I can totally relate. I've struggled with my shopping addiction for a long time now. My lows are usually longer and after just a couple of no-buy days I'm tempted to go on a shopping spree anytime there's an opportunity (for example, something stressful or sad is going on and I have problems regulating my emotions) I go out or go online and buy, buy buy like there's no tomorrow. I browse clothes and beauty products online every day, a few hours a day. This is sad and terrific but it's the reality. I get so bored and restless when I cant browse clothes online I feel like I'm going crazy. This January I have a no spend January and I hope to finally succeed.
I have felt the same way for a long time. Browsing was part of my daily routine and how I quelled boredom. I had to shift my focus to something else (for me it was learning about debt, and then pursuing learning more about video and photography). Find something that interests you and pursue it! It becomes a new purpose and is so fulfilling that shopping never really can do for us ❤️
I was a big time browser and shopper. I moved in SF when I was 17 to go to school and I was in debt from the go with loans. So much shopping to do in Union square where I lived and worked! I didnt really have close friends for a while so I did what I was good at and went shopping almost daily. Now I have 2 young kids and I still browse online but I've been so good about not buying(mostly motivated by having a little family now). I've managed to pay off almost all of my debt by saving and it was the best decision. I'm glad that I had a big mental shift where I realized that what I was doing was excessive.
I do no buy days, broken out by hours, and if they string together they become weeks, then months. Deal with one moment, one impulse at a time and don't think about a whole year.
My husband is my best role model for low/no buy. He ONLY purchase item when some piece had worn out. All his clothes are hang up in our closet. Two pairs of shoes at all time. And he is doing it as a matter of fact, because he just could care less about shopping. I've learned so much from him.
You are super inspiring. I spend so much on littles useless things - not just clothes - and I'm in debt… so in 2020 I will fallow your lead and I'll change my mind!
I keep your words in mind when im mindlessly scrolling online and I unsub'd to several promo emails. I greatly appreciate your honesty and being brave admitting to being an emotional spender-I am too. Your words really resonate with me and enjoy your content! Thank you!
I m on a no buy since november 2019. I ve only bought a pair of knee high socks and a pair of thighs, a cheap journal to keep track of my progress and a sea slat spray for my lifeless, thin and oily hair. I m proud of myself, I feel stronger than ever. Dave Ramsey helped me achieve this.
Day 41 of my replacement only no buy. Going well. Saving so much money. Had to eliminate temptation emails, videos and quit looking for something to want. This month I had to replace my broken heating pad, a tank top that fit terribly (tiny living=tiny wardrobe) and normal grocery items. I also bought a Keurig refillable pod to save money on takeout coffee. My joy is seeing my savings accounts grow.
I literally look forward to these check ins! Thank you for doing them, it feels like a therapy check in session with a friend! Xo! (Haven’t watched this yet, but I def will after class!)
This is my 1st time for a capsule wardrobe as well and YES I agree with it being foreign, ugh...but I am sticking to it, dang it lol I like not seeing my off season clothes and even with storing those, I STILL have enough tops/shirts and sweaters to last me 4 weeks without wearing the same one and this is AFTER I decluttered a gazillion times. Good Lord! I have a problem 😂 2020 is definitely a NO buy. I have more than enough. No wonder I don’t ever have money to do anything 🙄🙄🙄 I have a fear of running out and buy backups so that’s another thing I need to work on. WE CAN DO THIS LADIES! ❤️
Your honesty and willingness to share your lows (vulnerability) are lovely and relatable. Be your best authentic YOU. Thank you for sharing your journey.
I decluttered my closet almost on a monthly basis last year, but after doing that encircled wardrobe workbook, I feel like I finally have the pieces I need for the year! Low buy year here I come!
The struggle in your voice is palpable. I recently decided to try and do a capsule wardrobe and am shocked, truly, at how engrained I am to shopping for reasons other than need. And I'm not even a big shopper! For now I'm trying, and being patient about undoing some of my habits. As for that forgotten onion, more fresh air ~ may all positive thoughts surround you. ♥️
The low buy concept intrigues me. My job is stressful and I find myself shopping as a way to destress...often spending money on things I absolutely do not need. My goal for 2020 is to low buy and only buy thrifted when I feel I need something in my wardrobe. Thank you for your insights and sharing your experiences. January is also my birthday month and I’d like to enjoy the month rather than rushing through it as in years past. 😊
I agree, I too did a low-buy last year and I had high expectations for myself that when I bought something I felt so shameful and low. Now this year I will take it month by month and see where it takes me.
Be gentle with yourself- this is hard. Love your style. Perhaps do a month of the capsule and see what if anything is lacking and sell the things that you don't want to help with the debt? Good luck with the low buy.
Thank you 🌹 dear Christina, for this great Vlog. I‘m a 51 year old lady from Germany and I love your videos soooo much. You are my lifestyle inspiration. January ist my birthday month , too. Many lovely greetings 😘 Christine, called Chrissy from Bavaria.
You are such an inspiration to me. Thanks for your honesty about your struggles and triumphs. It has helped push me into debt repayment and low buy and facing my reality about why i shop.
I am so delighted that I found your channel. Your inspiration to start a Low-Buy year came right on top of Signe from UseLess and her video on the same topic. Your honesty about the ups and downs.... your emotional connection to shopping... and all the ins and outs of changing your thinking about shopping is very refreshing. Cheers
Thank you so much for talking about this. I have been struggling with this for a few years and I thought it was so stupid and shameful. Having someone going through the same thing and watching you succeed is so encouraging.💗
I loved your comment about the cycle of "wanting, buying, (not) wearing". That was an eye opener for me. I do exactly that. I want, I buy, but I don't always wear. I think it's because the item is so attractive to me (almost like a piece of art), and I love to look at it in my closet. But for various reasons, it may not be practical or suit my lifestyle or my body shape. An aha! moment.
I made a resolution for New Years to finally make a budget and make drastic changes in my savings and finances. I came across your video of a NoBuy/LowBuy year and watched them all. I took your recommendation and watched Hannah's as well. You have inspired me to make huge needed changes and have given me such useful tips and information for lifestyle changes I've needed drastically. Thank you so much for sharing your journey!! I'm so glad I came across you and your channel!!❤
I love that there is a big group of people now that really are realizing how damaging the American(I'm American) mentality is in terms of excessive consumption/consumerism. It's really inspiring to see so many people coming together in this community & decide that enough is enough. They play into our emotions to get us to buy stuff we dont need with money we dont have to impress people we dont like. Buy less, buy better. Save you coins. Win.
OMG how crazy is it that we search for a piece, buy the piece, and never wear the piece! I did an impromptu clear out of my spring/summer wardrobe last week and was ashamed of how many items still had the tags. I’m getting ready to to take on my fall/winter which I know will be the hardest of the two. Videos like this help refocus me and give me a bit more courage to go for it - even if it’s just a start. X
I would like to make a suggestion. You are looking for "the perfect white collar shirt" and I noticed you have a closet full of them. I suggest wearing them around the house for several hours each and seeing which one feels the most comfortable to you or makes you feel the most like yourself. Add that one to your capsule since you obviously love a white collard shirt and resell the rest on Facebook or ebay to help pay off debt.
I really needed to hear this. As I listen to your deeper thoughts I hear myself in reference to how I feel about myself being tied to everything I buy. We’re all overwhelmed but please don’t give up.
Thank you for continuing to post and do check in's for low buys and no buys. I'm attempting a no buy this year and watching you talk about your struggles with shopping and spending, I felt like you were taking the words right out of my mouth. I shop when I'm stressed/depressed and and in more in debt / stressed bc of it! So Im hoping this year I will be able to really make the changes I need within myself to be successful and achieve financial freedom. Love your videos!
I found your channel after looking for ways to learn about no-buys/low-buys. You are so intelligent and insightful. I decided to do a no-buy on gym clothes/shoes, clothes in general, makeup and skincare. It's brining up way more internal challenges than I ever expected and it's only been one week! In my dark place, I feel poor, old and unattractive. It's an ego-based feeling of loss of status.
This year my goal is to save money for: 1. Travel ✈️ and 2. Emergency fund 🚨 So I'm trying the low buy and no buy lifestyle, I told my bf that we can't buy any more food cuz we have a lot and sometimes we go out and spend money on food, so we are trying to clean the refrigerator and make a budget for the thing we really really need (of course if we ran out of milk we buy more, or things like that) also clothes, shoes, make up (even tho I don't wear much make up) skincare, etc. I'm on the "high point" but I know it's not going to be easy, that's why I love seeing your videos, I feel like I'm doing this with a friend💪🏽
When you opened your draw and I saw how you organised your clothes within said draw, it changed my life. Thank you. Genuinely, I struggle with cavernous storage that never ends because it's just full of stuff and I only used what was at the front. So I'm getting rid of it and bringing in slim storage solutions as a way of enabling me to see exactly what I have but the way you store your clothes in your chest of drawers will assist me immeasurably! Side by side, not stacked on top of each other. I'm new to your channel and really enjoying your videos.
I am starting an office job for the first time, so I was kind of forced to buy some professional items, such as blouses and a nice skirt. However, I realized that I thought I need an entirely new wardrobe now but stopped myself from buying everything I 'think' I need. Especially after watching all your "what I wear in a week" and office-friendly attire videos. It is good to realize that I actually have enough clothing
Hi Lara. In case you want some inspiration this is a video from Daria Andronescu about the creation of a capsule wardrobe for business casual dress code: ua-cam.com/video/qoC7RSXyF3M/v-deo.html
I just thought about if you were going to update us on your low buy 2020. :) i've unsubbed from emails that kept pushing me to buy their products. thanks for the check in and we are in your corner rooting you on! Happy BIrthday and You got this!
I'm definitely a lover of the capsule wardrobe but it took me a few years to get it right. This winter is the first capsule I have that I'm totally happy with. What helped me most was going through my wardrobe and finding pieces I was missing before each season started. So for winter this year, I knew I needed a black blazer and a wool skirt and once I found those, my closet felt complete and I didn't feel the need to shop anymore. It doesn't need to be perfect the first time, give yourself a break and practice will make it come together :)
Have you heard of the budgetary method called Kakeibo? This is really a good old fashion budget method. For me, writing things down has much more impact than an app or online system. I’ve started doing this with clothes as well. When I dress, I write down what I wore, how I felt about it and what I wear most. Reflecting on all purchases, things needed, wanted and what has actually been used helps me curb impulse purchases. Love your idea of going over weekly purchases.
Here’s a thought, put some of the things not in your current capsule in your trunk and take the jeans out, hanging the ones that are part of the capsule. I love the capsule concept but I’m waaaaay to far beyond that to get there any time soon. However my new thought process that “gets” the capsule concept helps propel me through this low buy time I’m seeking to be in. I don’t need to have so much! I have a LOT! So this year I am dedicating to shopping my own closet. As I move through each season I am evaluating which pieces I am wearing, if I can style all the pieces I have in ways that I love. If not it’s time to let go. Overall thought is it’s a journey. It didn’t take one day to get this way, it won’t take one day to reduce it. As you say it’s a matter of changing life style! I’m excited and hoping to slowly see positive change! Keep up the good work! We can do it!
If you ever are interested in finding new solutions to organize your wardrobe, would you mind sharing with us what worked and what didn't work? I live in two different places right now and I'm trying to find a way to keep my clothes in a nice way that allows me to see all I have without much work. It's just an idea! It was a lovely video by the way, I can relate a lot to that last onion part of it!
Totally! I need to brainstorm some solutions and budget a little if I need to invest in some storage, so I think that’ll be next month. Haha yes the onion! 😂🤗
hi again! i'm right there with you. i've decided to commit to aggressively paying back my student loans this year. the amount i have makes paying it back in one year impossible, but once i become more accustomed to being frugal hopefully this is something i can carry through my life. i have financial goals besides lining other people's pockets. its so hard to keep this in mind, which is why i have failed every other time i have attempted to be this way :( just have to keep trying though, keep fixing my mindset. i almost wish i was in some sort of club or meetup where we could discuss our progress every week and hold each other accountable, because i tend to pretend everything is fine to everyone in my life while feeling deeply shameful in private.
@@Christinamychas and while you think about it/work on it, uses i envision it for are: 1. checking in weekly (or however much we want) on our expenditures, savings, and debt repayment 2. discussions around sacrifices we are making, lifestyle changes 3. helpful tools, tricks, etc 4. other posts about our feelings and where were coming from and how unpacking that can help us not shop emotionally and be more conscious when those feelings come up and redirect. just some ideas about what i might want to talk to others about/track :)
what size do you get in the lhll sweatshirts? I love them - I have the crops and literally wear them 24/7 especially in Canadian winter, so I am dying for a sweatshirt from them, but want that perfect oversize but not too much fit (which you've got going on!)
Stay focused on your debt and reward yourself by building your savings as you go. You’ll overcome the stressors because you value peace of mind and yourself. Short term delayed gratification for a long term gain.
You sound just like me! I still have too many clothes despite decluttering twice. I have to declutter again because I too want to love the clothes I own and wear. I am finding it really easy not to buy anything else but for reasons unknown I am having trouble of getting rid of more clothes I own.
I can relate to the part of wanting, buying and then not using but for me it’s because I keep telling myself that I’ll wear everything as soon as I lose weight 😩
Hi Christina, I am doing a No-Buy January too and, I am excited to try this out. I don't have a ongoing issues with overspending but the last 6 months of last year I spent quite a lot of money.. So, I am thinking that for 2020 that I may do one month on, one month off re: no spending/spending. I haven't completely decided yet, i will spend this month making a plan :)
P.S. I neglected to mention, but I don't own a credit card.. Mainly because my parents drummed it into my head as a teenager so luckily I don't have that, but I do have my university debt which I am hoping to pay off July- September of this year. I feel a bit silly doing this as I may be going to to uni next year to change careers which has been taking up a lot of my mental energy for some years now (I work in health here in Australia and I am just over it!) But I just have a vision in my head of wanting to see my student debt at $0.00 by the end of this year! I feel like it'll look good on my credit rating as I do want to buy a house one day in the not too distant future.. So many plans and going back to uni for potentially 4 years while still working is a big commitment and to be honest I am very nervous about it.. I have so much to consider this year. I just hope to get some clarity on things, that is the big goal for me this year. :)
is anyone else in the comments doing a low buy, or minimalist challenge or posts content similar? not promoting my own cause ive barely started, but just wanted to find more youtubers to keep in touch with!
Cinzia from the “ personal philosophy project “ is doing a no buy . She already succeeded at it last year and carrying it over this year too . Her videos are very insightful
Awesome to find your channel I'm doing a No Buy for all of 2020 and always looking for inspiration and new ideas. Totally subscribing and hoping to get some help along the way!
This year is definitely a challenging year for myself as I am going for no buy year..So far I am doing good but did cheat as I did buy about few cash envelopes and a binder book for me doing budgeting ....When Feb comes, I definitely going to ban myself from no buy at all...
Clothes are like lovers---if we hunt them as sport and collect too many of them, even the exceptional ones lose that which would make them unique, thrilling, significant, and memorable. Here's to a year of self-awareness, great growth, and better choices!
@@Christinamychas LOL! I just posted a promise not to buy more lipsticks...I was looking at my lip color carousel, and was ashamed to see the number of "one night stands" I've accumulated. I keep searching for the perfect one, knowing well that it does not exist!
My year started off with a low. Had a devastating loss of a friend. Needed an item to wear to the funeral. Spent way too much and bought several things. Just found out I need a new car. I am trying not to get me down and keep telling myself, today is a new day. I recognize that I emotionally shopped and I need to move forward.
I’m not certain, but I think my problem with decluttering my clothes is that I’m finding it extremely difficult to settle on a workable colour scheme. The items that I ‘Love’ fall into different styles and colours and so do not always match up, forcing me to have way too many options and requirements to make them work in a capsule wardrobe. I want and need to declutter so am not giving up, but it isn’t easy.
I am feeling the same way. I wear and use everything in my wardrobe, but it's too much and too overwhelming for me personally. but its hard to know and choose what should stay and what should go. I am trying to become a minimalist and I have been good in all aspects except sweaters and long sleeves :/
Have you considered getting a clothing rack to put your capsule on? I was thinking of doing that and then leaving the rest of my clothing in it's regular storage (closet and dresser).
My fiancé is being an ass so I’ve been on it hard! Looking forward to my new goodies! We actually have our wedding breakfast tasting tonight and I don’t even want to go.
The goal tomorrow morning is to pull out everything I have in my closet that has a tag hanging still. Either gifts or purchases. I have no idea what's in there so I'm in for a surprise. #nobuy
I went to the mall today to visit the Apple genius store for advice. While I was there, I checked a couple of stores to see if they had a black cardigan/coatagan/ blazer worth buying. That’s the only current item I’m allowing myself to invest in. I bought NOTHING. I’ll log this as a success, however; I did buy wine at Trader Joe’s on the way home. Also, my hair and outfit weren’t on point, so I might have been experiencing low self image. Tomorrow is another day-another great and successful day.
I wrote to say, I too appreciate you sharing your low buy journey as well as your new capsule wardrobe. You channel gives me company during this challenging journey.
You should also check out Emma Hill videos for ideas. She is not strict capsule but has a fabulous wardrobe featuring Jeans, Blazers, Jumpers, T-shirts and great autumn/winter coats. She is also fun to watch with a great personality.
i have quit from instagram, i think it's the world of envy and bad feelings. Now i watch only a few youtube video on real minded people like you and Signe from use less. I used to love fashion so much and i was a shopaholic, now i don't care about my clothes, i can go out with a tracksuit and wear the same knit three time in a row! i don't want to spend money on stupid things!
I have to make a commitment to not buying any more lip products. I have gotten my clothes under control, but my lipstick collection is already ridiculous, and I bought two more this morning. So, here it is, universe: "I hereby promise NOT to buy any lip color products until July 20, 2020." Signed and posted---IRC
It helps me to not buy new clothes knowing how inhumane sweatshops can be and how much fast fashion contributes to waste, and not being able to afford 100€ ethical clothes all the time. If I have to walk past clothes shops in the mall now, I get repulsed.
I would hold on to the surplus clothes a bit longer and not declutter ruthlessly. Don't forget, there are three more seasons to come, so even if you're not "feeling" an item right now, it might still serve you in a later season. Also, at the moment you're clearly learning and getting a grasp on your clothes. I find it just as wasteful to declutter clothes that might still be perfect for you just because you feel like you have too much. Maybe for example you have five pairs of black pants that fit you well. Why declutter three of the five pants when they're basic pants that fit well and will not go out of style? Why not keep them for the moment when the first two have worn out? I have a very full wardrobe and have been shopping less over the last half year. However, I only decluttered clothes that didn't fit anymore, that were worn out or that I truly didn't feel good in.
I can totally relate. I've struggled with my shopping addiction for a long time now. i realize Im kinda randomly asking but does anybody know of a good place to stream newly released tv shows online?
@Bentlee Issac I would suggest FlixZone. Just google for it =)
@Bentlee Issac i use Flixzone. Just search on google for it =)
That part about actually wearing your clothes being foreign territory to you is sooo damn relatable

So Im hoping this year I will be able to really make the changes I need within myself to be successful and achieve financial freedom. Love your videos!
I'm excited to see your wardrobe in the spring summer.
No buy January over here as well. We got this.
I’m feeling the same. I’m really inspired by you, I’m trying the low buy this year, no buy january and capsule wardrobe for the winter season. Thanks
I just recently discovered your lowbuy videos and I binge watched them all! I feel so inspired to change something about my life now!
This year my goal is to save money for:
1. Travel ✈️ and 2. Emergency fund 🚨
So I'm trying the low buy and no buy lifestyle, I told my bf that we can't buy any more food cuz we have a lot and sometimes we go out and spend money on food, so we are trying to clean the refrigerator and make a budget for the thing we really really need (of course if we ran out of milk we buy more, or things like that) also clothes, shoes, make up (even tho I don't wear much make up) skincare, etc. I'm on the "high point" but I know it's not going to be easy, that's why I love seeing your videos, I feel like I'm doing this with a friend💪🏽
You are among friends! You got this!
It’s the Konmari folding method if you were curious! Xo thank you 🥰
I am starting an office job for the first time, so I was kind of forced to buy some professional items, such as blouses and a nice skirt.
I stopped trying to find the perfect white button up. Love the low-buy life style.
Yay for a new video! I'm trying a low-buy year inspired by you :)
That’s a great idea! Thank you! And I love your outlook for this year - I feel the same ❤️
I'm doing the same. So far so good. Capsule too.
I’m so motivated. Thanks for this video. 😀
hi again! i'm right there with you. i've decided to commit to aggressively paying back my student loans this year. the amount i have makes paying it back in one year impossible, but once i become more accustomed to being frugal hopefully this is something i can carry through my life. i have financial goals besides lining other people's pockets. its so hard to keep this in mind, which is why i have failed every other time i have attempted to be this way :( just have to keep trying though, keep fixing my mindset. i almost wish i was in some sort of club or meetup where we could discuss our progress every week and hold each other accountable, because i tend to pretend everything is fine to everyone in my life while feeling deeply shameful in private.
I was thinking to create a Facebook group for this reason - would you guys be into that? You can do it. Get that debt gone!

@@Christinamychas i would 100% be down!!! please let me/us know when you have started it, and i will join!
Medium! It’s actually on sale right now too! Xo
This is the best inspiration I've had for months - thanks so much.

New subscriber! Love your channel 💕Thanks for sharing! Going to follow along on your no buy Jan! Thanks for the inspiration and experience chat!
Thank you for sharing your story/journey.
Happy birthday month! It’s my daughter’s, mom’s and fave aunt’s birthday month too! Lots of beautiful and amazing women born this month 🥳
Irai Rod Irai always coming in hot with the wisdom! I love this ❤️❤️
@@Christinamychas LOL!
I’m so sorry for your loss 😔 but you’re outlook is in the right place - keep going and take care ❤️
#StyleApothecaSquad!!💜🙋🏾♀️ Happy Birthday Month.🎁🎉🎊 . Love the Content.
I am feeling the same way. I wear and use everything in my wardrobe, but it's too much and too overwhelming for me personally. but its hard to know and choose what should stay and what should go. I am trying to become a minimalist and I have been good in all aspects except sweaters and long sleeves :/
Hi! I can definitely relate. I've been on a low buy as well and it's so damn hard but WE GOT THIS!
P.S- What filter are you using in this video?
💋SuckaFree Nellz Thank you! I’m using my own color correction + Matti’s CINELUTS on top
Have you considered getting a clothing rack to put your capsule on? I was thinking of doing that and then leaving the rest of my clothing in it's regular storage (closet and dresser).
That’s a good idea!
Your hair looks fabulous 😍
Omg thank you!
Looking forward to the declutter. 😊
You will do it! Love from Germany 👍
Thank you. We're very much alike and I get so much inspiration from you.
I'm doing a low spend January. So far I've spent $36.00 on food and fuel. I am budgeting myself money for food&fuel...no shopping!!
You should consider having your clothe taylored
My fiancé is being an ass so I’ve been on it hard! Looking forward to my new goodies! We actually have our wedding breakfast tasting tonight and I don’t even want to go.
😔 lots of love Hayley
The goal tomorrow morning is to pull out everything I have in my closet that has a tag hanging still. Either gifts or purchases. I have no idea what's in there so I'm in for a surprise. #nobuy
'It's my birthday month' #mood
i needed this video
And if I’m going back for one onion I’m gonna get the biggest one available lol
i have quit from instagram, i think it's the world of envy and bad feelings. Now i watch only a few youtube video on real minded people like you and Signe from use less. I used to love fashion so much and i was a shopaholic, now i don't care about my clothes, i can go out with a tracksuit and wear the same knit three time in a row! i don't want to spend money on stupid things!
I’m being curious/ nosey, has this new decision affected your relationships, especially with your partner?
Kathleen Barron I can talk about that in another video soon! Xo
Co-signed as your witness by me! Xo you got this!
@@Christinamychas Thank you! We got this!
It helps me to not buy new clothes knowing how inhumane sweatshops can be and how much fast fashion contributes to waste, and not being able to afford 100€ ethical clothes all the time. If I have to walk past clothes shops in the mall now, I get repulsed.
Glad you got your onion 😂
😂😂 so much onion
