New Kilauea Eruption Reaches One Week, Lava Cascades Continue (Dec. 28, 2020)

  • Overnight, lava continued to cascade from the west vent, feeding the new lava-lake at the summit of Kilauea volcano. There have been no major changes in the week-long eruption or in the lava level. Hawaiian Volcano Observatory field crews measured the lava lake as 588 feet deep on Monday. Which is about the same as it was yesterday.
    A synthesized voice was utilized in the narration for this story. Video and photos are from the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

    What Im a little concerned about is that if it continues to fill over the next few weeks, it'll need to drain somewhere. From the 80s up intil the big May 2018 fissure eruption, there was always a path for the lava to drain to the ocean (which what attracted the most vistors and those epic lava entering ocean pics). As of right now, there is no "drain" so it will either overflow and/or create a new tube system underground leading to the ocean, and who knows where that'll be since the old tube system is filled/hardened up from the big 2018 eruption.

    • @hankakah4180
      @hankakah4180 3 роки тому +6

      No, the lava tube system will be easier to remelt than the hardened first outer covering. Lava will go along the path of the least resistance, just like water, so the ones flowing downhill will have the most pressure on it from above than those with a more lateral line of flow. See the lava island in the middle? It was combined by the old water lake, that lava is a different harder viscosity than the rest of the lava lake. Because it cannot be melted back into liquid rock it rises, and as you can see. With less lava coming into the pit, the areas farthest away from the fissures are cooling, and you can see the result is the island is growing higher and higher with successive layers of cooled lava around it's edges.

    Since 2018, this is the only channel I go for Kilauea's info, their info is on point, tells you everything you need to know, no BS, and it's not only informative, you can learn with it.
    So, the first vent is draining the lava, so the the lava lake won't really make it to the outer rim of the crater, I guess that is a good thing.

    During the 2017 Ironman Competition, I was nearly med-evac'd to Oahu from my home in Kona because of my body's immune response to Volcanic Oceanic Gas (VOG). VOG was so heavy that the mountain range looked like is was covered with cotton. Basically no healthcare on the Big Island. Everything is expensive, goods and resources are scarce, and most contractors and real estate agents are scam artists doing what it takes to survive in a place without industry save one: Hospitality. Property values dropped. Geologists predicted a resurgence of volcanic activity in the near future. We finally got our price and sold our property in Kona in Feb, 2020. The gas spewing fissure is back. The same affect is back. The same effects will prevail. It's not a good place to live. I feel for the locals.

If the lava is still flowing from the western vent, and the video shows a considerable flow, and the lava lake hasn't increased in depth or height for several days. Where is the extra lava flowing into the lake going? The flow of lava would suggest the volume in the lake is increasing hence the depth and height would continue to change.

That is how they also measured the depth of the acidic water lake that had formed inside of Hale'ma'uma'u months after the 2018 eruption and collapse of the crater as well.

    Lava is going in..... but the lava lake isn't rising? That's like adding water to a bath tub and the water's not rising. Heard it was draining earlier. Sounds like it's still draining somewhere to maintain a consistent level.

    One question: how is it possible that amount of lava is pouring in the caldera each day....but the level of the lava lake of the caldera remains always the same...??? Either they are not doing proper measurements or the same amount of lava that comes out of the vent is draining somewhere else. And if so, where...?
