Hmmm, I also thought I needed a mechanical shutter when traveling, but I have the A74 for that and the A7s3...Looks like the ZV-E1 is the winner for me!! Thank you for this!!
That's awesome... I'm glad I could finally twist your arm and get you to come to the dark side! You're going to have so many amazing cameras, it really will be interesting to see which ones you gravitate to most... or if any you'll retire!
Since you have an A7C and a ZV-E1, as far as I know, I can't save all settings when I switch between photo and video on my A7C. I manually change from setting M to Video, from no picture profile to number 7, and I increase the exposure compensation from -1 to +1. That's probably my biggest issue with the camera, to slow. Can you save all settings to memory in the ZV-E1?
So, I think if I'm understanding you correctly, you want to be able to switch from video and photo and keep all your settings the same on the zve1? If that's the question, then yes, you can either have unique settings per photo or video mode, or the same on the zve1... I choose to keep it the same. On the A7C, I mostly shoot in M in photo mode and either snap the shutter or press record and hardly ever use video mode except to adjust the mic or see the 16x9 frame in advance. I do this on the a7c because turning the dial from video to photo is slow, you're right! Yet, on the zve1, it is a quick switch! For me, on the a7c I shoot in a custom picture profile ("c-cinetone") or hlog3 and shoot jpg+ raw... Whereas on the zve1, I shoot in s-cinetone or slog3 in JPEG only (so I can use clear image zoom). Hope that makes sense and I understood your question!

Great video! I'm in the position where I do video/photography 50/50. I have the A7C, and when it comes to photography, it is my favorite camera so far. I've sold the Leica Q, Fuji, S5, and EOS R. The A7C's perfect size really appeals to me. However, when it comes to video, I feel like it's hard to achieve vibrant colors with a punch. It's difficult to explain, but in your video, I can see that the ZV-E1 is a nice upgrade. On the other hand, I pursue this as a hobby and mainly document my family. Personally, I don't usually crop photos and set an export limit at 14MB. I recently bought the 11mm 1.8 lens, and it's been great and would survive the E1 active Steadyshot crop😂. If you wasn’t a professional and primarily focused on family documentation, what camera would you pick personally?
Fantastic question... I think if I was in your position, I'd hold on to my A7C until the A7CII is announced. I have a feeling that the mark2 will solve a lot of those issues while giving you more MP, resolution, 10bit color, better stabilization, etc. The zve1 is a much better video camera, but doesn't sound like it is necessary for you right now. The A7Cii will likely be announced in mid-October, so it will probably be worth the wait!
Ah you made some great points on these 2! IT’s gonna be zv-e1 for me, but if Sony makes the a7cii too good for video (rolling shutter in particular) I would get (selfishly) annoyed 😂.
Ha ha... I get that! I'm going to also have a tough decision to make when the A7Cii comes out. However, I do think we can presume safely that it will have the same rolling shutter performance as the a74, so the zve1 will still be better on that front! The zve1 will have better lowlight performance and the a74 will be sharper and with an evf... Everything else might be about the same!
That's a really good question... I think it's recommended to use a higher shutter speed with both dynamic active stabilization and with Sony's Catalyst Browse as it makes the footage look smoother, but if you're careful you can get away with a slower shutter speed. However, I have used dynamic stabilization with an f1.4 lens, at ISO 12800 in SLOG3, and with a shutter of 1/120 at night and it looked great. Yet, that is something to keep in mind for shooting at night with dynamic stabilization--to have a fast lens on hand. @@ContractorsCornerConsulting congrats... And I know how overwhelming it is trying to figure it all out! I'm still constantly making "mistakes" or just learning what not to do next time. I tried for a bit running a tascam, external recorder...which is great for booming a mic near your subject, but syncing up in post was annoying. Then I'd get a small on camera shotgun, like the rode ntg, but it's hard to isolate dialogue well... So now, I will use a wireless mic system (with lav on the speakers), while I'm simultaneously running a boom mic. Nothing worse than getting the shot but missing the audio. Either way, sounds like you're figuring it out and congrats again!!
Thank you so much...I really appreciate that. I'm not sure how many people were deciding between these cameras, but I hope more people will consider the original A7C and realize what solid buy the zve1 still is! Thanks again!
I wonder how much the lenses played a role in the overall quality, idk the a7c looks better and I can’t pin point exactly why when technically the specs of the zve1 should produce better image but the colors like at 1:50 could it be your color grading I just feel the a7c looks better even with the auto profiles at 3:30
That's interesting, and I can completely see how it both could be a personal preference and something I messed up on with color grading... Also some things don't translate well over UA-cam. However, I can say for me that without a doubt the zve1 is much better for video and even though it has less resolution, it's even more useful in photo because of the dynamic range. I'm actually currently testing the A7Cii vs the ZVE1 as I'm debating which one I will keep and I'm still leaning towards the zve1... But I prefer the handling of the A7Cii and I love having an EVF. I will say it's splitting hairs though as all these cameras are amazing and more than good enough for my needs, so you couldn't really pick the wrong one, just slight preferential differences. Are you currently trying to choose which to purchase?
@@BrianCatalano so I purchased a zve1 for vlogs with a Sony 20mm f1.8 loveeee this combo but after seeing this video I started second guessing the quality because the a7c looks more smoother, I literally watched this video probably about 20 times replaying those video samples over and over lol I even was trying to research which sensor is in the a7c to see what other camera compares to the same image it produces so I can buy it as a secondary camera 😂🤦🏽♀️
@@LALONNIE ha ha... I get that! A little buyers remorse anxiety!! @@BrianCatalano ok I’m going to hold on to this, I figured I made a really good decision cause I do feel i shouldn’t have to upgrade for a while, I have a couple Sony apsc lenses to go along with it as well I really would love to see Sony give the zve10 a nice upgrade
@@kevinrohoman6857 I definitely think so, I was surprised at how well the photos from the zve1 held up especially compared to the A7C! The only downside is no EVF, but it wasn't a problem for me...
My general feeling too... But I imagine if I was more into photography, I might lean the A7C. I do think more people are going to realize what a beast the ZV-E1 is though!
You are right, and I completely agree! The sensors couldn't be more different (so many confounding variables). I have since sold the a7c for the A7Cii, and am also currently debating which to keep between the that and the zve1. And again, not an apples to apples comparison. Yet, I have been surprised how many people I talk to that their main consideration as a B or A-camera is size. So even today, I've heard people who have gone from the zve1 to the a7cr--as well as that opposite swap as their main travel camera....and that's surprisingly more common than I'd have thought. That's like comparing an apple to a similarly sized grenade! So I totally get your point!
@@mattcero1 well, that is obviously a great and difficult question... I really think it boils down to how important is video to you? The zve1 is without question, the best compact video camera on the market because of not just how great the sensor is, but the dynamic stability is so good. Now the A7C is way cheaper and a better photography camera... that also has sharper video too! Yet, it's only 8bit color and has bad stability by comparison. So the question might simply be, are you more of a photographer or videographer... And how tight is your budget? The difference between a used A7C for $1200 or a used Zve1 for $1900, is a really good lens that you could buy!?
Sorry you had a bad experience with it... It sounds like your head is in the right place with what you need, and the A7C should do you well... You'll probably end up putting more money into audio equipment too, the more you tinker, but again seems like you'll be set up for that kind of shooting.
I'd be interested to hear your experience with the A7C when you get it... Until then, best of luck!
@@BrianCatalano Had the A7c delivered today with a 50mm G lens and a Rode NTG. Spent hours working on figuring out settings LOL. Going to go test it out later this week with the NTG in a noisy office and see how it does. I have a Zoom H8 I could run sound through separately but I am hoping I can get the NTG to do what we need just to keep things as simple as possible :)
Best comparison but only 5k views.....
Well, let me put your mind to ease if I can, you have the best vlogging lens and camera combo in existence in my opinion, and as soon as I got the ZV-E1, I sold my A7C. The zve1 is seriously better in every way...and maybe I just didn't do a good job illustrating that in this video! You should be good for awhile now, too!!
@@BrianCatalano ok I’m going to hold on to this, I figured I made a really good decision cause I do feel i shouldn’t have to upgrade for a while, I have a couple Sony apsc lenses to go along with it as well I really would love to see Sony give the zve10 a nice upgrade
@@BrianCatalano & thank you soooooo much for your help your great!
Dope video! Video zv1 if you want solid video & photos a7c
Thank you! Yeah, that's a good point! I was surprised though how good the zve1 was though at taking pics!
@@BrianCatalano for taking pics of the family and vacation trips, would ZV-E1 be ok? Most pics will just be going on social media.
@@kevinrohoman6857 I definitely think so, I was surprised at how well the photos from the zve1 held up especially compared to the A7C! The only downside is no EVF, but it wasn't a problem for me...
Zv-E1 got that camera beat
My general feeling too... But I imagine if I was more into photography, I might lean the A7C. I do think more people are going to realize what a beast the ZV-E1 is though!
Not apples to apples comparison at all as you've got way too many variables going on at 1:35 and beyond.
I'm torn between the A7C and ZV-E1 for my first budget full frame. Tell me which to get! @@BrianCatalano
The difference between a used A7C for $1200 or a used Zve1 for $1900, is a really good lens that you could buy!?
just wanna say something very. MY MAMA LOVES ONLY ME
Ha ha... Hope you don't have siblings reading this!
Best
Appreciate it!!
ZVE1 is trash with overheating
Sorry you had a bad experience with it... Thankfully I've had mine for about four months and only had it overheat once when shooting long intervals of 4k 120fps in direct sunlight on a 100 degree day. My fx3 probably would have had trouble with that condition too, but again... Feel bad that your zve1 overheated. I'd say get the fx30 then for the fan...
