How to Dry Roses

Today I’m drying a rose from an event. Drying flowers from a bouquet is a great way to preserve the memory of a special day. There are many different ways to preserve flowers. The preservation method I will be using today is one of the most basic, super simple methods for drying roses that you can do.
Really, there isn’t even any equipment necessary to dry flowers, even big ones like roses. Rather, the trick is in the technique. You want to dry your flowers upside down, in a cool, low-humidity place, out of direct sunlight.
To do this, I chose to clip the bottom of my rose stem into a magnetic refrigerator magnet and leave it hanging on my refrigerator for a week. You could also tie a string and hang it upside down. Basically any method will work, as long as nothing is smashing the petals and it has plenty of dry air around it to dry out in.
The method of drying one flower at a time is great for roses, which are large flowers with a lot of moisture in them. For smaller, less moist flowers such as lavender, large bunches can be dried at once using the same method.
You’ll need to let your flower dry for at least a full week, but letting it go for two is even better, just to be sure.
The results are beautiful, colorful, dried flowers and a great way to preserve a bouquet. I hope this video was helpful for anyone looking for a way to keep their roses.

Thank you! I’ve been looking for a way to preserve and frame some roses I have. Most people recommended pressing them and I didn’t like the outcome but this is a much greater way in my opinion. Can’t wait to try it!

Hello!!! I'm so grateful I came across your informative video. Unexpectedly today I was gifted with about 3 dozen (translate -> armful :) of big fat (cabbage?) roses & had No IDEA how to go about drying them. Yours is the 1st video I came across after reading several articles and yours is by far the simplest. I'm going to try it your way; no muss no fuss LOL So A Big Thank You for that ~ your gracious attention to detail is helpful to know what to expect and your personal stories add so much interest clearly you put some (happy!) thought into your production.
A client of my agency came in, was great to catch up & since I knew she worked at a flower shop I asked about how business was during a "pandemic lock down". . . and how wonderful to know people are still going on with their lives & celebrating events!! On a whim I asked what they do with their older flowers & when I expressed interest (my only thinking was maybe making pretty potpourri? for myself). 10 minutes after she left I get a call from her and just like that ~ my day has been made!!!
Now some might be disgruntled that it took so long for me to just express a simple Thanks but that's what they do ~ naysayers just love to say nay!
So please don't give another thought to changing your video, 10 minutes is a great investment of my time for watching you share your expertise and being generous with your time in putting it all together. I Googled how to dry roses and up popped your lovely video, I have a socks'nsmalls hanger which I can use an will hang them in the spare room. I like this video because you seem super genuine, and none of the process is sped up. This is a very true-to-life tutorial, so thank you! Questions: Do you ever leave the leaves on? I do, so I’m curious if there’s a benefit to taking them off or if it comes down to personal preference. Have you ever experimented with silica gel? Supposedly it helps them keep their shape and color, so I spray my florals with it after they’ve dried.
Hi! I don't personally leave the leaves on. They dry out and get crunchy (same as the petals) but I find it easier to handle them with a cleared stem. There's not real advantage to taking the leaves off other than them not crumbling later. I tend to keep vases of dried roses, to no leaves makes sense for me. If you are only drying one. Leaving the leaves on is an option. ... Also, yes! recently I started using silica gel. I like it! I don't find a huge difference in the outcome, except: silica tends to be faster and you can keep a more filled out shape with silica. Currently I'm using both methods depending on what I'd like to use the dried flower for.

The middles very moist still for me I wen to sun dry them and spread them apart I use these for oils and herbal blends I grind them I can't fit a while rose bud inside the bottle so I just might keep a couple smaller ones whole. And I saved the thorns
How do you use these for oils and herbal blends?
I know the version where you sprey the rose with hairspray. That gives her a bit of shine and, as I've concluded, you can "clean" them from the dust much easier. Maybe I'm the only one having dust in my house, so ppl don't really care. Nevertheless, the overall look of the rose is so much better and prettier with a hairspray.

Yes, indoors is best. It'll stay dry in most instances. Just keep it away from direct moisture. I think of them as being make of paper. If you get it damp and the moisture gets trapped in the petals, it could mold etc. But I usually keep my dried roses in my room or kitchen and don't have a problem, even when running a humidifier. I'd stay away from keeping them in a bathroom with a shower or somewhere similar that receives a lot of moisture.

It does work with the leaves and spikes on. I remove the spikes for safety. The leaves get super brittle though and crack and break off really easily. I remove those to avoid mess.

Hi, do you think my garage would be an okay place to hang the rose? There’s no direct sunlight, but it is very cold in there, will it work if the room is too cold?
I suppose it depends how cold it is. I've only ever tried in my home. If it's just 'cool' you should be totally fine. If it's truly freezing that might be a problem.
Hi, my flowers are in a vase so they are moist, but the internet has said you can’t use moist flowers because they will grow mould, but all of my flowers are moist, can I use these? Will moist flowers work or grow mould?
I always use my flowers that have been in a vase with water. Some will mold at the base of the flower head on the stem while they are in the vase. You can't really use those, unfortunately. I've found that if they are not moldy when you remove them to start the drying process, it doesn't matter if they've been in a vase with water, they won't mold as they dry. --Hope that helps!

They really don't go bad! I've had a few around for years. The only thing is, that they are brittle, so over time, as they get jostled, dusted, etc. they can start to show some wear. I have a few that for from I think 5 years ago now and they look great.

I personally only use this for roses. But I know you can dry lavender in this method and similar flowers to that. Haven't done it in a few years, but never had an issue. With daisies, etc. the petals curl up too much for me, so I don't use this method for those or thinner flowers. For the thinner/flat flowers I usually press them. Hope that helps!
hello my rose have died already , so my question would be could i still keep the pedals and if so what could i do withthem in this condition , could i do oils or other stuff?ect... please help!!
Hi, that depends. If they had a lot of moisture and have mold or mildew, there's not much you can do and need to dispose of them. But if they are dried and just loose but you want to save them, you have options! If you want to use them and let them be gone, adding them to a bath or bath products work. You can turn them into potpourri, or add them to a candle. If you'd like to keep them long term and they are loose I'd suggest adding structure, maybe glue them to a backing, felt or a photo and display in a shadow box, or frame. You can add them to resin to keep that way as well. Basically, my advice is, to stop them moving and shaking around in whatever you chose to keep them in, as they will be brittle and delicate. You can. I've heard of that. I just don't personally do it.
I would like to make dry flower wall. Will bugs be attracted to the wall?
I don't believe so... but I'm not sure. I've never done a wall with them. I do have several vases full of dried flowers in my home and have never seen any bugs on them though, so I imagine not.

Hi, I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm not an expert on that. I suppose it depends on if you'd like to preserve a whole rose or dry out some of the petals. If you are planning on closing the bible and adding the petals to the pages I would suggest that route. You can pluck the petals out and carefully lay them out on smooth (non-textured tissue paper). Cover them with more tissue paper. (I've never had issue with color bleed, but maybe use white tissue if they are really special flowers just in case). Maybe two or three layers of tissue paper on both sides. Press in between heavy books for 2-3 weeks. I believe you then use a gel to affix the flowers to the page. Gesso came up when I googled it. I know there are a few tutorials on UA-cam for exactly this. If you try "Bible Art Journaling". I think the tutorials that come up would be helpful.
Can you spray them with a scent like a rose?
Yes, you totally can. Just don't saturate them with liquid. Try to just mist it on. It will be great at first but with time, it will fade.
Can we put more than one together , like I have 20 roses ?
Yes, I do that all the time. I stagger the roses so there's the longest one, then have the next rose head against that one's stem, so the two rose heads aren't together. One is higher up than the other. As long as the roses have enough air around them to dry you can put several together. My magnetic clips max out a bout 3-5 steams depending on the size/weight of the roses. As long as they aren't dragging your clips down, it should work.
can i tape them against the fridge?
Yes, that would also work, but may leave tape residue on the fridge. I'd still tape them as close to the end of the stem as you can. :)
First time here. I was in my Doctor's office a little while ago and saw her drying roses on her wall...... of course I asked her about them, etc.. THEN.......She showed me a vase full of dark red roses that STILL were pretty opened ( They just were Darkened ) so I asked her how....... She said AFTER drying them SHE SPRAYED THEM WITH HAIRSPRAY !!!!!! SHE SAID THAT WAS A YEAR AGO.....AMAZING LOOKING THEY WERE!!! Have you tried that? PLUS, I LOVE the fact that girls at the High School Age ( Your girlfriend and Yourself ) liked the idea of drying flowers and keeping bouquets of them in your rooms.

How long do they last for
The roses last basically until you break them or throw them away. If they are in direct light they will fade a bit and even in shade over a few years they will eventually drain of color. As far as lasting, they don't go bad. But they do get really brittle, so if you bump them or knock them about they petals could break off. --Hope that helps.

Hi, yes. Anywhere that is dry (doesn't get humid like a bathroom etc.) and out of direct sunlight should work well.

Oh no! That’s frustrating. I’ve found for me that the best results come from keeping the flowers out of direct sunlight and making sure the area I’m drying them in has a lot of good air flow but not much moisture. Hopefully the future ones work for you!

Yes, technically, but they get get super brittle and break off very easily. Also, I've never had my leaves dry flat, they've always curled up on me. But you can leave them on without it affecting the process.
I've tried it before and as long as you handle it carefully it stays quite well and doesn't curl/ fall off

You can, but in my experience they get so brittle and break off and make a mess. So it's not worth it for me. But they won't hurt anything, and it'll still dry out. :)
The only place I have to hang my rose is the garage, which it out of direct sunlight but it is very cold in there. Will it work if the room is very cold?
Yes! Florists store flowers in refrigerators so the cold shouldn’t hurt.

I inverted my roses to air dry but all become brown colour:( any idea why is that so?
I'm sorry to hear that. I'm not sure why they would turn brown. I know my roses turn brown in the vase of water if I leave them too long prior to drying them. They might have been too moist and took too long to dry out maybe?

To use the dried roses in lip gloss? I'm not sure. Roses are safe to eat and are considered edible. However this drying method keeps all the petals together, it might allow something to grow deep in the bud, like a bacteria or something. Also the petals get quite brittle and might snap apart in the gloss. Sorry, I don't know more, but hope that helps. :)

If you dry them like that they usually get brown with time
After a few years, yes, they will start to discolor. If you keep them in the shade it helps slow the process I find. :)

I enjoyed your video, though it's a bit too long for such simple info. A couple suggestions: You need to speak more clearly & LOUDLY . . . not in such quiet, hushed tones. Do a couple test videos & listen to them before uploading them to UA-cam -- to be certain a wide audience (all ages) will be able to hear/understand what info you're trying to get across . . . Make videos shorter & more concise by creating a brief outline/list of key points to cover in your talk, so your piece is more focused. Keep at it & you'll acquire even more subscribers!!

There is this really nifty technological advance included on UA-cam, yeah it's a beautiful thing especially for use with instructional videos. It is called SUBTITLES/CLOSED CAPTIONS and it will actually put her words written right across the screen for you. Oh! and it's conveniently placed near the bottom of the vid ~ that's what the "CC" means LOL hope this helps

I got my rose yesterday when should I start with the process? Should I put my rose in the water too?
I usually put mine in water and enjoy them for a week or two until they start to wilt. Then take them out and dry them. Then you get the best of both worlds!
