The accelerator position sensor simply detects the accelerator position and sends that info to the vehicles computer, or ECM. Typically, the accelerator position sensor has two sensors which act as a potentiometer. The ECM judges the current opening angle of the accelerator pedal from these signals and controls the throttle control motor.
Common symptoms of a bad APP sensor include:
- lack of power
- engine stall
- erratic idle
Having a trouble code comes down to a bad sensor or a problem with the wiring:
P2122 - APP Sensor A or Sensor 1 low voltage
P2123 - APP Sensor A or Sensor 1 high voltage
P2127 - APP Sensor B or Sensor 2 low voltage
P2128 - APP Sensor B or Sensor 2 high voltage
P2138 - APP Sensor A/B or Sensor 1 & 2 Incorrect voltage

Testing this way works only if sensors are good. Most sensors will intermittently malfunction due to temp changes or solder cracks, giving wrong results. Easier to just change out the APP, save time. For those that don't understand kilo ohms, it means thousand.
Nice video to explain how it works.
Thanks for the insight… didn’t know that they can malfunction intermittently
@@Ceasar91706 All electronics can malfunction intermittently especially if they are soldered with lead free and used in an environment with a wide temperature gradient.
Ohm test are very unreliable period!
Very informative finally may get to the bottom of p2128 engine management code on a Citroen ds3 now I know what I’m looking for great work
Thanks for a very clear and concise explanation of testing. Most are just part swapping videos. As mentioned below, maybe put the car make in the title.
Thankyou sir just what I was looking for well done for explaining testing Thankyou. Peace
the info that I need. Lifesaver.
excellent presentation so very well explained, thank you
Nice video..very clear explanation on the concepts of testing APPS..thank u🇵🇭
Thank you ..really needed this
This is a very nice video
Great video, you explained it real well😊
Dear sir. Very very useful lessons
Thank you so much
Very clear & Precise! Great video, thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Thanks for sharing this video its helpful
Thank you, very clear
Glad it was helpful!
Great video, Thanks for the info.
I subscribed within first min..super profesdional explanations of how system works..not just heres this thing im gonna swap it and hope that makes light go out
Great info
I have been looking for decades, never found a butterfly in their. I have found a brass throttle valve inside carbs, TBI, SFI, MultiPort, drive-by-cable and drive-by-wire systems. I did find a June bug in the oil bath air cleaner of a 58 Ford truck once, but after all, it was used on the farm. Not even one moth, they are quick!

excellent video. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Drive by wire is so stupid. Nothing wrong with using a cable
Hi friend, pls can you explain for calibrate this sensor after mounting in the car using multimeter pls. How I put in the correct position. Thank you
What if changing the sensor doesn't fix the problem? Also, what if every time it goes wrong, it goes into limp mode and throws a vsa light plus check engine? What would be the next thing to check?
I'm having same issue right now.
If replacing the APPS doesn't fix the problem, then you would need to check other components in the electronic throttle control system, but the first thing to do (if you haven't done so already) would be to scan for trouble codes. The system really only consists of three main components (APPS, throttle body, and PCM), but there is quite a bit of wiring involved, and the trouble codes can give you a good idea of what to check next.
If you're unable to retrieve the codes, then I would suggest removing the throttle body and cleaning it out with either electronics cleaner spray or 99% isopropyl alcohol (red HEET gas line antifreeze can be used as a substitute).
weird that the throttle cable looks just like a brake cable on a bicycle! holy smokes
From 2007-2008 Acura TL Factory Service Manual: "Check the accelerator pedal position sensor in the A/T DATA LIST with the HDS/Scan tool. Do not press the accelerator. Is the accelerator pedal position sensor opening 11 % and above? YES -Go to the APP sensor signal inspection. NO -Substitute a known-good PCM (see SUBSTITUTING THE PCM ) and recheck."
- {Backprobe APP sensor wires with sensor plugged in} "[Wire color may vary] (LT BLU APS-A (ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION (APP) SENSOR A) Detects APP sensor A signal. With ignition switch ON (II) and accelerator pedal fully pressed: About 4.5 V. With ignition switch ON (II) and accelerator pedal released: About 1.0 V" "
BLK APS-B (ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION (APP) SENSOR B) Detects APP sensor B signal. With ignition switch ON (II) and accelerator pedal fully pressed: About 2.3 V. With ignition switch ON (II) and accelerator pedal released: About 0.5 V"
Stay gold.
Hey, I have a 2004 120i (e87) I have a sensor on the pedal I believe, does it have another one near the throttle body Or somewhere? Can't find much info about this. Thanks man, great video!
I want to know the same thing for my c250 Benz
For the app sensor what is a bad reading or bad reading number?
I've replaced this sensor with 4 different ones.. and I can drive the car for a little over 2 hours the tcs light comes on and the triangle.. and when I stop the car will stall out.. have you use my thinkdiag scanner to clear everything to get it back going.. why?? I've been fighting with this for months.. I've replaced all sensors with oem and found faulty wiring and repaired them.. so lost.. car is now unreliable.. smh

I have a p0222 check engine dtc in my nissan terra 2019 model 😢 what to do?
The holes are slotted and the sensor, if you have to replace it, how do you adjust it? I’ve searched all over the Internet and find no one addressing the slotted holes in the adjustment of this sensor.
How can I tap into accelerator sensor signal without changing the signal parameters. I mean I want to connect a motor to linearly control it with pedal. But if I connect the sensor output to a mosfet (to run a motor), it might alter the signal and mess up the engine, or not ?
I get a p2122 on an 05 Colorado is that the similar problem?
I've a Nissan Sentra 2006 and I thought this video was NOT of throttle position sensor but of accelerator position sensor two very different sensors . My accelerator pedal sensor is located under / attached to pedal itself ..
lucky for me i actually need the throttle position sensor
This IS the accelerator pedal position sensor. The throttle position sensor(TPS) is attached to the throttle body.
Is it wise to only change the pcb inside?
I changed mine today and I still have the same problem I’m very confused 🤔
Hello my dear professional colleague, could you give me the order of the connector pins, for example "pin 1 vcc, pin 2 signal, pin 3 gnd" I would be very grateful, I'm having problems with a Honda and because of that I'm going to try adapt this Acura TPS
What about acelerator position sensor Older i have mk4 Golf 1998 in computer it shows Implaussible signal acc pozition sensor ???
I'm assuming the sensor replacement is pretty self-explanatory?
crazy idea right here...maybe put the actual vehicle in the description or the title.
Hey do you any videos on transmission range switch 07-08 tl
Hi sir I'm from philippines...I'm asking you where is the location reverse light switch for maxima 98 model thank you...god bless
I would think it’s near the transmission or on it.
Am getting p1123 on my kzte turbo diesel with check engine light every time I drive some 15_20 kilometers....cn anyone do a video on this?
Would this trigger a check engine light if it's bad? I got a hesitation that comes on once in a while I'm not sure if it's this or a bad throttle body..
Did you fix your problem?
@@9hoshiz no cause the hesitation is once in a while it's not a everyday thing I'm going to try some seaform one day and see if that fixes the problem..my mind keep telling me it's the fuel pump cause my hesitation only happens on hot sunny days esp when it's humid..
mine happens here and there but it happens on sunny days and cold days as well.@@trini_boi2414
This has come on 3 times on my 2019 chevy Tahoe RST and $1000 each time it happens. When is a recall going to take place?
@CarsNToys, how are you doing sir ? I have a question what was really the issue that you were having with the pedal accelerator sensor? I ask you because Iam having a jerky transmission from first to second gear shift and I don’t have no check engine light one but I was reading a forum where some people say to have a same issue with they tranny and changing the pedal accelerator sensor fixed the issue.. that’s why I ask you what was the issue with it on your car ?
I’m having exact same problem with no codes. I took the plastic top off th
I took the plastic top off the sensor n there was about 1/4 slack in the cable. I loosened the nut on the right, then tightened the nut to the left, then tightened the right nut. It took a lot of play out of the gas pedal. Then I cleaned the mass sensor with mass sensor cleaner n removed the hose from throttle body n it was gummed up with carbon. I sprayed n cleaned it . I then put a bottle of cleaner in gas n after about 100 miles it’s s different car

How poetic it is a butterfly I always thought it was a plate.
isn't the title wrong? All I see is throttle position sensors. No accelerator pedals.
The pedal was removed for easier view.
