A mobile Diablo game was literally Blizzard's April Fools joke in 2014.
lmf82456 a lot of blizzards april fools joke actually have a tendency of becoming true
Panderans were also a big haha April fools joke... Then they made an entire expansion about them. Why? Well my guess is that it had something to do with attracting the same region that this mobile game is directed at.
@@onenerdvs9639 At least Pandarens were already in Warcraft 3 and MoP was actually quite decent. They didn't go too overboard with the Chinese theme and it had a good story and nice mechanics. If you just got past the first impressions, MoP was a quality Blizzard game. Diablo Immortal isn't even a Blizzard game. It's a Netease game. I've never imagined Blizzard would stoop so low and sell their IPs to the highest bidders.
@@onenerdvs9639 Pandaren were joked as a race for WC3 and it was so popular that they added chen stormstout as a neutral hero
Not to mention that they invited Weird Al Yankovic at bliizcon2016 to sing "We all got a cell phone" with a bunch of storm troopers in the back.
Such hypocrites
When you announce mobile game development in front of Hardcore PC gamer
R.I.P Diablo
Everyone should have walked out of Blizzcon the moment they announced that. Blizzard just took a giant dump on their fans.
A mobile game wasn't a TERRIBLE idea (though what they've shown looks like garbage).
It was the part where that was the ONLY thing they announced after hyping a "good year for diablo".
@SomePerson
As a women and a gamer i'm both flabbergasted and insulted by your comment. Gamers pay $60+ for games and are entitled to good games for their money. A mobile game by and for a predominately pc market is a bad business call. If this was in china or japan, sure. They are mainly a mobile market.
calling fans whiny girls is both an insult to girls and gamers. You guys act like we can't be upset when companies pull a bait and switch. events like blizzcon are set up in advanced, with tickets going up months prior. They hyped up diablo then WEEKS prior (when ppl already had tickets, flights, hotel rooms) they stated to lower your expectations. they made diablo mobile the BIG DEAL game of blizzcon.
every customer has a right to be entitled to a good product regardless of product. what if tv makers hyped up a good tv, but stated it was gonna be a cellphone screen last min. or monitor makers hyped a good monitor which again was just for a cellphone last min.
All I have is a Xbox 1. Cannot afford a phone get enough to be able to play this nor can I buy a pc. The Diablo franchise his efficiently precluded me from there newest game. And I feel like I've been stabbed in the back...
That why there only fat or very skinny people in the video!! They are pc gamer

The world: “Do you guys not have enough money?”
Blizzard: “Do you guys not have phones?”
The world: “Do you guys not have enough conscience?”

Blizzard is dead. No king rules forever. I feel sorry for Morhaime. Activition ruined his company. I just hope they can ditch activition and get back to how it use to be
Blizzard : Do you guys not have phones?
Me : Do you guys not have brains?

If instead of responding with the phone thing, Cheng could have responded: "This Diablo will not be available on PC, but we do have other projects in the works for that particular platform- projects that I believe will make the players very happy."
"...just not right now..."
You gotta realise that this was happening in the moment and they reacted with this first instinct which was to joke to try and alleviate the mood, didnt turn out too good
@@team4star1 True, but this is right up there with "Let them eat cake" as far as off the cuff attempts at humor showing just how out of touch you are with your audience. Luckily, Cheng won't be beheaded for it. At least not physically.
He had to push their mobile game that no one wants, and i doubt we will have any actually real decent releases for diablo, they want to make money not fans
Unless they don't 😅

When they went public they lost all control of the company. It's why you don't go public if you care about your products.
They let money decide.
thats because it wasnt accountants doing it lmao
that what they did. this game is made in china and for chinese people mainly. Most chinese don't own PCs, they have smartphones. and they like micro transactions.
The only question is why did they still organized the blizzcon in EU/NA ? If they organised it in China the crowd would have been positive
The birth of a meme "You guys don't have phones?"

That's one of the things that made Redshirt's question so funny that isn't mentioned in most videos I've seen. @@dantejolly8916 100% correct. I have a decent phone and still dont play anything on it, because I hate that platform. Its not my PC.
It is worse when you can't play Immortal offline. It feels like nobody understands the "true" nature of mobile gaming.
Phones don't last you a whole week like Flip Phones do. It is known that Data connection can reduce your battery life. For a smartphone with non-removable battery for better technology seems pointless for mobile gaming with a constant online connection. It is a shame for Blizzard to follow Konami's footsteps. They had a year to talk about this and everyone expected a PC release.
I am pretty sure the only company that understands mobile gaming is Bethesda. They released Fallout Shelter for mobile and now its a PC release. It is a known fact if you develop an app for a phone, it NEEEDS to be offline.
You are better off playing Diablo 3 for the Switch.

I was heartbroken when I watched the announcement.
I don't care about Diablo, because it's not my kind of game. But I care about the video game industry. You and the Red Shirt Guy were so important, because you represent the opinion of all of us gamers! It's a matter of fact that the current average gamer is 36 years old. That means, most of the gamers are still video game generation and not smart phone gereration. I still have a samsung s3 because I use my phone as a communication device, but I own a switch, ps4 and a very, very good pc, because as I said before I'm part of the video game gereration! The whole diablo immortal situation reminds me of mistwalker. They made 3 great console games and now they are wasting their talents on creating mobile games...
Yoooo s3 squad where you at?

The mere mention of mobile players as "gamers" saddens me to the core. You can't call those shitty, cheap, copycat, pay-to-win shitfests of code games. I'm in one of those young generations, and honestly believe we could probably thanos snap 95% of mobile games and nothing of value would be lost.

accept reality diablo has always been the least profitable IP for blizzard and
has always been an underdog compared to all other blizzard IP and hence
never had any value and for intense and purpose a failure compared to

Blizzard reported over US$1 billion in revenue during the first year
of its release, and had more than 40 million players after two years for
overwatch
WOW expansion pack, Warlords of Draenor, launched on November 13th
and sold more than 3.3 million copies within its first 24 hours on sale.
This pushed the number of paying subscribers from 7.4 million up to 10 million.
These users pay publisher-developer Blizzard Entertainment £9.99 per
month ($15 in the US) for the privilege to play the game above character
level 20.
Blizzard increased this fee from £8.99 to £9.99 in the UK earlier
this year, with slight discounts for those who buy several months in
advance.
This means, if it can retain its 10 million subscriber base, World of
Warcraft will be generating around £100 million per month - or £1.2
billion a year - just from subscription fees.
Hearthstone is making as much as US$40 million per month as of August 2017.

@@avikdas9910 wow does not have 10m players😂😂😂😂

No! You, sir. Are a hero. Thank you for expressing our rage against these fools. You and that red shirt guy. You two have every damn right to say what you guys said. Good job!!
Blizzard f'd up huge with this debacle. It is by far the biggest video game company disconnect. They shot themselves in the foot when ending huge convention with a Mobile game of a copy cat game. Endless of God is a Chinese copy cat of diablo 3, the whole "we made this from the ground up." Is a COMPLETE lie. Mobile games have templates you can re-use and re-skin, it's why you see three different versions of the same facebook games. It's stupidly easy to pull game data from a reputable game, use their likeness in mechanical and animation, and slap a new coat of paint on it. Netease stole the mechanics and visual style of Diablo 3 to become a popular Chinese mobile game. Now Blizzard is using Netease's idea of easy money, to try and fool a westernized audience into handing over their hard earned cash for a poorly made, easily made mobile game. Mobile games are infinitely easier to craft and make. And btw, their not that huge in scope. There is a reason why they implement a stamina system. So you don't beat the game in about a day or two. Serious Blizzard, you screwed up big time. You pissed off a huge demographic of you're consumer base and it's gonna hurt them hard in sales for any major release even with fans dipping into other fans basses like WOW and StarCraft, it has hurt a lot of fans. Here I was hoping they would announce a Diablo remake for modern pc and try to bring in a newer generation to the origins of diablo. That would have been such a HUGE intake in sales not only for their original game, but you'd see more sales in Diablo 2 and Diablo 3 because people would try getting into the Diablo franchise then for the first time if they hadn't already. God damn did they ever mess up with Diablo Immortal. I hope this doesn't kill the Diablo franchise because of this stab at fans.

your actions were 100% reasonable, and you did well to be reserved and polite while the company effectively shat in pc gamers' faces
He wasn’t obligated to. But still good on him. He’s like Xavier and Red Shirt is like Magneto.
Take solace in the fact that you and the red shirt guy single-handedly shook the gaming community and brought Activision Blizzard's stock prices tumbling down. Not every day you can say affected the stock market like that. Well done.
Honestly they most likely did not. Many popular stocks have taken a significant hit in the past week or two. ATVI has also already been performing badly for months now, and it dropped much more sharply at various times in mid-October than it did after Blizzcon.
The market is weird and unpredictable. With the exception of earnings calls or legal troubles, accurately linking a stock's performance to a single event is pretty much impossible.
EDIT: I checked the news, and apparently there was an earnings call very recently. That must have been it.
Its good that you and Red Shirt Guy asked these questions and got those reactions. Let this be a lesson to Blizzard what happens when you cater to investors rather than the PC Gamers who are the people that actually buy the game.
Now ill admit, i only ducked out of blizzards stock once i seen it falling, not because of this, but the reality is that i am like i feel most fans of diablo are also investors in the stock market now. Diablo 2 is the best of them all, good loot system, blood and some gore, actual fun and can play with only your friends and nobody to bother you and your friends and most of all, it is from the era when blizzard "never dissapointed it's fans"
u the man!
Same. I played a lot of Runescape back in grade school, that's about it, not really much of an MMORPG guy, I'm just bringing myself up to speed on recent drama. Speaking as an outsider, this looks like an unfathomable slap in the face for Diablo fans. I'm just wondering what the crowd's reaction was after they made that comment "do you guys not have phones?", because of every video I've watched of this, the clip always immediately ends after this sentence. A comment like that sounds like it's just baiting the already-pissed crowd to boo even louder.
Me too!
Victor Jasso you hv never played Diablo 3? That is nuts. It is so good on xboxone. The community on the xbone is all mic up and ps4 is a bunch a fucking retarded idiots who never stay by your side and don't have mics.

I was there, no one touched Immortal, there were almost never lines for immortal while overwatch, which is literally available now and often on sale for $20 had massive lines. That says it all. No one there wanted this. Bad place to announce it, bad idea to re-skin an existing sub-par chinese mobile game.

99% of games are like that with chinese games. they put in an auto battle system so you can afk and progress. A few of their big MMO do that like onigiri even on console.
Azazura Azura wrong.Do research first.
yes they have alot of microtransactions everywhere but usually only auto running.. not auto attacking or anything else..and before you say anything im living i here and i played over 30 chinese games already soo..i kinda hate when ppl dont know shit but still comment like they know it all..now you know something.

I have done my research. i played over 100 different mobile games both Chinese and Korean. Everyone i played had an auto attack system, or was a clicker. I hate when ppl like you jump to defend bad products abs claim people don't do research.
to be honest, I like the auto clearing lower level content feature in games that offer it, so I can get a good base, and then go and tackle the hard content.
At least it will remove third party bots, if the game includes a bot.
Kind of agree with Azazura here. Even if the game doesn't have an auto attack or auto progress feature, there's not much difference when you can just sit there and have a pen just tap one spot on the screen non stop to beat everything

Whoever sculpted the presentation is a clueless marketer. Wyatt had a script, everybody on stage had a script. They all had rehearsed. It was slick. Until the "Do you not all have phones" blurted question as the house of cards fell and they realized no one was on their side. Instead of a joyous loving audience (normal at Blizzcon), they were facing an angry hostile crowd. No wonder they fumbled. I would too.
100$ for a set glove. 100$ for materials to level your Necromancer to level 20 now, 2wice weekly challenge rift events to grind for 1/10 of a level for the top 10% of performers in the challenge rift... This kind of pricing is in Marvel Contest of Champions now. Different game, but I spent 70$ to try to get the Hallowe'en themed champs last October (Happy Birthday to me!). I managed to get a weak champion of the desired type, and 6 lesser champs that were useless for that $.
That's mobile gaming and its pricing. Usurious. Once they taste the sweet sweet profits... It's over. Greed takes over.
Just the screen with a big D4 for PC is one of our projects would've made everybody happy.
I legit think that even if they make D4 it will be garbage mobile business level, and even if it doesnt release in that state (if the game is 60 dollars) it will probably get worse pretty fast with more updates, the grindy nature of diablo is perfectly suited for that
"No wonder they fumbled" yeah uh...PR reps don't fumble. That's why they are PR reps. Wrong people were on stage to begin with. AS SOON as the boos started, they should have pivoted:
"Whoa whoa whoa guys, this project simply isn't high enough quality for PC. Give us time, the next main installment of Diablo on PC is going to be revolutionary, not just another reskin. Bet on that. If it were ready by now, it would be a sub-par product. It's still in the oven."

Diablo Immortal would be a strict free to play game with countless microtansactions like clash of clans, and would be a garbage.

Fluffster, you didn't do anything wrong. Your question was very reasonable, your tone was non-judgmental, and I applaud your self-control. That really sucks that they didn't pick you for the streaming thing, but it was cool that the announcer guy (I don't remember his name) did take a personal interest in you before hand and after the presentation ceremony. His answer to your question sounded like it just had not occurred to them to do a PC version of the game, rather than that they had deliberately ruled it out. I don't think the booing was directed at him or at you, but was just towards the "mobile" game itself and the decisions that had led up to it.
On the bright side, Windows 10 was designed to run games cross-platform to "bridge the gap" between PCs, phones and mobile devices. If enough people want a PC version, Blizzard should be able to port Diablo Immortal to Windows 10 mobile easily enough since the game is already designed for Apple and Google phones, and doing that would also let you run it on Windows 10 PCs as well. They may not be making Windows phones anymore, but the architecture is still there so why not make use of it? That's "if" you guys want it, though. Personally, I have no interest in this or any phone games. Not since the 2048 incident. Of which we shall not speak...
In other news, Warcraft III was a great game, so this "Warcraft III: Reforged" sounds promising. I played the Warcraft games a lot until they killed the series and went with with WoW instead. I hope they bundle the DLC content into it like Bethesda did with Skyrim SE. Maybe this will even lead to the long-awaited Warcraft 4. Many people have been waiting for that one since even before Diablo 2 came out, so it sometimes gives me a little inner chuckle when people say they've been waiting for Diablo 4 for a long time. Lol.
Buck up, man. Things will get better. Have a good week.
Win 10 was only designed to cross platform microsoft phones not iOS nor Android. it might still be easier to port but I don't think by much
Um, no. Win10 was designed to give software a standardized call interface regardless of what type of device architecture it is running on, including x86, Motorola and ARM processors. (The driver layer of an OS handles the hardware, so the hardware platform is irrelevant.) That actually makes it very easy to port things like this. The game - and any game or software program for that matter - makes calls to its library, and the library handles all of the interfaces with the OS. So you swap out that library with a library you've created for the new OS, add keyboard and mouse support, and you're basically done. This is part of what I did for a living so I've done this a lot.
Tbh I would think the choice of words is more PR talk than anything else, you aren't going to tell a furious audience it will never happen but you can say there are no plans at this time - both mean the exact same thing but one leaves it open to possibility in your head, even if the suits above him have no intentions of ever changing those plans.

I remember playing MORPG/Hack & Slash games on my mobile when I studied abroad. And I remember 3 things, having to constantly LF a decent wi-fi conection, having to play with my phone plugged to a portable charger and ofc, getting my S5 melted cuz phones aren't ment to be used on games for 5-8 straight hours. If im playing a game, I dont wanna be limited by my 4G/shitty wi-fi, nor my battery or my phone capacity...
This. I'm tired of having to hold my phone and pray that my reaction time won't be hampered by the wrong part of my thumb coming in contact with the screen. Action games on mobile must be easy by default or else they are impossible. And thus paywalls exist to artificially raise the difficulty as no amount of skill can overcome the flawed design of playing with a tiny touch screen on an overheating phone.
Wow. I always assumed the trembling in your voice during the Q&A was some form of disappointment. I never would have assumed rage. Thanks for the context video.
In truth, Blizzard just wants to renew their player base. Why keep the old player base who dislike micro transactions and lack of LAN multiplayer when we can invest on a new player base who love phones, micro transactions and have grown in a multiplayer always-online environment? Can't blame them for that... it's just that as a member of the original player base, it hurts to feel used and discarded by a company we helped to grow. Capitalism, baby.
Oscar Addiel ooof.... as a 10-11 yr old playing warcraft 1, 2, diablo 1,2...shit i even played Blackthorne on the sega genesis.... this got me right in the feels :-( The fortnite generation is shaping the landscape for the future of Gaming.. Scary.
they are stupid. that player base you are talking about don't have the money to throw on those mt games and eventually they get over it and move on to another game or pc of course. the pc gamers are mostly more wealthy and they will spend in the long term more money and invite more to buy the same game and play together. there is a reason internet cafe even in asia are full. not stupid phones with 1 hour of gaming battery. the money they will loose are double than the money will gain from high school kids... who spend almost zero money on mobile games.
It can be like Microsoft thought "smartphone market is promising, how about turning Windows into mobile OS".
Johnnyxp64 That‘s incorrect. They only need about 0.1% or less of the player base to be wales to make a profit. If the sheer numbers are high it‘s likely to attract wales.
So it is more profitable to invest in a children/casual centric environment as it‘s likely to pick up more traction.
Why is it more profitable? Because it basically doesn‘t cost anything to develop a mobile game such as Diablo Immortal compared to a full fledged PC game.
@Dark Cat IIRC a friend told me about a chinese forum for diablo that is against mobile diablo too
I applaud your question and your demeanor. Your were far more polite and professional than ANY dev from Activision has been in years. You have gained a sub from me and I hope from many more. Bravo, Sir.
I feel bad for the Diablo community. I jumped ship for Path of Exile a while ago, but I understand the frustration they must be feeling. Diablo has gotten little to no love in a while and this announcement just reinforces how little Blizzard cares about its Diablo fanbase.
@Patrick Flanagan It might turn out good for GGG, but I personally dislike PoE and do not at all compare it to what "Diablo 3 should have been". I don't like Diablo 3, but PoE is such a drag of an experience for me.
