Featuring the uber-talented @LEMMiNO! Ok guys, this is my first time experimenting with an end-roll sponsorship message, which helped make this video possible. The sponsor is Ground News -- go to ground.news/melodysheep to see through misleading media narratives and find common ground. Sign up through my link to get 40% off unlimited access this month. I'm exploring hiring more artists to increase my creative output and support more independent creatives -- a sponsorship like this helps make it possible; let me know how this integration feels.
This idea was originally going to be a sequence inside of THE HUMAN FUTURE, but the concept was too interesting to shoehorn into a larger video. I hope you all enjoy the ride. I'm cooking up some big stuff for 2024 -- stay tuned :)

I think that in the event a real doomsday scenario ever arises, and we are actually placed on the brink of extinction, then we will work together whether we like it or not. Sure, there will probably be some bad apples in the group who will refuse, but as a collective, humans are capable of unbelievable things. In a situation where everyone's lives are on the line and nobody is safe anymore, the necessity to work together will be the only way to survive, and I'm pretty certain people would put aside their differences for that, even if it took the end of the world to happen.

Unfortunately, a lot of people don't even take the latter threat seriously, despite the fact that multiple eminent AI researchers have been repeatedly warning about its dangers (Geoffrey Hinton, Yoshua Bengio, Stuart Russel) and even logically it would follow that creating a set of beings that radically different from us not only in its thinking, but in powers and intellect might present grave danger to our species. *Being the second smartest species on Earth might not be that safe.*

@@ninab.4540I’ve always thought about that. Is racism or hatred (shit, even the entire concept of hatred) toward the same species due to physical/mental differences or greed something that only humans inhibit ? Or is it something inevitable with intelligence life forms. I guess animals portray something like it when it comes to pack behavior/being hostile towards same species not of their pack, but you can also just say it’s natural selection/battle of the fittest.
would it be possible for any intelligent life form to be able to completely work together while having a freedom of chose/not being a hive mind? I would think they would be conflict of interest, but would it be to the extent that humans have taken it? Not even countries, let alone states or counties, can work together to be on the same page really, as conflict of interest seems everywhere. It’s hard to fathom another species as large and smart (possibly even smarter) than the human race all work toward one unified goal.
Typing this out made me even start thinking about emotions. Is it unique to humans? Can you love something or be happy if you don’t know what happens if something isn’t loved or don’t know what it feels to not be happy? I’m so fucking high

@@MatthewTheWanderer what no? That is not an objective fact. In order to make those crazy mental gymnastics, you literally have to ignore what I just told you, which by the way is an objective fact. By the time the video was uploaded it was February in some parts of the world.
You can't rightly state it was uploaded January 31st without specifying the place as time is relative.
Furthermore it doesn't even matter that the creator uploaded it the 31st at their time zone, because the comment would not be in the perspective to the creator, but the commenter.
To give a great example. American TV shows releasing Sunday evenings are released Monday nights in Europe and are even advertised as such. It isn't because Americans gets it first, it is simply a matter of perspective. There isn't any objective release date, the official one would be in regard to the country of origin.
It was a little naive to assume the self centered stance in the first place, but it is outright stupid to double down on it afterwards, when it clearly isn't a objective question.

  • @ThePalaeontologist
    @ThePalaeontologist 2 місяці тому +384

As a palaeontologist, the scale of the horror and loss of _that day_ at the K-Pg Boundary, as you correctly stated, the worst day of all time for life on Earth, is one of those especially moving and saddening things in palaeontology (and make no mistake, it has a _lot_ of competition in the history of life on Earth, whether on the smaller or the larger scale) There were nightmares beyond nightmares or the worst monsters in fiction, wrought that dreadful day. It is almost too enormous to come to terms with. Even with all my palaeontological training, even with my lifelong passion for prehistory and the natural world. The sheer ultra-violence and terror of _that day_ just brings me to stillness, quietness and lamentation.
We wouldn't even exist without it having happened, yet part of feels this personal bond to that time. My favourite things in all the world - non-Avian Dinosaurs - amongst the ~3/4 of animal groups wiped out in the space of a variably short time (it is debated) The utter scale of the power unleashed, the unfathomable depths of suffering so many innocent animals faced. The confusion, the disorientation, the physical and cerebral onslaught. Even the survivors could be called the 'unlucky ones'.
How, one must ask, does an animal fare when trapped in the dark, while starved and isolated? How much sentient suffering was going on worldwide, for hours, days, weeks, months and indeed, years? Comprehending the actual meaning of the K-Pg is one of the most profoundly unsettling and upsetting things anyone can do, and even (or perhaps, _especially_ should I say) as a palaeontologist, it is still most difficult to put into the right words to convey it's meaning, while doing any justice to it whatsoever.
It was not just one causal factor, one side-effect, one of the immediate impact phenomena or the secondary disasters and tertiary disasters it unleashed. It was this cascade of death which would not stop, not let up and only end with the deaths of most living things on Earth. Even the surviving families and orders were ravaged to a point of near-extinction (some, were less depleted than all that, though mostly with massive population densities like various Arthropods and Insects; though of course, uncountable quantities, into the quintillions or more of invertebrates must have been obliterated along with the millions and billions of Vertebrate animals) A lot of folks just don't, 'get it'.
When I glimpse at the K-Pg I see the worst day of all time. However, it's much more than that. I have an understanding of the subject, enough to see it in a level of clarity; clarity, which only brings more sadness when you stop and think about particular aspects. Sobering and horrible little moments of realisation, from understanding exactly what kind of trauma particular herding animals might face post-impact, to the miserable fates of the giant Pterosaurs caught in those devastating impact winds. Their graceful bodies, their impressive yet lightweight wings, mangled in the maelstrom.
For many animals, it would have been a quick death. For plenty of others, it would have been a nightmarish and drawn out affair, potentially lasting months or even years. The scavengers had it good while the death biomass carpeted the ground. But after a point, they too ran out of options and began to tear each other apart, all under the ashen veil and shroud of darkness overhead. I can imagine a million and one ways in which so many specific animals may have been suffering. A million million calamities, cascading in slow-motion. And nothing and nobody to save those poor creatures. The sheer indifference and severity of nature, played out as harshly as it ever has been.
When it comes to the K-Pg, and _that day_ in particular, it really depends on how much 'resolution' and focus I want to put into looking into it, on whether or not it will move me to the point of solemn tears. It may seem a strange thing for a hairy primate 66 million years after the fact to lament such a thing in such a manner. Though if you have loved this subject as much as I have, the poignancy and savagery of _that day_ can only bring you to silence and reflection. If people want to be crass about it they can make their Arnie 'ICE AGE' jokes (Batman) and laugh it off as some remote and long-ago thing we don't need to concern ourselves with. But I'm a palaeontologist. I have my eye on Deep Time and millions of years bygone, all the time. And let me tell you; there was no day worse than that which heralded the end of the Mesozoic Era.
And I'm well-aware that overall, the end-Permian Mass Extinction (which killed off ~90% of life on Earth around ~251.9 Ma) was the biggest Mass Extinction ever. But it took place over at least 60,000 years (and had been thought to have transpired over 300,000 years in older sources) The thing is, though, that no other day could have been worse than the day the Chicxulub Impactor struck the Yucatan Peninsula. No other moment in Earth's history, was so destructive and ruinous. Sure, in terms of sheer energy release, the collision of Old Earth and Theia over 4.4 Ga would have been much more vigorous and powerful than any meteorite or asteroid impact (literally, two planets crashing together, to make a new and bigger one; plus our Moon, Luna) But all the same; nothing lived back then. It happened all in a lifeless, hellish world. It's not the same as a planet populated with remarkable animals, being turned into ashes and charred bones, after living on Earth for 167 million years at least (and probably over 170 million years; and ruling it for at least 140-150 million years)
It's not the same as the most magnificent dynasty of Vertebrates _ever_ to exist, being driven to mass extinction, by the most cataclysmic day life on Earth ever witnessed. There is so much of a 'surface area' to it that it starts to boggle the mind and become quite upsetting. When you break it down to it's component elements and see it for what it truly was, it's not just the end of an era or the breaking of a venerable dynasty, it is the unmaking of the paradigmatic poetry of how life flowed in that era. It is the reforging of the evolution of life on Earth, following new rules and under new management. It is the purging of an entire way the world had once been. And it is very sad.
The more you know about it, the sadder it gets. And so, in passing, I can glance over it, but if I delve into the deep ocean of suffering that it entails, then I find myself lost in thoughts of starving animals, bleak herd collapses and the behavioural irregularities of once thriving species, disoriented and whimpering in the dark. And that makes me wonder how humanity would fare. It was a 1 in 100 million year event, statistically speaking. According to planetary geologists and physicists. But it is still a dreadful thing to have to pick through. It's just nature at it's most cruel.

at 7:30 its stated that mushrooms would be ideal because they can grow in low light. that's not the issue. it will be plenty bright for plants after an asteroid strike, there's only so much dust that the atmosphere can hold, it would be darker for sure and that will make things cold, but it would be more like a what its like when there is a wildfire nearby, hazy with a reddish cast to the light especially at sunset/rise but It never got dark enough that photosynthesis couldn't happen so long as the plants were kept warm.

Mushrooms have nutritional benefits, but not a lot of calories, very few carbs (it’s why they’re hard to ferment). They would be a short term solution or supplement.

oh totally mushrooms are awesome! its just that they suffer from cold like a plant would so growing them in the open isn't an option and if it was you could also grow plants.@@Minotaur-ey2lg

I got across your channel for the first time and by watching the efforts, animations, and visualization I'm just stunned. Felt like I was watching a 200M$ budget film or something. You gained a sub. Good work

The Human Future and this one were too heavenly for my small Mobile screen. The visuals, soundtrack, and the voice artists were just extraordinary. I'm in awe what I've just experienced. Your videos definitely deserves a theatre.❤

I never thought I'd ever feel such a powerful and special connection to mushrooms and algae until now. Melodysheep, you are a national treasure for real, and not just an actor in a movie with the same name.

i would have some major concerns over most/any shelters surviving the long duration mag-9 to 11 earthquakes and the many strong aftershocks that followed. i also don't think i would invest in a shelter in New Zeeland, being on the ring of fire with all the plate boundaries going nuts in the earthquakes and most likely busting volcanoes into an active stage, it just doesn't make much sense to me.

So much faith and optimism in humanity to be functional enough to go through such a major event and to regrow our environment without destroying it even more.
We can only dream that humanity will become an actual civilization in order to achieve such a thing.
    A beautiful video, nonetheless.

I feel so lucky that UA-cam recommended your "Timelapse of entire universe" and I was just blown away by your craft. There aren't many people here because only few knows what is pure gold and what is just shiny yellow thingy. Thanks fellow human.
