Picnic was the episode where I really became curious about the lore of salad fingers. It’s still so cool that the ONLY thing Fingers has been terrified by are the words of a little girl. Must have been ages since he’s met someone who speaks English.
I remember seeing somewhere that one theory as to why he reacted like that was because she seems to have been the only person who spoke to him. Salad fingers is clearly a bit mentally disturbed, as he constantly hops back and forth between various personalities, and he has a habit of speaking for inanimate objects and other people, putting words in their mouths. And since all the other actual people he meets never speak, at least not with words, he’s free to fill in the blanks with his imagination. Except for that little girl. She actually spoke, introducing something unknown and outside of his control, and that’s why she terrified him. Or at least that’s one theory.
Must be terrifying when your imaginary friend who you know it's imaginary and speak and answer for him decides to talk to you without your will. He is so terrified because she was not supposed to talk to him or at some point he couldn't difference what was in his mind (the puppet friends for example) and the reality (the girl who joined him). The fact that a little girl joined him for picnic regardless if real or not makes me think that salad fingers must be a kid with a some horrible mental problems lost in this little word he created. Then again it may mean nothing.
I feel like the voice-acting in this series is terribly overlooked (probably because the visuals are so striking). I really love how you voiced Salad Fingers. At first his voice just seems a little odd and creepy, but then as one listens to it he becomes such a fragile, sensitive, HUMAN character. Within his own world, he is a very normal person, one who has said and done some very questionable things (like in the Postman episode) but who has a moral compass and wants to do good just like all of us.
@@0_dearghealach_083 I remember reading it at some point, it was something like David Firth was a guitarist in a band (which ofc involves using fingers) and someone said to him that he had 'salad fingers' (not really sure what that means though, maybe long fingers or something).

Everything, I mean EVERYTHING in Salad Fingers is deeply disturbing. I'm left with the urge to silently weep, hidden under my bed. It is way more horrifying than most horror movies. Well done.
Every since i first saw this, even up till now i though it was funny. Its literally non sensical from the beginning. He has salad fingers and hes a dumb schizophrenic masochist. Im 100x more afraid of horror movies than this stuff. It is interesting to see the perspective tho.
@@sonniesiekbert5694 I'd like a whole cover of him singing somewhere over the rainbow in that weird place full of animal carcasses he entered after passing out with Hubert cumberdale
To me, the best thing about Salad Fingers as a character is how there's something lurking just beyond the viewer's understanding, that adds such a special characteristic of unease to our time with Mr. Fingers. And it's almost never clear whether he's narrowly avoiding some colony of traumatic memories, or perhaps the crushing guilt of something. And since Mr. Firth intends no 'Objective, correct' view to the series, there's such an overarching horror to the unknown of Salad Fingers - though he is a human creation, there is such a mystery to his existence, and one which we will likely never see. There's something so special about that.
Wow! This is every bit as fucking horrifying as i remember watching it when I was 12 years old. Truly impressive that you can make something that can scar a child and then completely tear that wound back open 10 years later
This kept making me switch between wanting to jump off a roof, wanting to hug salad fingers, wanting to throw my phone, wanting to cry, and repeating that process 😭
@@virtuosic4883 wth are you on about lmao the fucking irony curb your desire to sound more intelligent than you actually are, both of your comments are so fuckin funny to read though, like the absolute commitment to wanting to be smœrt via sounding as narcissistic as possible is just... magnificent. if it's shitposting then it's world-class, not everyone can pull off being a vapid egotist so well, if it's not, then go to therapy before everyone around you grows tired of your antics and you end up alone.
@@virtuosic4883 Wow, being invested in fiction is cringe now. Can we finally get over this cringe stuff, you don't have to feel embarrassed when other people express their feelings
@@Maurrokh Emotional expression and emotional disregulation are two entirely different things. Normalise the first, by all means, but you do realise that normalising the second is literally normalising personality disorders, right?
I thought I recalled someone else saying it years ago, but my own theory is that Salad Fingers represents/is supposed to be a soldier killed in WWI and stuck in purgatory/hell or perhaps still alive but dealing with serious psychosis and PTSD as a result of the horrors of the the war. Because he has the mannerisms and vernacular of that time and mentions on multiple occasions "the great war" the whole series becomes less disturbing and more so incredibly depressing if you look at it from this context
I think it's crazy the theories people come up with are all so intricate when in all reality I don't think it's meaning is that deep. I think it's just meant to be weird and creepy lol. But that's the great part about art. You can tack whatever theory you want onto it as you please and everyone experiences it differently. I don't think there is one right answer. And no wrong answers
@@ImSarahTarot unfortunately he probably won't, since he said he went too far with episode -2 and also I mean he's dead, it's difficult to make prequels over prequels on a story that already has an end

This series has been with me growing up and I always watch it when I'm sad, it been like a comfort series for me. thank you so much David firth for creating this amazing series! you can see the improvement in animation throughout the series and I love the artstyle!
*Dude I was 2 years old when the 2008 episode "Spoon" was released. Now, I'm 17 yet you still make these! I love the simplicity of artwork, the narration of Salad and the cryptic story with some gory imagery. It combines to the mystery and creepiness of the story. This is indeed a Masterpiece! We need a brand new generation of Salad Finger!*
At first I was only creeped out by this, but in time while watching these episodes I developed some kind of sympathy for him, like you could while working in a psychiatric institution for a very strange patient you see every day.
Thank you for this gift to the world! 💚 From my childhood to this day Salad Finger is the one first series which have been huge part of my life. This kind of art and animations. Just perfect! Love it! ❤️
Even without watching other videos about salad fingers I feel that he almost definitely a masochist I can’t truly explain why he seems to talk in a formal English though
I belive the creator is British and the Great War was ww1 and salad fingers talks about it a few times So we can assume they were alive around ww1 and British so the language makes sense
its crazy cool to see how much your art has developed and I am just realising how much this means to me as well, I was a child when I first saw salad fingers but now as an adult I feel I understand him too. Thank you David Firth
I’ll always come back to salad fingers. Makes me nostalgic and honestly it’s beautifully sad. To watch his mental deteriorate. But honestly it shows us how as time moves on we ourselves will become more sad and fearful.
Hoping Saladfingers gets a direct reference in the next season of Smiling Friends. David Firth already voiced a role, so taking that extra step would be great.
I'm so excited to watch this tomorrow!! I'm getting everyone I know together, that hasn't seen or heard of Salad Fingers and we're watching this in a Discord call. Everyone is about to be educated!! :D Thank you for everything you've ever created, David.
When my mom first showed me this, I thought it was weird and creepy and I didn’t really like it that much. But recently, I’ve been watching this nonstop and I’ve become really hyper-fixated on it. And another thing, I find this oddly comforting and idk why. It just gives off these vibes that make me feel comfortable.
So my girlfriend never heard of Salad Fingers until i brought it up recently. She could tell I loved this so I recommended it to her and she's currently watching right now
I had missed the Glass Brother episode along the way, so I appreciate the brand new video of everything. That episode is really something of a masterpiece.
Today, some fifteen years after discovering this on Newgrounds, I came to realise that one, amongst many, of the creepy aspects about SF, is the fact that he is always so proper.
I honestly think that Mr. salad Fingers singing is very beautiful and delightful.Mr.Salad Fingers also has a talent for playing the flue and im here for it. Also, Mr. Salad Fingers desire to travel to France is amazing.
Salad fingers came out before I was born around the time my older sister was born, and I really love it and it’s symbolism/fandom it’s cool how it still reaches people despite its posting of 15 years ago :)
A few a Christmases ago, I went to stay will my parents for a few days over the holidays; I was watching Salad Fingers on my laptop and I must have dozed off for a bit, and when I came to, my mom was sitting beside me and said to me, “I was curious what you were watching, so I watched a little bit of this, well, show, and I just want to make sure everything has been alright for you lately and if you want to talk about ANYTHING, I am here for you.” No joke, that is exactly what she said to me; I really didn’t know what to say.
This channel broke my humor as a kid, idk maybe truama response, but your stuff has always been so weird and chaotic that Ive just found it to be the funniest thing. Its addicting honestly and always find myself coming back down memory lane to rewatch the channel.
I think episode 6 19:07 - 23:24 (Present) is the weirdest. It has a certain unpredictability or randomness that is stronger than other episodes. Of course other episodes have a weird concept or strong and confusing visuals but Present takes a deep dive in some of Mr Fingers supposed mental disorders such as DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder)
So bizzare how comforting this became for me. Been since the release of Birthday since I watched, and instead of being creeped out, It felt good. Rewatched this comp every day for the past week

It is way more horrifying than most horror movies.
Well done.
It definitely has a schizoid aesthetic to it.
True... Its calm and eerie at the same time
Every since i first saw this, even up till now i though it was funny. Its literally non sensical from the beginning. He has salad fingers and hes a dumb schizophrenic masochist. Im 100x more afraid of horror movies than this stuff. It is interesting to see the perspective tho.
Deadass, perfectly described me watching this series. It is utter horror

Sir, what channel have you been watching this be broadcast on??
Honestly

We’re all freaks 😂
To me, the best thing about Salad Fingers as a character is how there's something lurking just beyond the viewer's understanding, that adds such a special characteristic of unease to our time with Mr. Fingers. And it's almost never clear whether he's narrowly avoiding some colony of traumatic memories, or perhaps the crushing guilt of something. And since Mr. Firth intends no 'Objective, correct' view to the series, there's such an overarching horror to the unknown of Salad Fingers - though he is a human creation, there is such a mystery to his existence, and one which we will likely never see. There's something so special about that.
So true
I like how it's disturbing then you just see him flying through flutes or playing an instrument those made me laugh a bit
Wow! This is every bit as fucking horrifying as i remember watching it when I was 12 years old. Truly impressive that you can make something that can scar a child and then completely tear that wound back open 10 years later
I remember watching this when I was a kid, but I don't remember much of what happened to him tho
Idk how 6 year old me was just fine but I’m 11 now and this is just weird
Idk how old I was back then but rn I'm 17 and I rewatched Salad fingers episodes, it was very weird seeing them two or three years later.
Same. I remember when I saw this and I only had one question.
What the actual hell am I watching?
I didn’t remember how dark salad fingers is and now I’m sitting with my sister watching it and she’s terrified
This kept making me switch between wanting to jump off a roof, wanting to hug salad fingers, wanting to throw my phone, wanting to cry, and repeating that process 😭
I hope you're self aware enough to know that's an overreaction and you sound cringe af for saying it.
@@virtuosic4883 wth are you on about lmao

@@Maurrokh Emotional expression and emotional disregulation are two entirely different things. Normalise the first, by all means, but you do realise that normalising the second is literally normalising personality disorders, right?
Salad Fingers was my gateway into creepy animation and he's still one of my favorite characters.
Honestly, I think its probably just an amalgamation of horrific imagery and disturbing concepts.
except he explicitly says it was terrible you all left for the great war without me?
I think it's crazy the theories people come up with are all so intricate when in all reality I don't think it's meaning is that deep. I think it's just meant to be weird and creepy lol.
But that's the great part about art. You can tack whatever theory you want onto it as you please and everyone experiences it differently.
I don't think there is one right answer. And no wrong answers
But acctally David got called salad fingers so he made this
I agree and he is probably schizophrenic since he has hallucinations and hears voices
I love how he innocently says "hello!"
I really hope he continues this series. I love it.
Me too 😊
I hope he brings back toast boy one day too
I hope flesh boy comes back
@@ImSarahTarot unfortunately he probably won't, since he said he went too far with episode -2 and also I mean he's dead, it's difficult to make prequels over prequels on a story that already has an end
@@Dj_Frixz well he died in episode 1, episode -1 and -2 go backwards in time, so he could do more episodes. But sad to hear he feels he went too far ): imo he went too far a bit in sock 6, but I’m sure he will do more of those
It's nice to see Salad Fingers' mental health imporoving throughout the series.
Yeah... Improving....
I think you are watching it backwards
He fucking died ???
Is the improving in the room with us?
This series gives me such a weird uncanny asmr feeling. It's like Over The Garden Wall but more graphic. I'm disturbed but also about to fall asleep idk I love it

why is salad fingers so comforting and It is like ASMR (i love this show) :)
This is the finest example of surrealist media from the 21st century. I'd put it on par with things like eraserhead, meshes of the afternoon, and un chien andalou. The score, the story, the visuals, the fact that it's taken 15 years to unfold. I'm speechless every time I watch it
It went from a little cartoon to a FUCKING ROMANCE DRAMA
Actually... so many years have passed since i first watched salad fingers and i never told anyone... recently i showed my husband this and i was terrified that the "look of weirdness" will hit me... but he said "you know...this is quite good lets watch more of David" and ... this is the most incredible thing i never imagined :D. Haha i will never let go of a fellow weirdo!!

what a wonderfully weird and creepy little cartoon . i just found out bout this today brilliant
the vibes I get from salad fingers is a really special British child
I love how we get to watch David improve as an animator and artist. Seeing the slow but sure improvement over the episodes is awesome.
I sure miss the summer of 2004. Things were simpler back in the Salad Fingers 1 thru 4 days.
I bet Salad Fingers himself thinks so too.

I’ll always come back to salad fingers. Makes me nostalgic and honestly it’s beautifully sad. To watch his mental deteriorate. But honestly it shows us how as time moves on we ourselves will become more sad and fearful.
Yes
I like these animations mashups because it makes it easier for me to see how the animation has improved over time.
Hoping Saladfingers gets a direct reference in the next season of Smiling Friends. David Firth already voiced a role, so taking that extra step would be great.

A few a Christmases ago, I went to stay will my parents for a few days over the holidays; I was watching Salad Fingers on my laptop and I must have dozed off for a bit, and when I came to, my mom was sitting beside me and said to me, “I was curious what you were watching, so I watched a little bit of this, well, show, and I just want to make sure everything has been alright for you lately and if you want to talk about ANYTHING, I am here for you.” No joke, that is exactly what she said to me; I really didn’t know what to say.

this is the most disturbing yet comforting thing I think I’ve ever seen
I think episode 6 19:07 - 23:24 (Present) is the weirdest. It has a certain unpredictability or randomness that is stronger than other episodes. Of course other episodes have a weird concept or strong and confusing visuals but Present takes a deep dive in some of Mr Fingers supposed mental disorders such as DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder)
