  • In mid-September of 2023, two friends and I (between the ages of 45-48) hiked The Grand Canyon Rim to Rim in a day. We drove from Ogden Utah to the north rim and parked our truck at the trailhead. We then caught a shuttle/van (pre-arranged and paid for. 4-hour ride), to the south end. We had a room reserved at the Yavapai Lodge in Grand Canyon Village. It was nothing fancy, but it fit our needs perfectly. We had pizza at the restaurant attached to the hotel and then called it an early night in preparation for the next day. The in-park shuttle service starts running at 6am, so we were up and at the bus stop for the first to the South Kaibab trailhead. We were on the trail by 06:30 (with headlamps on). The temperature was cool at the trailhead, but it was expected to be in the 80’s-90’s at the bottom. They give the weather report for Phantom Ranch. We made great time descending and moving across the canyon floor. So much so, that we thought we were going to be way ahead of the projected 10-12 hours mark. The ascent gave us challenges. It is a constant uphill grind for 6-7 miles and by this time, I had blisters on the balls of my feet. The three of us had agreed to go at our own pace and not wait for one another, so Jesse and Kelly pulled ahead of me. I just kept my head down and kept putting one foot in front of the other. Resting when I needed to. When we got to the truck, I had a cooler with cold sodas and better snacks waiting. We drove straight to Kanab and found the best cheeseburger at wildthymekanab.com/ . Then we stayed at Red Canyon Cabins in Kanab for the night. Drove home to Ogden the next day. You do not need a permit to hike into the Grand Canyon. You can also camp at Phantom Ranch if you want to break the hike up.
Conditioning prep (I’m 6’2” 215-220lb)- Some of the things that I did to get conditioned for this hike, was ruck hiking, circuit training and I did 100 air squats everyday unless I was doing a dedicated leg day workout. As an example, if I was doing an arm workout for the day, I would mix in 25 air squats here and there until I hit 100. Then, on the days when I did a dedicated leg workout, I went hard! Honestly, I felt like my legs were in good shape. It was the last few hours of constant uphill cardio where I struggled.
Food and water- In the hotel I had instant oatmeal, a granola bar and coffee for breakfast. Once on the trail I ate a power bar of some kind every hour whether I was hungry or not. I didn’t start this until about hour 4-5. I hindsight I should’ve started right off the bat because I got a little nauseous mid-day. But I recovered fast. I stopped at every water station and mixed a bottle of NUUN electrolyte tabs. I believe this was a game changer for me. I am a believer now. I used to be an only water guy, but the water just doesn’t cut it on something like this. For lunch, I had an Uncrustable and salty chips.
Gear- I carried an Osprey Stratos 34 (highly recommend). It was perfect for my needs. It has a 3 liter bladder and plenty of storage. It rides on the hips and shoulders nicely, also. I used an LED headlamp that was inexpensive and bright. Beanie and gloves to start with. I did not use trekking poles but I saw a lot people with them. And for a camera, I only had my iPhone.

What an epic adventure guys!! Great job hammering that out, and doing it the more difficult direction. I'm 60 and still run in the Canyon a few times a year. I'll be there in 3 weeks to run another Rim2River and can't wait to be back.
Trail runners, like Altra Lone Peaks, or even better, Vivo Barefoot Primus Trail FG are the way to go in the Canyon. Wear Injinji smart wool toe socks, and you'll be bulletproof. Liquid I.V. is my preferred electrolyte mix, and I vary between a normal flavor, and the "energy multiplier" version that has macha green tea in it. I put a couple magnesium lysinate pills broken in half, in the drink flasks, and at the start of the day, a vitamin B complex 100 pill. GU Roctane gels every 45min or so, some with and some without caffeine.

Thank you for watching and I appreciate the pointers! I would do it again in a heartbeat if I got the opportunity. It was spectacular. I read a stat that only 1% of GC visitors go below the rim. That's a shame because it is so impressive from the bottom looking up. Good luck out there and be safe.

That is Awesome! Congrats! You have something to be proud of. We have hiked the south rim, and then a few years later hiked the north rim. We want to do a rim to rim hike. I don't think we could do it in one day though. When we did ours there was a guy who did the hike every day. I can't imagine that. His nick name was Maverick. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for the comment! You’re going to love it! Where do you live? We are from Utah, so the elevation didn’t bother us too much.
