A personal favourite of mine. Simple right hand patterns, fascinating (and evocative) left hand chord choices. Some digression into music theory, which may be of interest if you're a songwriter after similar effects, but you can skip it if you wish.
The definitive version is on Birthday Blues (1969), but an earlier prototype (probably 1965) can be heard on Young Man Blues.

Well explained. Thanks. Bert always seemed to do things for a reason. Certainly wasn’t to help beginners trying to copy him 😂

Loved this since Doug Kennedy’s transcription first appeared in The Songs and Guitar Solos of Bert Jansch ( The Yellow Book). Nice performance and explanation.

Thanks. I did use that book for reference when making my own transcription for the forthcoming Bert Transcribed Vol.2 (and Doug is credited there for his help, as well as in Vol.1). As I guess you know, the value of Doug's book is that he consulted with Bert when preparing it, so the fingerings and positions etc are all (one presumes!)100% reliable.

Jon, Thank you. This will help immensely. It looks as though it follows the Jamie Phillips tab. One of the many favorite Bert Jansch songs!

Well, this was my transcription, but it does match Jamie's. What Jamie's lacks (which is not a criticism!) is the fingering choice which enables the smooth transition between the Csus2 and the Gm, and the G7sus and the C; a bit of a stretch (counter-intuitive), but beautifully neat.

Great job! When I play this I don't use the open A-string but rather fret that bass note on the E-string. I don't hear the extended sustain of the open string on Bert's versions and I also feel the fingering pattern stays more logical that way throughout the progression. Thought it would be worth mentioning that possibility whether wrong or right.

Good point. It makes a nice movement down the fretboard from the previous chord - very Bert! At one point in the McCabe's version, though, it very much sounds like the open string in the 3rd verse. He rarely changed his fingering patterns, but maybe he did there? This tune will be appearing in book 2 (whenever that happens!), so I'll definitely bear your suggestion in mind. I'll also edit this video when I get the chance, to mention this alternative.

@@Jonpriley Cool! McCabe version is without capo so to play it with fretted E-string becomes more challenging. Can't wait for book 2 (own the first one of course) and I'd be more than happy to help with anything for free if I can, at least just to review things. I play Bert's music pretty much every day and like you I try to pay attention to every little detail. I really appreciate the work you put into your transcriptions.

@@RR0849 You're right the stretch makes it more challenging (and might explain why he sometimes fluffed the bass notes on that version), but it's still playable as 5-x-3-5-6-x, it fits very well between the shapes either side - and I don't know why I didn't see that option before! As I said, it's very Bert - it's definitely going in a revised version, although I will keep the open A as an alternative suggestion. There is just one issue in the bridge, where this chord goes to an Am - and if the bass stays on 6th string it makes for a very awkward 5-x-2-5-5 shape. It means the previous 5-x-3-5-6-x shape loses its advantages. Maybe he did choose open A for both those?

When I replied to you before, I forgot that I'd originally checked my transcription with the version published in Doug Kennedy's 1983 book of transcriptions (notation and tab) - which was produced in collaboration with Bert! That strongly implies that Bert would have played the tunes to Doug to demonstrate the fingering, or (at the very least) checked out and approved what Doug wrote. In that version, the A is the open 5th string! That doesn't change the fact that your choice is very "Bert", even if Bert didn't use it himself! So I will still mention it in the forthcoming book, although it will now be an optional alternative; I'll be restoring the open A to the "official" version.
