  • Turtle Excluders for Blue Crab Traps [Pots], in this video we'll be making our Blue Crab Traps Legal by installing Turtle Excluders on them, both home made and factory made types. Florida recently passed a law that all recreational blue crab traps must be fitted with turtle excluders by March 1 2023.
We'll be installing the Turtle Excluders the way we interpret the Florida law, other states may have different rules so make sure you check. #turtleexcluders #howtoinstallturtleexcluders #bluecrabtraps #bluecrabs #turtleextruders

fwiw, it's for a specific turtle called a diamondback terrapin. They live in salt water marshes and eat crabs, so they go into the traps to eat your catch and get trapped and drown. I would think the odds of catching them in open water would be rare.

As an Electrician, we install thousands of zip ties (Ty-Raps). We always open our bulk quantity bags in that fashion. Also, if you use a set of Lineman’s Pliers or the equivalent and twist the excess tag end up close to the knuckle it will separate itself (usually 3 or 4 complete turns) without leaving a sharp end. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve lost blood on those sharp ends left by inexperienced Electricians.
    More government restrictions 😢.

Thanks for the info about the "turtle excluders". You saved me a lot of money in fines. Just so you know, FWC will give you as many "turtle excluders" as you need for free. I just called them the other day and ordered 4 for each of my 5 traps. FWC calls them "Bycatch Reduction Devices" (BRD). When you call, just tell them you need BRD's and they'll send you out what you need, no limit and again, free. Very nice folks. I'm from the area (in Florida), so I'm really enjoying your fishing, crabbing and cooking videos - big fan and learning a lot.

Hi Sam & Joyce, All those excluder devices do is take money out of your pocket. I've never caught a turtle in the traps I had, but I did catch a small one with the hand nets. I love your pet gecko. A few weeks ago I left the Walmart parking lot and when I came to the stop light I had one on the hood of my truck. I told him to buckle up for the ride & gave a nudge to my wiper blades. It climbed on them and stayed put til I pulled in my driveway. I'm just glad it wasn't a snake!!🌹🌴
