    You covered most of the examples that popped into my head. I'd add that emotions tend to be tied directly into rationalizations. Fear is probably the biggest source of rationalizations, with some of its success being rooted in legitimate reasons to be afraid, i.e. it's a bad idea to step in front of a moving car, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't walk in parking lots because a car might back out.
    The "if I finish these cookies now, I won't be tempted to eat them later" rationalization (I'm definitely familiar with that one) can be rooted in the fear of dealing with the stress of resisting eating those cookies. Or the fear that by having them now and later, you'll solidify an addiction to eating them. In both cases, the reasons are sort of legitimate, but the problem is with assuming that your only option is to eat all the cookies now or eat them later. There is also the third option: Throw them out. Or even a fourth and fifth (hide them or give them to someone else).
    Politics love to play on that kind of thinking with the dichotomous issues they present. Pro life / pro choice, etc., with no third option or beyond. So I'd suggest an additional technique: If you're rationalizing between option A and option B, look for a C, D, or E because you probably have more choices than you think.

    I've just enjoyed a number of your videos. Thank you! I have a small quibble with this one- I think you can also rationalize to support things that are true or good. It is a specious, flawed, or motivated form of reasoning (or the illusion of reasoning), but its use is not limited to supporting irrational beliefs or justifying self indulgence. Fallacious reasoning implies (but does not require) a false conclusion. Noble cause corruption would probably make extensive use of rationalizations. Thanks for the videos! Love the one on Bayesian logic.

    Well I don't think the example given about not respecting a girl for going home with a guy on the first night isn't so irrational. I don't respect anyone I don't know, too often respect is conflated with common courtesy and people seem to think they are owed respect for merely introducing themselves. Common courtesy is the fake smile and meek apology I give when i pass someone in the frozen foods section of Tesco, respect is mutual understanding and trust derived from the personal experience of both parties.
    A first date isn't going to make me trust you and it sure as shit doesn't make me respect you. A friend I have chosen to spend years getting to know and trusting because we share mutual experience that lets both of us know the principles and flaws of each over is not something you're going to even graze by smiling at me. I can chat absolute shit at someone I respect, insult their mother, insist that I fucked their sister and whatever, because when the chips are down both of us know that we have each other's backs. Some random girl I met on tinder? Fuck no.
    Their coming home with me on the first night shows that they're loose and in this only for sexual gratification, which is fine if they're just looking for that, but don't expect me to salute them for their bravery. They're not my friend and they mean nothing to me beyond tonight's lay, this has nothing to do with respect. If my friend did something that made me lose trust him, it would hurt and I would have to think long and hard about what I must do in response, this will make me lose some respect for him but I would rather seek to rekindle it. If a girl I met on tinder a month ago walks out on me, I won't make lose a second of sleep over it.
    I am prepared to defend that this isn't rationalization, its commitment to my own principles. People I don't know are not worthy of my respect, that is something that we both earn.

      @Noah Copeland I don't think it's about respect, it's more about fear.

    • @zodlord5669
      @zodlord5669 3 роки тому

      @Noah Copeland Ok I understand but context and social expectations could really blur that line. I'm sure if you had a friend who is a big man go home with a unknown woman you wouldn't have a second thought about it but if you're small girlfriend went home with the big man she just met one the first date you might think twice.
      That said I'm sure there are women who lose respect for men if they saw that he went home with a stranger. Perspective is important.

    • @nostalgicbliss5547
      @nostalgicbliss5547 3 роки тому

      @Noah Copeland Why would he care if his male friend went home with a stranger? I think the whole point is the guy is saying he would not take a woman seriously who goes home with a strange man after one interaction. I am assuming the friend is heterosexual, so it means he would not respect her as a mate. Most heterosexual dudes won't care what other men are doing with their sexual lives cause they are not trying to date or procreate with those men, very different mentality.

    • @bee-ep9qz
      @bee-ep9qz 3 роки тому

      @@nostalgicbliss5547 The point was that it was a rationalisation, not the real reason he disrespected those women. He didn't lose respect for the woman based on the *_riskiness_* of her decision, since he didn't lose respect for other people like his male friends based on whether they took similarly risky decisions (if he had answered that yes, he does lose respect for his male friends in this case, then it would not be a rationalisation, just truth). He loses respect based on other factors, probably related to purity (or maybe not, I just said probably). Again, if he had said he loses respect for people in other situations who make similarly risky choices, it would not be a rationalisation.
      And to be even more precise, if he doesn't lose respect for his male friends when they make similarly risky sexual decisions, then it was just a rationalization that it was the *_riskiness_* of her decision that made him lose respect, and not something else. Whether he's justified in his judgment of those women is besides the point, it's just that the reason he gave for disrespecting them is not the real reason.
      Another way to poke a hole in that is just to ask, if she was a trained martial artist who went home with a guy on the first date, would he still lose respect for her? If he still thinks she shouldn't have said yes on the first date to going home, then it's something else that's making him judge her.
