    When I was a kid in the 90’s I hunted with my dad. I started going at the age of 8. We didn’t have a youth hunt. In fact we didn’t have an enclosed blind. We sat in what seemed to be the unrelenting cold and wind that Michigan can bring in mid November. I like that the kids now get to go out when it’s warm and enjoy an evening of hunting. With that said, they don’t learn how to hunt or how difficult it actually is. Walking out to a tower blind over a bean field when it’s 80 doesn’t teach them how to hunt. It shows them that it’s easy… until they’re 17 and then they are over it because they’ve never been challenged to embrace the suck. We live in a time where you get “buck shamed” whether you’re a kid or an adult. There’s too many people ready to cut you down for a spike. Over the years I’ve logged countless hours in the stand learning a little more each time I go. Long story short, we need to teach kid how to hunt and not how to just shoot the big buck. I think a doe only hunt is just fine.

      @jrmcbuck1 I hunt in one of the APR zones in Northern Michigan and I don't believe the numbers are accurate...we have seen more mature bucks for sure bc of the APR's but the overall deer population is still down. Little kids dont understand the importance or significance of a deer over 150” they will be just as thrilled about a doe. And teaching them the importance of balancing the population by forcing them to take a doe as their first deer is just as important as getting them into hunting. Not to mention all the dads out there that use the youth hunt as a way to get out and hunt early under the false pretense of taking there kid hunting is all too common nowadays.

      Good comment. Trophies are nice but the hunt isn't about the trophy, or even the kill. Any hunter, kid or adult, needs to learn to respect the animal, that the kill is a reward for a good hunt. A doe is just as valuable a success as a 10-point buck. I know I'm not saying it right. You older hunters probably know what I mean.

I took my son hunting with me during the regular seasons, both archery and gun seasons and when he hunted, he carried the gun or bow, not me. As you said, we did not have youth season when we grew up and I see it as an excuse for dads to tell their kids they took them hunting for their weekend and the rest of the season they can't go with. Kids need to be included in the regular season, because its more about the hunting with family and friends experience and they are missing out on that if they only get to hunt during the early youth hunt. just my 2 cents.

      I hate the idea...but I do agree 100%.
      In my 25 years of deer hunting in Michigan, I've only filled both buck tags 3 times, and most years were buckless. I do believe that a 1 buck rule, would make those "most years" not be buckless!
      Bringing back baiting would be the best thing they could do to reach their goal of more doe's taken. Higher success rates will also help get younger hunters into it.

    • @fermiticus4034
      @fermiticus4034 Місяць тому +1

      @BpLavoie Did you not comprehend...
      "Bringing back baiting would be the best thing they could do to reach their goal of more doe's taken"? They want MORE deer taken, and BAITING is the simplest way to get more deer taken.
      That's great that you hunt a property with so many deer, that you can be far more selective...and be a "real hunter". If I even see a dozen, for the whole season, I'm pretty happy with that, because most years, it's only in the 5-10 range. I do get mine (several) every year, without bait. If we could though, I would...so I wouldn't have to be out there as much. As much as I love being out there, time is limited. Going days on end without seeing so much as a hair, gets really old, really quick.
      Before making smug comments, think a little. Not everybody has it as good as you. It's so easy to be a "real hunter", when you've got a solid population in your hunting area. That's kinda like bragging about catching a limit at a trout farm.

    I have a averaged 25 days in the woods hunting and countless days observing out of season. The last few years public land deer sightings have diminished greatly. The almighty DNR has yet to realize public land cannot be managed the same as private property and watch as hunter numbers continue to drop. It's pretty sad that they think it's ok for a hunter to not see a deer for 10 days in a row. I advised my nephew (in South Carolina) not to come to Michigan if they want to see deer much less shoot one. I live and hunt in the NW lower pensula.

    im a disabled hunter.....my take on the change of taking away the bucks from us and the children should actually be done differently.....the state says that there's only 8000 deer harvested during these two hunts. As a former taxidermist it would make more sense to extend the season to a 4 day season (Friday to Monday) and implement a rule that if you want to harvest a buck you must harvest a doe first.... before you say extending the season 2 days isnt feasible from a standpoint of having people to help with hunting on those 2 extra days it can be done after work.....and by forcing the hunters to harvest a doe prior to killing a buck it serves 3 purposes: (1) it helps DNR/NRC requirements to lower doe population, (2) it gives the kids/disabled an extra opportunity at harvesting an extra animal they wouldn't otherwise, (3) it gives each family an extra animal for meat for that year.....

    i do not have kids that would hunt the youth hunt anymore, nor do i have disabled friends that would hunt the special hunt, however the entire design of those hunts were to give these youths and disabled hunters at better chance at scoring as good deer as they are not as mobile as many of us and have to in most cases hunt much closer to trails and roads, i disagree with the state removing bucks as legal harvest during this season,the state is currently trying to decimate the deer herd and have been for a few years,this is merely a ply to get more does removed from the woods, as not enough hunters are taking the numbers to ruin our deer herd, everyone thinks a 1 to 1 ratio is better, ask states that have that close a ratio how many days they are allowed in the woods to hunt, ask them if they are able to put fresh meat in their freezers year after year, some of you all keep screeaming and crying for that 1 to 1 ratio and you will have 3 to 5 days hunting with a bow and 3 days with a firearm per year, I personally love to be sitting in a tree more times than i can count i passed on harvesting a deer with a bow and with a firearm due to an assortment of reasons many times i just didnt feel like gutting and dragging it that day or decided it was just to cold to take off my gloves to deal with it, its high time we hunters took control of our hunting away from state employees that have never been in the woods, shot a bow or firearm and put it where it belongs in the hands of hunters and fishermen, and biologists

    Dave here, MLive has an article out today pertaining to this subject.
    R-Rep Thomas Albert from Lowell, has introduced legislation, to Reverse the new antlerless rules for youth and Liberty hunts.
    Personally, I disagree with ALL EARLY Deer hunts. I'm 58 yrs old, been hunting since I've been legally allowed.
    I've noticed much change in deer habits and movement ever since the introduction of the first Early Doe hunt 15 plus years ago.
    The biggest change is that the mature animals, Buck and Doe's go nocturnal and stay that way pretty much the entirety of the Deer hunting season.
    If the DNR wants more deer harvested though out the state. Go back to Deer season starts Oct 1.
    Let the Bucks and Doe's establish their territories in mid to late September NATURALLY without hunting pressure from all these early hunts, And you will get a MUCH BETTER overall harvest from Oct 1 thru Dec 31.

    One of the best things PA did for deer hunting was start statewide antler point restrictions. I think your state would benefit from going to a one buck state as well. I see a lot of 3½ year old bucks or older now compared to 20 years ago. And some of the bucks now being killed in this state would have been the buck of a lifetime 20 years ago as well and folks would have come from miles around to see it. The first year antler restrictions started I killed a 140" deer and word spread so fast that folks were coming directly from the woods on the same day to my house to see it like it was a 200" deer. It's still a tough state to hunt because of pressure and the fact that you need to find rugged terrain to escape the pressure, but it's like a completely different state now compared to before antler restrictions. That's awesome that you did this video for folks!

Michigan has never managed deer properly and young boys killing spikes for the sake of saying they shot a “buck” is part of the problem. Want kids to get excited about hunting? Get them excited about being providers of food for their family and self reliance. That will have a lifelong influence on the kind of man a boy will grow up to be. By far more important than bragging about the 3 point he shoots.

      The badge, the honor, "the brag" whatever you want to call is embedded in the lore of hunting and is never going away. The youth season has gone on long enough to show it had little impact on on the overall buck harvest. All you have to is look at Michigan Buckpole over the last 5 years to see the results of Big if not Bigger bucks being taken in our state. The ones who wanted the rule changes, have never taken a youth or handicapped hunter into the field and seen the transformation in child's hunting journey when they've taken their 1st deer especially a Buck!! If hunting was only about meat and providing, which is a big part. Than the argument of whether they take a spike, a 3pt, a doe, or trophy Buck has no merit, it's only that "Bragg" for grown men that is the concern??
