I love how we went from barley seeing Godzilla on screen and feeling it's destructive nature in those brief moments to watching him executing perfect suplex on Kong
Me too, Godzilla 2014 and kotm was peak, but this is where we’re at now, this is what the fans want, and it’s only gonna get worse from here, it’s really gonna be the new mcu just like the fans want, but they won’t wake up and just want constant big cgi fights
Everyone trying to push the "this is just like showa" and "Godzilla's always been silly" shit simultaneously ignore the fact that this is a specific series of Godzilla movies that was absolutely much more grounded than this. Even Showa itself often had messaging woven into its films, something completely absent with MV, and their visuals were lacking from a lack of money and 50s-70s technology. There is no excuse for the downgrade in visuals today with +100 million budgets. Comparing the two is a disservice to the actual showa era films.
@@t.c.g.thecentregod2809 KOTM was the start of that shitty MV period but at least they still had a good Godzilla design, solid music, and a handful of really nice shots.
The man took an entire minute to say : "Hey if you liked this movie you are right, your personal enjoyment is the most important part in enjoying artistical products" But you still find people here be like "the movie was good what the fuck are you saying"
Most of those people are hardcore fanboys that think the movie is perfection... which it isn't and this is coming from someone who loves the movie. Then the rest of them are just people who enjoyed the film, flaws and all but just don't agree with Filmento's view on some of those flaws... like me. I can still respect his view on the film, even if I don't agree with it 100%.
I like the pun! It did make me chuckle. Although, to be serious for a moment, I have to say that there is consequences in the film. I mean the whole premise of the film that starts it up is humanity screwing around in the Hollow Earth too much and awakens an ancient enemy that threatens to destroy the surface world. If that's not a big consequence, I don't know what it is.
There have been so many GxK fans that I've talked with over the last couple of months saying how awful KOTM is in comparison to GxK, but I think its the reverse. KOTM is still my personal favorite.
KoTM had it's own flaws. But it's no way more aweful than GxK. KoTM did things which no monsterverse movie ever did, which was showing the scale and destruction these titans can do. It also opened vast doors for the franchise. Wingard just went in the reverse direction and ruined it. He better stay away from franchise. Mike and Gareth are the only directors who deserve a comeback.
A critical analysis of GxK that doesn’t compare it to Minus One and instead to another monsterverse movie?!? Kudos to you Filmento! Genuinely good video
There’s a whole section called “Credibility: Minus One” He doesn’t say it but he talks about the human characters a lot even though the human characters are supposed to be irrelevant in the Monsterverse.
@@ayjay579 Except he is actually aware that the humans are less important and he's still being fair. He's judging that aspect accordingly to the bar for this kind of movies, and he knows they can make a human story that still works inside the movie cuz he already made a video on the topic regarding KotM and how they managed to make a working human side to the movie (unlike GvK) GxK humans were by far the worst only 2nd to GvK. Only good thing is Jia, and Trapper was funny but that's just it. Edit: And I'm saying this as someone who actually enjoyed GxK. I went to watch it 7 times
@@imnotaracistokay its just his opinion. Also if you watch the video you will understand why this was part of the "Anatomy of a Failure." Series. He didnt specifically say this whole movie is a failure, but it fails on many basic aspects of good movies. In all honesty, are people really going to watch these movies in 10 years? Probably not because other than vfx technology which will be outdated by then, the story and characters are not noteworthy enough. Which btw that is fine but i think in most people's opinion a good or great movie stands the test of time.
And people often forget just because something is objectively bad, doesn't mean you can't subjectively enjoy, or feel shame about enjoy something. No, they need to get defensive and claim it's the best thing ever and everyone who doesn't like it are just idiots or haters who don't get it. One thing I never felt shame for is I genuinely find Batman & Robin to be the most enjoyable batman movie. Especially in the current era where all the whinny bat fanatics keep insisting batsy has to be angry and gritty and dark all the time because that makes them feel smarter about enjoying batsy when the story is about a millionaire dressed up as a flying rat punching thugs to get his boner.
You know, when I clicked this video, I thought I'd hate it, but it's actually accurate. The fear, drama and suspense is gone. That's why everyone plays PS5 video games over movies.
This is so true 15:37 Because tiamat in the novel actually had abilities of it's and it almost killed Godzilla But the movie just made her just a sea monster to show that Godzilla is OP

I liked how one of the other Apes was running away and then Kong picked up a Rock and threw It at him, Hitting him Squarely on the Head with Absolute Perfect Aim. It was Hilarious 😂
I think we're in a time where we forgot the old age rule - you are given ONE lie to tell a story i.e. you can make the premise *anything* no matter how unbelievable, the audience will forgive it. But the reverse of this is that its just ONE lie; everything that flows from that must have internal logic. Most fictions these days completely forego this. They dont try and fail like some older fiction did, they just dont try at all bc who cares
@@strikerfc-gv7pc its not that audience are braindead, its that most people watching these kinds of movies have plenty of problems in real life (like schoolwork, stressful relationships, and of course taxes) so they watch them just to relax and escape all that stress and all those real life issues temporarily. 90% of the audience these days dont care about themes, story or character, they just want to be entertained, and as entertainment GXK works perfectly . if you hate it, good for you
@@tarzantabi7845 "90% of the audience these days don't care about themes, story or character, they just want to be entertained" That's a long way to say "braindead". Mindless fun is still mindless. And that's a big problem, not just for movie quality, but in general. Lack of standards and critical thinking makes you an easy target for scams and propaganda. Which then cause problems that make your life harder and more stressful.
Well, you inadvertently hit the nail on the head. It's not that companies are accidentally not hiring qualified actual story-tellers, filmmakers, actors, and writers...they're going out of their way not to hire them. This is why you have huge multi-million dollar franchises being handed to 20-something activists with not actual bonafides or experience in the field of successful film-making. The companies are now more interested in securing investors (while losing hundreds of millions of dollars...) instead of producing quality films.
Gxk having the biggest box office and highest audience rating of all Monsterverse movies is a mistake? Ok bucko. That's some grade A minority copium you got there.
Monsterverse basically went from Showa era style Godzilla movies to Heisei era style Godzilla movies within a single series of movies. And given the recent release of minus one we have 2 movies representing each style. Edit: I got the eras backwards it should be Heisei to Showa.
No, you got it right the first time. The Heisei films were practically designed to sell toys. Nearly every monster had an "evolved" or super form at some point or another. King Ghidorah became Mecha-King-Ghidorah, Mechagodzilla became Super Mechagodzilla, Rodan became Fire Rodan, Godzilla became Burning Godzilla, Moguera, Spacegodzilla and Destoroyah all had alternate forms they could transform into. Godzilla X Kong is more in line with the 90s Heisei films than it is with the 70s Showa films.
The monsterverse copied and paste off of Showa era which was a mistake and a bad idea. Gotta like how it tries too hard to be like older movies instead of being Legendary Godzilla.
A lot of people in this comment section don't seem to understand Anatomy of a Failure it's not about the movie being necessarily bad, it's just that the movie failed at something. Not really. GxK being the highest grossing MV film with 570 million and the highest audience rating at 92% says otherwise. This video is just contrarian minority copium.
Eh, on some level I say he kinda doesn't. I see where he's coming from, but some of the aspects he refers as flaws were selling points for most of the audience.
An argument I heard a lot in defense of this movie, and in comparison to Godzilla: Minus One, was: "They are just different. One is the original serious allegory about real world disasters and trauma, and the other the silly cartoony fights amongst giant monsters of the 70's. But they are both Godzilla." But like you said, and as recent films like Furiosa prove, there is no reason you can't do both at the same time. You can have people fight in chace sequences with silly non-nonsensical cars, and a deep characters that constantly struggle with trauma and loss, at the same time.
@@KingGoji-m1r3 I watched the movie. I liked it. Doesn't stop the fact that outside of Kong, no character it's capable to bring out any emotion out of it.
I think the real problem is one of black and white thinking. If they like the movie then it must be objectively good. It's hard to accept that the things they like might have flaws, that it needs to be either all good or all bad. There are many kinds of movies made for many different audiences, it's important to properly categorize criticisms. This was an exciting and cool movie, and if you WANT to turn your brain off and watch action figures come to life in the most epic fight scenes put the film then this is perfect. If you want a compelling plot with interesting characters then this movie is utter crap. You need to decide whether you're a screw or a nail, then either pick the movie that's a hammer or a screwdriver. Saying a hammer sucks because it's useless as a screwdriver is ridiculous. This video is great at showing us why this movie isn't a "movie" and I agree on all points. People on all sides need to realize that it's okay to like "bad" movies and it doesn't mean you're wrong for liking it. It also doesn't mean we're wrong for expecting more, for not liking it.
I believe even in today’s audience there are people who like fun goofy action and horror movies and people who like serious dark action and horror movies.
the "turn your brain off movies" usually work when you make something like Crank, where every set piece is so ridiculous and outlandish, every scene is so bombastic, logic itself doesn't apply in this universe anymore and it doesn't make sense to try and rationale it.
or indian action cinema too. big difference between turning your brain off to enjoy somenthing purposefully ridiculous VS turning your brain off to enjoy a glorified toy commercial.

I still do and would enjoy watching it again but I very much agree with everything you said here. While watching the movie I just don't recognize the things you mentioned but looking back, I even agree that the monsters seem smaller due to there being less scenes of civilians looking at the battle to show their scale. The only thing I'm conflicted about is caring vs understanding the mom daughter relationship. I feel like I cared a lot about their relationship as well as understood it BUT that's possibly because I've seen their relationship over the course of a few movies. Contained in this movie itself, I can definitely see not having enough reasons to care about their relationship on an emotional level. I feel that's a common flaw of movies within a series. Thanks for the video!
They’re right The whole movie Godzilla is just powering up and it doesn’t pay even off in the end. While King Kong is discovering there a more big apes and a whole other side of his world. Story wise King Kong carried idc about the fights
I thought it was terrible after my second time of watching but after seeing gxk I took Kotm for granted and I’d be happy even if they brought that tone back because anything is a step up from this garbage
It was the perfect balance of kaiju action and drama, not as grounded as Godzilla 2014, but NO over the top cheesiness. It was easily the best Monsterverse movie, IMO. Ever since Wingard took over, all that shit went out the window, along with most continuity. I know Legendary is doing another sequel, but I wouldn't miss the Monsterverse if it went away with the way it is now.
It's all about presentation. The battles in this when humans were present were like 10x more destructive than then the MUTOs were around. This movie gave a negative shit about showing the regular human damage and its impact on humans (still love it tho)
I’ll agree that GxK isn’t something that invokes a lot of emotions and the humans really were empty But then again, I went into this movie knowing that the monsters were what I really care about
true, also the monsters have plenty of emotion and personality in this film, most film critics seem to ignore that monsters are also characters as well
Same with the monsters too. We get small moments with Kong, but Godzilla's reduced in intelligence and sympathy but this time for no good reason. He's not the antagonist, he's the active hero.
I wouldn't say this movie is emotionally void. Kong also doesn't just feel like an action figure either. He grows an emotional bond with Suko and has a compelling journey to try and free his people. Also, the reason why there’s a lack of grounded perspective in most of the monster scenes, is because said scenes are meant to be from the monsters’ point of view, not the humans. Although, I still agree with some of your other criticisms. Also, I like how you referenced Godzilla Minus One at 8:48. Speaking of which, will you ever cover that movie? It incorporates a lot of advice you've shared in the past on how to create a great monster movie.
I'm not opposed to meaningless fight scenes, especially in kaiju films. Most fans of kaiju fans like watching monsters fight... sort of like watching a combat sport, such as boxing, mixed martial arts, etc. It's like rooting for your champion.
The next Godzilla and Kong will have the writer of Shang Chi and Across the Spider-verse, so there's hope that next film will be richer in terms of storytelling.

@Inkdisc Millenium Godzilla had two movies where his spines were a dark purple. GMK absolutely did NOT have pink spines lol. If anything his design was a return to form outside of the head shape and the demonic empty eyes. His color palate was much more in line with classic designs (charcoal black and bone white). GMK also never treated its premise like it was silly. It takes itself pretty damn seriously all things considered. Hell, I’d even go as far as to say that the premise in and of itself is not silly at all. Vengeful souls merging and empowering a vicious beast to wreak havoc on a country who’s forgotten its history, but is simultaneously protected by ancient guardians of the planet. The way the premise is handled feels far less ridiculous because it’s treated with sincerity. I wouldn’t say GxK takes itself all that seriously at all.
GXK wasn't for anyone. It was so bland and empty, everyone from die hard Godzilla fans to the mom and her five kids went to see it with grandpa. Just because a movie does better doesn't mean its actually made better. Hollywood only cares about the money so expect more of this lmao.

KOTM is a middleground between Adam-directed spectacle with G14 filming/writing model, I wish the fight weren't set entirely on dark environments but still not as bad as G14 like the final fight of Goji vs MUTOs god that was unwatchable
I liked this movie. It's probably because of the worldbuilding. I love how the whole world just excepted the there are big monsters around now and began adapting to it.
I find it interesting we went from a movie that treated godzilla as an apocalyptic force of nature, in a real-world setting where soldiers had to HALO jump and manually set a mechanical trigger on a nuke, to the latest film, that treats them as saturday morning cartoons and pets, where we have telepathy and magical flying ships. My problem with the godzilla franchise in the past was that they put none of the emotional core on Godzilla himself. a big reptile can carry emotions! ask the TMNT.
Well, Godzilla was supposed to be a force of nature. He represented the trauma of Japanese people who had PTSD of Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombing. He mostly being a giant spiky glowing lizard who like to wreck everything. He barely showing emotions and mostly looking grumpy, frowning, mad, or just totally pissed off because he represent trauma and anger of the victim of World War II. And then, started from Heisei era, he became a goofball by dancing, doing a drop kick, flying, talking and many more silly things. Yup, it's real.
Heisei Godzilla has shown emotions, even sort of crying in one movie. Also the TMNT comparison makes no sense, Godzilla is a hyper intelligent reptilian but not outright anthropomorphised
I heard someone put it in a way: "This is basically fast food, is trash, and it can do bad stuff to your insides... but is delicious" In a way, some movies are meant to do that (and probably sell toys, lets not lie to ourselves, back in time that was a goal of our fav series) and that's not a bad thing from time to time, it shows that we do want some midless fun.
@@strikerfc-gv7pc absolutely! the question is: you want to go movies to have fun or to be challenged with an idea? you say both?good, but remember that's not always the case for everyone, some want their burger that taste like fun 90's transformer robots that were done to sell toys, even if its not that great if you eat it every day, and would choose it over a Scallops with Caviar Sauce because they dont want to stress themselves, they just want boorger. Now granted, we can have that Burger taste like heavens and be quite healthy without being to fancy, but sadly not everyone can or want to go the extra mile

I like how people defend this movie as a "dump enjoyable fun" and then complain about some MCU movies and Fast & Furious which are also supposed to be "a simple fun"
I enjoy them all and I see what you mean here, but films like Multiverse of madness did let me down a bit (mostly becuase it was directed by Sam Raimi which is one of my favorite directors, and yet it felt nothing like a Raimi movie) also most people complaining about recent MCU movies, are probably just copying what their favorite youtuber is saying without actually watching them. if you ask me I have seen Thor love and thunder, Multiverse of Madness and Ant man 3, an I have mixed feelings for them, but people act like they were the worst thing ever, which compared to some of the stuff ive seen lately (I watched 3 sharknado movies for heavens sake) I can proudly state that Thor love and thunder and ant man 3 are far from terrible

Honestly, I would compare this movie more to the King Kong Television shows or King Kong escapes from 1967. Those shows were 1. far more divergent from King Kong's original mythos, and 2. nowhere near as well written as something like Kong Skull Island or King Kong 2005. They were more focused on entertainment and enjoyment. And frankly, I love it. Yeah sure, it's lost a lot of what the Monsterverse had before, and that is a gripe that I do have with the movie, but taking for what it is, it works. Plus, there are genuine qualities that I think you should have mentioned. First off, I do think you were a little harsh on the human cast, especially the titan vet, Trapper. While they're not standouts like KOTM or Minus One, the movie still gave at least some effort to distinguish them and try to tie back to the monsters, namely Illene and Jia's struggle mirroring Kong and Suko's struggle. As well as that, the movie's willingness to tell a majority of its story through the kaiju's body movements, facial expressions, and whatever is onscreen is definitely something to commend, with the standout scene being Skar King's introduction. In less than 20 minutes, we learn everything we need to know about who he is, what he's gonna be like, and why we should dislike him, and it is really well done. That said, I do agree that we should take it more seriously for the next one.
I just don't understand why people complained about Godzilla having so little screen time when 1: They know by now that this version only shows up and is active in general when there is an unbalanced. And 2: When he does show up after his fight with that Daddy Long Legs/Crab thing, he's preparing for what's about to come. He's a very punch-clock kind of guy
You seem to be one of the few content creators that resonates with the feeling I have that this franchise only went downhill after being given to Adan Wingard to lead... (Massive KotM fan here)
Same, these movies are becoming cartoons and for kids only, I enjoyed only some parts of this movie but like most Transformers movies, just pointless action that looks great but has no depth, no urgency, no anything. It felt like watching a poor version of the reboot Planet of the Apes movies. I have no idea why people hate KOTM, it literally has the best monsterfights, scenes but also the atmosphere of the first movie. This on the other hand was just whatever.
Totally agree. my biggest complaint is they never used all the amazing Titans introduced in KOTM. I hate to think we will never see them in the future because i have come to love Behemoth, Methuselah and Na Kika. A king needs his subjects. I wish they'd bring back the Titans!
Honestly as a Godzilla fan, it brings me back to the showa era! Its feels like its supposed to be goody kaiju fun. Godzilla always had two sides, goofy and serious.
While I completely agree with this take I’m thinking this movie wasn’t really made for me. I took my 10 year old nephew to it and after the movie ended he turned to me with the biggest smile on his face, gave me two thumbs up and said “ten out uncle, would recommend”.
I may be a fail as a monsterverse movie compared to the gritty earlier entries, but it's a damn fun movie on its own and a welcome change of pace to be honest
i love how you´re explaining the movie from the perspective of somone who´s not a hard core fan of the franchise but as someone who just watches movies cause they exist, really opens up the view of the movie from your videos, i as a fan understand why things are the way they are in the movie but someone who isn´t doesn´t know that this movie is technically a representation of the old godzilla movies from the 60s where they were all goofy and funky, the reason why the monsters feel smaller is because they move faster and that´s also because the director said that the story is told from the perspective of the monsters and not humans, which is something someone who is a fan knows but someone who isn´t doesn´t, which is why your arguments are valid, cause this is looked at from a very different perspective and it doesn´t look like it´s just a pile of garbage, your videos show that you did your research right but not in a way that justifies the movie as it is but as something that talks about something that a LOT of other movies do nowadays, the new godzilla is packed with refferences which only the fans know so those that didn´t like the movie have valid points if they can explain why the movie was bad, i see its bad parts and i agree with them, the reason why i love the movie is cause big monsters big fights, that´s my kind of a movie, that doesn´t mean it has to be something EVERYONE should like, if u don´t like it, that´s fine too also, was hoping u would make a kratos refference for Kong and Suko(small kong) cause that´s something people on the internet were doing
“It doesn’t make you think or feel” Well that’s a lie right off the bat. Also, Kong’s journey of discovering he’s not alone and discovering his people relating back to Jia and Dr. Andrews is perfectly fine. It’s not as good as King of the Montsers, but I would argue the human side is 1000% better than in Godzilla vs Kong. Trapper was a great character as well, he was charming and funny, and the rest of the cast was perfectly fine because the other characters don’t really matter. The characters are meant to be the monsters. This is what the fans wanted. Several of your “and thens” also had things that did happen from cause and effect. The signals are what caused the ship to temporarily black out. Some of your points are fine but some of them are just… not on par with your other videos. I love watching your videos, but this one was just not it. This movie did EXACTLY what the fans wanted, we didn’t want super deep human drama, we wanted bit monsters hitting other monsters in a cool way. We wanted the big action. That’s what we came for. But I disagree this is nonsense, a lot of the stuff you pointed out toward the end had very logical explanations. The crystal was part of Shimo’s body, so Skar King was overcharging her energy with it causing her immense pain, and the apes digging was then mining for resources and looking for a way to get back to the surface, which is explained. You can use your brain in this movie, it isn’t ALL noise, but once again, the fans wanted less humans and more monsters and that’s what we got. That’s why this movie is the highest grossing of the monsterverse.
@@Thedinosaurman923 Kong fanboy? I F you didn't like it than that's fine but personally I liked it
Everything you say goes out a 10 story window with how many times this movie made me verbally gasp and jolt in excitement in the theatre, something that rarely hapoens with me in a movie
Would love to see you have a crack at Godzilla Minus One. As for the monsterverse, it's following the same trend as all other kaiju movies. Look at the different eras of the original Japanese Godzilla films. The Shōwa era starts with the first Godzilla, gives us Son of Godzilla, ends with Terror of Mechagodzilla. Heisei resets to a darker, grittier tone with with Return of Godzilla and Godzilla vs Biollante, before going the tamer, goofier way of Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla and Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, including people with psychic connections to the monsters. Then Millennium era did the same with Godzilla 2000 and ending with Godzilla: Final Wars involving super humans fighting aliens. The current era, Reiwa, starts with Shin Godzilla and has Godzilla: Minus one for the live action, both very grounded and dark films, but also the animated series which are nothing if not fantastical. Gamera was the same, following the same pattern over its Shōwa and Heisei eras, even if it hewed closer to family friendly from the beginning.
I think the general opinion towards this movie is that 'it was fun' and sometimes people just want that, most of the people who went to watch gxk knew what they are going in for, I didn't expect any kind of story telling or good written characters, I was just there to see pink godzilla and kong jumping some monke. But yeah I can see your arguments.
Good critique. I'm a massive Godzilla fan, yet I felt nothing with this film. The spectacle and scale kaiju bring to the screen just wasn't there. Fans keep bringing up how you can't criticize it for being dumb fun when that's supposedly what the Showa movies were, except, they were much more than that. Most Showa movies had something meaningful to say, even when targeted to kids, which is important because they elevate the presence of kaiju, their destruction, their battles, and their impact. Just because GxK has more monster screentime doesn't mean it's better when it's at the cost of the rest of the movie's qualities. People don't realize that those extra things (yes, even the humans) are important to making monsters, well, monsters. Compared to the previous Monsterverse films, including GvK, this was a let down. Not to say this movie doesn't have its merits and that you can't have a blast with it. I just want to emphasize that Godzilla is not Transformers, or Fast and the Furious, or Marvel, or Rampage, or Pacific Rim Uprising. Even it at his cheesiest, there is a clear difference in what he brings to both sides of the spectrum, and it is not unreasonable to expect more substance from a hundred-plus million dollar movie, especially with a character as influential as Godzilla. Of course, we might not have had Suko nunchucks if that was the case so take my word for what you will.
This isn't dumb fun. Adam Wingard's top 5 favourite Godzilla films, 4 are Showa ear. He understands them perfectly. People say you need to turn your brain off, but actually you need to turn it on. I can't believe you don't understand the meanings of this film. It's like a timeless mythological epic.
@DarknessIsThePath probably "Giant Monke and Lizard fight another Giant Monke and Lizard", lol. The fact that there are people to cover it's flaws is just embarrassment.
Kong's first half is amazingly done, sadly halfway through around the Beast Glove introduction point is when it starts devolving into the "dumb fun" or "plastic-ky" area.
I think it's worth recognising that there ARE things you can take away from Godzilla X Kong, and that just because it has over the top action and silly set pieces, doesn't mean there isn't emptyness at its core. There are themes of cultural identity and oppression shoved into your face extremely clearly, and even references to the Book of Exodus and Shakespeare. It has heart, and messages that people can take away and think about. It just so happens there's also a scene of Godzilla jumping around in zero gravity. It harks back to the classic Showa era films, which also have subtext that are relevant for their time, but also have silly action scenes, letting audiences of all ages connect to it in several ways. Because of Gojira's history, I wouldn't be so set in dismissing GxK as some example of the dumbing down of modern Hollywood blockbusters, since this is still a very authentic portrayal of the series. I respectfully disagree with your view, even though I'd like for them to put a bit more depth in the next entry.
_Perfect_ I'm gonna Leave my 2 cents here; I feel like these are the top 2 strongest franchise's franchises still standing: Godzilla/Monsterverse Transformers/Bayverse. (Ik the BV is over but still they both have something in common).
Themes are not powerful if they don't have substance. Aside from Jia's dynamic as essentially an alien, everything else feels shallow. And ultimately, GXK feels less authentic than most Showa era films. KOTM had themes, but they were powerful and relevant to the story at hand. G14 and KSI had those too. Heck, GVK had them!!! But GXK felt shallow in comparison. Not to mention, the Showa era films were a product of the time and some of them can't work and won't work at all. Sometimes, it's better to let the past be the past and just work on the current environment. I left a similar comment in regards to his Rise of the Beasts video, and how the power dynamic was showcased in Bumblebee. But here's how he responded, and it can apply here as well: " I made that video about Rise of the Beasts, not about Bumblebee. Still, thanks very much for watching, I appreciate it!" And ultimately, that's the best way to put it. You can't back on previous installments because you yourself can't stand on your own. And ultimately, that's all the defense I saw with GXK; it just harkens back to previous films. And lastly, just because it harkens back to previous films, it doesn't mean it should necessarily copy those. I assume you were aware of the time when Madame Web was criticized for being "early 2000s superhero movie." Just replace Madame Web with GXK and "Early 2000s superhero movie" with "early 1970s kaiju movie." Yeah it doesn't seem so funny now...
Can we also say Peter Jackson's King Kong, while following the classic story beats, also fell prey to his trend - with less neon. I enjoyed much of it, but then there were those scenes which went on too long and might have been omitted altogether.
Then by your silly definition, it's a guilty pleasure movie. You want to watch it again even though you perceive it as garbage. That's idiotic. It's good because it's fun and entertaining. Recent MCU slops is what you called bad, because they tried to be fun but ended up being boring and confusing.
@@hazim9529 right on i found it fun i like fun movies but i wouldn't hold it at the same regard as other films iv watched recently (kingdom of the planet of the apes dune 2) but yeah i guess you could say its a guilty pleasure movie
yes, I think about that every time I am watching sci-fi movies. The CGI did the job for most of the scene, nothing special or nothing to be amazed by. All stories have the same cliche endings. I started to feel this way when the MARVEL movies came out. I started to feel lazy watching movies. Movies nowadays are boring. I don't know why The Matrix and LOTR are CGI but still worth watching rather than sci-fi movies now.
I was expecting this video to be a Dr Skipper like video that just compares GxK to Minus One every second, but this was actually good criticism. I do agree that movies should have consequences that get make the plot resonate with the audience instead of things just happening. Combine that with the amazing action and it would certainly make for a more impactful film. I enjoyed GxK but this is finally some good criticism for it. Good job!
Honestly if the plastic is shiny and fun enough i don't care. Marvel had their fun time for the kaiju fans to have their fun in the consumerist hell scape we call Hollywood. Edit: But yeah the movie for a non kaiju fan would probably be just as you described minimal and a sign of what you describe good vid. Personally i had a blast and couldnt stop smiling.
@@ThePrinceofHisOwnKingdom This movie isn't peak kaiju either. But the dumb fun kaiju movies are so much better then the dumb fun marvel movies. But I guess that's a matter of taste. Mainly due to the over saturation of marvel. Edit: I am biased and I don't think anything will change my opinion on this unless somehow someway marvel creates literal cinematic gold I will always prefer kaijus over superheros. @@matteomastrodomenico1231 kong was resurrected by lightning bc the original script had Frankenstein instead of kong and they kept it in. You should do a video on Godzilla Minus One. It not only has great shots and cool sequences but a really satisfying story. I never felt for a human character in monster movie as much as I felt for the protagonist in Godzilla Minus One.
The entire finale I just kept wishing we would get ONE shot from the people / ground's point of view, like Gareth Edwards did. We get no sense of scale, so ironically it feels like monsters fighting in a miniature village, rather than a real one. Our eyes need a sense of scale, but that takes more than just "Look its a big thing next to a big thing", it requires carefully lens, lighting and camera work
looking back i feel like the whole crystal thing could have tied so much together, just say that skar king controls shimo using a chipped off shard from the giant magical crystals that change gravity or smth. for what it’s worth the movie was INCREDIBLY fun but some tweaks could have made it better another thing i noticed that was that godzilla and kong’s separate brawls interestingly reflect each other. They both brutally kill but kong washes the guts off, later they kill aquatic leviathans but while godzilla absorbs its energy, kong eats the remains. It’s a cool way to deify godzilla while showing kong’s relatable side (im sure there’s a better way to articulate it but i tried lol)

I think you mean vice versa but I get what you mean.
*Heisei to Showa
No, you got it right the first time. The Heisei films were practically designed to sell toys. Nearly every monster had an "evolved" or super form at some point or another. King Ghidorah became Mecha-King-Ghidorah, Mechagodzilla became Super Mechagodzilla, Rodan became Fire Rodan, Godzilla became Burning Godzilla, Moguera, Spacegodzilla and Destoroyah all had alternate forms they could transform into.

This is exactly why I love your channel. I took my mom to see this movie in Imax 3D and thought the movie was AMAZING.

Fair point
Main problem in this movie as audiance I didn't felt any threat to humanity like king gidhora or mutos
It's all about presentation. The battles in this when humans were present were like 10x more destructive than then the MUTOs were around. This movie gave a negative shit about showing the regular human damage and its impact on humans (still love it tho)
I’ll agree that GxK isn’t something that invokes a lot of emotions and the humans really were empty
But then again, I went into this movie knowing that the monsters were what I really care about
true, also the monsters have plenty of emotion and personality in this film, most film critics seem to ignore that monsters are also characters as well
Same with the monsters too. We get small moments with Kong, but Godzilla's reduced in intelligence and sympathy but this time for no good reason. He's not the antagonist, he's the active hero.
Doesn't invoke a lot of emotions? I guess people are blind.
@@extremepower5765 no they can see perfectly
Me too but I still didn’t like it sadly

I liked this movie. It's probably because of the worldbuilding. I love how the whole world just excepted the there are big monsters around now and began adapting to it.
I find it interesting we went from a movie that treated godzilla as an apocalyptic force of nature, in a real-world setting where soldiers had to HALO jump and manually set a mechanical trigger on a nuke, to the latest film, that treats them as saturday morning cartoons and pets, where we have telepathy and magical flying ships.

have you seen the Heisei Series? becuase Goji develops a lot as a character in those films (you can see him crying, getting angry, and even smiling)
Well, Godzilla was supposed to be a force of nature. He represented the trauma of Japanese people who had PTSD of Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombing.
When Scorsese was talking about movies being theme park rides, THIS (and Transformers) is what he was referring to.
What’s wrong with theme park rides? Are you anti fun?
Exactly, Marvel movies are real cinema compared to shit like this.

1: They know by now that this version only shows up and is active in general when there is an unbalanced.
And 2: When he does show up after his fight with that Daddy Long Legs/Crab thing, he's preparing for what's about to come. He's a very punch-clock kind of guy

Agreed, the Monsterverse went down with Wingard's direction.
Thankfully, it seems he has steped away from a next installment... So maybe this Monsterverse can still be salveged? Or is it too late?
Totally agree. my biggest complaint is they never used all the amazing Titans introduced in KOTM. I hate to think we will never see them in the future because i have come to love Behemoth, Methuselah and Na Kika. A king needs his subjects. I wish they'd bring back the Titans!
Honestly as a Godzilla fan, it brings me back to the showa era! Its feels like its supposed to be goody kaiju fun. Godzilla always had two sides, goofy and serious.

“It doesn’t make you think or feel”
Well that’s a lie right off the bat.

@@Godzilla_Star_Eater And what is the "meaning of this film"?
@DarknessIsThePath probably "Giant Monke and Lizard fight another Giant Monke and Lizard", lol.
The fact that there are people to cover it's flaws is just embarrassment.
@@Godzilla_Star_Eater you can't have timeless mythological epic when you treat your monsters like toys you need to sell.
Yeah, no, let's not pretend most Showa movies weren't even more "turn-off your brain" than this one.
Kong's first half is amazingly done, sadly halfway through around the Beast Glove introduction point is when it starts devolving into the "dumb fun" or "plastic-ky" area.
I know you don't care for this movie, but what on Earth did Spider-Man Car do to you?
👏
_Perfect_
I'm gonna Leave my 2 cents here; I feel like these are the top 2 strongest franchise's franchises still standing: Godzilla/Monsterverse Transformers/Bayverse. (Ik the BV is over but still they both have something in common).
Fancy seeing you here! Great counter argument btw.
Still, thanks very much for watching, I appreciate it!"
And ultimately, that's the best way to put it.
@@kotm2021 That is a pretty weak argument.
The older Godzilla movies are fondly remembered, most early-2000s superhero movies are not.
Can we also say Peter Jackson's King Kong, while following the classic story beats, also fell prey to his trend - with less neon. I enjoyed much of it, but then there were those scenes which went on too long and might have been omitted altogether.
was the middle earth comment a joke or did you really think that's what hollow earth is called?
There's a hollow earth below the hollow earth so its fair to call it middle earth
Nah man, this movie was awesome! I just wish there was more Godzilla in the movie. Other than I loved every minute of it!
The movie is like a shiny, cool, crystal ball. The only thing is it's just there, has no other purpose aside from just being there, and looking shiny.
Was it a good movie?:no
Was it fun?:Hell yes
Would i watch it again?:fuck yeah
I watch just for godzilla but it was not involved enough in the movie 😢

Then by your silly definition, it's a guilty pleasure movie. You want to watch it again even though you perceive it as garbage. That's idiotic.
It's good because it's fun and entertaining. Recent MCU slops is what you called bad, because they tried to be fun but ended up being boring and confusing.
@@hazim9529 right on i found it fun i like fun movies but i wouldn't hold it at the same regard as other films iv watched recently (kingdom of the planet of the apes dune 2) but yeah i guess you could say its a guilty pleasure movie
This whole movie is basically just adult cocomelon. Just "look at the colours and shut up"
Nah, there is some depth to it.
You just have to be invested in the overarching story.
@@matteomastrodomenico1231too bad it’s barely touched upon because it’s so desperate to reach the next fight

yes, I think about that every time I am watching sci-fi movies. The CGI did the job for most of the scene, nothing special or nothing to be amazed by. All stories have the same cliche endings. I started to feel this way when the MARVEL movies came out. I started to feel lazy watching movies. Movies nowadays are boring. I don't know why The Matrix and LOTR are CGI but still worth watching rather than sci-fi movies now.
yes... they definitely forget that monsters is scary..especially godzilla a world ending monster.
But he never was in this continuity. It was always a force of good
They should keep the tradition of having a different director for each movie

Adam wingard would’ve stayed if he didn’t have a project to work on
No.
They should bring back Gareth Edwards.
I’ve always loved kaiju movies but this isn’t one of them for me
Marvel, at their peak, had substance.
@@ThePrinceofHisOwnKingdom This movie isn't peak kaiju either. But the dumb fun kaiju movies are so much better then the dumb fun marvel movies. But I guess that's a matter of taste. Plus Godzilla has a very special place in my heart. While I've turned extremely sour on marvel movies when I wasn't even that interested in the first place. Mainly due to the over saturation of marvel.
Edit: I am biased and I don't think anything will change my opinion on this unless somehow someway marvel creates literal cinematic gold I will always prefer kaijus over superheros. I also just like that movie theaters are getting some variety in it's plastic movies and not the same franchises over and over again.
@@strikerfc-gv7pc I personally liked Godzilla vs Kong and Godzilla king of the monsters more then this movie myself. And I also loved shin and minus zero. I like that the American Godzilla is more inspired by dumb fun Godzilla while toho creates more dramatic and substantive Godzilla.
@@KingGoji-m1r3 Nevermind Endgame, GxK comparison is with The Marvels.
Honestly, the more I see videos like this come out, the more I’m convinced people still don’t understand how flexible Godzilla movies can be which, no matter if it’s serious or goofy, can be enjoyed by its audience. Like I enjoyed KotM and GvK, both are vastly different in terms of its tone but are still enjoyable for what it wanted to achieve.
Did you watch the video?
@protosopic6398 Yes, and it doesn't know what it's talking about. Come back after you've watched a godzilla movie from the 60s tourist.
Even if there’s movies that I personally enjoyed like GXK, Im interested in how filmento analyzes both its strongest and weakest points of a movie. It’s really helping my writing skills as an amateur writer. Nice Video Filmento!

The Showa era movies follow logic more than this movie. At least in the showa era it didnt feel like they were making it up as they went along.

Most Showa movies literally did make up things as they went on.
Remember when Godzilla developed magnetic powers out of nowhere? Or even when King Kong was able to be resurrected by lightning?
@@matteomastrodomenico1231 kong was resurrected by lightning bc the original script had Frankenstein instead of kong and they kept it in. You should do a video on Godzilla Minus One. It not only has great shots and cool sequences but a really satisfying story. I never felt for a human character in monster movie as much as I felt for the protagonist in Godzilla Minus One.
Kongzilla running like olympic sprinters 😂😂😂
The entire finale I just kept wishing we would get ONE shot from the people / ground's point of view, like Gareth Edwards did.
We get no sense of scale, so ironically it feels like monsters fighting in a miniature village, rather than a real one. Our eyes need a sense of scale, but that takes more than just "Look its a big thing next to a big thing", it requires carefully lens, lighting and camera work
That's the thing: most people hated those shots.
looking back i feel like the whole crystal thing could have tied so much together, just say that skar king controls shimo using a chipped off shard from the giant magical crystals that change gravity or smth.
for what it’s worth the movie was INCREDIBLY fun but some tweaks could have made it better
another thing i noticed that was that godzilla and kong’s separate brawls interestingly reflect each other. They both brutally kill but kong washes the guts off, later they kill aquatic leviathans but while godzilla absorbs its energy, kong eats the remains. It’s a cool way to deify godzilla while showing kong’s relatable side (im sure there’s a better way to articulate it but i tried lol)
