    • @GetOffMyLawnRecords

Jazz is definitely a deep rabbit hole with a lot more theory. The blues with its serious limitations on form move quickly to phrasing as the primary focus whereas jazz you have more options for the next note.
And then there’s jazz songs in a blues form, and that’s really instructive as to how you move from blues to jazz, but learning to work your way through a 12 bar blues in any key at any tempo is part of what you’d consider the larger academic jazz pedagogy

Hi Jamie. Hope you enjoyed the coffees I bought for you! Your lessons are worth many more coffees. Thanks for your superb teaching. I am working on your handout with the 5 different licks. Taking the key of 'F' I note that you use the Fm blues scale (which is in the key of Ab) and the FMaj blues scale. Why would you not use the Dm blues scale which is the natural minor of "F"? I always have difficulty in selecting whether to use the maj or minor version. Help please.

    • @GetYourSaxTogether

What in Tarnation! brilliantly explained! Side note: About a mile, just a bit, under two kilometers, from where I live, in New Orleans, is a place called Congo Square, it is the spot where it is believed, that the "Mississippi Delta" Blues was birthed.( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Congo_Square) However, I believe, Jamey traces its real origin, earlier to West Africa, which makes sense; to me. Never knew. You learn something new everyday! This video is a gem! I will repeatedly watch this; good job, so well done!!!! 🎶 yup, I agree with Mr. Beckett's poetry, below this comment, "best saxophone channel on UA-cam by a country mile" (that's ~ two kilometers! Hm, doesn't have the same ring to it, does it? well....by quite a bit! Darn tootin'! [that is ~Heavens to Betsy! as ya'll might say ], I dunno, it's great though! ). That’s way too much of a personal question for me to answer for you I’m afraid. I play a JodyJazz HR 8 on alto and a Selmer C** on sop though.

13:20 "The major version of the blues scale is the same notes as the minor blues scale but down a minor third." Don't you mean up a minor third? Going up three semitones from A you get a key starting with C, which is what's in your picture. "Going down a minor third" you'd get to F# which ain't there at all.

Yeh it’s just linguistics there David. You can see on screen that A minor and C major are equivalents.

Hey Jamie, cool video that inspired me for a topic in my book. The book is called 'Music Theory+' and is a very new, and might I say, revolutionary take on existing music theory; can I approach you in about 3 months when my book is finished and I want to get some feedback from people like you? Anyway, thank you very much! Hans J.C. Bakker

Please clarify: You say you can use the Cm blues scale and the Am blues scale, except start on the C. But these scales do not share the same notes. What am I missing? And when you say, the notes of major scale are same as minor blues scale but DOWN a minor third. Your example shows Am blues scale and C major blues scale. Isn't that going UP a minor third? (I'm told I'm quite smart, but not here, obviously.)

Can you share some tine stamps (0:00) for those comments please? Thanks. The a MINOR blues scale has the same notes as the C MAJOR blues scale, and the relative minor is always a minor third DOWN from the major. Hope I didn’t say a “typo” on the lesson?! Thanks.

@@GetYourSaxTogether At 13:22 you say, "the major version of the blues scale is the same notes as the minor blues scale but down a minor third." The corresponding graphic shows the C Major blues scale above the A Minor blues scale. But it looks like C is up a minor third from A, not down. So that confused me.
I was led to believe that minor blues scales are related. The Cm blues scale is related to the Am blues scale. Based on the 6th interval. So, once i know the relative I can also play that scale. In the example above, Am is the 6th interval from C. So on a C blues I can use the Am blues, starting on the C. What confuses me is both of these blues scales have very different notes.

@@pierrerabot7438 yeh, sorry, that was a mistake. I should have said the you go down a minor third from the major blues scale to get the minor, and vice verse. Well spotted, and thanks for pointing that out. 👍🏻

@@GetYourSaxTogether So I'm playing a Cm blues scale, I can also play an Am blues scale, but start on the C of that scale. C D Eb E G A

@@pierrerabot7438 Well, if the song is in C minor you can only really use the C minor blues scale. If the song is in C major you could use an A minor blues scale starting on C, OR, you could throw in a C minor blues scale as well if you use it sparingly.
