  • With Inktober and all the other drawing challenges now upon us, it's worth taking a little time when we find it to go through our social media sites and purge the images that don't showcase our best work and to make room for new work we're about to present!

    • What to Do with Old Sk...
    Whether we're purging our closets, old sports gear, or even junk in the basement or attic, there's a lot of benefits from getting rid of stuff.
    • it can be given to help others who might need it more than us
    • it is liberating to release things we don't need
    • it opens the space to accept new items
    • it forces us to think with a fresh, clear mindset
    • and more!
    Come find out more in this discussion and share with me down below how you approach purging or, maybe, you think it's a bad idea! I'd love to hear!
    As always, thank you for your time watching! Stay well ~ Mark

    _The person who left a thumbs down for this video said I was terrible for deleting history. What do you think? Is purging your social media channels a sin? Is archiving work that looks inconsistent or not cohesive to the overall body a bad thing? What do you think? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this debate. Stay well and cheers!_ ~ Mark

      I delete stuff all the time, I have the original on my hard drive if I want to go back and look at it, but I do want my social media to represent my current self. This attracts clients that want to hire my current self not my past self. Always be growing!

      It's our history, we can't delete it cuz we're not machines xdd.. but I think we should decide when and how to share it publicly

      but you aren't deleting them , they are on your computer. Just unclogging your social media. Let's face it, people aren't going to scroll all the way down if there is too much stuff there

      I thought it was a horrible idea! That is until I heard your reasoning. You always make me think! I watch your channel as much for the commentary as I do for the art. 😉

      Thank you so much, Brian! I still have all the original work and digital copies backed up. I would never fully delete anything that I might want later. But, for Instagram or FB, I don't mind purging those to clean things up a bit. As for this year, well, it will be tricky. Time is limited these days, but I'm going to go for it. I hope you are well and busy as ever! I'll be checking out your newest work asap! Cheers! ~ Mark

    As a beginner the purpose of my Instagram is to show my progress. When I first started posting the goal was to post all of my art journey even if I didn't like what I produced. I've only been drawing since Nov. 29th 2019. I've spent about half of that time period in & out of the hospital so my progress has been much slower than I hoped for. I need to get over being so self conscious & get back to my original mission of posting everything. For me, its not about posting my best its about the journey & the bumps in the road I encountered as I strive to become the best artist that I possibly can.

    Very insightful, Mark! I would love a video where you talk about how those of us from from the other side of the page deal with not enough content vs. too much (you know, because you have all the time in the world). I'm crippled by the "... but, it's not perfect" voice in my head, so I don't post much of anything. I'm not a professional artist, so my career isn't dependent on what I present online. I always appreciate your take on the topics you cover because oftentimes it's like opening an encyclopedia, there's something there that I didn't think of. I'll be doing Inktober this year and I may even post something. Dare to dream! Looking forward to seeing your Inktober artwork!

      Thank you, Kelly R. Wilson! I will just say that the too little vs. too much discussion is deep. You're right, it's mainly abou those who are able to produce without the concern of time, whereas those of us who work full-time jobs have extremely limited access to pursue our personal creative endeavors. Deep stuff. As for the voice of perfection, I don't know many artists who don't have that rattling in their minds. The key is to remember that the horizon at the ocean may look like a perfect line across the sky, but it's actually not. it's curved. And that's how we should always approach our work, no matter what it may be - that perfection is simply not attainable, yet "close to" perfection is as good as it gets. I don't strive for perfection, so I accept flaws, mistakes, or imperfection as part of my style. Of course, that's just me. Thank you again! ~ Mark

    Congrats on your new job!
    I can feel the forward positivity in your voice. Purging can be hard because there’s decisions to be made about who you are now, and who you want to be. Growing means saying goodbye, and maybe grieving a little, the loss of who you were. Though it’s ‘only’ about virtual images here, this theme is repeated through life in other contexts. I think subconsciously, too, these decisions we make about change can disturb our natural inclinations against uncertainty. Anyways, I appreciate your videos’ inspiring thoughts. Don’t burden yourself too much though cuz I’m sure if you made them shorter or less frequent cuz of time constraints, we’d view them just same! Cheers.😎🌸

      Thank you, A Remedy Project! I appreciate your kind words! I like your perspective on goodbye means growth, growth means a bit of grief. It's very true in many aspects of life. Always appreciate your feedback and it's nice to pick up something like this on the journey. I'll hold onto that perspective. Thank you! ~ Mark

      @@MDCampbell being a consistent art UA-camr and nurse during COVID19 era I completely understand. One way I get through inktober is to start one month in advance and also each inktober I use different medium and objectives. I push myself to finish at least within 3 weeks so I film and edit for October, my medium was fine liner and my objective was quick character doodles. By the way I am finished with inktober. I am just enjoying my fellow art UA-camrs art style and objectives for this year's inktober. Maybe I can pick up couple hints and tricks. Stay Bless Friend.

    I really enjoyed this video and it inspired me to do some purging. This year especially, my style and media has kind of been all over the place due to more experimentation, so it was a good reminder to do some re-evaluation of the works I keep active on my Instagram account and portfolio. Thanks for the reminder!

    Great video as always Mark! You always give us something to think about. I have been thinking about purging on my Instagram lately, there are few odds and ends that I'm not sure fit with the overall look anymore. I haven't gotten around to doing it yet, but this video has given me more reason to do it.

      Knowing your work, you have such a great range of skills so it’s worth keeping a variety of pieces. But, for someone like me, I post a lot of junk that I think is fun at the moment. Then later, I look at it and say oh no… gotta go. Lol!! Thanks for checking this one out! I hope all is good on your end!!

      @@MDCampbell Lol, I do definitely like variety! I have a few of those posts too though, usually work in progress pics or things that aren't my best quality but I post it to be active. It's hard when you feel the pressure to always be posting to stay relevant. I have been well, I have been busy, but well. I try to get on here to catch up on the content that my favorite creators are putting out, but sometimes life gets in the way. I'm sure I have a lot that I have missed and will need to go back and check out! I hope you are doing well!

    When I thought of the title, I thought of last year's controversy. This year, I'm skipping Inktober due to the controversy, and I might come back once the dust is settled and the challenge is very fun and engaging. I'm following Doodlewash's prompt list instead.
    It's fine to remove some stuff. I do think I keep those for progress reasons. Some doodles and WIPs, I tend to post it in Story mode.

    • @MDCampbell
      @MDCampbell  2 роки тому +4

      Last year's controversy was an excellent example of how other people's negative drama, played out publicly, impacted thousands of people from the positive pursuit of their own creative spirit. It was a flat note that marred the entire experience, for all of us. Now, however, people have figured out that a drawing challenge is about _them_ and not the experience of others. But, sharing is not enough - commenting and exposing ourselves to the work of others is paramount to capture the full essence of the challenge and walk away with something tangible. No matter what challenge we take on. Thank you for commenting and I really appreciate your conversation! Cheers! ~ Mark

    I did this all the time back when I was posting videos and more IG posts--people would always ask, "Where did that vid go?" or "Where is that post now?" and I would be like...umm...I don't like them anymore so they've been duh-leeted! XD

      Thank for your time watching and commenting, Hajra! It's good to see you posting again and great to hear from you. I've missed you and your work! It's funny when someone has asked me where an image I posted went to. There's a full, long explanation, and then there's the quick, "it wasn't working for me anymore." I choose the latter. lol!! Stay well my friend! ~ Mark

    I dont use social media for art really. But if I did i would def do this on someplace like instagram . for now I use deviant art as a digital art history. everything goes there and is sorted by year. but something like instagram for advertising myself...yeah. I would purge that now and then.

    • @MDCampbell
      @MDCampbell  2 роки тому

      I agree. The whole marketing/social media billboard to advertise oneself is definitely a place to purge regularly. I don't actually do it enough, especially in other areas of my life. I recently purged my cabinets and it took an entire afternoon to sort through everything. Crazy, right? lol!! Thank you, Lady Oogy!

    I am not a fan of removing the pieces from the internet. I do image searches sometimes to try to find a piece that inspired me and all too often the piece is gone down some memory hole - as I can't find the source, I can't give credit. Why do I keep local copies of all the things that inspire me? Again, comes down to never being able to find them or the links being dead because people removed, moved, or archived the original sources. In my book, if you remove pieces from the internet don't get upset when you are not credited as the source of inspiration later on.

      @@MDCampbell I just find it frustrating to find where images came from .... Use my mega pool for inspiration at times and most stay in my private book but when they become more would be nice to give kudos for the inspiration.

    I like the idea of the purge so did that with my own Instagram account. Some of the posts just didn't have the significance now that they had at the time of posting. Do you delete art that you no longer like but had a lot of 'likes'?

    • @MDCampbell
      @MDCampbell  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you, Diane O. I only delete posts that I don't feel represent my work or myself in a way that reflects my current interests. Whether it has a lot of likes or views doesn't matter to me. It has to fit in as a whole. Not particularly with viewers, but for myself.
