I think with having had both of these tyres on my i30N 2k18 i can honestly say the Michelin PS4S makes the car way calmer and absorbs the road better than the Pirellis...So your stiffness test is down to that mostly i think.
They have access to a rear-wheel drive platform in the G70/Stinger. Wish Hyundai would take that setup and make an N car out of it. It'd be cool to have like a Sonata-sized, RWD N sportback.
Front drive lose 10% of enginr power to the wheel. Rear drive 15% all wheel 20% so if the tire can hold the grip, front wheel is the most efective way to use power for speed. It means if cars have same engine power front drive car will be the fastest one.
@@youngmoon8762Not entirely true. The biggest problem with FWD is traction. When you're doing fast acceleration the forces applied pushes down on the rear wheels and lifts up the front. So FWD cars are losing traction while RWD cars are gaining traction under high load. RWD cars also tend to have much better balance. RWD cars can also exit corners faster. That's why rear-mid engine cars are the most ideal. Minimal drivetrain loss, engine weight in the rear, and great balance. A shame no one can build one that's affordable anymore.

KIA did used to pull that crap with the Forte SX, saying it had some specialized suspension, but if you do a search for parts, all the #'s are identical with the base model.
It does! They didn’t want to sacrifice the practicality of the Kona N by lowering it and it being unusable as an SUV. They knew the customer base in the market for a Kona do SUV things lol. Like go camping and off-road every now and then, things like that. Which is why some people buy SUV’s. They did not want to lose that aspect of the vehicle but made it overall more Fun!! Plus it looks cool lol
The Kona N just looks like a blast to drive, it's compact, good ground clearance, seems agile, sounds nice and since I have a 2012 s/c Mustang GT, The Kona N would be something different.
I honestly think the Veloster is the better choice. All they need to do is give all the technology and features from the Elantra N (such as the gauge cluster, huge infotainment screen), and it'll be a great buy.
Literally test drove both of these cars today, prior to even seeing that this video was being released. Our take (prior to watching the video): The Elantra N is a better car in almost all ways. It is more spacious on the interior, feels nicer to drive, has more comfortable seats, and seems to put down the power better. The Kona N sort of wins in "utility" but that's only really ground clearance and the off chance you wish to drop the rear seats to fit something bigish in the upright hatch. Otherwise, the Elantra N easily takes the win. To put it into perspective, we own a Focus RS. The Elantra N surprisingly close to the RS. The N makes better exhaust noises, is still plenty quick and handles extremely well for a FWD, has more comfortable seats, has more room in general, and has newer tech. The RS makes better intake noises - including turbo noises, is sharper handling, faster, and uses rear biased AWD for really fun power delivery. We loved each to death and wish the dealers weren't playing the shenanigans they are. The Kona N was about $9k over listed MSRP and the Elantra N was $11k over MSRP (both USD). It's a damn shame. If it was even slightly near MSRP we'd likely jump at the Elantra N. For reference, I was offered any 3-series BMW for $2500 over MSRP (including the M3). Now, I realize the design is a bit polarizing so maybe that's affecting their value, but still...if the dealer markup on an M3 is that "low", the Hyundai offerings shouldn't be any worse.
I just got a KONA N--I owned a 2020 AWD Stinger GT 3.3TT and like the Kona better.I like sitting up higher--you need to realize hyundai paint is weak and the low sitting cars can have the door sills and skirts getting scuffed up easier. Also the elantras lower profile tires also means the rims can get scuffed up easier--on the slow mo at the start of this--i cringed watching the elantra going over the corner markers--I bet the elantras rims were scuffed up and unless they made a mistake the konas were not.
I basically got my KONA for 35k flat--but my trade in--a 2021 CX-30 Turbo that I owned--only left me with paying 1k out the door for taxes.I now own a KONA N and after all is said and done--I pocketed 10k.
This platform is absolutely nuts. I just managed to get myself a 2022 Veloster N, Performance blue, Manual. Had 11K miles. I've had it for 3 days and I am so shocked how well it performs and how good the stock exhaust is. SO FAR, I feel it's the most perfect hot hatch...
I have owned the Elantra N since Dec. Of 2021. I have never owned a car that makes me smile every time I get in until now. Love this thing. Thanks for the comparison. Love these reviews.
VN Owner here, All 3 are great cars. Just perfer the smaller hot hatch VN but no doubt would get the Elantra if the VN didnt exist. Just not a Sedan person.
Its a good time to be working at a hyundai dealership! The cars sell themselves! It me up if you want to take one on a test drive and if your from Alberta, canada bound!
Absolutely live my Kona N. No one has any idea how fast it is and a resonator delete is amazing on these. I did a very crazy road rally with high speed cornering last week and was very impressed. The PZero tires I definitely need to upgrade and probably a wider tire or spacers for a wider wheel base and it'll be golden. Most likely will lower 1-2" as well to take some of the high body roll away.
AWD on the Kona is a $1,500 option and the the diff in the 1.6T can handle 800 ftlbs torque from the diff manufacture. So all it would cost more should be no more $2,000. They have all the hardware to do it.
To anyone thinking about buying *any* high performance FWD car - get a solid rear motor mount. My veloster N doesn't wheel hop at all after installing one. the elantra won't either.
I ordered i30n with dct. I was a manual fan a year or two ago. But you just cannot beat the percision and performance of the wet dct. And on the plus side, you have a lot less chance (if any) to ruin your synchros, which then makes driving a pain instead of a pleasure.
I was considering a Subaru Crosstrek but now I’m considering a Kona N. The reason I was thinking of the Crosstrek was because the all wheel drive but I live in Florida and really don’t need all wheel drive. Hyundai has a much better warranty then the Subaru.
As much as I hate to admit it...I'd buy the Kona between the two. Just strikes me a better compromise when it comes to everyday vehicles. I'd likely go Veloster N or something else for more performance. For utility, the Kona, while compromised is still has a more flexible cargo area then the Elantra.
@@mharro88 Kona in is smaller technically but the space is more dynamic and useful due to no bracing, taller storage area and split fold. FWD is fine as these are designed for spirited street use more than anything else. To be clear I think both are close and great cars but if I wanted more utility or more sport, I would not choose either.
Okay but the i30N Fastback would make me sell my Veloster N because those body lines and styling are absolutely delightful. It's my "I wish we had X car from Europe" model

So it sounds like the Kona is a better option for the average person who can't afford multiple vehicles and or track access. The real scenario I'm not hearing the viewers bring up they make it sound like a soccer mom alternative, is it the corner inn it's for the average person stuck in traffic all week that gets a stretch of road here or there to enjoy. The other scenario that I'm not hearing reviews bring up is that the Kona in is for urban dwellers who want a GTI but don't want to crash the oil pan and are tired of living the low life, the average car owner who buys a home or visits homes with driveways with steep inclines, or the owner who goes on small road trips and ends up in parking lots with questionable speed bump height. Overall he's a two great cars I myself prefer a smaller hatchback and the kona is right around the size of a GTI I think it's slightly wider.
As a hot hatch owner (Renault Clio RS Trophy), I had to akwardly ask 2 of my passangers to exit the car so I could make the incline, w/o bottoming out :(
i have a 21 kona ltd (not n because it needs to be a family vehicle not a fun vehicle, sadly) but when i pull up beside someone in a sports car and make that eye contact that means we're gonna race away when the light turns green, i put it in sport mode and keep up with or beat them frequently, which is great fun. so much for it not being the fun car! :P very cool to see how the n options perform.

In Portugal almost any man love kona 😂
The Kona n actually isn’t lower compared to the regular Kona
I own a Sonic Blue Kona N and I absolutely love the thing. I traded my SEL Elantra for it...didn't wanna go from a SEL elantra to a N elantra but the Kona N is a phenomenal car and in eco I've gotten 31mpg&when in N mode it's a whole different car 😍💙
I was thinking of going Elantra N from a SEL
@@Letitdiebryan I don't think you could go wrong with that choice! Putting it into N is so much fun and it's great when you pull up to people who have no idea what you're driving and its burpling and popping 😁
I owned three Hyundai products and will never buy another. The 2004 Santa Fe was flawless but the 2010 was a total lemon and the 2012 Elantra I decided to give them a second chance with started actively falling apart by 90,000 miles.
@@dark6c159 lmao Hyundai was a whole different company 10 years ago. Never seen any bad reviews on the Veloster N
I had a kona sel and now an elantra N. So it's the other way around
Have a 23 Elantra N performance blue with manual on preference order with my dealer. Can't wait love it.
Bought a 23 Kona N in black.. my god is this an amazing car. I've done a few runs in Mexico against a few STIs and won each time because of how Damn quick the DCT shifts
really debating on one of these two...
Elantra N: cooler seats, sunroof, but has brace in the trunk
Kona N: seat doesnt light up, no sunroof, but fits my daily driver needs or storage
Funny, I was just watching your channel YESTERDAY thinking to myself "I really wish they'd do a side-by-side review of the Kona N" (I'm considering a Hyundai N car but can't decide which one) so thanks for reading my mind I guess. Great content as always.
I have a N line and even though I don’t have a Kona N I’m truly still happy owning a Kona
I've been a subscriber for a while now and these 'earbud comps' are dope. Nobody else is doing it and yalls conv has character. Keep up the great work guys!!
Too many crackles and pops??? Never get tired of that!
Kona N design is really nice.
They actually did Not lower the Kona N at all.. it has the exact same ride height/ground clearance as the regular Kona
KIA did used to pull that crap with the Forte SX, saying it had some specialized suspension, but if you do a search for parts, all the #'s are identical with the base model.
Actually the regular Kona sits lower then the N 😅 someone measured them.
@@dnegel9546 does it really!?
@@Don-hw7ws yup. Is just the bodykit/lip makes it seem lower.
That Elantra just looks mean, love it!!
@@Daveyboy_RS3 🍻 You understand 👍
The Elantra N DCT would've won this
Title made me wait for "Im Thomas.. and im James!" then I realized what channel I was watching
This was a really great side-by-side review. Thank you for being one of the few car reviewers to actually know how to use the N Custom settings.
fuck ive owned the car for a month now and still be finding out weird cool stuff about it.
Holy crap I've never been so happy to see a budget performance car with a decent infotainment
Bruh…. This is exactly the review/mashup I was looking for. These guys are the best in the game.
The Kona N just looks like a blast to drive, it's compact, good ground clearance, seems agile, sounds nice and since I have a 2012 s/c Mustang GT, The Kona N would be something different.
So did u get the Kona n lol ?
Where do you live? Dealers in my area aren't charging close to that much
I basically got my KONA for 35k flat--but my trade in--a 2021 CX-30 Turbo that I owned--only left me with paying 1k out the door for taxes.I now own a KONA N and after all is said and done--I pocketed 10k.
About time! the N community has been waiting for an Elantra N review from you blokes
Right on!
VN Owner here, All 3 are great cars. Just perfer the smaller hot hatch VN but no doubt would get the Elantra if the VN didnt exist. Just not a Sedan person.
I see N and click immediately!
Nobody gonna talk about the "Schifty Five" reference from Jacob when going over the train tracks? That was an ebaumsworld classic. "My i.q. is 55"
What you do today shplien
Aye just snagged a Kona N last night. Love it so far!
How is it?
Its a good time to be working at a hyundai dealership! The cars sell themselves! It me up if you want to take one on a test drive and if your from Alberta, canada bound!
Absolutely live my Kona N. No one has any idea how fast it is and a resonator delete is amazing on these. I did a very crazy road rally with high speed cornering last week and was very impressed. The PZero tires I definitely need to upgrade and probably a wider tire or spacers for a wider wheel base and it'll be golden. Most likely will lower 1-2" as well to take some of the high body roll away.
Great review! I would take the Kona N over the Elantra N mainly because I think it looks better.
It definitely does. I also think the Veloster N looks better than it as well.
Great job as usual fellas. And I very much appreciate the Schfifty Five reference.
I have the DCT Elantra N. So glad I went with that over the M/T. Incredibly fun car!
I was a manual guy till I touch DCT. Now I’m more of a DCT guy over manual
Kona is smaller and is only FWD.. where's the extra more utility?
@@mharro88 Kona in is smaller technically but the space is more dynamic and useful due to no bracing, taller storage area and split fold. FWD is fine as these are designed for spirited street use more than anything else.
To be clear I think both are close and great cars but if I wanted more utility or more sport, I would not choose either.
As a couple who owns both a Veloster 22DCT and a 23 kona N we love them both and go for runs together all the time 😊
Okay but the i30N Fastback would make me sell my Veloster N because those body lines and styling are absolutely delightful. It's my "I wish we had X car from Europe" model
Imagine what these would do with some parts from The Racer's Edge
Don't tell Hector
I need Nawz. Better make it 2 of em.
I see the way you drive you got a heavy foot you’ll blow yourself to pieces
Sounds like the Elantra N with DCT would be the best choice??????
It's a beast. Better than the MT imo
Thank you for doing the Kona N justice, I love my girl!!
Sold my e92 m3 competition that was my daily driver for 5 years for the Elantra N in performance Blue. Cant wait for it to arrive!
Wtf.....
@@TML34 The e92 m3 was the best vehicle ive ever owned, aside from a gt3/4 ill take it over any Porsche or Ferrari as well, but its a terrible daily, running costs and gas totaled over 1000 a month alone. I currently have my X6M until my N arrives.
@@TML34 Also with the way the market is now i made a killing selling it, got 10 thousand more than I paid for it 5 years ago lol.
@@dylanb2142give us an update: what’s the verdict on the Elantra N vs the BMWs you’ve owned? More fun? Were your cars dct?
@@karmahunden M3 was manual, EN is a dct. The EN is the better handling vehicle of the 2, and the better daily. I mean i do miss kicking the rear end out and the sound of the v8 but i am happy with my decision still. And the EN is just way better in the canadian winters, still wouldn't mind a e92 again as a weekend car one day.
Can we get a stand alone review of the Elantra N phase?
If the Kona N were AWD, it would be a really tempting vehicle.
Got the Kona N because the rear seats go down and is more usable daily.
I'd love to see a Sonata N considering it already has an N-Line trim and the mid size sedan segment, despite the low volume of sales, has a huge void in terms of enthusiest options.
Hyundai have the Elantra N that is why they won't make a Sonata N.

They have lowering springs for the Kona N and it looks slick and like it should have been. A hot hatch.
Love the Chill channel.
The Elantra N sounds amazing
About to me damn lol been waiting for you all to review this Elantra for months
I wonder if in the future Tuners will be able to use the NGS button to overboost the car for more then just 10hp maybe something like 20/30 would be goood
Yeah, I really wish they would have boosted the hp to 300. 0-60 mid 4's would have been an incredible benchmark for Hyundai.
For downtown street parking, Kona N makes lots of sense.
Thanks for the review! Glad Yuri onboard with the Kona N existing lol
The launch control you didn’t have it set up correctly. Set rpm to 3500 then activate it push brake pedal down hard. And slam gas pedal down fast. Not slow.
Got the Kona N, 3.6k miles in 2 months. Got it over the Elantra N because of the hatchback, I'm strongly thinking that this car HP numbers is at the wheels. I love the thing, makes me smile so much, even more than my previous v6 mustang and my parents v12 aston! Not as good as the aston, but damn the Kona and Elantra sound amazing! These cars have really surprised me, I'm definitely keeping the Kona when I get a gt350 for a weekend car!
You're exactly right. The KN puts down around 285 HP to the wheels when put on a dyno! I have a KN also and I totally agree, super fun to drive.
This is the one of the video's i was wishing for. Finally I can make my decision to get witch one..
Great episode today guys! Although I drive a VW Jetta 2.5 I really dig the Elantra N and thanks for the Sirius XM link! Keep uP the good work!
Not in Toronto... But born in the late 80s with my Focus ST & Cottage in the Lincolnshire countryside.
As a hot hatch owner (Renault Clio RS Trophy), I had to akwardly ask 2 of my passangers to exit the car so I could make the incline, w/o bottoming out :(
I own a drum shop and always buy hot hatches. Kona N is way more practical and glad to own one.
Ok best intro for a long time. Wow. That was sick. No disrespect to other intros though.
i have a 21 kona ltd (not n because it needs to be a family vehicle not a fun vehicle, sadly) but when i pull up beside someone in a sports car and make that eye contact that means we're gonna race away when the light turns green, i put it in sport mode and keep up with or beat them frequently, which is great fun. so much for it not being the fun car! :P very cool to see how the n options perform.
Been waiting for this!
Yeeeees ! I’ve been waiting for you guys to review the Kona N !
Seems plausible that the DCT-equipped cars (NGS mode notwithstanding) make a bit more starch than the M/T version.
I wish Hyundai would bring the i30n to Canada 🇨🇦 I have the elantra gt n line and love it, can only imagine an actual N in that body style..hyundai take my money if you bring it!!
Very good review. I'd still get the M/t over the dct. Regardless of how faster and better features it has, I still like to control my car. Hopefully next year they decide to add the sunroof and give the US spec more features.
No idea why Canada gets the sunroof on the 6MT and we don't.
@@crazylegson2 that's mind boggling to me. The US seems to always receive the worse from car companies
I used to be a Hyundai Sales Person so I like all the Hyundais. N group is definitely top of my list with the Konas though. Might be biased though because I drive a 22 Kona NLine 😅
Did you guys have the cars octaned learned? The extra psi makes a difference.
These cars are given to us by Hyundai and filled with whatever the previous automotive journalist decided they can afford (87 octane most likely unless it specifies the minimum on the gas door)
@@TheStraightPipes if the psi reached 19psi during the test then the cars were octaned learned. If it didn’t go past 15/16 psi they weren’t running their best. It’s almost like a factory stage 1 tune.
Cannot WAIT to see what they do with these in the next year or two
the wheel hop is caused by the oem lower motor mount. It was the same with the veloster n. It gets fixed by replacing it with a stiffer aftermarket rear mount.
Imagine buying a brand new car and having to fix it.
Yea more nvh vs wheel hop when mashing the gas from a stop… I prefer to just roll it before mashing the gas 🤷♂️ it’s a good mod if u bring to the drag strip or don’t care about the nvh
it gets fixed by voiding the warranty 😂

Awsome review as always, guys! I use my Elantra N mostly for track driving and I'd love to have Kona N in my fleet so I have more versatility. Hopefully that happens oneday. :)
BTW, I've noticed Canada spec EN gets heated steering and sunroof in manual so I'm guessing it's close to a Korean spec EN. US gets neither of them. :(
The Elantra N looks so damn sick in that blue color. Seriously considering it if I can’t get the GR Corolla
Honestly, if the Kona N was AWD I would be in the dealership tomorrow to trade in my GTi. I really would take it over a Golf R at this point.
