Thank you! Found a microwave on Marketplace for free, took my broken door off, put the new one on as you showed and voila...good as new, took five minutes, saved $$$. I love being able to reuse and not have to replace the whole unit due to one little thing!! THANK YOU!!!

Thank you!!!. Using your video and a few others I got the courage to try this. Replaced broken microwave door in a rental unit. Saved myself a lot of TIME and money. Bought it in Amazon for $70. I unplugged the old microwave, removed the damaged door and took it home with me so I could take my time to determine if I needed a specific part or the whole door. I could have replaced the frame only but for the price difference it was not worth the trouble of disassembling the old door so I bought the complete door and it was easy to install.

Thank you for sharing the awesome tips. One question: how to remove the inside glass of the door to access the grill in-between to clean it?

Great video. The unit is pretty similar to my Samsung built in. My inner panel is coming off. The unit worked for a bit but then started not heating slowly and then completely. I’m guessing this is a safety feature that the unit will not work unless there’s a complete seal? Hoping that’s the only issue, seems like the most obvious reason it stopped working. Thanks for the tips!

Awesome! thank you very much for showing me all i needed was a flathead screwdriver to gain access to the door. My issue was with the glass and ended up fixing it myself, but not without your help!! 👍🍺

I found this very useful and the Kenmore door appears to be identical to our Bosch microwave. My problem is I only need to replace the handle and after removing that initial cover piece the screws to change the handle were not visible with the glass fitting attached. How do I take the cover off the door so I can access the screws for the door. Thank you

I have a Kenmore microwave above an oven. The microwave has the black vent frame around it. The push button door latch broke so I can't open the microwave. There are no screws to remove the frame and I can't get anything behind the door to open it (like a thin spatula) because it's flush with the vent frame. Do you have any suggestions for how to open the microwave door so I can start the repair process?

Hey Rosie, In the past I have used partselect.com. You can enter “Kenmore” and the model number for you microwave and then they will show you the parts available. You should be able to buy a complete door or just the glass portion if you want to disassemble and reassemble the door with the new glass. Best of luck.

I ordered a clear piece of tempered glass for my GE microwave but now you can see the inner part of the door. It should be obscured by the tint or bubble effect at the top of the glass. It was cheap but not the correct replacement glass. Lesson learned.lol

You definitely took the easy way out and when I say that I had to replace the outer door trim and you need to pull the door, handle, inner frame, and the glass. What a pain in the a$$. You literally have to bend the plastic to fit the zero tolerance glass in which took several tries. I don’t know why but, the outer trim would not clip at the hinge side on two clips. This is a 18+ year old JVM1640 and not worth putting any more money into. The trim was 35.00 and that’s all folks. Good video, well spoken, well edited.

I watched your video on removing the inner trim from the microwave which is identical to mine. The inner frame has not been damaged in my range, but the interior glass was damaged and needs to be replaced. Once the inner frame is removed, how do you remove the glass and the microwave shield which should be one piece? I have ordered the part from Sears Parts Direct. Entire door assembly was out of stock ($226). Glass/shield piece ($114). How do you check for leaks, or do we need to after replacing the inner glass/shield?

    • @EverydayHomeRepairs
      @EverydayHomeRepairs  4 роки тому

Hey Betty, Go ahead and install the new glass and make sure everything aligns and snaps into place. I don't know of a full proof way to check for leaks but think it will be pretty apparent if things aren't lining up because the door will be hard to close and might not latch. Give it a try and let me know how it goes.

Great video, I appreciated it. However, blaming the tenant for a design flaw I think is poor form. The plastic backing holding the door is extremely flimsy. A single screw going through unreinforced plastic is responsible for the breakage, not a lot of cooking by a tenant. These things break with minimal use.

We have a new Kenmore brand microwave. The door is like hard to close and open, I guess because it's new, but it annoys me. So I file both latches to make it a little bit softer to close and open,
but I file it too much. Now the latch is not in contact with the switch inside. Do you have any remedy or solution without buying a new part/parts? Thank you and more power to your channel.

Replacing the whole microwave for $500 when the repairman is only $250? Still probably not a wise investment unless the microwave is old. And based on what I have seen in the past 5 years , with a GE microwave which one would expect to be quality... they just are not built to last. I could not believe the door had a plastic piece break out of the latch, and that the frame came loose like it did... at approx a year old, if that.

@@EverydayHomeRepairs Yeah, I also need to take apart the door to clear up inner condensation and film on screen. Your first steps are what I expected; it would be nice to see the full disassembly-as indicated in your video's diagram-before attempting it myself. I suspect it is merely a matter of another snap-fit prying procedure along the door periphery where those tab-like projections are, but it would have been nice to see.

uh.... most people who cook will use oil and heat to do it. Cooking with the amounts of heat required should not destroy the handle on the microwave. The door failing is not because of them, but because of the microwave being made flimsy. I cook all the time, and yea, I often use oil in my cooking, but that has nothing whatsoever to do with the microwave door breaking.
We rent, and our microwave had gone bad.,.. started acting weird, where if you punched in 2 minutes, it would try to run longer, or suddenly change the numbers you punched in. I saw it happen when no one was touching it. Would you fault the renters for cooking things that put off steam/moisture? That's what happens on a stove. People cook on them. They cook in water, they cook with oil. That's NORMAL behavior. It's what stoves are used for. People who make Microwaves designed to go above a stove are supposed to take that into consideration and design them to withstand moisture and any heat. Heat RISES.
That's the way it works. But I cook with oil and medium to medium high heat depending on what I am cooking all the time... and my handle never came off.
So the owners replaced the microwave. A YEAR in, and I use my microwave probably daily, maybe even multiple times a day - and I cook every day. Last night, as I said, only a year in, suddenly the frame on the inside of the door popped out on the bottom when I opened it, AND a piece of PLASTIC that they use inside where the door latches, broke and fell out. The previous microwave never had that happen, and it had been 4 years before he replaced it due to the weird electronic issues.
It's not my fault the frame came off . I use the microwave a lot. I cook a lot. But it's not my fault, nor the grease build up, the fault is FLIMSY parts. They use plastic because it's cheaper than metal, and God only knows how that frame is attached, but clearly it should not come off in a year simply because the person uses it . That's what it's for! And it should be designed to withstand heat, steam etc from the stove beneath it, and yes, grease buildup. Why you think Grease build up contributed to the door handle coming off is beyond me. That makes no sense. The handle came off because of the way it's made, not because someone was cooking with oil and heat beneath the microwave. The microwave handles on my microwave never came off in 4 years and I cook daily - often with oil and with med to med high heat.
You should not blame the renter when parts fail like that, or a door handle comes off. It's most likely a fault in the plastic, like with the part that came out of the door latch. Why they use cheap plastic in that instead of metal is just beyond me. It should be common sense that it will get a lot of use, and should be designed to last. But then again, maybe that's by design. I have seen the prices of parts for refrigerators, and it's the same for microwaves. Over a hundred dollars for a stupid plastic bin? SMH
$87 for a HANDLE? The entire Microwave costs like $500, and a door handle is $87??? (GE handle was at a website called Part Select) That's outrageous. The bin really ticked me off because they are VERY flimsy plastic. It doesn't take much for a refrigerator bin to break. One would think they would be designed to hold a decent amount of fruits and veggies, but if you actually put a decent amount in there, be very very careful when you open the drawer, or if you have to take it out (remove everything from the drawer before you remove it because it is flimsy and could easily break from the weight on the plastic.
Cooking with oil and "high heat" & microwave issues?
The only thing I can think of that 'might' result from cooking with oil a lot below the microwave, is the vent hood getting an oil buildup. I can't help but wonder whether you have even thought of that. Ours has a vent ductwork that leads to outside the apartment, but I can't see how it could be cleaned since it is a totally closed system except for a tiny vent on the outside of the apartment building. That's going to be a problem. My microwave is now leaking oil out of the holes inside the ceiling of the microwave - maintenance doesn't know what to do, so he was going to replace it. EVEN THOUGH he was the one to first suggest it could be an oil buildup in the ducts. He has no idea how to deal with that, and neither do I. Try a google for that, and all you get is restaurant hood cleaning. For restaurant hoods, they clean them from the roof, and they are big enough I believe that sometimes the people who do that for a living (my brother had a business doing that) can literally climb inside to clean them. They have to be cleaned or they can catch fire. But I don't think the people who started making vents to vent smoke and moisture outside ever considered that they would end up building up smoke and even grease inside the ducts.

HOOKS STICKING OUT THE DOOR IS A DUMB IDEA! I assume the designer had a warped sense of humor and enjoyed thinking of how many people, removing scalding liquid from the oven, will be splattered when the vessel catches on the hooks.

Thanks for your information/horror story. Tenants who cook with gallons of grease ON the appliances have either clearly missed the most basic concepts of cooking, in any ethnicity, or they were under the impression kitchens and related appliances are disposable, which could be a failure of communication, education, civility, health and safety, common sense, and/or self preservation. In any case, they need to be evicted and immediately returned to their parents, hovel, school, orphanage, foster home, rehab, shelter, or whatever cog in the proverbial wheel rushed them along to independent living in your unit, where they have really overshot the mark, and swam way beyond their depth.
These are ideal candidates for work farms and prison labor, if that. No war torn region would want them, going through multiple microwaves and grease by the gallon, who are these people? ?
They should come with warning labels. Even for those who enjoy domestic violence, there's no excuse for that stove top.
