I had said Riccirelli was my favourite in this aria but I guess after hearing Scotto's interpretation I changed my mind!She really kills it, what a beutiful technique and musicality and passion this lady had!
What would you say about Dimitrova's performance? She really nailed it!
This must be rather late in her career. The top got to be pretty strident, and there is a wobble at times, but I don’t see how anyone could deny that she makes strong musical choices and adapts well to the limitations of an aging instrument. I heard her live during the eighties, and in a big house she was really impressive even at the end. The voice carried amazingly even when singing softly, and the wide vibrato on the high notes was not nearly as noticeable at is was in recordings made at the time. And she as always deeply expressive.

I like Renata Scotto but sometimes I find she tries to hard, she so wants to be expressive and dramatic that it sounds a little studied and lacking in spontaneity.

Andiamo ha capito bene per essere un soprano compiuto non basta averne il timbro tonale... e non confondiamo le espressioni o le pause con gli ammiccamenti; cmq i gusti non si discutono, ed ho il massimo rispetto per le preferenze individuali. l'importante é che conta é che ognuno si faccia bastare quel che gli basta.

Grande maestria e tecnica ferratissima, peccato non l'abbia passata alla sua allieva Netbreko, bella, specie se truccata ed abbigliata, ma definirla soprano é un azzardo.

I think she reached her Zenith with Madama Butterfly and Suor Angelica. At the end she was a vocalist, not a musician.
