- This short from Dan Childs and Nick Werber beautifully captures the way one community is learning to live in balance with their environment. For decades the people in the Manu region of Peru have used slash-and-burn as their primary farming technique. Realizing that there would soon be no forest left if this practice continued, Reynaldo Ochoa began experimenting with different approaches to farming the land. He's now dedicated to reforesting the region and teaching residents more sustainable alternatives to deforestation, like agroforestry and permaculture.

I am crying because here where I live deforestation is at a rapid pace. I understand that we need to clear up some land for infrastructure but some projects are very questionable. Hope I can be like some of the heroes here and give back to nature.

This story and others like it is what the world needs. A wise and good man that leaves little carbon foot print behind and always considers the future for our children. He deserves more than a pat on the back. Give this guy the Nobel prize.

Just as there is deforestation there is reforestation. I understand that we cut trees to create the necessities of life but is it so much of a task and a burden to plant a tree? I mean everyone can do it. It requires no skill man.

But I thought that the rainforest ground was very barren - with most of the usable nutrients being in the things, (mosses & ferns), actually living on the branches of the trees.
Though maybe I'm wrong if he's succeeding.
