The Tom & Jerry - the most cozy, fluffy holiday drink ever!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 чер 2024
- Today’s drink is a cozy one - the Tom & Jerry! This is a holiday favorite that's been around for 200 years. What makes it so memorable is the texture - something created by using a batter. The batter should be enjoyed fresh, and most recipes require a large group to consume it all - so it really is perfect for a holiday party. This is a smaller recipe that's perfect for 2-3 people, but it's easily scaleable to serve the masses - if that's your goal. Liberties can, and should be taken. It's common to replace the hot water with hot milk, essentially creating hot eggnog. Or, if you want it richer, you could add softened butter to the batter and steer this drink closer to a hot buttered rum. Whatever approach you choose, may this fluffy, comforting drink warm your bones. Cheers!

Did I miss my calling? Should I be making cooking videos instead?

You should definitely do a cooked custard based eggnog recipe now…
I'm definitely trying this as soon as my bar is functional, 19 years of age and I'm a assistant teacher for bartending. I want to introduce this to my students once I get an opportunity to. cheers 🍻 Andres as always.
From the cake angle.
Eggs at room temperature.
Whisk the egg whites first, transfer to another bowl. The reason is that the yolks contain fat, and fat is bad when whisking egg whites. You need a very clean bowl for the whipping.
Then add the egg yokes and other incredients and beat using the mixer. You can get specialist paddles that scrape and beat. You want the mixture to go pale, and you want all the sugar to disolve. Hence the caster sugar bit. 10-15 minutes. Surprising long.
Next to combine. Use a spatula. Fold in half, just half, of the egg whites. This lossens the mix. Then fold in the rest. That approach keeps the most air in the mixture.
@@Nickle314 thanks for this!

Anders, the cocktail history part is what makes your videos unique to other channels. You’re so engaging, it’s almost like I’m sitting at a bar with a charismatic bartender who’s telling me the history of what I’m drinking. Never think that anyone’s bored by it!
To be honest you also have the best cinematography of all the other channels as well :)
@@trojanthegreat Let's give it up to Az for cinematography 🥳
Agree with this. Keep it up, Anders.
If you're interested in this kind of stuff, I recommend checking Glenn and Friends Cooking channel. It's mostly cooking (no duh) but he does occasional cocktail as well, and most of recipes are from old cookbooks/bartender guides.
I', a history major so I love it. I believe as with most things, history serves to give context which then makes the story, or drink more character, and not just a simple receipt.
I don't care if people want you to skip the history part but honestly I think it's such a great part of the show!!
There are time stamps for those people. The history is important to me too.
I agree ! One of my favorite parts
I’m 62 now,I can remember my parents making this drink for the Holidays.I believe my dad still has the whole Tom&Jerry set, including the bowl !
Love it - time to bust that set out! Cheers!
That's so cool! I'm about 10 years younger than you, and my wife and I have her parents' old Tom & Jerry Bowl and Cups. Years ago I made a batch of T&,J mix and put it on the bar for our holiday party. Sadly, so many people these days think drinks like this are "weird" or "gross." Sigh!
I seem to remember hearing of Tom and Jerrys served in silver cups- like mint julep cups, I guess. What do your bowl and cups look like?
@@censusgary white ceramic or milk glass with red decoration on them
@@ct9737 Cool!
Liquor stores used to sell small tubs of both egg nog and Tom & Jerry batter. Ahh the good old days!
Tip for when you don’t have caster sugar - just put your sugar in to a food processor for like 15-20 seconds and it will be caster sugar, you can also use a coffee grinder for this. Great video anders, making this week, can’t believe I’ve never heard of this one? Cheers! As a baker I would also make the adjustment to hand fold the egg yolk mixture as the paddle attachment might take more of the air out of the whipped egg whites.
just don't use a coffee burr grinder, the sugar doesn't have any oils to lubricate the burrs.
@@Ghorda9good catch I think has thinking of those Braun spice/coffee grinders with blades like food processor.
Cheers Merry Christmas/ Happy Holidays
I grew up in Watertown, NY. There’s a super old restaurant called “The Crystal” and its Tom and Jerry season is a time honored tradition! Always a line out the door. T&J are impossible to find in NYC so we make at home now and bought a Tom and Jerry bowl/cup set.
Hi there! I JUST commented about the Crystal in my comment(thiugh i didnt name it🤦♀️)....I live in Watertown....small world!
This drink was my I introduction to cocktails 🤍 as a child I was allowed to have a cup of this every Christmas Eve. Always made with hot milk (of course) and great with sugar cookies!
Such a great tradition - love it!
Don't skip the history, love hearing about it with these recipes.
Watched an old movie yesterday- Never Say Goodbye (1946). The protagonist got sloshed on Tom and Jerrys. So glad to find this video! My dad introduced this classic to me back in the 90s. He served it at his cocktail parties in the 60s-70s. Drinks like this belong at the centerpiece of the holiday parties with all the cool collectible punchbowls and cups.
My wife just bought a vintage mug and punch bowl set from the 50's with Tom & Jerry written on them and was wondering what it referenced. Now I gotta make this for the holidays
In Watertown, NY, now the Home of the 10th Mountain Division, USA, there was a historically significant restaurant. They were Greek-American (Deptheros) and the patron was a graduate of St. Lawrence University (like Kirk Douglas.) Every Christmas and New Year, they offered Tom and Jerry drinks. We could not miss passing by for one or two of them.
I used to live in Minnesota, and the grocery stores would sell containers of Tom & Jerry batter. You added it to a mug with rum or brandy, and added hot water. Loved it! However, since moving to North Carolina, I’ve discovered that it is not available here. This is far better, and is akin to the homemade eggnog I’ve made. Well done, Anders! Keep the great content coming!
I used to live in Minnesota and I remember that too! You can’t get the batter in Florida either. 😢
Same in Wyoming...
I remember it from South Dakota as a kid. This sounds much better.
Huh. As a Minnesotan, I always assumed those Tom and Jerry batter buckets were ubiquitous! Wonder why they're more common up here?
I first had this as a kid, as a special treat during the Holidays! My secret was handed down from my parents, cream not milk, and fresh ground spice makes all the difference!
A few years ago, after reading a great article about Tom & Jerry's, I started making a batched bowl for a celebration with friends. I even found an antique Tom & Jerry bowl and cups for the home bar. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Cheers to all.
I made this drink a week ago for the first time! It was delicious! I used the cocktail codex recipe.
Really cool to see your variation on. It felt like I was taking a baking class 😂
OMG!!! This is so good!!! Again, another great holiday cocktail that is just as good if not better than a hot buttered rum with a way easier batter. Tastes buttery even though there is no dairy in it. Love it! Thanks for turning us on to this, Anders!
Made the Tom & Jerry for the first time as my wife and I worked on Christmas tasks. Loved it!
I have great memories of my first wife's father who always hosted a Tom and Jerry party every year.. He had the full regalia, Tom and Jerry mugs and even a matching batter bowl... They are a wonderful and festive holiday drink.. I'm going to have to make one.. Cheers to you Roland for the memory, and you Anders for sharing this on your channel.
OMG!!! What a fun idea!!!
I also love the history portions of your videos. Thank you! I've been drinking/making T&Js since I was a kid. Our family recipe is much different and the batter is virgin. My kids now love their version and my husband and I love ours.
I love the history pieces you do! Also I hadn't heard of this drink so I made it for my partner and I. Absolutely delicious. I could definitely only drink one because of the richness and sweetness, but well worth the effort! Thanks guys!
My dad always liked Tom and Jerry’s around the holiday season. He introduced me to this unique cocktail. I still enjoy the drink to this day!
Anders, don’t ever think we don’t enjoy the history of cocktails; it is what makes your videos stand out! In my opinion, your whole presentation rocks! Keep up your awesome work and I’ll keep watching! Happy Holidays!
Yesterday we followed your recipe for hot buttered rum. Today was the Tom and Jerry. Both excellent holiday drinks. Your ratios were spot on.
Ten un 2023 maravilloso!! Prepararé este coctail, se ve genial, gracias.
I grew up in Montana. My mom made this in her Tom and Jerry bowl every Christmas. They put booze in theirs, but we kids just had the better in the matching cups. We loved it.
My parents were both from Wisconsin, we are currently in Michigan, and we have been enjoying T&Js during the holidays for my entire lives, and probably theirs as well. Glad you added the hot water; always the way we prepare the cocktail. Happy holidays!
I grew up in the mid-west, and there is this bar from the 1930s with leather booth tables that would serve this drink around Christmas time.
It became a tradition to stop in the Brass Rail and enjoy a Tom & Jerry for Christmas with friends and family!
Had one years ago at Miller’s Pub on Wabash when I worked across the street from it. Great on a cold winter night, helped make the walk to the train much better. Great job on this!
Cooktail Show! I look forward to this spin-off! Im making this today. Great vids as always!
Yes. Thank you. I heard about this concoction a few years ago. I researched it. It seemed like a lot to do for just me. Then I was at a party and they were relocated midwestern northern people and they had it. I tried it. Liked it. But never had the chance to make it. My son is in town tomorrow for our Christmas. We are going to make this.
You’re awesome Anders. Love your channel.
Ok I just tried the recipe and I clapped in delight in my kitchen 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
My wife is from Hawaii and loves the T&J, we live in Wisconsin so it's pretty much a staple. Normally we'll buy store mix but after this I believe I'll try making this for her myself. Thank you kindly for the great video Sir and Happy holidays one and all!
Topped ours off with whole milk instead of water. Ultra-rich and delicious. Perfect Christmas beverage.
Never heard of this, sounds amazing. Thanks and happy holidays!
I’ve been getting into collecting vintage dishware lately, and I actually picked up a set of 1950s Tom and Jerry mugs over the summer! I’d never heard of the cocktail before, I just thought the cups were extremely cute, but now that it’s the holidays, think I’m practically obligated to try this out and use the set as it was originally intended.
Mom and Dad had a set of cups too and they came out every Christmas. Aunt James was in charge of making the drinks…
Wow. Great ski lodge drink. Next to my hot buttered rum that is. I can see this becoming a Christmas brunch favorite. Thanks as always for the great cocktail ideas. 🎄🎄
Love all these holiday drinks! Definitely going to need to try this.
My family has served this for years, and I have several sets of the mugs & bowls. My granddad loved it and passed that down. We've played with the recipe many times and prefer it with warm milk. Never tried bitters in it- will have to do that!
Haven’t had one of these since pre-COVID in Buffalo, NY. Unfortunately the bar that made the Tom and Jerry didn’t survive COVID. Thankfully you have provided me with a recipe that is less than a dozen eggs. I know what the wife and I will be drinking Christmas Eve and probably Christmas Day maybe even Christmas night?
I love drinks with an egg in them, the texture of the cocktail comes out amazing. Between this and the noble beast I'll be set for the rest of the holiday season.
My kind of a holiday season
This is a holiday staple at my parents’ house! I’ve only made the batter once but mom and dad definitely have a Tom and Jerry set at home!
Such a great holiday cocktail🎄
You used to be able to get them at Miller’s Pub in Chicago - it sure if you still can
What does the Tom and Jerry set look like?
I remember as a child my mother loving this drink around the holidays. The name of this drink ALWAYS came to mind at Christmas but I wasn’t sure why. Now I know it was a lovely drink.❤
Just want to say thanks for this video. My mother, aunts and grandmother used to make this drink frequently (along with hot buttered rums and hot toddies) for the adults in our family in the 70s and 80s here in California when I was little. Fond memories! Really appreciate you showing us how to reproduce it! I remember they made it from scratch sometimes (without the bitters), but they also cheated sometimes and bought a ready-made version of the batter in a tub that used to be found in local liquor stores along with other similar batters. You'd scoop them out by the tablespoon and add the booze and water/milk. This is the elevated version!
Nice flannel shirt. I'll need to get a few friends over after the holidays to try this out.
I just would like to say that I thoroughly enjoy your content. I love learning about the history of the cocktails you make and I also enjoy watching you make them. Thank you for all that you do. ❤️ New subscriber!
Thank you for great video. ❤ Inspiring as usual. This time I tweeked your recipe. First I made a syrup with the spices. And then I made a Flip. Skipped the hot water. Same flavors. Different drink. Made a great success with some friends on Christmas night. Tom and Jerry served as a flip.
Merry Christmas Eve! I’ve just made this for my husband and I to enjoy for tonight and oh my it’s delicious!!!! Gonna be a tradition now. 💚🎄🎅🏻
I'm 73 and remember my Mom making these drinks but I believe they made them with whiskey. We always got to have a cup minus the booze. I'll never forget the flavor.
I have never seen a cocktail like this, super interesting... I'm tempted to try it!
Yum! This sounds like my perfect Winter/Holidays drink.
I discovered the Tom &, Jerry a few years ago while living in WI. It's now my favorite holiday drink, especially because it can be made without milk, which I don't drink.
I've seen many varying recipes, this one looks like a winner and will get made soon 🙂
Yes, indeed. Wisconsin was ( and still might be) big time Tom & Jerry country, along with the Upper Peninsula of Mich. We lived in both for many years and enjoyed T&J parties every winter. But now, living in Louisiana, no one has ever heard of them.
So pleased to find this, always had these at Christmas!
Dessert drinks! I love these types of drinks when we go out to the supper clubs
I love the history! It’s my favorite part honestly
I just had this drink for the first time at The Aviary in Chicago yesterday as the last drink in a five cocktail flight! Was pretty tipsy, but still remember it being delicious.
LOVE this. I am going to make this soon!!
Made this last year, def making it this year as well.
Love Tom and Jerrys, due for my stop at a local restaurant that does the each season. 🙂 Thanks for the scaled down recipe too!
OMG this is one of our favorite winter drinks! The bakery down the road makes a homemade batter (non-alcoholic version) that is delicious, but I'm definitely going to try your recipe! Yum!!
I make them multiple times a season. Although my family recipe is different. My parents owned a Bar & Ballroom in small town Iowa and opened our bar on Christmas to give the town free Tom& Jerry's. As a kid it sucked since we had to wait until the bar was closed to get our presents but we did get to sample some. Glad you did this video and recipe.
Thanks for sharing the memory, Rick! I'm sure your parents had some great stories from the Bar & Ballroom - and such a nice thing to offer the public on Christmas! Cheers and happy holidays!
First time making! Just made 6x the batter for this with added butter. These are amazing. Can’t wait for the family to try on Saturday!
yes to the butter
I have some Tom & Jerry mugs, but I had no clue. Kudos for the concise and well put summary.
I just made this last weekend. Never heard of it before but it came up on the Difford's cocktail-of-the-day calendar so I gave it a shot. I so wish I'd looked up your video beforehand, my preparation did not turn out so great from just reading the recipe. Still very warm and cozy drink though ;-)
I’ve not seen your version before, looks amazing! Can’t wait to try it. I thought it was only a Wisconsin thing until now!
Anders, you are an artist in everything you do
Perfect timing as always Anders! I've been working on 25 days of Rum drinks for Christmas so this one fits the mold! Definitely going to give this one a try! Happy Holidays and Cheers!
Ooh - curious what they other 24 are! Hope you enjoy it Sean - Happy Holidays!
@Anders Erickson my original thought was just any rum drink but I've been finding some with festive names so trying to get as many as I can. LOL! So far I've had; Winter Daiquiri, Winter Rum Sour, Downhill Racer, Christmas Rum Cocktail, Holiday Mai Tai, Merry Rumhattan, Hot Buttered Rum Cranberry Daiquiri, the Brass Rail and a Planters Punch. Tonight's will be a Spiced Cider Highball. My favorite so far is the Merry Rumhattan. 2oz of Aged Rum (Appleton 12yr), 1oz Sweet Vermouth, 1/4oz Cranberry syrup, 1/4oz cinnamon syrup and 1 dash of Orange bitters.
I had never heard of it until now and I just made one.
This is the new holiday drink for me.
I made the Noble Beast after seeing your video and the wife loved it. I can’t wait to make this one, as I’m sure it’ll be a favorite and staple for me!! Thanks as always, for taking the time to make such a great video!!!
Grew up in Springfield, Illinois and my folks would always talk about drinking Tom and Jerry's at a particular tavern. I had never seen the recipe before. Will absolutely give this a try.
Hope you enjoy it, Chad!
Just made for the first time.... won't be the last. The spice is nice, fluffyness with nutmeg on top then hitting the warm inside, oh my. Nailed it Anders.
I grew up with my family making these and it is still one of my favorites and because you did this video I subscribed. You're welcome. 😁
Look forward to trying this in winter - here in Australia. Definitely experimenting with cocktails to try and get the spice flavours into a cold drink for the Australian festive period...
Just made this recipe and it was quite tasty! Thanks Anders.
This sounds so good, I have an idea for Christmas now
Been enjoying these for almost 60 yrs
I use one rum, planters punch is good for mixing but haven’t used brandy/cognac in maybe 50 years; always use hot milk and confectioners sugar
I made this last year after watching your video and it gave the whole family a happy. I just use hot milk and leave out that final alcohol and it makes a fantastic kids drink, but you can pull from the same batter to make drinks for adults. Looking up the video to make again this year!
I’m also here for the history part! Love knowing when it’s from and it’s origins!
I live in the Great White North and starting after Thanksgiving, pre-made batter is available in the grocery stores and many liquor stores! I'll have to try my hand at homemade, though. Thanks, Anders!
Hope you give it a try! Cheers, Eric!
I made up a batch using a slightly different recipe, a dozen eggs but the proportions are pretty close to the ones you made. Used hot milk and it was amazing! We will be having them for our family Christmas gatherings over the next few days. I hope the batter holds up in the fridge for a few days.
I had this for the first time last week - man, I’ve been missing out!! 🤯
Haha just finished watching you make it 😂 Happy you enjoyed it!
I was introduced to the Tom & Jerry by old-time radio, I believe "Duffy's Tavern." They're a tradition here in Chicago at Miller's Pub on Wabash, at least as long as I've been alive.
Amazing I was just looking for a recipe for this yesterday after finding out that this is what I thought eggnog was...
Couldn't find one I liked and then my favourite cocktail channel comes out with one!
Never heard of it but I have now and I will certainly try it. Thanks and Happy Holidays 😎
Happy Holidays!
happy to say that i have heard of this cocktail, and have actually made it. (only once!) i will definitely be making it again after seeing this video! thank you anders!
Love it. Cheers!
I was born and raised in the Bay Area, but my parents were from Wyoming and Wisconsin, so we'd have Tom and Jerrys at Christmastime, with only a whisper of rum in my cup. I have to try this with the rum and cognac now!
Midwest bars and taverns often displayed a large Tom & Jerry vessel on the back bar so customers knew it was being served. Classic, simple, old school advertising for a lovely winter-warmer. Thanks, Anders.
Absolutely. Cheers, Edward!
Looks like a great Holidays cocktail.
Wow. Great stuff. Made this on christmas eve and i'm blown away. Coming from Belgium, we don't have this fluffy creamy eggnog tradition stuff here. So i'm gonna spread the joy and introduce it here. Amazing! (Also very good with hot water, keeps it light because it's already heavy on it's own.)
Thanks for giving it a try! Happy you liked it. Merry Christmas!
I added a bit of flour to the leftover batter and made a crêpe out of it. Beautiful!
Hey Anders. Love your channel. Had an old fashioned at Bond 45 in NYC that was the best in my life. It had a bergamot tea infused simple syrup, chocolate bitters, and used Woodford.
I’ve tried making my own simple recreation that failed miserably.
Would love a video on your method, so I stop wasting bourbon, sugar, and Earl Grey tea.
This is a family staple, my parents make a 12 egg batter and freeze it. Once frozen it scoops into the cup nicely. My brother found some T&J mugs at a pawn shop in LA a few years back. Now my parents can drink it fancy style!
Here in central Wisc this is a must have drink for the holidays...thanks for the recipe Anders!
Absolutely. Cheers!
I actually have Tom & Jerry’s Snowbody Loves Me playing in the background 😂 I definitely have to try this warm delight in a cup w/ my next episode of T&J ☕️📺 You’re the best, Anders, BIG thanks! 🙏🏽 Happy Holidays🎄
Anders: “Does it warm your soul? Do you have a soul?”
Me: 😅
That is incredibly similar to homemade eggnog, but it’s warm and less rich. I look forward to trying it!
We have Christmas in mid summer so I'm going to save this one for winter
Longtime viewer, just dropping a line saying that I really enjoy your videos! Happy Holidays.
Thank G💜d I made this batch 10 min before the power went out in Nashville. -3 degrees post winter storm ❄️.
Loved the video! Great new Apron! Hope to see you again before the New year!
Cheers Chris! Hope you're enjoying the holidays!
My parents used to make Tom & Jerrys when I was a kid, but I never tried them. They'd buy batter from the grocery store, and I can't find any out here, so I tried this recipe. And can I just say? This is 1000% better than eggnog. Hands-down best holiday cocktail. I'm going to make these every year. Thank you for the amazing recipe!
My parents and their friends talked about this drink. I’ve never seen it made nor even have tasted it. But I will give it a try. Thanks for the recipe.
Enjoy it. Cheers!
