This was a difficult era, and one when my grandparents had their kiddies. My parents and their children were born into abject poverty. and extremely d8fficult times, Ones I never want to remember and the violence they brought. Those inflicted on me brought sa sense of complete uselessness and being totally unworthy of life. It still continues to this day, 63 years later. I hear this beautiful music by Mr Newman and I enjoy it so much. Thankyou.
Love, love, l9ve. 3ven in my most darkest moments of regret and anger, it always brings me back from the brink. The knife edge between life and death. Mr Newman, thankyou.
I can hear some of the Finding Nemo soundtrack in this. Loved that sooo much. Calmness, stillness, and a subtle yearning for something; I've not heard these sensations as well expressed as by Thomas Newman.
This ethereal music reminds me of my father of so many things and the moments that I had shared with him, all the while bringing tears of bittersweet memories in my eyes.
watching this movie and this soundtrack will surely put you in it, truly a favorite movie and one of my top 5 soundtracks, i love the irish and their music
Thomas inspires me in all aspects of music. the strings are originally composed with virtual instruments(vsti's) then he going to an orchestra and has them do it live. Amazing!!!. This man makes the best music for movies. I just cant imagine what the movie would be like if his work wasn't in it
"Dirty Money" is the defining moment on this ST... Love it in the movie when his son is driving the car... Thnx James Quartz... Nice post... Oh and thnx Thomas Newman... Nice work...
The soundtrack for this film is haunting and exceptional. I agree that it is his best work. It has a vintage-esk sound to it which easily transports the listener back to the very era the film story takes place in. His music is very unique. Even without seeing who the composer is in the credits, I can hear it and say "that's a Thomas Newman score." Listen to Meet Joe Black, Shawshank Redemption, Cider House Rules, etc...you will hear it for yourself.
You say haunting... I love the music behind the scene when Tom Hanks and wife are looking out the kitchen window and their son is getting on his bike to go to school and Paul Newman pulls up to pay his debt to the boy ! Haunting !
Credit should also go to Conrad Hall, the cinematographer for this film (his last before his death). He, too, captured the mood of this film and with Newman's score, you get a perfect match of both sight and sound to enrich the storytelling.
I have not seen this movie but I hope to soon. Thomas Newmans scores to many of the films noted in the comments I am familiar with and love, he seems to make you FEEL the music, it draws you in. But after listening to this soundtrack I have to say that Cathedral really draws me in, all of it: 19.08 - 21.00. Those strings and that strange dissonance at 20.43 -20.50 makes me stop breathing. How did he do it? And the muted Choir somewhere in the Cathedral.... Oh I'm going to enjoy this film when I see it.
"The farm" just perfect I don't even know how to describe it.....tears tears tears always I listen to it just tears.....MY FAVORITE MOVIE EVER, my dad gave it to me that's a plus
Yes it just stayed there for me, deep in my mind. Such a realistic quality movie and this music is unforgettable along with the film. Probably my favorite movie of all time. Thomas Newman, thank you sir for creating these beautiful melodies. Wonderful.
TRUTH. To be fair (and to my great shame) I haven't seen 'Meet Joe Black', therefore haven't listened to the score and cannot comment. But Shawshank was also a masterpiece :)
Hey you smarty pant Watch the movie and tell us whether you listened any BGM while Sullivan Kills Rooney, if you do so, then go and take an appointment with ENT
Narayanan V Idiot. I gave a specific point in the scene. You literal idiot. It's just before the shooting. And I gave specific point in time. You moron.
I always got a little unnerved by it, in the knowledge of the character for whom the piece is written. Maguire is a cold-blooded killer, and the quirky juxtaposition of bouncy cellos, timpani, and subtle alarm bells always puts me on edge, like he's unhinged and unpredictable.
Newman's soundtracks for Finding Nemo & Finding Dory, American Beauty, The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, Bridge Of Spies, 1917, Spectre, Skyfall and The Highwaymen.
@@sauronthegrey Late reply, but anyway: Run All Night definitly had some elements that were also used in Road To Perdition, like the relation between father and son.
Hi, James Quartz here, using a different channel. The piece is titled 'Ghosts' and underscores the iconic scene where Tom Hanks' character encounters Paul Newman's character in the pouring rain, at the climax of the film.
+Steve Conwell Would love to, but youtube puts a limit on my video length. Besides, this does offer a distilled version so you get the best bits (in my opinion) :)

What a wonderful movie and music, unforgettable

You know music is beautiful when it makes you want to cry for no reason at all.
This is because music has its roots in the supernatural. Music and worship was going on in Heaven before we ever got here.
Its because you have every reason to do so, but we are learned not to.
You don't need a reason to feel emotions.
I love you.
This ethereal music reminds me of my father of so many things and the moments that I had shared with him, all the while bringing tears of bittersweet memories in my eyes.
Oh, I feel it too.
I cant' think of a single soundtrack this man has done that I don't love. His music is so identifiable but yet they are all different.
"ghosts" is so wonderful and gets me every time I listen to it.
Ben jammin Best scene in the movie with "ghosts" & the rain/scene...Paul Newman's face when he knows its over was fantastic..
fitz3691 I totally agree that's the only reason I love this song or even know it. Amazing scene
It makes me cry.
watching this movie and this soundtrack will surely put you in it, truly a favorite movie and one of my top 5 soundtracks, i love the irish and their music
Newman is a musical genius. I could listen to this beautiful soundtrack over and over. It captures the mood and flow of the film perfectly.
I've watched this film several times. One of my favorites. And the film score is wonderful. Really packs a lot of emotion.

great film. so underrated!
Indeed, one of the most underrated movies of the 2000's.
Wonderful film, great performances, exceptional music made me cry
Love this movie and Thomas Newman is such a beautiful compliment ♥
indeed
And now I know why this and Meet Joe Black are my favorite soundtracks ever. Thank you Thomas Newman, and thank you for posting.
Loved the movie and in part because of this soundtrack! Outstanding work by Thomas Newman.
'I'm glad it's you.'
the music in that scene is fucking phenomenal.

Matthew Williams Millers Crossing?
Matthew Williams all of them including Tom Hanks except the first one .
Fantastic choice of compositions, (glad you included Cathedral!!) one of my favourite scores of all time. :D
Fantastic music, Thomas Newman at his best
8:13 -- this piece is hauntingly beautiful

A great cinematographer.
Absolutely..great Cinematographer and artist ...kudos

If you have not yet done so, listen to the score of 'The Shawshank Redemption'. Equally as powerful and emotional. Thomas Newman is a talented man.
Totally agree with you my friend, I do love Shawshank, but I felt this score was a bit under-rated, so I'm giving it a popularity boost :)
Yeah no doubt. Good work ;)
James Quartz : Wasn't the Shawshank theme revamped for Brokeback Mountain? Thanks for posting this excellent score.
Grant Henderson So Was Red from The Shawshank OST was used in the trailer for BBM
Check history of the NEWMAN'S family.
This sound track one of the best thx JF
One of my most favorite soundtracks.
12:53-14:50 probably the best piece I've ever heard!
Matthew Rainone DEFINITELY. MINE TOO.
Best soundtrack ever composed by Thomas Newman IMHO
Thomas Newman and Steve Jablonsky are my all time favorite composers.
I love the strings in this theme. So smooth.
Ma come si fa a inventare una musica di questo livello da brivido ..👍👍
Thomas Newman created an excellent sountrack for this movie!
my favorite score.
One of my favorites!!!!
Such a beautiful work by Thomas Newman. I feel American Beauty and Shawshank were his best.
Well composed, I found that the best part is 'the road to chicago' .
I couldn't forget "The farm" since i saw this movie

Thomas Newman, thank you sir for creating these beautiful melodies.
Wonderful.
Thomas Newman is the best. The Horse Whisperer is just as good.
Thomas Newman is the best! This Soundtrack Explain It All......
The "Meet Joe Black" score is, by far, my favorite. To each his own, I suppose. All his compositions - this one, "...Shawshank...", others, are great.
TRUTH. To be fair (and to my great shame) I haven't seen 'Meet Joe Black', therefore haven't listened to the score and cannot comment. But Shawshank was also a masterpiece :)
James Quartz Although critically it didn't do too well, I personally think it's a good movie. You should check it out.
very sad but very good movie
I agree wholeheartedly. Nice job here.
Listen at 23:18. It's during the scene when Tom Hanks shoots his mentor Paul Newman.
donjuan4you There is no BGM when he kills his mentor except the sound of the Gun.
Narayanan V Idiot. I don't think you listened to the music at 23.18. Troll trying to be smart ass.

I like the part "Meet Maguire" (11:14), it always perks me up :o)
yea. its pretty amusing.
Any recommendations with similar type of music?
Newman's soundtracks for Finding Nemo & Finding Dory, American Beauty, The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, Bridge Of Spies, 1917, Spectre, Skyfall and The Highwaymen.

what is the name of the score at 6:03...????
It's an excerpt from 'Murder (In Four Parts)' - check the description for a full tracklist
WHAT A MOVIE:)

the loner 13 year old in me still loves this
Does anyone think that Liam Neeson's recent film: 'Run All Night' is very similar to Road to Perdition.
never seen it, is it any good
Its a decent movie- still not as good as this master piece.

this movie is so underrated
i think critically it didnt succeed well aka get popular because of the sad ending. bloody "happy happy be happy" society
Modern 'society' is as deep as a puddle today. I think (hope) this will change soon.
8:14 & 11:14 R The best!
Ghosts melody sounds awfully like the melody in 'Need to Feel loved', a dance track by Reflekt
