  • It's that time of year again - INKTOBER! Whether you WANT to do Inktober or maybe you NEED to do Inktober, this is a friendly eye-opener to the quick benefits of doing any drawing challenge.
Now, no one says we "have" to do any kind of challenge; however, if we DO decide to do one, consider whether it's because we "want" to take on the challenge versus if we "need" to - and why? Here's some thoughts:
Why we might WANT to do a drawing challenge like Inktober?
    1. TO GET BETTER
    2. TO BE MORE CREATIVE
    3. TO GET BETTER WITH OUR TOOLS
    4. TO TRY SOMETHING NEW
    5. TO GET PEOPLE TO SEE & LIKE OUR WORK
Why we might NEED to do a drawing challenge like Inktober?
    1. TO BUILD OR RE-BUILD OUR CONFIDENCE
    2. TO ENGAGE OUR CREATIVITY
    3. TO CONNECT OR RE-CONNECT WITH OUR TOOLS
    4. TO CHALLENGE OURSELVES
    5. TO JOIN LIKEMINDED ARTSITS FOR CREATIVE FELLOWSHIP

Thank you Mark for the video. Trust your and yourself are well. Actually I usually do inktober a month early due to my nursing schedule i need to do it a month early and do my video walkthrough as well. Personally i use inktober as my art exam, i usually have objectives with skill that i want to improve upon and compare my inktober from previous years, to see how i improve. I really love your inktober videos. You usually give great tips and guidance. Thank you so much for this.

Thank you, my friend! I'm not following my own advice this year and "keeping it simple." I'm getting too complex with my arrangements, so I'm going to have to reel it back a bit. I'm exhausting myself! lol! Glad to hear you're finding the challenge to be challenging! I hope you are well! ~ Mark

A few years ago I drew everyday for two and a half years. I never did Inktober but drawing everyday was similar in experience, I think. I learned a lot and gained skill. And often had fun surprises. I love seeing what you come up with for inktober. It is really cohesive and well done. Thank you for the video. Best, Chris.

I have completed several ‘inktobers’ (I usually use my own prompts) so this year I’m working on 2! One of mythical creatures/monsters and one of my characters the Thumbles. I even made a zine about how to prepare for inktober - preparation is key!
It’s definitely my favourite time of the year.

I have tried multiple times to do inktober and always give up. Maybe this year. All your points are spot on

"You don't need to draw to survive". Are you sure about that? For creative people, creating something is as necessary as breathing. If you can't meditate, sometimes you can reach that state by walking, or knitting, or drawing, or needle felting or painting. If I were stuck in solitary confinement, cut off from the world, I think I'd NEED to have some kind of paper and writing implements. To write, draw, stay sane. I was deprived of all my tools and it's been impossible to replace them, so I'm starting from scratch. pencil, pen, paper, cheap colored pencils, add a little bit at a time. But I realized I do NEED it. You can create with cooking, baking, gardening too.

    • @MDCampbell
      @MDCampbell  2 роки тому +3

Yes, I'm pretty sure no one has ever expired because they couldn't draw. LOL! I get your point, of course, despite my whimsical comment. I know that for me, I'd definitely go a little wonky if I couldn't draw. And like you, I've had important gear stolen from me leaving me having to replace it, which in some cases took years (before the internet when you could only buy certain products out of state or country). Thank goodness for the internet, right? lol!

I saw you mention Inktober on Instagram a few days back, and it reminded me that it was indeed that time of year. Due to life, the universe and everything, I haven't done much drawing the last couple of years. I decided that I am going to give it a go again this year. I am ignoring the prompts, if I can just get a drawing a day done for a month I will consider it a major achievement. Also, looks like I am doing it really high tech this year, a ballpoint pen (no, actually I don't know what I did with my good pens right at the moment) and a dollar store sketchbook, but the point is to get myself in gear again, so ...
Thank you for the video, I need the additional bump right now.

Thank you Mark for this boost - always enjoy watching you create. This will be my 4th Inktober in a row... although this year it is going to be the most challenging ever for me. I waffled back and forth about even attempting it this year as I lost my husband to cancer suddenly in July. I have only picked up a pencil / brush twice since to do some very small and simple pieces. So I know I NEED to do this to return to my art. I also know he would want me to.

My own battle with a brain tumor puts me in a very sensitive place with people struggling with cancer. But, I'm a very lucky man. This is my first year participating. I had a small business that was costume related so aug to oct were my busiest months. I shut it down in January to spend more time on art and enjoy my life. I’m not going to put too much pressure on using the prompts, if one speaks to me I’ll use it. My goal is to dust off the dip pens and actually learn to use them. While it won’t be post worthy, any time spent with pen and sketchbook will be time well spent.

In august I was drawing in my sketchbook everyday and I miss that creativity. Also I want to feel all the spookiness of spooky season. The fact is that a man came up with a clever name for a drawing challenge, that's it. Whatever followed has nothing to do with me, my work, or participating in that cleverly named challenge. If someone wants controversy and getting pissy about someone they don't know, then that's their business. I have zero time to let that interfere with the covenant of my enjoyment in drawing and sharing with a community. Also, you may notice, I don't use the logo in my videos anymore. I support the challenge, but I also support the voices of those who took issue with the actions of the person who tried to profit from it. I get it. Cheers!

There was some controversy. I'm not sure if there was any plagiarizing in the book, because every book on how to draw is going to suggest the same basic techniques. I didn't like that it went from ink only, to every medium for that month. I don't sell art so I'm not sure how the copyright of the Inktober word changes things for those who do. IF they sell prints or stickers of art they created during october, does the creator get a cut of that? There are a LOT of other sets of prompts to use, or make up your own.

@@magnolia2 that's rude. I don't think the content is trash. Check insta and every other place. #Intkober is still a challenge many people participate in. When I search something to learn, I usually filter results by video posted in the year. So, making a new Inktober video every year is justified due to algorithms and new challenge participants.
No need to be rude. I hope you have a better day than when you posted the comment.

Sorry, this is not against you personally, however
I think Inktober is washed out and so very overrated and by now boring. Its always the same thing. It's time to do something else in the art community.
Besides why October? Just because someone decided to replace oct with ink?
That's no longer relevant. A lot of people I know of, of the you tube artists don't even participate anymore.
Ink is not reserved to October.
    Here are some suggestions:
Animal month, mamals, birds, reptiles, marsupials etc.
Fauna, different plant for one month.
Make your own list of interest for one month.
Or you may choose a different medium every month
    So many options.
But it's tireing to see only Inktober when you open you tube.

Did you bother to tell people the idea was started as fun then stolen by some douche who trademarked it and threatens to sue anyone who tries to sell their own art work using the inktober label? You are encouraging people to breach a copyright.

Why do people like you talk with such authority when they are completely wrong?
The idea of Inktober was started in 2009, 13 years ago, by Parker. It was a personal project to improve his traditional inking not created as a community event. After years of doing it himself others decided to join in. Just because others join in doesn't mean Parker gave up his rights to his creation. The logo and word mark have been copyrighted moment of their creation, trademarked after it has been used on commercially available products . That's the law. So no, it wasn't stolen because it is his creation. Try using the name or logos of other popular challenges like Mermay or March of Robots. Both of which are owned by a single artist as well.
Not a single person was ever sued by Parker for selling their art work. If you're so positive of this then provide an actual source, not online rumors and drama. What actually happened was people were selling merchandise with his inktober logo and or Inktober use a main title. Amazon through their copyright system sent take down notices to sellers. They had to get permission to sell items with the logo or name as a title on merchandise. Those people contacted Parker and were able to sell the things the produced. Without giving Parker any money.

      @HollyOak:
You can do inktober without going public and/or without connecting to the "official" inktober...you know that, right?

HollyOak - If someone trademarked it, then you are not pirating copyright. The two things are disconnected. For example, trademarks are forever, as long as they are maintained in commerce. Copyright eventually yields to public domain. BTW, if it has been being used by a group, it would be extremely difficult for anyone to establish trademark registration under US and most international law.
Anyone in creative arts really ought to learn the laws regarding copyright, trademark, and even something about patent.

Ink Well v.2 - Copyright is established at the moment of creation, yes. Trademark is not. Trademark requires time in use and eventual registration.

@@hollyingraham3980 Parker has been using the logo and word mark in commerce in since 2013. He self published a sketchbook titled Inktober that year. Before then he used it in smaller projects. Since then he has sold other books and products using both. Also has current and past deals with a companies selling inktober branded products. Parker had to register because people where starting to use his logo and word mark on commercially produced items.
People saying that Parker stole inktober, like the original poster, are completely wrong and misinformed. The logo and word mark didn't magically appear out of thin air. He created them, runs the official website, has promoted and ran the challenge for over a decade.

Thank you so much for being such a generous and incredible artist and teacher, sharing your knowledge and skills with us. and you are so right that creating art is like a meditation. it's a spiritual experience for me, although I am truly an awful artist, but I don't care. I just love the experience and using all kinds of tools, learning about art, experimenting...
I also agree this challenge is a good opportunity to create conceptual work, to tell a story. As a beginner, I am stressed out to make things look like things haha.
I also love, love your art!
