- DIY rejuvenation of that tired or weak WaterPik WP-360. The problem may be either lubrication or the batteries. Watch this video to see how to fix your problem.
Thank you soooooooo much John. You're the only one that showed and explained this model well, (mine was the one on the left). You saved me from buying a new one which costs a little fortune here in the Middle East as taxes are extremely high on imported stuff. I was so fed up with mine being so heavy and slow and I literally had to shake it in order for it to start but only to a speed of a snail. So I did all what you said and I even took it a couple of steps further. I was enjoying so much cleaning all the gluey gunk so I dismantled the large gear from the tiny gear of the motor and cleaned both and lubricated them anew. I made sure I memorized what goes where as it was getting pretty detailed inside. I don't have any non-toxic lubricator and figured petroleum jelly would be too sticky, so I used some coconut oil which is the thinnest oil I have so as not to make the motor drag. As for all the plastic parts, I took them all apart (I mean ALL) and washed them super clean with hot water and soap, scrubbing them with an old toothbrush and dried them out with a fan to ensure nothing is wet as all this story should be dry of course. Then, I reassembled everything. I have to admit I did one silly booboo and that's putting the black rubber seal that goes around the large gear upside down which made it not turn on. I was saddened after all this cleaning to have ruined everything. But then I investigated what I have done wrong and figured all was correct except maybe I should turn this sealer upside down and it worked like a charm. Really, it works and sounds like new. Great video John. I just put coconut oil on my pump like you showed and it works better now. I cook with coconut and avocado oil so I decided to go with the coconut oil. worked like a charm. Oh, and I used a butter knife at the top of the waterpik to loosen the two parts. I also put on my dish gloves to help me hold onto the waterpik. really help keep it from sliding around.

I discovered some tips while lubricating:
1. Some people report success with coconut oil. If you boil 1 tsp of shredded coconut in 1/4 cup of water, the oil rises to the surface.
2. The piston is joined to its connecting rod in a ball-and-socket joint. This joint too must be lubricated. (Terminology is from Wikipedia, "Connecting Rod".)
The piston on my Waterpik was quite stiff, as though the old grease had hardened - I don't know how it kept going.

I found your video by trying to find a demonstration on how to assemble the main charge unit to the water chamber. I was so afraid I was going to break it by forcing it. I was able to connect them as I was watching your video. I have been using the bigger WaterPic but my bathroom is small so I bought this small unit so It won't take up so much room. Thank you for your instruction on lubing the gears. I paid only $39.99 for mine at Walmart. I will probably just go buy another one if it gets slow (hopefully it stays good for quite some time). What I did learn from you was the Lube safety notice. Thank you for putting this video on-line. Holly

Thank you for an excellent video on how to take it apart without breaking anything. The problem with mine was that the negative battery tab weld had broken off from that battery. Used a tab of solder along with a replacement wire and working as good as new now!
Thanks for the tip on how to get the pic out of the water pic. It was a gift 3-4 years ago and I never used it up until about 6 months ago. The water pic fell on the floor and broke the pic off in the unit. You saved me from getting a new one which I don't like because they are too powerful. Anyway I just wanted to thank you for the instruction on removing the tip. Thank you!!
Thanks. I wouldn't have been able to figure that out by myself. It's working good now with a little lube. We'll see how it works over the next few days.
Very clear and informative - thank you. My unit just froze up, so I tore it apart and checked the battery voltage (all good), and cleaned and lubed the pump assembly (it wasn't bad), and tried the white unit before pushing it back into the blue storage piece - all good, ran fast. Put it all back together, went to the bathroom, attached the nozzle, filled it with water, pushed the button.... and nothing. Locked up. Hmmmmm... could the nozzle be plugged???? Pulled out the nozzle, blew (or tried) to blow though it - no air came through. So, the actual problem was a plugged nozzle. Cleared it out with a needle, and presto! Worked like new. FYI.
Thank you! My issue turned out to be the simplest...a clogged tip. However, your video taught me how to take the unit apart, clean it thoroughly and put it back to together.

Thanks for the great advice !! I was debating on changing the batteries or buying a new one. I have a newer model that required a little more effort to get in apart. But after cleaning and lubing it as shown in your video the power increased immensely.

Thank you John. I took mine apart and found a tiny leak which rusted the motor completely until it failed to turn. Wished I had inspected and oiled/lubed it and noticed the leak earlier.
Good instructions for taking this model apart. The on/off switch on my unit was the issue, as a good contact wasn't being made. I needed to take the two tiny phillips head screws off that hold the switch in place, and thoroughly clean the contacts. Now works, with more power too, now that there isn't a voltage drop across the switch.
You are awesome that I've had a broken water pic for like 3 weeks and the only other video I could find said just get screwed pliers and pull the tip of apparently that wasn't the case there was a button thank you so much you just saved my whole unit

You have to open the flap of the water container and that pushes the white part out. It comes in the instruction Manuel. It is easier that trying to take them apart with force and risk breaking it... 😃 but thank you for taking the time to help us with this video
I did not know that when I made the video. Another viewer let me know about it, and you are correct, opening the flap all the way to pry the pieces apart is the easy and safest way! Thanks for your input!

Mine lost power suddenly, this video helped a lot disassembling the device. Lubing the pump, moving parts, and gears didn't fix it though. When the issue started noticed that along with the water bubbles showed on the tip, which lead me to think air was getting into the system somewhere along the way. After some minutes of troubleshooting noticed the rubber grommet at the very bottom where the tank meets the inlet pipe shifted or something. Instead of being at the inlet tiny pipe it should go on the tank where the check ball is at and a flat side of the grommet to the matching side as well. Put it back together and now it works like before with good pressure.

Thank you John - excellent video; restored my non-working WP360 to usable status, did not have to change battery. Unit does not run as strongly as it did new, so next time I will probably change battery. Also - when I tore unit apart it was gross and slimy inside, so we probably need to open them up every six months if for no other reason to clean them up. I chose to use petroleum jelly as my lube on the pump plunger and gears. Thanks again.

For me it was full of hard water residue inside, following this I could clean and relubricate the motor thank you!
Thank you. Excellent video. I wasn't able to find that exact Lubricant, so I used toothpaste. Seems to work so far. Hint. In order to separate the white functioning part from the Blue base, use a medium - wide screwdriver (in between them), then gently twist.
I had a heck of a time trying to figure out how to connect these two parts when I took it all out of the box. The instructions don't show you how. That's why I had to get on UA-cam to find someone who would show me how to do it. Thanks for your advice about disconnecting it. I'm sure I'll need to pull them apart for cleaning in the future after I have used it for a awhile.
I made a stupid mistake by stepping on the tip on the 360 water pick.It broke half of the tip .the rest was stuck.Another problem was that the button would not stay on unless I kept my finger on it. Following your instruction to take it off,I discovered that they improved on the batteries .they are now two AA batteries in green wrap.If i had to replace it It would only required a minimum of soldering.I was able to take the rest of the bottom of the pik out .I discovered that the metal on the on and off bottom vibrated off the base,so I was able to put i back on right and now it stays on unless I turn it off.Although the policie was not up yet I could have had it replace,but ,I'm impatient.

I should’ve watched this video sooner 😭. I might’ve been able to fix my waterpik. It had mold on the power button, which I probably could’ve easily cleaned them off. But oh well! Got myself a new flosser now. And I’m gonna take very good care of it this time. Learned my lesson 😢😭🤦🏼♀️

I know this video is old, but it's still relevant. All I had to do was remove the motor by unscrewing the two screws. Remove and cleaned the large o-ring under the gears. Some junk was on the paper towel. Put a light layer of sewing machine oil or olive oil on the o-ring under the gears. Place it back in and button everything up. I am a cheap "astard and didn't want to buy the food grade grease. Now I am good to go. 👍

I lubed the gears and it seems to be working but the "On" button won't stay on, so I have to apply pressure the whole time I use the waterpik, Thanks for the help John!
Tim, As I remember, the on/off switch is made of a thin piece of bent metal that gets flexed one way for ON, and another way for OFF. You might try removing the screws from the bottom of the waterpic and sliding out the entire "guts" again. I suspect that you might not have gotten the "guts" pushed all the way back in to the outer housing somehow. If that were to happen, the on/off switch might do exactly what you describe. It's worth a try! John
My Waterpik began doing this too. Turns out there's a breakage in one side of the spring metal, maybe due to metal fatigue or corrosion. Result: The switch is no longer bistable. Workaround: I do what you do: I just hold the power button the whole time.

The switch in mine wore out and now I have to squeeze it really hard. I have a WP-360. It is a shame too because the dentist seems to notice that it is working. Could it be bad batteries?
My Waterpik was like that too. Voltmeter says my battery pack is fine (2.70 volts). Turns out I just had to lubricate the pump. Fixed!

Hi i have the old version you show on the video, the one with the triangular input for charger. I lost the charger so I’m trying to find the appropriate cord, do you know which one fits in today available in Amazon?
I was too tired to watch your whole video but again because I've already watched it twice so I was wondering can you rejuvenate the battery it's just so lackluster it doesn't hardly work out very well as far as like pumping water out very well I don't I can't afford to replace it or the battery is there anything I could do? I can not get the reservoir off. Tried for 10 minutes.
"Gaming", Another viewer showed me a way to get the reservoir off very easily. He opened the lid to the reservoir and pushed it against the point where it stopped when it touched the top of the white part. It acts like a lever and pops the top of the reservoir loose. I hope it works for you.

YOU CAN USE SCREWDRIVER TO HELP SEPARATE AND TAKE APART.
What are the specs for the ac adapter for the older model? After stashing it away because it wouldn't charge/pump well (or, "I've forgotten what the problem was by now"), I pulled out the adapter from the cupboard waiting to be needed, except I didn't. It wasn't there.
Why doesn't everything that needs an adapter have the specs clearly & permanently marked on the device?

Kate, Sorry I didn't see your question sooner. The easily identifiable difference between my two Waterpics is the connector on the unit where the cord from the adapter plugs in. The older of the two has a ROUND hole that the plug goes into, and the newer unit has a funny diamond shaped hole with two gold pins visible in it. The ROUND hole unit is 3 Volts DC and 100ma. The diamond shaped hole unit is 3 Volts AC and 100ma . It sounds to me like you have the DC unit with the round hole. If I was trying to replace a lost DC adapter, I'd go to our local flea market where some vendors have boxes of adapters for calculators, phones, etc and sell them for $2 to $4 each. Find one that outputs 3 Volts DC. Once you find one, just make sure that the output is rated for at LEAST 100ma. That is the output current capability. You can use one that outputs 200, 500, or more as long as the voltage is 3 Volts DC. Chances are that the one you find will not have the correct connector on it (That's Murphy's law in action.). If you take your Waterpic to the flea market with you, you can go through the box of adapters to find one with a connector that fits the Waterpic. If the voltage and current are correct, you're in business, otherwise you'll need to buy two adapters, and cut the connector off one and splice it on the one with the correct ratings. In doing that, you need to make sure that the electrical polarity is correct. The center pin is (+) and the outside is (-). If you hook them up backward, the Waterpick will run in reverse.... Then just reverse the wires and tape up your splices real good. If you don't want to do all this, you can probably find universal adapters at Amazon.com... Just search on "power adapter 3VDC".

I have the model-WP-360 and it just stop work all together, won't turn on.Do you think it's the batteries? I don't want to spend $20 on batteries, when the who unit only cost $29.

Randy, my experience with petroleum jelly is that it thickens with age. You would be better finding a silicone based lube. You only need a glob on your finger tip to do the job. If you know someone with a pool or hot tub, ask them to give you a squirt of the lube they use for their “O” rings. Good luck. John

@@randyjustrandy9937 Randy, I never really answered your question. If you can’t get the silicone, go ahead and try some petroleum jelly. Don’t get it on too thick. If it doesn’t work, you can always clean it out and try something else.
Yes, I tried the petroleum jelly and it improved briefly, then slowed down even worse. I'll find some silicone lube and start over. But I'm happy to know the procedure works.

Stephen, The lube I'm using is somewhat of a "gooey" mixture. I use a toothpick to apply it, so you have to work to get too much. On the gears... I smear a coating all the way around the gear. you can be somewhat liberal here. Once you get some on the gears, move the gears around with your finger. Don't put some much on that you have globs flying around in there. On the piston... I don't want to get too much in here where the water flows, so I put a "dab" on the piston and smear it around with my finger to get a nice, but somewhat thin coat. Put a dab in the cylinder, insert the piston, and move it in and out and try to get the cylinder to have a nice thin coat too.

Ethan, my video shows me pulling the two pieces apart. Two other viewers advised me that the easy way to get the parts separated is to simply open the hinged door where you fill the unit with water... open the door all the way till it stops, then give it a little more pressure, and the halves will pop apart. One viewer still had the original instruction manual that came with the unit. He told me that his is the method in the manual. Good luck. John

I have the exact model as in your video - but I lost the charger many years ago. Any suggestions what I could use - my country has 220V electricity. A mobile phone charger was suggested but it didn't work. The model I have needs

Chris, I had a similar question about a year ago. Here is my answer.... The reason a mobile charger didn’t work was probably due to incorrect polarity of the plug or incorrect output voltage or current. The fact your country has 220V electricity shouldn’t be an issue because most Chargers available to you will be for 220V already.

Hey Sir my waterfloss hasn't been used for 2 years been put on a box. Last night i found it and charger it to 100%. But when i start it it wont work. Motor dead?
My guess is that motor or the pump piston is frozen. Open the unit up as shown in the video, and turn the big gear by hand to free it up. Then turn it on and see if it works. Don’t leave the switch on for a long time if the motor doesn’t turn. That could burn the motor windings up. I hope this works for you. If it doesn’t, check the batteries with a voltmeter. They may be dead despite your attempts to charge them.

No need for dental picks to apply lube on hard to reach areas. Just go to the drug store and buy a syringe, load the lube in the backend and apply with ease and accuracy.

Turtato , if you are having trouble removing the blue water reservoir, trying opening the lid and pushing it wide open. It will act as a pry to push the top of the blue part away from the white part. Once that is done you can lift it straight up. Hope this helps. John

where do you get batteries
Leonid, Try a Google search using the phrase "Sub-C NIMH battery with tabs". "Sub-C" is the size of the battery. It is slightly smaller than a standard C sized battery and will fit perfectly in the WaterPik housing where the old batteries were. These are sometimes referred to as type "SC" instead of "Sub-C". The "NIMH" refers to the chemistry of the battery. NIMH stands for Nickle Metal Hydride. NIMH batteries have a longer life than NICD (Nickle Cadmium) batteries. "With Tabs" means that you want batteries with metal tabs welded to them so that it will be easier to interconnect two in series by soldering the "tabs" together. The ones I purchased were 2500 mah capacity. The OLD batteries were only 1000 mah capacity, so there is no need to go crazy and pay a lot of money for super high capacity batteries. I hope this helps you.

wolvie45 - Look carefully at the tube. Mine was plainly labeled on the back. Make sure it says something like “USDA H-1 RATED”. This is a USDA specification that says that the lube is safe for use in food processing equipment. Any brand of Teflon lube with that statement that is made for lubrication or O’rings, gaskets, bearings etc should be fine. John
You should consider changing the title of your video... I watched the whole video with hopes of seeing the battery replaced but didnt. Thumbs down.
DO NOT DO THIS! Why? Because I did and it bearly works now. The Lube he suggests using is too thick and it places too much drag on the piston. I really wish people here would not comment on shit just because its a nice video.
