullet to 2000 fps. Much slower than the 7mm Mauser.
Ironically, for a few years after the Sp-Am War (not to be confused with our constant on-going war on spam a century later with the rise of the internet) the U.S. kept trying to hot-rod the 30-40 US cartridge to get better performance out of the Krag, but all these attempts met with failure largely because the US Army refused to bow to physics and allow Army Ordnance to decrease bullet mass to the point where they could get the desired velocity [we're talking about dropping the 220gr bullet down to the "ridiculously light" range of ~ 175gr so they could bump the ~2000fps mV up to 2200fps or so.] Because, you know, "light bullets won't stop a cavalry charge" & similar nonsense. It all worked out for the best tho', as it led to the 1903 Springfield rifle & .30-'06 cartridge (still massively overpowered for actual necessity) all in due course... 😁

Wow Rob! I have a Spanish M93 in .308 with a bent bolt, I can shoot almost as good as you on metal at 2-300 yards with open sites! It is a special thing. Great video once again, cheers from Aussie

Another fun video! Love those early smokeless powder rifles. I think in modern culture, the Krag gets a lot of undeserved flack. It was a fantastic transitional weapon for the U.S Military from the trapdoor black powder Springfield to the 03-A1.
Ahhh two rifles that have eluded me in my collection. The only Krag I have gotten my hands on is my brother's sporterized 1898. All the Spanish Mausers I find are in sad, sad shape. The lack of Krag ammo is what got me into handloading. Remington used to make a 150gr load that was pretty hot for the Krag. I want to replicate the old .30 Army load of 220gr. bullet at 2000fps.

The Spanish-American War fascinates me, not just the Rough Riders and TR’s legend. It’s the fact it was America’s most….how to put it…half-ass war in how poorly planned, organized, led it was with an Army composed of poorly trained but energetic volunteers, General officers who hadn’t fought a battle since either an Indian war or more often the Civil War, and the weapons were the most haphazard mismatch of old and new that many regiments had to take whatever they could find, steal, or get donated because the federal armories were empty. And yet despite all of that, the Spanish were even worse off despite having the better rifle and more combat experience in Cuba and the Americans won And this doesn’t even get to the Philippine-America insurrection that comes immediately after and that nightmare for the soldiers
Yes, how we managed to pull this off is a mystery. Also, this war absolutely exposed Spain and kind of pushed it to the “second grade empire” category…
Rob seemed happy in the beginning, then he pulled the trigger on the Krag and his happy demeanor went through the roof. I've got very little interest in vintage rifles (I like them but not practical for my life) I love hearing him get excited though. Keeps pulling me back in.
In October 1899, after reviewing the experiences of the Spanish-American War, U.S. Army ordnance authorities developed a new loading for the .30 Army used in the Krag rifle, in an "attempt" to match the ballistics of the 7×57mm Mauser cartridge employed by Spanish forces in that conflict. The new loading increased the muzzle velocity in the rifle version of the Krag to 2,200 ft/s (670 m/s) at 45,000 psi. However, once the new loading was issued, reports of cracked locking lugs on service Krags began to surface. In March 1900 the remaining stocks of this ammunition (some 3.5 million rounds) were returned to the arsenals, broken down, and reloaded back to the original 2,000 ft/s (610 m/s) specification. In 1903, after recommendations from the infantry Small Arms Board, the U.S. Army formally adopted a higher-velocity .30-caliber replacement for the .30-40 or .30 Army cartridge. The new cartridge was designated by its year of adoption, the .30-03. The 1893 Mauser gained a deadly reputation particularly from the Battle of San Juan Hill, where only 750 Spanish regulars "significantly" delayed the advance of 8,500 US troops armed with a mix of outclassed .30-40 Krag-Jørgensen bolt-action rifles and older single-shot, breech-loading Trapdoor Springfield rifles, inflicting 1,400 American casualties double the casualties as the Spanish and the Americans had to use 10X more troops to pull off a win. It was at that moment the Americans knew they F-cked up by buying the Krags and using black powder Springfields because the Spanish could see the smoke every time they fired one and were able to pinpoint their position and rain 7x57 down on them. The use of smokeless powder gave the Spanish a HUGE advantage over the single-shot, black powder 45/70 Springfield that was issued to many United States troops with the ballistics of a Volkswagon Average FPS: 1680. The Mauser's 7mm cartridge gave some 300 ft/s (91 m/s) higher velocity and a resultant flatter trajectory over the .30 Army cartridge used in the Krag-Jørgensen rifle. This extended the effective range of Spanish defensive fire. In addition, the higher velocity gave the 7 mm Mauser significantly greater penetrating capability than the .30-40. The M93's stripper clip system allowed the Spaniards to reload far more quickly than could be done with the Krag, whose magazine had to be loaded one round at a time. A United States Army board of investigation was commissioned as a direct result of this battle. They recommended replacement of the Krag. By 1903, American authorities had adopted the M1903 Springfield, which "copied" the 1898 Mauser's bolt and magazine systems "which got them sued" and they lost and had to pay some royalties, along with a higher-velocity .30 caliber cartridge, the .30-03 (which was later replaced by the more potent .30-06 Springfield). Due to the Historical Significance of the M1893 Mauser you should have shot it instead of the Krag because had it not been for the M1893 the Army would have probably used the inferior Krag for many many more years and cost countless more American lives. Because you know damn well the Govt. didn't want to spend the $$$$$ to adopt the new rifle because they had $800 hammers and toilet seats to waste that money on instead. Just my 2 cents.
hi Rob, i love the 30/40 krag i have the 1898 with the 1901 Buffington rear site, it is a tack driver, the 1901 buffington is a vernier peep site, it is a lot like the 1903 springfield sites what a great shooter, but ammo is very hard to find, it is said to be a dead cartridge, thank you for another great video.
Spain/Cuba also used crestless argintine 1891's in 7.65. Bannerman got them along with the early fn and loewe 93's. All round nose ammo also. Rear sight setting discrepancys are due to maybe not period correct spec ammo.

And i have an australian arms b 10 in .308 wich you cant find a picture on it on the internet i am sure i am the only one in Holland wich has a version like this one i know they are made in 1998 a short time. Absolutely love the new channel and new content. Will you do a modern rifle vs vintage rifle shoot? My mosin PE now has a 2nd scope ring set so I can mount modern optics. It shoots just as good... as far as hits on target... as my Bergara B14 HMR 308. The HMR groups tighter. "World at war - time traveling Soviets vs modern day hunters"
Yes it was. But you have to admit that Krag rifle mag wins for being the coolest on the block! I mean, I can watch those rounds going underneath and popping up on the left side of the bolt all day long! 😆
To be fair, the Rough Riders had the 1896 Krag-Jorgensen Carbine with the shorter barrel. Long range accuracy might not compare to the full length Model 1893 Spanish Mauser….just sayin’
Difference in muzzle velocity between the krag rifle and the krag carbine is less than 100fps. .30-40 krag achieves almost complete powder burn even in a 22" barrel.
I honestly think the reason the Spanish did so well in the Spanish American war (in terms of infantry vs infantry) wasn’t just down to any minor superiority in regards to the American Krag, but mainly due to the experience the Spanish army had by 1898 in combat with the 1893 mauser. They had already fought two bitter conflicts in North Africa against tribesman and had already worked out 90% of the bugs they had had with the Mauser. The American army in constrast had no combat experience with the Krag at that point as by the time the Krag had entered service most of the Indian wars on the west frontier had come to a close. Couple that with the fact the US army ordnance spent most of the 1890s fixing small bugs and making minor improvements to the Krag, the army as a whole didn’t have much experience in live fire practice with their rifles. It’s also interesting to note that most of the severe engagements where American troops were severely outgunned by the Spanish, the American units in question were still armed with single shot trapdoor Springfield which were woefully inadequate in comparison to clip loading mausers. Engagements by troops armed with sole krags weren’t as lopsided as the popular conception of the war tends to lean. And marines armed with Lee Navy straight pulls in 236 tended to perform slightly better than their Spanish counterparts as during the battle for Guantanamo Bay, marines were able to outlast the Spanish defenders as the standard marine loadout for 236 was almost 180 rounds in comparison to the 100 that the Spanish soldier was typically issued. That and there were several instances during that fight were Lee navy fire alone kept the Spaniards suppressed allowing for advancement of marines to take key positions. I can’t help but feel the switch to the 1903 Springfield was a mixture of over publication of “mauser superiority” stories and Army Ordnance just done with constantly having to work on “fixing” the Krag. Ovwerall I think the Krag is an excellent rifle that could’ve benefited a lot from a similar development path as the British took with the Lee Enfield series. Especially considering the use of a lighter spitzer cartridge could’ve given army ordnance exactly what they were wanting the Krag to do in comparison to the Mauser and adding a clip loading method to increase rate of fire (which they did experiment with but by that time the 1903 was already in the trials stage). It’s just sad the only time the Krag system was used on the winning side in a conflict was the Spanish American war, as both Norway and Denmark (the last and first countries to adopt the Krag rifle) lost horribly to Germany in 1940 which again wasn’t due to any flaw with the Krag but other factors around it.

The Krag rifles are excellent for hunting, you see them all the time sporterized and they make great deer rifles. I owned a 93 Spanish Mauser once, wish I still had it. Have yet to own a Krag.
Love your videos..and the camera work involved. Interesting with the 7x57, per your notes, the sight setting remained the same from 255 yrds out to 400,of course POA changed. Do you remember what load you were shooting in the 7x57? BTB, that cartridge was Paul Mausers favorite. Mine too.

I kick myself in the ass everytime I think of the Krag. I cant tell you how many times ive passed on SUPER nice Krags cus I cant justify having yet ANOTHER cartridge to have. Krags are amazing rifles.
Man, please listen to me, next time you will see nice Krag, buy it! You won't regret it. This rifle is pure riot to shoot! Yes, 30-40 is non existent in stores but you can still get it online. Shooting this rifle is so much fun, that it is hard to describe. I can just keep cycling those rounds from the magazine and keep watching them popping out on the left side forever! lol
I have a 1898 US Springfield 30-40 Krag. With 180 gr Hornady bullets it will print 1.5 inch 3 shot groups at 100 yards, yes I hunt with it and killed deer with it. It has the smoothest bolt of any rifle I've ever fired.
Hell yeah civilize them with a krag! I miss my Krag so much. I'm curious how the krag carbine would have performed because the Rough Riders carried carbines instead of the long rifles. Of course the entire American expeditionary Force to Cuba were armed with many different weapons. The rough riders krag carbines and some members had privately purchased 1895 Winchester carbines, regular enlisted men krag long rifles, U.S marines lee navy's, National Guard or Reserve troops trapdoors and rolling blocks.
@@VintageRiflesShootersClub Indeed it's even more interesting of the accurate fire United States Marines were able to do with the Lee Navy rifles in 6 mm during the Boxer Rebellion. At the time it was the smallest caliber rifle we had in our inventory. Until the United States Marine Corps adopted the krag rifle but they preferred the krag rifles with the later 1901 model site. All interesting and it makes me want my 30 government krag rifle back!
Use the 215-220 grain bullet weight range or run like 150's range of bullet weights? Another youtuber who reloads said he got good results with 150 grain FMJBT's from hornady.

Just remember that during the war boor war and Spanish American war that both rifles Mauser, and Enfield and Krag used round nose projectile s muzzle velocity in the 23 to 24 hundred range, the edge in ballistics goes to the 7fifty Seven , san wan Hull was a slaughter for the Americans and any Britain colonial troops were walking dead at 500 yards bye the boors at the moddor river in Transvaal, comparing Spanish marksmanship against Americans I would say that the Americans had the edge because of better training, the same goes for the Boors in S,A as the colonial troops couldn’t hold a candle to the Boor marksman, if it hadn’t been for WW1 the British would have switched over to a 7mm and as a side note the M1 Garand was prototype s in the 276 Petterson with the 3006 the same day at trials ,
The action was limited by the cartridge it used. Since it only used one locked lug. You couldn't really used larger rounds. And 30-40 was a bit underpowered as well. Mauser Action is strong as hell and can take just about any cartridge size. Hell the German WW1 Anti Tank Gun was just a big Mauser Action.
Rob, lol, I just love those old rifles. Honestly, they are tons of fun to shoot and I have tremendous respect for designers and those who were serving with them.
Hey rob, I noticed your Krag is missing the handguard. I am putting one together, but you cannot find a replacement handguard. Does the rear band stay pretty tight, or did you have to alter it?
Ok,now you need a Norwegian Krag in 6,5 and DFS Stangskyting . .30-40 had 220 grain mil bullet. 7x57 had 173 or 162 mil loqd. Later Rigby made their own version 140 grain,but chqmber cut for that type,so a 7x57 is better as that use different col and all bullet weights you can feed it with.
The Krag has the smoothest action I have ever felt. Have not tried everything out there, but Mauser, Savage, Ruger, Tikka, Winchester, Remington, Husquarna, Mosin-Nagant, CZ, Sig Sauer-- Never came close.Maybe the Schultz & Larsen, but not quite. The dumpfeed on the Krag is pretty neato, I get why it's not really used anywhere else but it just is so unusual that it tickles my fancy.

@@richardfrost7575 I have never had any rim lock on my brother's 1898 US Krag. I've had it on Mosins and Enfields but never the Krag.
Maybe a match up with Garand vs Arisaka rifles in the future? 😉

@@Sman7290 handloading helps but the krag originally ran with 215-220 grain round nose bullets and those are certainly not cheap.

The original 7mm was different than the version we see today. Round nose 170 grain head.

In October 1899, after reviewing the experiences of the Spanish-American War, U.S. Army ordnance authorities developed a new loading for the .30 Army used in the Krag rifle, in an "attempt" to match the ballistics of the 7×57mm Mauser cartridge employed by Spanish forces in that conflict. The new loading increased the muzzle velocity in the rifle version of the Krag to 2,200 ft/s (670 m/s) at 45,000 psi. However, once the new loading was issued, reports of cracked locking lugs on service Krags began to surface. In March 1900 the remaining stocks of this ammunition (some 3.5 million rounds) were returned to the arsenals, broken down, and reloaded back to the original 2,000 ft/s (610 m/s) specification.
In 1903, after recommendations from the infantry Small Arms Board, the U.S. Army formally adopted a higher-velocity .30-caliber replacement for the .30-40 or .30 Army cartridge. The new cartridge was designated by its year of adoption, the .30-03. The 1893 Mauser gained a deadly reputation particularly from the Battle of San Juan Hill, where only 750 Spanish regulars "significantly" delayed the advance of 8,500 US troops armed with a mix of outclassed .30-40 Krag-Jørgensen bolt-action rifles and older single-shot, breech-loading Trapdoor Springfield rifles, inflicting 1,400 American casualties double the casualties as the Spanish and the Americans had to use 10X more troops to pull off a win. It was at that moment the Americans knew they F-cked up by buying the Krags and using black powder Springfields because the Spanish could see the smoke every time they fired one and were able to pinpoint their position and rain 7x57 down on them. The use of smokeless powder gave the Spanish a HUGE advantage over the single-shot, black powder 45/70 Springfield that was issued to many United States troops with the ballistics of a Volkswagon Average FPS: 1680. The Mauser's 7mm cartridge gave some 300 ft/s (91 m/s) higher velocity and a resultant flatter trajectory over the .30 Army cartridge used in the Krag-Jørgensen rifle. This extended the effective range of Spanish defensive fire. In addition, the higher velocity gave the 7 mm Mauser significantly greater penetrating capability than the .30-40. The M93's stripper clip system allowed the Spaniards to reload far more quickly than could be done with the Krag, whose magazine had to be loaded one round at a time. A United States Army board of investigation was commissioned as a direct result of this battle. They recommended replacement of the Krag. By 1903, American authorities had adopted the M1903 Springfield, which "copied" the 1898 Mauser's bolt and magazine systems "which got them sued" and they lost and had to pay some royalties, along with a higher-velocity .30 caliber cartridge, the .30-03 (which was later replaced by the more potent .30-06 Springfield). Due to the Historical Significance of the M1893 Mauser you should have shot it instead of the Krag because had it not been for the M1893 the Army would have probably used the inferior Krag for many many more years and cost countless more American lives. Because you know damn well the Govt. didn't want to spend the $$$$$ to adopt the new rifle because they had $800 hammers and toilet seats to waste that money on instead. Just my 2 cents.
hi Rob, i love the 30/40 krag i have the 1898 with the 1901 Buffington rear site, it is a tack driver, the 1901 buffington is a vernier peep site, it is a lot like the 1903 springfield sites what a great shooter, but ammo is very hard to find, it is said to be a dead cartridge, thank you for another great video.
Spain/Cuba also used crestless argintine 1891's in 7.65. Bannerman got them along with the early fn and loewe 93's. All round nose ammo also. Rear sight setting discrepancys are due to maybe not period correct spec ammo.

And i have an australian arms b 10 in .308 wich you cant find a picture on it on the internet i am sure i am the only one in Holland wich has a version like this one i know they are made in 1998 a short time. To be fair, the Rough Riders had the 1896 Krag-Jorgensen Carbine with the shorter barrel. Long range accuracy might not compare to the full length Model 1893 Spanish Mauser….just sayin’
Difference in muzzle velocity between the krag rifle and the krag carbine is less than 100fps. .30-40 krag achieves almost complete powder burn even in a 22" barrel.
I honestly think the reason the Spanish did so well in the Spanish American war (in terms of infantry vs infantry) wasn’t just down to any minor superiority in regards to the American Krag, but mainly due to the experience the Spanish army had by 1898 in combat with the 1893 mauser. They had already fought two bitter conflicts in North Africa against tribesman and had already worked out 90% of the bugs they had had with the Mauser. The American army in constrast had no combat experience with the Krag at that point as by the time the Krag had entered service most of the Indian wars on the west frontier had come to a close.
Couple that with the fact the US army ordnance spent most of the 1890s fixing small bugs and making minor improvements to the Krag, the army as a whole didn’t have much experience in live fire practice with their rifles. It’s also interesting to note that most of the severe engagements where American troops were severely outgunned by the Spanish, the American units in question were still armed with single shot trapdoor Springfield which were woefully inadequate in comparison to clip loading mausers. Engagements by troops armed with sole krags weren’t as lopsided as the popular conception of the war tends to lean. And marines armed with Lee Navy straight pulls in 236 tended to perform slightly better than their Spanish counterparts as during the battle for Guantanamo Bay, marines were able to outlast the Spanish defenders as the standard marine loadout for 236 was almost 180 rounds in comparison to the 100 that the Spanish soldier was typically issued. That and there were several instances during that fight were Lee navy fire alone kept the Spaniards suppressed allowing for advancement of marines to take key positions.
I can’t help but feel the switch to the 1903 Springfield was a mixture of over publication of “mauser superiority” stories and Army Ordnance just done with constantly having to work on “fixing” the Krag.
Ovwerall I think the Krag is an excellent rifle that could’ve benefited a lot from a similar development path as the British took with the Lee Enfield series. Especially considering the use of a lighter spitzer cartridge could’ve given army ordnance exactly what they were wanting the Krag to do in comparison to the Mauser and adding a clip loading method to increase rate of fire (which they did experiment with but by that time the 1903 was already in the trials stage). It’s just sad the only time the Krag system was used on the winning side in a conflict was the Spanish American war, as both Norway and Denmark (the last and first countries to adopt the Krag rifle) lost horribly to Germany in 1940 which again wasn’t due to any flaw with the Krag but other factors around it.

The Krag rifles are excellent for hunting, you see them all the time sporterized and they make great deer rifles. I owned a 93 Spanish Mauser once, wish I still had it. Have yet to own a Krag.
Love your videos..and the camera work involved. Interesting with the 7x57, per your notes, the sight setting remained the same from 255 yrds out to 400,of course POA changed. Do you remember what load you were shooting in the 7x57? BTB, that cartridge was Paul Mausers favorite. Mine too.

I kick myself in the ass everytime I think of the Krag. I cant tell you how many times ive passed on SUPER nice Krags cus I cant justify having yet ANOTHER cartridge to have. Krags are amazing rifles.
Man, please listen to me, next time you will see nice Krag, buy it! You won't regret it. This rifle is pure riot to shoot! Yes, 30-40 is non existent in stores but you can still get it online. Shooting this rifle is so much fun, that it is hard to describe. I can just keep cycling those rounds from the magazine and keep watching them popping out on the left side forever! lol

I have a 1898 US Springfield 30-40 Krag. With 180 gr Hornady bullets it will print 1.5 inch 3 shot groups at 100 yards, yes I hunt with it and killed deer with it. It has the smoothest bolt of any rifle I've ever fired.

Hell yeah civilize them with a krag! I miss my Krag so much. I'm curious how the krag carbine would have performed because the Rough Riders carried carbines instead of the long rifles. Of course the entire American expeditionary Force to Cuba were armed with many different weapons. The rough riders krag carbines and some members had privately purchased 1895 Winchester carbines, regular enlisted men krag long rifles, U.S marines lee navy's, National Guard or Reserve troops trapdoors and rolling blocks.

@@VintageRiflesShootersClub Indeed it's even more interesting of the accurate fire United States Marines were able to do with the Lee Navy rifles in 6 mm during the Boxer Rebellion. At the time it was the smallest caliber rifle we had in our inventory. Until the United States Marine Corps adopted the krag rifle but they preferred the krag rifles with the later 1901 model site. All interesting and it makes me want my 30 government krag rifle back!

Just remember that during the war boor war and Spanish American war that both rifles Mauser, and Enfield and Krag used round nose projectile s muzzle velocity in the 23 to 24 hundred range, the edge in ballistics goes to the 7fifty Seven , san wan Hull was a slaughter for the Americans and any Britain colonial troops were walking dead at 500 yards bye the boors at the moddor river in Transvaal, comparing Spanish marksmanship against Americans I would say that the Americans had the edge because of better training, the same goes for the Boors in S,A as the colonial troops couldn’t hold a candle to the Boor marksman, if it hadn’t been for WW1 the British would have switched over to a 7mm and as a side note the M1 Garand was prototype s in the 276 Petterson with the 3006 the same day at trials ,

well, the mauser action is one of the most copied actions in history and the krag certainly wasn't. usually innovative, excellent designs are copied.
The action was limited by the cartridge it used. Since it only used one locked lug. You couldn't really used larger rounds.
And 30-40 was a bit underpowered as well.
Mauser Action is strong as hell and can take just about any cartridge size. Hell the German WW1 Anti Tank Gun was just a big Mauser Action.

Ok,now you need a Norwegian Krag in 6,5 and DFS Stangskyting .
.30-40 had 220 grain mil bullet.
7x57 had 173 or 162 mil loqd.
Later Rigby made their own version 140 grain,but chqmber cut for that type,so a 7x57 is better as that use different col and all bullet weights you can feed it with.

The Krag has the smoothest action I have ever felt. Have not tried everything out there, but Mauser, Savage, Ruger, Tikka, Winchester, Remington, Husquarna, Mosin-Nagant, CZ, Sig Sauer-- Never came close.Maybe the Schultz & Larsen, but not quite.
