    While you do timing belt replace the water pump too.

      Very true. It's a 8+hr job so might as well do it all and not have to worry about it for 100k miles, though the water pump is rarely the thing that fails first in that area. I did belt, tensioner, and pump all at once on this one.

      I have heard to do the rear main sump seal and both cam seals as well while it's all open.

      @@chaseketterling6936 I changed the timing belt and water pump on pt cruiser last fall. Dealerships get $1800 for just the timing belt. It is a 10 hour job.

    It has more than just a turbo put into it. There are 11 different upgrades that this engine and suspension has that are different from a non turbo

    Apr 11, 2019 picking up my 2002 PTCruiser Limited from my Dealership tomorrow had to replace the PCM and aTiming Belt & water-pump kit, plus new plugs after about 55,000 miles. Timing belt is missing 6 teeth, its costing me $1500+ so your prices are right on and your right it takes lots of time to replace it. Hoping this fixes it for a long time into the future. Love the car but not the cost of the repairs, also have had the front end ball joints assembly replaced twice so far.

    i like how you can usually get these with a cracked windshield 90k miles still running for $2500-$3000

      Should be getting non turbo for $US500 in the USA. Here in Australia I can get the right hand drive non turbo at 90k-150k miles for about US$1500. Cars are FAR more expensive here but that's dirt cheap for ANY car over here.

      I see them go for sale at $2k USD for one with 90k miles, no issues. Here in Idaho, USA.

    4:24 Sorry, no. While the turbos and N/A engines have a four cylinder engine of similar 2.4 L displacement, these two are not quite the same at all. The turbos use an aluminum block and the cylinder heads and connecting rods are different too so it's not a simple as "just add a turbo". In any case, I got 115,000 miles out of my '04 GT Cruiser with a 5-speed and the issue that got it off the road (and on to another owner who dutifully repaired it) was 1) the intermediate shaft where it joins with the right-side axle is a splined connection and that simply wore right down to a smooth shaft and thus could not transmit power, and 2) the engine developed a persistent misfire in cylinder No 1 for an unknown cause. The ignition system was in top shape and so were all the fuel injectors so perhaps it was due to a leaking exhaust valve. After some time scouring all the wrecking yards across the continent, he found a replacement intermediate shaft for a GT-5-speed and replaced the clutch at the same time. The original Sachs clutch still had some life left in it but he decided to replace it anyway (was an 18 hour job). Rear bumper rebars also tend to rust out.

      Sure, the internals are stronger and it's lower compression but the point is everything bolts on the same way and maintaining the auxiliaries that aren't turbo specific (turbo oil and coolant lines, manifold) is the same. Timing belt is a PIA on both, same service interval, same engine mounts, and same lack of space. After making the video, mine had an intermittent misfire that came down to a $30 set of plug wires. The axle spline issue sounds like a bad heat treat/supplier mistake. I haven't heard of that happening frequently on any of the forums, even with cars at much higher mileage.

      @@chaseketterling6936 Agreed. The new owner said that the o-ring lost its seal letting the dirt in that just helped to grind it up. I actually owned two PT Cruisers until September; the '04 turbo and an '01 Ltd Edition 5-speed. I still drive the '01 and intend to continue as long as possible. That modular clutch seems to be a weak point. I replaced the timing belt this summer and that job really sucked - it was harder than it needed to be.

    I just bought a 2010 Couture with 72000 miles for $6000 near perfect. One chrome plated 16" rim has a dent so looking for one, Did a lot of research, Much better than the HHR. I wanted a car with unique style added to my stable of cars, hard to find a turbo like yours... would not buy one with over 100,000 mile. It will take me 3 or 4 year to reach those miles.

      Who wouldn't want a turbo, stick shift hot hatch with removable rear seats for less than $3k?

    • @OffGridInvestor
      @OffGridInvestor 5 років тому +1

      They are VERY cheap. I see them here in Australia in right hand drive for peanuts. And from my perspective, with the removable rear seats and flat folding front passenger seat, I don't think it would be impossible to make them a highly efficient campervan. I was stunned hearing people getting the mileage they get from a well maintained and tuned PT cruiser. Better than my hyundai trajet van (now a campervan).
