The Human brain is a complete invalid. It allows for mispunaounciation and makes you stutter at RANDOM with no regard to logic. The brain itself is the problem. The person is not scared.
maxedwill he is not a speaker, he is an engineer. He knows technical terms and difficult words. He has problems because he is translating everything to layman's terms in real time.
Why not start small. US president would be a good start, at least the White House would have someone in it that can thing beyond their own desires and bank balance.
There wouldn't be a President of Mars until it was necessary to have someone of that position on planet. Mars will likely be devoid of politicians (on planet at least) until it is inhabited by a few hundred thousand people. And even then a good number of those people will not have originated from the U.S.. But likely many other countries.
This is honestly one of the most inspiring presentations I have seen in my entire lifetime. You definitely already have accomplished your goal of giving purpouse and motivation to humanity! I am sure I am not the only one, when I say that you are my biggest Idol. Thank you Elon for all you have given to humanity
For those ragging on him for being nervous and stuttering; I was in there, there was 3500 people in the audience and it was being live streamed to millions around the world. Also this is basically the first official unveiling of the plan that his entire company has been working towards for the last 15 years. Pretty nerve-racking stuff.
realpoutine He presented this at the IAC (international astronautical congress) which is a big event for space fans because a lot of big updates comes from it. IAC is every year usually in September for a few days. This year on top of spacexs big plan Lockheed Martin released a mars plan, Australia is going to have a new space agency, rocketlab and blue origin with new customers for their rockets and more. Every year this event is in a different country/city where last year it was in Mexico and this year it was in Australia. I started keeping track of this since last year so I recommend being hype for every year ^.^
@@raphaelindm18 agreed! Struggle creates strength. If he had unlimited funds it would likely make Elon & SpaceX lazy. Elon excels because he pushes the envelope and takes chances. If he were showered with money, I fear that SpaceX would just become another Boeing.
@@xenowhite Really? Because it seems to me that Elon's plate is already full. Tesla, SpaceX, the battery company, the Boring company, seeing as Elon likes to retain his own hand in each endeavor, how much more do you think he add add without forgoing his personal control, something he openly regrets having done with Tesla? No amount of money is going to buy him more time in a day, a week, a month or a year. It may gain him a few years more in his dotage , but nothing truly useful as men like Musk measure things. As for others, Boeing has billions, and they suck. Do you think that they'd do more if they had more too?
They're restricted to launch in every 2 year time window but they still can send multiple ships as they build more meaning more people will go every couple years. Firstly, they need people with skills to build & setup the base on Mars, so those will be first in line, so if you have the reqd. skills, you're golden, if not, there's still plenty time to acquire them if you're a student. Next will probably be millionaires & scientists/government representatives (NASA will probably send people to setup a satellite launch & build station on Mars). I guess commoners could go after 2040 but only those who'll be able to pass the fitness test and with the right acumen will be prioritized according to technical necessity at the time.
This is a moment in history that will never be forgotten. With the first launch of the bfr humanity pushes past the bounds of earth permanently. Remember this moment. The next 20-30 years mark the end of terrestrial bound humanity.
Earth life will not end for human. That ticket out of here won't be for everyone man. Only the Elites will be granted a new beginning. Shit, there's a change human will become some type of slave to post-human. I'm excited though. It feels right to go to other planets now. As we understand the cosmos.. actual exploration is a fitting step.
sǝᴉʇᴉlᴉqᴉsuǝɥǝɹdɯoɔuᴉ the point of my comment is just to point out humanity will no longer have to stay on the planet, and point out that people will start to be born off of earth so the terrestrial bounds will be broken and we won't need to come back to the planet for everything.
Bah, I don't really care if *I* don't get to go, just that *someone* goes - with a lot of other people.* And really, if we're sending people to set up a city in the stars, we should be sending the best of the best... ...and that's what "Elite" means. *I would totally go in a heartbeat, though!
Because will be *ISK* "Inter Stelar Kredit" true? (dont confuse with ISK from "EVE Online" or ISK from "fiat money of that north country Iceland i think it is")
You guys who love Elon but hate Bitcoin realise that PayPal (which Elon was involved in creating) was more like Bitcoin than a Bank at the beginning and got regulated into what it is now. Bitcoin's protocol cannot be regulated so it doesn't have the centralised problem PayPal had.
People commenting on how nervous he is don't seem to understand the position he is in. With TESLA he is pretty well successful at this point, and all of his speeches are just publicity, with very little hanging on them being convincing or good. With his other companies, they are so relatively small, and marketably uninteresting, that investors don't really care about PR. The problem he faces with Space-X is every single time he takes the stage investors watch him like a hawk for any gaffes, or any slips, admissions, or flaws in his company direction or plan. This is hands down his baby, and literally the only thing he is 100% incapable of funding 'fully' independantly. That is to say he has major reliance on investors, PR, long term stragey, and an extremely successful product. People are fickle, if he slips up, his dream slips away, and I think it's safe to say this is the company, and the mission, he cares about more than any of his other companies. TESLA is something he cares about a lot, but even though it means a lot to him, that's an effort on a failing front to 'save earth' from itself, getting to Mars is in his eyes the real mission that 'saves humanity'. Anyone who listens to his other interviews knows the passion he has, how much he actually cares about space, what astronaughts before him did, how much he cares about humanity and it's livelihood, and also how hurt he often is by being mischaracterized, misjudged, and underestimated. He's a great man under absolutely immense amounts of pressure, and has anxiety to boot, but knows his face brings recognition that helps him, even though these public speeches are probably not his favorite thing in the world to do. Would be awesome to meet him in person without all the cameras and pressure.
I'd assume there's resources up there to be exploited or major scientific questions to be answered otherwise Spacex (And anyone else for that matter) wouldn't bother.
Actually there are a great many things that could be done on the moon. Mining is just one of those. Low G manufacturing (large heavy spaceships or whatever else you can imagine), research facilities, astronomical observation, Tourism, and any number of other possibilities. Dangerous projects might be advantageous to have on the moon. I could easily imagine the moon becoming heavily industrialized, especially with no atmosphere or ecology to screw up. Also large heavily shielded ships would be easier to manufacture and launch on the moon. So you would need the various supporting industries for that. Metallurgical industries would be needed in conjunction with the mining and ship manufacturing. Not to mention other support services. Soon you'd have a thriving community on the moon. By the by, there is a way around the problem of extended microgravity. Think of those gravitating rides at fairs and parks. Combine the low gravity of the moon with centrifugal force, and you have simulated Earth strength gravity. Entire buildings could be shaped like rings or if you want to get ambitious even an entire city could be built on a rotating inclined platform. The same could work on Mars or any other low gravity body.
I heard astronaut Mike Massamino on Startalk Radio saying that they spend about 2 hours per day exercising to prevent micro-grav atrophy. In that case, you'd only have to centrifuge the personal quarters section, and you'd get plenty of workout while sleeping, eating, sitting at your desk, etc automatically. Then the rest of the base/city could be in local low-g to make the workday easier or play low-g games. Seems like an easy fix.
Kingstoler - That's an old video, I've watched it and I didn't believe in the Hyperloop back then but now they've actually tested it and it worked! Well a small one that is but I think it still has some potential.
Not long ago, within the last century or one lifetime, it was a challenge to build a 30 story building... Now we're launching it to space reaching hypersonic velocity... then landing it back on the ground... That's a BFR!!!
Elon is truly Henry Ford of our time. Making new form of transport affordable. Cannot wait take BFR in 10 years. I think as long as the ticket will be the same as the first class flights, there will be enough demand to make it commercially viable business. And it will get cheaper as time goes.
BFR earth to earth for passengers isn’t happening until 2050 at the Least more likely 2070 honestly because the BFR will need to launch millions of times and prove absolute reliability and low risk to loss of life. One failure in 100,000 is probably a minimum for earth to earth passenger travel and even that is far more dangerous than planes. Why would people choose a much more dangerous form of travel over a proven mode of travel that is doing billions of flights proven it’s upmost reliability.
just look up the longest version of Elon's speech at IAC 2016. For best efficiency of writhing in disdain thoroughly rewatch the presentation itself, enjoying every bit of enthusiasm and well-deserved pride of Elon's. And then - cringe. All sorts of stupid questions Elon'd already answered in great detail before and some other moments.
I loved when he paused in awe of what he was talking about. You could tell he cares so deeply about this project. "It's, quite captivating... isn't it?"
I don't think the earth mars travel will develop that much till 2040. Her parents are not going to be at home for 7 months . It will take till 2100 or even more time to discover a fuel and technology to travel nearly at light speed tbh to reach mars in quickly
You're a visionary, Mr Musk. An interplanetary Space Ship is way cooler than an iPhone! I wonder what flat-earthers will say when rocket powered flights around Earth become a thing.
You where proven absolutely right that a Interplanetary Spacecraft is way cooler than a iPhone recently by the SN8 High Altitude Test Flight. When the Spaceship did it's Falling Flip before Landing, words can not describe how Epic seeing this is. It's as if the Spaceship was Hacking Reality's Physics Engine (Which is probably why the SN8 Spacecraft was Almost Immediately Perma-banned afterwards😂 )
Wow this is amazing, and truly visionary. I have been following SpaceX since its early beginnings before2003 and I've always admired Elon for dreaming big and ignoring the critics and the naysayers. Space X is the new evolutionary company in the space industry and it didn't come from nowhere, they're building on decades of work by governments around the world. This is not magic, this is problem solving through engineering. It's analogous to internet (gvt developed, and entrepreneurs created the world we know today). With a bit of vision it is clear that this is early development of a whole new industry: rapid transportation of goods and people around the globe, mining space resources (there are asteroids worth trillions because various metal contents etc), servicing space resources (ISS and various satellites etc), removing debris from space, launching satellites of various sizes or multiple at once, providing access to the moon/mars/others, and you could go on and on. This will not happen overnight but it will happen, there will be setbacks and the likes but nothing that truly matters is ever easy. The likes of Lockheed, Boeing, Northrop, know whats coming, but like any other corporate behemoths they can only grow by acquisition or slow innovation as we saw recently Orbital ATK being acquired by Northrop. If you haven't noticed yet, Moore's law applies to technological progress as well, so some form of this vision is going to be a reality over the next decades. With every vision Elon inspires others to innovate and engineer his visions to reality and the same applies to Space X.
Technology developed for the space program has generated enormous wealth with spin off technology. The lunar program was the single most profitable R&D investment ever made. Elon Musk's one more thing moment at the end beats Steve Job's famous iphone announcement by orders of magnitude (btw. this thing can get you anywhere on earth in under an hour; you know just saying). It's ridiculous and a massively appealing concept at the same time. And arguably the iphone is what boosted Apple's value into the 1 trillion range. That thing started out with Jobs going like "why the hell not; we basically have everything we need to do it". Seriously, there's so many ways to monetize this stuff that it's frankly mind boggling nobody else is doing this. Reusable rockets change the game completely. This would be stupid if the only goal was to go to Mars. But it isn't. It's that and everything else this thing can do. Building a Lunar or Mars base just because we can and because the technology needed to build that is going to be insanely valuable is a no brainer for somebody like Elon Musk. Yes it's risky from a financial point of view but if you can pull it off it's also highly rewarding. IMHO it might actually be a lot less risky than a lot of relatively small investments in bullshit startups that collectively will cost a lot more and earn far less. There are only so many Apples, Facebooks and Googles people are going to be able to build with investment money; which is a tiny fraction of overall investments. And Musk is basically announcing that he's doing this with SpaceX revenue. I imagine he might convince a few investors to bank in but basically he's covered the cost already (assuming his calculations are ballpark accurate). This stuff is happening. Worst case SpaceX fails and goes bankrupt and somebody else does something with the technology it produced. So the absolute worst case is that we end up with an enormous amount of extremely valuable technology, experience, and knowledge without getting to Mars in the next decade. The best case is that this thing works as advertised somewhere in the next decade. Anywhere in between would be enormous progress regardless.
I thought when NASA downsized, we wouldn’t leave our solar system in my lifetime. When I saw Space X launch their rockets into space. My hope was renewed. Thank you Space X and Mr. Musk. Go get em!
Leaving the solar system? If there isn’t some huge physical/technological breakthrough in terms of near light speed travel than we will never leave this solar system (Not even speaking of only our lifetime but ever).
We may never solve the speed issue, but there are other ways around it. For instance, if we really have a presence in our solar system, we can mine the asteroid belt and build megastructures, such as a self-sustained multi generation arch. Such a vessel could spend many generations traveling to other stars. Furthermore, we may well be close to solving the mortality issue. If you don't have a natural limit to your lifespan, it's feasible to spend a couple thousand years traveling to say Proxima Centauri, with enough conviction and resources.
People complaining about his speaking, yet this is such a powerful speech. It's in fact great style for the type of content he's presenting. No marketing bs. Facts, sprinkled with nervousness and excitement. As it should be.
I'm going to be very honest here. Elon is horrible at presenting. Stuttering, not the greatest charisma etc. And before you start hating, this is a positive comment. Because even though Elon is not the best in presenting, he still does it. That's why I respect him so much. Many would say: "Nah that's not for me, I'll let somebody else say those things" but Elon doesn't, he faces his struggles and tries to learn from doing so. Thank you Elon.
True but I'm not talking about today. Elon Musk made himself the 'face' of SpaceX. If he would've let somebody else present from the beginning, people would've seen that person as the face of SpaceX and Elon Musk could've just stayed in the office.
In this era we should all associate charisma and likeability with hidden agendas and duplicity. I find his nervousness to be charming because he comes off like a real guy, not some lab-derived walking advertisement for himself like the average politician.
My key takeaways from this. 1. We're stockpiling F9 and F9H units, then we're going to bet the company on the BFR. 2. The BFR will be same-day reusable and cheaper to fly than any orbital rocket to date. 3. We'll be able to launch bigger payloads than the space shuttle could, and heavier than the Saturn V could. 4. We're aiming for a one-way autonomous Mars mission in 2022. 5. The heatshield does not ablate (wear) significantly for Earth re-entry. 6. We're not afraid to dream.
yeah that's why i made my comment. these spaceX fans don't seem to have a true appreciation of the dangerous history of flight testing, or they would've audibly gasped at Musk making an asshole joke heh.
I like how the engines described here in this aspirational video, which could be anything they could come up with in their wildest dreams, are *worse* than the ones that they actually built for them to fly.
"is 2017 we should have a lunar base now, what is going on?" Instead of lunar base we have lunatics claim the earth is flat and climate change isn't real.
Elon is so bad at presenting things, but I have to say he has the ability to chain me into the things he says. He stutters and his charisma isn't the best, but I could listen to him for ages. He truly is a genius!
People have been talking about this stuff for years and then laying out all the excuses; its fiscally impossible, politically impossible, technically impossible etc etc. I can honestly say with everything that's been happening in the world I had lost all hope. The first time I saw the tests of the falcon's failing, I thought that's never going to work; this guy has seen too many Thunderbird's episode but then it nearly made it. Then he pulled it off and I sat up and took notice. When he said last year his goal was Mars I was amazed when he said within 10 years. This presentation just restored my hope for the future; I have a tear in my eye. Governments don't drive society, individuals drive society and this guy just proved that. I cannot wait for 2022.
I'm so glad to hear that - just don't get disillusioned if he doesn't make 2022. Or 2024. Real life has a way of disagreeing with Elon's stated timelines (SpaceX were supposed to be launching people in Dragon 2 last year!), but he never gives up. Super optimistic timelines motivate smart people who want to see this happen soon to work as hard as possible to make it real. They may not actually meet these deadlines, but I have a lot of faith that they will achieve the goals, even if it takes a few more years.
This guy has succeeded where everyone else said he would fail and mocked him. If he says he's going to do something and that it's possible, I believe him. It may not be in 2022, but it won't be much later than that.
I absolutely admire this guy. I can only imagine how much he had to go through to be there on that stage. Sure, he isn't a born showman, but his stammering isn't taking away any of his confidence.
26:40 The brilliant quote "and often I'll be told 'but you could get more payload if you made it expendable'. I said 'yes, but you could also get more payload from an aircraft if you got rid of the landing gear and the flaps... and just parachuted out when you got to your destination." The second amazing bit is 25:30 when he compares *buying* a single engine turboprop plane (which is like current single-use rockets) to *chartering* a 747 plane (which is like having a fully reusable BFR). It's just a brilliant demonstration of the massive cost difference between single-use and reusable.
My theory is that it's not nervousness or a brain disorder. IMHO he's constantly trying to convey all this ideas and plans in the highest level of detail possible. The level he works at on a daily basis. He's however smart enough to be aware that he has to translate/reduce all the technical details for the greater public. The stuttering is his brain trying to do this translation in real-time so to speak. :-) Put differently: his internal data stream is too large to convey with words in a summarized manner :P
trashmail8 yea that's possible, but that also means he's kind of a bad presenter since that kind of stuff should've been done beforehand not on stage...
There was a time where Airplanes were dangerous and nobody saw it as reliable transportation. Of course the naysayers were the Train and Ship industry. The future looks bright. What a time to be alive.
This is IT. This is such a smart move on so many levels. Only sonic booms at take-off and landing, significant advantage over traditional supersonic flight. And look at the competition. Virgin Galactic and Blue Origin take you to space and back after minutes of floating around. So instead of A to B, from A halfway to B and back. Pointless endeavour. This removes their initial business model. It also eats away at Boeing and the Airbus group like crazy of course. Arianne Space is not even looking at reusability so they will be gone in 5-10 years. Multi-mission capable, even cleaning up space debris. SpaceX just handed itself a monopoly with 1 vehicle, giving it enormous economies of scale and by extention, an extremely bright future, including Mars missions. The economics of this are really sound, which was not the case with first design of Interplanetary Transport System. Go SpaceX and go Elon!
You mean his personal safety or something else? Because spaceX has been lobbying quite heavily. Elon is well connected in DC cross-party and has security clearance + shitload of bodyguards. And he's been challenging the fossil fuel industry for years (which is far larger) without security problems.
It's ridiculously loud at the launch site though. Also, you might hear a sonic boom below the area where it reenters, which would be a good 600 km of affected area.
My thoughts exactly. Of course, it would be cool to travel those huge distances in such a short amount of time but the environmental impact will be drastic compared to our current technology (airplanes like the A380). I'm certain Elon Musk is aware of that but this could be some additional business to finance the Mars (and Moon) ambitions SpaceX has. But I might be wrong, let's see what SpaceX will publish regarding this issue in the future.
Does anyone feel that Elon , when talking of the 4th flight of Space X , that was actually successful, he almost start tearing up ? That must have been a hell of a moment .
Mike Coman that flight was, under no uncertain terms, life or death for the company. If flight 4 had failed, no NASA contract, no falcon 9, no Dragon, nothing.
Dude, I was almost tearing up when he said that. The future of humanity might have been decided in that very moment. If that doesn't make you emotional you're not human.
As a former SpaceX employee who joined SpaceX after their fourth Falcon 1 launch and before the maiden flight of the Falcon 9, the company and Elon were on a high. He threw a bunch of parties for the employees after the maiden launch of Falcon 9 and the successful test of the Dragon docking.
Musk is a joke, he's depending on the masses to finance his pipe dreams. Establishing colonies on Mars will do nothing for humanity, it will just be a drain on resources and will result in failure because Mars is ridiculously hostile to human life.
He's so genuine. It's really hard to not to get really excited. He may not be bombastic, but you can feel his passion when he talks about the future of SpaceX
SpaceX is doing amazing things. The engineers are pushing humanity forward, while the politics keep us back. I hope SpaceX will figure out how to make their space ships more stable at landing. The long rocket body is not stable enough for passengers, but they will figure it out soonish. Maybe, they will figure out a rocket OR space ship, that can land and balance much better than a long cylinder.
It is much less efficient to launch wide objects. Stick your hand out the window on the highway. Make a fist. Then flatten your hand. Different, yea? For the speed and size of of a rocket, it's much more intense.
A well programmed robot can balance a long stick just fine. But it doesn't matter--you guys go on thinking you're more clever than those people who build those rockets.
what i want to say is that it is much easier to balance long stick than short stick if you try try with your hand. Didnt you play as a kid who will balance longer?
We need to get off this planet. Not for profit or for policy, but for the future. For our grandchildren and then their grandchildren as well. Our story started on Earth but we can't let it finish here.
We need to get off this planet, and also preserve this planet. We should think about making the solar system our home instead of earth, but that doesn't mean we should let earth die
No point going to mars , jack all minerals there for us to survive one , we won’t be able and settle colonies big enough by the time our grand and great grandchildren are here
You really can see that he is not a good public speaker, nor does he like it. And still he kicks his own ass into doing it, because he wants to be one that can. I call that personal discipline. Worth admiration, even if i do not agree with half his projects.
I can't speak for Ae Norist, but I can tell you what i disagree with. First of all, there is no point in this rocket. It's too big for cargo, there is no future in crewed space exploration (on chemical engines) and there is a reason concord didn't take off. And second - I disagree with the concept of Tesla - Li-Ion battery is a dead end of the energy storage technologies, it's too heavy for the stored energy, too dangerous, requires rare elements and harmful to the environment even at it's theoretical limit. Those batteries will never compare to the liquid fuel we'll be successfully using for centuries now, and if the only downside is carbon emissions, then why don't we just recycle CO2 into the liquid fuel, effectively storing the green energy? Such a "battery" is highly stable and effective because you only need half of the chemicals onboard and discard the used up material as you go. Nothing will need to be thrown away, infrastructure is already set up, and even airplanes will be green. And you can still have electric cars with fuel cells. You can give me more projects of his, so far I disagree with all I know.
I can't weigh in much. Nor do I want to start a discussion on UA-cam. But I can assure you, that the concord did in fact, and quite literally take off.
This is incredible, not only is he the first visionary to successfully use his equity to create a potentially valuable company that could propel society into space; he's also the only wealthy individual who wakes up every day and realizes that there could be more for planet Earth than what we've created here and try to fix all the problems here. Bravo. I hope this is the beginning of a new future beyond the confines of our planet and a spark to a new paradigm of humanity
These will be the first manned ships to sail the interplanetary seas. I imagine the first one to land on Mars could end up staying there as a monument for centuries to come. The first great wonder of the new new world.
+Kevin Becker It wasn't clear from the presentation if the first unmanned ones are going to self-unload their cargo and leave, or if they're gonna sit around for 2 years waiting for humans to unload and setup the equipment. If they sit around for 2 years they might still be useable, but maybe not.
9Mystere9 I'd imagine they wait for people to come and unload them, I highly doubt they will be damaged much by sitting around, mars is much more forgiving with weathering then earth given the low pressured and lack of rain. Also this thing is ment to survive reentry so I doubt it would be hurt much, maybe just higher refreshing costs when it gets back
It's crazy coming back to this in 2021, now Spacex is test flying Starship, has sent man into space, and in 2 weeks will refly a capsule and rocket on a crewed mission.
"Chief Designer" is Elon's best and most accurate title. This is a breathtaking and convincing roadmap. However, some of the final bits must be considered as a demonstration of what is possible, what horizons open up, rather than what will, or should, happen. In particular, there is no need to travel half way around the world in half an hour, when it can already be done in a day. The BFR is the 747 of space, not the SST/Concorde/Tu-144 of the 21st century. Furthermore, sheer environmental disturbance (e.g. engine noise, sonic booms, exhaust plumes, blowback and danger of explosion) would place launch/landing pads far away from any habitation, not just on Earth but on the Moon and Mars, too. The pads would need to be shielded and paved on the Moon and Mars to avoid exhaust-driven material from hitting installations on the ground as ships land and take off. (PS: BFR will generate the mother-of-all-sonic booms on return to the pad on Earth. The idea of returning to the launch pad itself makes perfect sense, and already Falcon 9 is hitting its target within a metre or two, even on moving, heaving barges. By the time of BFR, that accuracy could be a few centimetres, and on the launch pad the blowback will be directed away nicely from the delicate engine section.)
awuma I don't know, rapid planetary transit could be incredible useful for cargo and military purposes. You can probably fit around 500 people in each flight(strip out all the cabins and replace them with rows and rows of seats), in theory if they can fill every seat a ticket would be about the same as standard international flight. It would essentially be cheap space tourism with the bonus of getting to where ever you wanna go in 2-3 hours (that's including all the set up time to get to the rocket's launch pad in the middle of the ocean).
"Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men's blood and probably themselves will not be realized. Make big plans; aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble, logical diagram once recorded will never die, but long after we are gone be a living thing, asserting itself with ever-growing insistency. Remember that our sons and our grandsons are going to do things that would stagger us. Let your watchword be order and your beacon beauty." - Burnham 1907
I admire Elon as it's fairly obvious (and from previous talks) that he doesn't enjoy speaking in front of crowds, but the fact that he does it shows his passion for his work
Elon's stuttering doesn't bother me at all. For the love of Godspeed, listen to what he has to say instead of focusing on how he is saying it. If Elon had a slogan, this would be it: "Revolutionizing entire industries, one keynote at a time"
Often when Musk speak, I turn on 1.25x speed, then it gets perfect. Love you Elon for the human you are and if I could, I would do the same as you! You will bring Humanity to its greatness!
Glad to see someone who still has faith in humanity and the future. Unfortunately, I can think of a few greedy self-serving industries that don't want this to succeed and will engage in corporate espionage and sabotage. But then again if we don't dream and strive for a better future then what is the point. #RoundTheWorldInOneHour
A lot of the worlds most rich are alright, like Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates. Definitely not enough capitalist collective success minded people out there though.
If you think Elon is not motivated by money. Looks like you are idealising him and it's silly because pretty much everyone is flawed. If you knew how Elon took over Tesla for instance, you would have a more realistic vision of him. Don't get me wrong he is accomplishing great and good things ... But he is just an homo sapiens, an animal like you and I.
"It's 2017, we should have a lunar base by now. What the hell is going on?"
My favorite Elon comment by far.
When did he say that?
Spyfly5
33:00
Yeah me too
There is already a base on moon. Just all keep top secret. So hard to realize?
There is no base on Moon.
I hope to god that these timelines are met, this is one of the few sparks of light and of a possible future that is actually worth living in.
Couldn't agree more, mate.
Well, spaceX doesn't have a great track record on that, I guess it will be delayed at least 2 years, unfortunately
Well Elon isn't great with deadlines
Pedro Cardoso that's still better than the 2040 timeline Nasa had given

Yes, also Tesla and Hyperloop XD

his poor public speaking makes him a more believable character. i believe in Elon's vision
The Grapist Yep. His stutter makes him appear more human

many of the smartest people get nervous around public, and they get a hard time explaining what they know to the public
The Human brain is a complete invalid. It allows for mispunaounciation and makes you stutter at RANDOM with no regard to logic. The brain itself is the problem. The person is not scared.
😂
The fact that he's a terrible public speaker makes me trust him a lot more
Oh, at this point, his PR staff totally knows that
quintessential example of "actions speak louder than words"
Foreal haha he seems like such a normal person, he just happens to be a fucking genius
I enjoy watching him speak. Such a refreshing change from phoniness and predictability.
maxedwill he is not a speaker, he is an engineer. He knows technical terms and difficult words. He has problems because he is translating everything to layman's terms in real time.
12:30 fourth and final launch was a success. "Fate liked us that day." Our future could have possibly been decided that day.

There have probably been thousands of such occurrences over the millennia. We only know about the ones which succeeded.

I love how Elon is so awkward but passionate
I love you, stranger!
This how we know he actually believes what he says.
I start the day by reading the news and get depressed. Then i usually head over to the SpaceX or Tesla or Hyperloop websites for a positive boost.
Yess samee
Well I don't read the news but I do watch or read space stuff to up my mood 🙂
Maybe don’t read the news?
True
If only you knew what the next 20 would be like
Elon Musk has my vote for first President of Mars
TheRayRayGGG you have to be born on Mars for that
He doesn't have my vote. The stress of that job would be immense. We need his brain focused on getting to Titan after mars.
Why not start small. US president would be a good start, at least the White House would have someone in it that can thing beyond their own desires and bank balance.
We will build a SPACE WALL! And Phobos inhabitans will pay for it.
Yeah, he's definitely my biggest idol as well! I have complete confidence that he can do this! Such an amazing person!
For those ragging on him for being nervous and stuttering; I was in there, there was 3500 people in the audience and it was being live streamed to millions around the world. Also this is basically the first official unveiling of the plan that his entire company has been working towards for the last 15 years. Pretty nerve-racking stuff.
Well, second, really.
He always talked like this tho
What was the vibe like in there
realpoutine He presented this at the IAC (international astronautical congress) which is a big event for space fans because a lot of big updates comes from it. I started keeping track of this since last year so I recommend being hype for every year ^.^
On top of that, he had a pretty shitty person operating the slideshow.
This guys is amazing. Truly 1000s of years from now in another star system, humanity going to look back at this guy as the One.
He's done so much with less money than NASA and other space companies. Imagine if he had infinite money
Mr Hard Apple im a bit late but i don’t think he would be the same with unlimited money
@@raphaelindm18 agreed! Struggle creates strength. If he had unlimited funds it would likely make Elon & SpaceX lazy. Elon excels because he pushes the envelope and takes chances. If he were showered with money, I fear that SpaceX would just become another Boeing.
@@frankmueller2781 Wrong, if he had more money he would do more things at the same time. Not everyone works same and has the same mindset.

I want to go when I'm 70. I have the financial plan for that. Need to convince my wife tho
I guess commoners could go after 2040 but only those who'll be able to pass the fitness test and with the right acumen will be prioritized according to technical necessity at the time.
as elon said those will go who can afford a ticket
Bah, I don't really care if *I* don't get to go, just that *someone* goes - with a lot of other people.*
And really, if we're sending people to set up a city in the stars, we should be sending the best of the best...
...and that's what "Elite" means.
*I would totally go in a heartbeat, though!

thanks man, my day is officially better after reading this
I'm going to have to borrow this phrase.
Genius! Very well said.

Could a moon base become a hub for any particular industry? Would be have our major aerospace engineering facilities there?
I'd assume there's resources up there to be exploited or major scientific questions to be answered otherwise Spacex (And anyone else for that matter) wouldn't bother.
Basically, Moon is huge chunk of iron, so metallurgy can be developed for sure.
Tibees if we ever develop working fusion reactors it has a shit ton of helium 3 in its soil.
Elon simply gets shit done. A real inspiring hero to me. The only human I am fan of.

@@pd.dataframe2833 He’s right though, nobody ever thought an iPhone was cooler than a spacecraft. Plus his comment was over 2 years old
You where proven absolutely right that a Interplanetary Spacecraft is way cooler than a iPhone recently by the SN8 High Altitude Test Flight.
"We should have a lunar base by now. It's 2017. What the hell's going on?"" - Elon Musk
Ivan Fenis
Only time an "It's the current year" argument hasn't ticked me off!
current year intensifies
All your base are belong to us
We'll just roll back all of our calendars to 1999 once we've completed our first moon base
I feel his passion. Thanks elon!

I thought when NASA downsized, we wouldn’t leave our solar system in my lifetime. When I saw Space X launch their rockets into space. My hope was renewed. Thank you Space X and Mr. Musk. Go get em!
Highly doubt we will leave he solar system in our lifetime, but we can do incredible things within our solar system by itself
Leaving the solar system? If there isn’t some huge physical/technological breakthrough in terms of near light speed travel than we will never leave this solar system (Not even speaking of only our lifetime but ever).
I think he may have meant going to another planet, leaving Earth and going to Mars in this case.
Marius ah ok. If that’s the case then it’s more than likely.(depending on how you define lifetime.)
He's having trouble expressing his genius.

If it has been anyone else it would not have any kind of impact.
This presentation had to be given by Elon Musk. He's the CEO of SpaceX.
True but I'm not talking about today. Elon Musk made himself the 'face' of SpaceX. If he would've let somebody else present from the beginning, people would've seen that person as the face of SpaceX and Elon Musk could've just stayed in the office.
Yes, he's hard to listen to yet the topic is so interesting.
In this era we should all associate charisma and likeability with hidden agendas and duplicity. I find his nervousness to be charming because he comes off like a real guy, not some lab-derived walking advertisement for himself like the average politician.
Robbe Nagel is the stuttering a disorder? Or is he just really shy?

My key takeaways from this.
1. We're stockpiling F9 and F9H units, then we're going to bet the company on the BFR.
2. The BFR will be same-day reusable and cheaper to fly than any orbital rocket to date.
3. We'll be able to launch bigger payloads than the space shuttle could, and heavier than the Saturn V could.
4. We're aiming for a one-way autonomous Mars mission in 2022.
5. The heatshield does not ablate (wear) significantly for Earth re-entry.
6. We're not afraid to dream.
Elizabeth Greene
7. Travel anywhere on the planet in less than 30 minutes.
Aside from that, you pretty much covered it... Oh w8. Moon Colony too!

Elon is so bad at presenting things, but I have to say he has the ability to chain me into the things he says. He stutters and his charisma isn't the best, but I could listen to him for ages. He truly is a genius!
Actually despite the stutter, he made an exceptional presentation in my opinion
Stuart Coutts *physically
J-HOPE AKA THE ONE WHO HAD NO LINES IN SPRING DAY No, it's fiscally.
They may not actually meet these deadlines, but I have a lot of faith that they will achieve the goals, even if it takes a few more years.
governments fill their bellies.
This guy has succeeded where everyone else said he would fail and mocked him. If he says he's going to do something and that it's possible, I believe him. It may not be in 2022, but it won't be much later than that.
Finally something to hope for in my boring life.
Jiajian Wu CGI!!!
I absolutely admire this guy. I can only imagine how much he had to go through to be there on that stage. Sure, he isn't a born showman, but his stammering isn't taking away any of his confidence.
Sid Patil you know you talk to smart person when you see rick at picture ;D
26:40 The brilliant quote "and often I'll be told 'but you could get more payload if you made it expendable'. I said 'yes, but you could also get more payload from an aircraft if you got rid of the landing gear and the flaps... and just parachuted out when you got to your destination."
The second amazing bit is 25:30 when he compares *buying* a single engine turboprop plane (which is like current single-use rockets) to *chartering* a 747 plane (which is like having a fully reusable BFR). It's just a brilliant demonstration of the massive cost difference between single-use and reusable.
Aww, he's so nervous! I'm with him.
I don't think so, he stutters all the time, presentation and interviews. I believe it is some sort of brain disorder, but it's no biggie.
Put differently: his internal data stream is too large to convey with words in a summarized manner :P
trashmail8 yea that's possible, but that also means he's kind of a bad presenter since that kind of stuff should've been done beforehand not on stage...
Troy was here (X)
I'm pretty confident saying he's an introvert.
There was a time where Airplanes were dangerous and nobody saw it as reliable transportation. Of course the naysayers were the Train and Ship industry. The future looks bright. What a time to be alive.
It does feel amazing to be here before the dawn.
I genuinely can't wait for the smear campaigns by the air travel industry to start against rocket flights!
wow, that's a big fucking rocket...
Thats what seh Said xD
Still not bigger than mine ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
"Interplanetary"
Big Friendly Rocket... :)
electrolinks that's what I had thought
Elon makes me feel okay about stuttering when presenting
awesome!
Hai sugoi like sushi :)
How To Make Sushi haha you here?
Go Big or Stay Home - Elon 2022
going hard or hardly going
All this is, is SpaceX and Elon is making a LOT of huge corporations sweat, and that's a serious danger..
I am curious how much worse it would be for the atmosphere. Airplanes burn alot of fuel, but not as much as a rocket.
After the launch of Falcon Heavy it is a pleasure to rewatch this, being one step closer to reality.
He probably works 20 hours per day 350 days per year, and he probably works twice as hard as us for each of those hours. Yeah, he was emotional.
Dude, I was almost tearing up when he said that. The future of humanity might have been decided in that very moment. If that doesn't make you emotional you're not human.
I wish that we soon find immortality. People like Elon Musk dont deserve to die.
As a former SpaceX employee who joined SpaceX after their fourth Falcon 1 launch and before the maiden flight of the Falcon 9, the company and Elon were on a high. He threw a bunch of parties for the employees after the maiden launch of Falcon 9 and the successful test of the Dragon docking.
just gotta love that guy, doing so much for humanity
and so many butthurt enemies. Including his personal heros like Buzz Aldrin.
shame on humanity.
Musk is a joke, he's depending on the masses to finance his pipe dreams. Establishing colonies on Mars will do nothing for humanity, it will just be a drain on resources and will result in failure because Mars is ridiculously hostile to human life.
lol dumb
dumb in reply to idontcare80. incredibly short sighted just not even worth a response
You're just afraid of what you'll learn about your beloved hero if you actually put some effort into thinking about how insane his plans are.
He's so genuine. It's really hard to not to get really excited. He may not be bombastic, but you can feel his passion when he talks about the future of SpaceX
agreed. I love that he does this himself even hes not comfortable speaking in front of such a crowd. A very humble person
I genuinely started crying, this is beautiful. THIS is our future as a species, and I love every part of it.
For the speed and size of of a rocket, it's much more intense.
try to balance long and short stick on finger...
A well programmed robot can balance a long stick just fine. But it doesn't matter--you guys go on thinking you're more clever than those people who build those rockets.
I mean it is a lot shorter when it lands because as you saw in the video the bigger part of it detaches mid-flight
what i want to say is that it is much easier to balance long stick than short stick if you try try with your hand. Didnt you play as a kid who will balance longer?
it's pleasure to live in your era Elon.
Ranggi Arohmansani oh boi.....
this man is our generation’s best
That is the best 45 mins I have spent on UA-cam. Damn this is inspiring.
We need to get off this planet. Not for profit or for policy, but for the future. For our grandchildren and then their grandchildren as well. Our story started on Earth but we can't let it finish here.
James Perrin So young and so wise, woah
We need to get off this planet, and also preserve this planet. We should think about making the solar system our home instead of earth, but that doesn't mean we should let earth die
No point going to mars , jack all minerals there for us to survive one , we won’t be able and settle colonies big enough by the time our grand and great grandchildren are here
about the Sun we have the time don't worry 😂😂
The first danger for the humanity it's the humanity
Humanity's an idea, a people. Not a place
You really can see that he is not a good public speaker, nor does he like it.
And still he kicks his own ass into doing it, because he wants to be one that can.
I call that personal discipline.
Worth admiration, even if i do not agree with half his projects.
Ae Norist what is that you disagree with?
Please Norist, tell us which project of Elon's you disagree with.
Could you please tell us which projects and why?
"it's 2017, we should have a lunar base. what the hell is going on?"
Von Braun would be proud.
My god Von Braun would be throwing his hat in to make this a reality. He wanted to go to Mars. But NASA had other priorities. He never got his wish.
Von Braun did envision that the man to lead us to Mars would be called “Elon” in his book “Mars Project” in 1952. It’s basically Elon’s destiny.
Why ? elon musk didnt kill jews
That's awesome Tony! ... errr I mean Mr Stark..... err... Elon ... yeah that's it.
AirCommandRockets love your vids man!
Elon is stark without the bullshit
Even Tony couldn't do this kind of thing.
Graphic novelists and their blue energy orb bullshit can't come up with stuff like this for their fictional characters.
The fictional character Tony Stark is nothing like Elon Musk as a person. Just as much a difference as between Trump and JFK.
These will be the first manned ships to sail the interplanetary seas. I imagine the first one to land on Mars could end up staying there as a monument for centuries to come. The first great wonder of the new new world.
This comment made my eyes water
Kevin Scales Kinda defeats the point in reusability though. Maybe after its third trip :)
By the time of BFR, that accuracy could be a few centimetres, and on the launch pad the blowback will be directed away nicely from the delicate engine section.)
awuma
I don't know, rapid planetary transit could be incredible useful for cargo and military purposes.
I admire Elon as it's fairly obvious (and from previous talks) that he doesn't enjoy speaking in front of crowds, but the fact that he does it shows his passion for his work
The first exoplanet our species inhabit should be called ELON in honour of this fine man.
It should
Or, depending on the smell, Musk.

Kyle Clark good luck landing on the sun
They were just in awe and a bit trolled too ;-)
+Kyle Clark
I'm more of a Jupiter man, myself.
As we all know, North Korea have already landed on the Sun.
Strap a Zubrin nuclear salt water rocket to it. Now that can explore the solar system on a single tank!
Elon's stuttering doesn't bother me at all. For the love of Godspeed, listen to what he has to say instead of focusing on how he is saying it.
If Elon had a slogan, this would be it: "Revolutionizing entire industries, one keynote at a time"
This man's ambition excites every fiber of my being!
I have goosebumps, I can't say anything to these inventions, that's more than beautiful. 0.o

Often when Musk speak, I turn on 1.25x speed, then it gets perfect.
Love you Elon for the human you are and if I could, I would do the same as you! You will bring Humanity to its greatness!
War is Hell
hahahahaha very funny comment, respect to Elon Musk...
War is Hell Holy crap, your right.
i normally watch youtube on 1.5 to 2x speed but i lower Elon vids to 1 to 1.25x
Star-Lord are you Neo
War is Hell That is perfect! 1.25x is just what I needed!
"It's 2017, I mean we should have a lunar base by now, what the hell is going on?"
Love that guy
If the world just had 100 people like this (not driven by money)....what a world this will be.
A lot of the worlds most rich are alright, like Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates. Definitely not enough capitalist collective success minded people out there though.
Derick Shalo Money is just a representation of value. It's not good or bad.
tseawell90,
True. Money is nothing but transcended value. Either way, the values are not ambitious enough to push mankind to the next level.
Derick Shalo Well said
If you think Elon is not motivated by money.
Elon dragging humanity where we should've been headed all along.
CreepinWhileYouSleepin Dude's like the human version of Urdnot Wrex.

Samuel Campion Given its capability to perform a wide range of mission profiles, let's settle on the polite form: "Big Flexible Rocket".
Gavin Ward haha very good
No its big fucking robot
Nice to see he's still human and gets a little nervous talking in public like the rest of us.
PsychoticusRex he's always been human. The way he talks, he's very focused on accomplishing his dream and getting the point across. No bullshit.
