    I appreciate the tips on places to eat that you share in your videos. I wanted to share an opinion on a lechonera/restaurant in Cayey, that's not on the Pork Highway, but I feel is better than the ones in Guavate. It's called EL CUNAO, and it's on a mountain road (PR-1) in Cayey, right on a curve. I must admit, it's been more than 5 years since I went there, but it was so good that it really made a lasting impression with me. TRUE authentic tasting Puerto Rican food is hard to find lately in Puerto Rico. I don't know why, but I really find that to be the case. So when you find it, it sticks with you. The time that we went, it was with a group of family, and there were a lot of different dishes ordered, and EVERYTHING I tasted and sampled was spot on. Fresh tasting, perfectly seasoned, and great flavors. Whether it was the meats, the stews, the rices, the beans, or whatever, everything was great, and tasted like the great, authentic PR flavors that I grew up on. Even though it's labeled as a lechonera, think of it more of a restaurant, because they feature a lot more than just pork. Last time I passed it, it was closed, which broke my heart. But if you are ever in the area, I would definitely recommend it. It's a sit down, with good service, good food, and reasonable prices.
    Five years ago is a long time, and who knows, maybe things have changed, but if you are in the area and give it a try, let me know what you think. And if you know of a great traditional criollo restaurant, let us know.

    Im glad to see an accurate representation of pastelillos, empanadas, and empanadillas in particular.
    They are, in fact, the same thing. The name we give them depends mostly on where we grew up. I dont remember ever hearing "empanadas" in P.R., but I do hear it in southern or central american cultures.

      Haha thank you! The coffee is good here, but most Puerto Rican’s pass on the indigenous fare for KFC, McDonalds, Burger King, etc. It’s a shame to see a vendor selling the good stuff with an empty stall and the Taco Bell drive through with a line around the corner. SMH.

    • @BriksTravelGuides
      @BriksTravelGuides  2 роки тому +2

      I agree. I guess it’s because most fast food places are cheaper and more convenient for the day to day. However, on the weekends and days off I think people tend to go for the local food joints and restaurants.

      @BriksTravelGuides  2 роки тому

      Hey!! Thank you for your comment! I’m glad you enjoyed the video! 😄🙌🏼🇵🇷 So, we call cod fish bacalao, so bacalaitos is derived from that, but for sure it has to have some sort of connection to baccala haha

      @43Magicman 2 роки тому +2

      Bacalaitos, or cod fritters, are a Puerto Rican staple. They are flat and chewy on the inside and crispy on the outside. Bacalaitos are typically sold at food kiosks along the country's beaches. Although they first appeared during the time of the Spanish explorers, they originated in Africa.

    Hi. Love your informational videos. My family and I are planning to have a family reunion celebration in Fajardo PR in late July 2023.
    That said, I have a couple of questions I hope you can help with.
    1. Some of our family members have pork and shellfish allergies. Can recommend any restaurants the will accommodate a customer for food allergies?
    2. As a family, we have lodging figured out. The only thing we need to find is an outdoor place for us to grill/cook. Maybe a public park and/or renting a place that will accommodate approximately 40 people.

    That whole pastelillo, empanda, and empanadilla thing has caused confusion my whole life. To add to the confusion, my aunt makes me these empanadas de yucca, which are basically individually wrapped pasteles de yucca, which I like with ground beef, but other in my family prefer with stewed pork.
    I don't drink, but a virgin Pina Colada is one of the greatest, if not the greatest frozen drink in the world. Sometimes you get a funky one with artificial flavors, but a good one is hard to beat.
    Mofongo is hard to find done right lately. Usually it's not salty enough, not garlicky enough, and without chicharon, and ends up bland. Done right it is great. Does the spot at Lote 23 do it right?
    I always enjoy Bebo's BBQ. It's usually my first destination after leaving the airport. It's frustrating cause the line is usually so long, but it's worth it. Next time I go to PR, my first destination might be Pirilo Pizza Rustica in Ocean Park, which some consider the best pizza in PR. Not as close to the airport, but still pretty close.
    Ah, my beloved quesitos. It's a daily thing for me when in PR. I have them any time of the day, and try them from as many places as possible. My favorites have been from this little supermarket called Unico in the mountain barrio of Palmasola in Canovanas, and from a bakery (Mi Panaderia) in Juncos next to Las Pinas, right on the main road. I will have to try one from Hornofino.

      Hey! First of all, thank you for being such an engaged viewer and for leaving so many wonderful comments! I appreciate it a lot and I’m glad my videos have brought you great memories! The mofongo at El Cuchifrito is absolutely amazing! Next time you visit the island you should check it out. I would say it’s one of the best one’s I’ve tried. And I also agree that the pizza at Pirilos is probably the best one in all of the island. Recently I went to the one located in Old San Juan and I thought it could have been better, though. I’ve gone to the one at Ocean Park and I’ve never been disappointed so try that one! Also, if you want to try some amazing quesitos (apart from the ones at Hornofino) try the ones at Panadería Fernández in Carolina, they are mouth watering! 🤤🙌🏼🇵🇷😄

      @@BriksTravelGuides I'm taking notes, y sin duda voy a tratar los quesitos de Fernandez. Wherever I'm staying in Puerto Rico, I always try to find a great panaderia nearby for breakfast. I love to enjoy a great breakfast sandwich, with fresh bread. Sad, funny, interesting story: One day we were staying in Humacao. The next morning I tried getting advice from a local at a gas station. I asked for a good panaderia to get good breakfast sandwiches. He had trouble coming up with an answer, and finally said SUBWAY. I almost died. Facepalm moment.

I have eaten in Mexico and love the traditional food their as well. Fast food places do a poor job at traditional PR cooking. You have to go to the well-known places, that are known to cook them as done traditionally in PR, or by a person who knows how to prepare them properly, otherwise you get poor quality. It is the same in Mexico.
