Originally built in the 1890s, then rebuilt in the 1960s, these Barracks are now set for Demolition.
We head in to capture what remains of this vast derelict site.

Wow…I was intake 430 in 1974…..I loved every minute of basic training. I couldn’t have been happier.
Brilliant video, just came across it now as someone has posted it on a RCT page on Facebook, memories came flooding back, the rooms the Naafi & Gym to mention a few.
Yeah most of these rooms were 4 man rooms with beds & lockers in. Did my Basic here in1988.
Pity you never realized at the time the magnitude of the video when you were filming it ,as many soldiers passed through this place.

Brought back some memories, I did my basic training here in 1989. The Guardroom hasn't changed, got sent to the cells twice during locker inspections due to my socks not being smiley enough. Had to run around that little roundabout by the accommodation blocks when we messed up

It's always the socks! Sadly the guardroom has been demolished now, and soon the whole place will be lavish over priced housing 😔
That friggin roundabout! I also had to carry the pet rock round it for a week too. lol

I started my RCT training in Church Crookham, finishing and passing out at the new Buller barracks. I was one of the first into Buller, seeing this video is very sad.
You'd have been there with my dad then.
He was part of the move from Church Cookham as a Recruit as well.
And now the nightmares can end.

Thanks so much for the comment! Lovely to hear from someone who was posted there too. Sadly the Sergeant's Mess was completely demolished the week before we explored this place.. How long were you posted here for? It's a crying shame these barracks are going, such history!

I was here in 1992 after passing out from JLR Regt in Colerne and worked in the guardroom for a bit thanks for sharing the old cookhouse was pretty decent in the day
Stumbled across this footage when searching for info on a VC winner from the RASC - which became the RCT. My father was at Buller in the 60's, he returned to watch me at my passing out parade in the mid 80's and my brother also trained and passed out there shortly after me. From your filming the buildings and layout had changed little. The rooms, beds and even lockers were familiar, the dining area was also the same. I had no idea it was being demolished, I would have done anything to return and look round like you guys, although I think I would have wept (it was spotlessly clean when I was there). Training was tough, but the best weeks of my life, and my father was very proud to return to see his sons there. I was eventually wounded on active duty and had to leave the army but sometimes look back fondly at my time at Buller and the characters there. It changed me as a person (in a good way) - if I could go back I would do the whole thing again with a happy smile on my face. I wasn’t able to watch all the footage (too sad), but will return back to watch the rest when I get used to the idea it’s all now gone! Thanks for posting - and being respectful - Buller Barracks formed an important part of my family’s life.
It's sad seeing that a lot of the Barracks in Aldershot have gone. Aldershot is just a housing development now! When i filmed this I had no idea it meant so much to people, I really wish i had done a more in depth video but I'm glad I've recorded it for the years to come.

@@misconstruedadventures2592 Yes, it's great to have this record, and yes, thousands of 'kids' went through this place, many of them first time away from home. Some were desperate to get out of the training, but if they were 17 their parents had to sign them out and it took so long to process anyway (and some parents refused), you would have finished the training. Out of the over 80 'kids' that started in my troop, only 30 or so passed out. Terrible shame it’s gone, but thank you for recording this - it’s very important to have. I believe RAF Scampton (home to the Dam Busters and Red Arrows), and close to me is going the way of the housing estate, starting this year. Many of the original buildings are there - even from the 1940’s, including the old officer’s mess (none being in use anymore). They’re trying to save it, but if you get the chance, that would be an amazing place to record. (How can someone build houses over all that history!?)… Thanks again.
Started my career here in Jan 1980. Some memories, some a bit vague, some good some not so good, but will never forget it

My only Experience of Buller was at De-mob, I did my training in QE Barrack in Crookham in 68. Buller was under construction then
i was there 1983 to 1987 in the corps of drums, brilliant time sad to see its all gone.

Quite emotional to see this tbh. I did my basic training here in 1988. The 'magic roundabout' at 1:35 was something we had to run around at LEAST twice a day.
When I was in Smith block I was on the first floor and the 'bigger room' you mention at about 3:14 was the standard size of every room as each one housed 4 recruits .... looks like most of the rooms had partition walls put in presumably to convert them to single soldier rooms after Buller ceased to be Depot RCT in about 1993.
To be fair that is quite a big circle to run around so kudos to you putting up with it! Thank you for the clarification regarding the bigger room, it makes sense now! It's fantastic hearing from people like yourself who were based at Buller. Can't let the history be forgotten!

i remember the magic roundabout very well.we were on the second floor in the block behind it and i remember one morning no one came to give us the traditional wake up call.one of the lads woke up looked out of the window and sees everyone else out on parade below.ive never seen a room of lads get dressed and parade ready so fast
Did my basic trg there in 85. Where you came out the building at 10:00 was where we would gather for parade . Used to weed the cracks in the paving slabs on hands and knees using a knife. Can't believe what it looks like now. Food in the cookhouse was generally pretty good, either that or it just seemed like it 'cos we needed the calorie intake. The gym brought back nightmares as did the guardroom. Great vid but really sad at the same time.
Thank you! I can see why you guys had to weed those slabs, it's so overgrown now in the years it's been left. It's a right shame that these barracks are going now, they're very iconic.
Yes, great vid but sad. I was there in 85 too (Jan) .. still got the red 64 Sqd sweatshirt they made us all buy.Gym wasn't my fav place either. ..

That was weird watching that , I spent time at Buller Brks over my time serving . To see the windows of the rooms I stayed in , the cookhouse , the messes , lots of memories , all gone now and only ghosts remain . Thanks for the vid .
this was brilliant.i did my basic training here in '88 and this bought lots of great memories flooding back.did you find the underground shelters up towards the back of the camp?they were great hiding places when on night time guard duty !!

@@misconstruedadventures2592 as far as i remember yes.i recall them being right near the back of the camp,near a small fence you could step over that you could use as a short cut back into camp.i hope that makes sense.they were essentially big F.O holes dug in the ground with ladders down into them.i really hope you find them

My regiment (D&D) sent me there on a driving course in 72. On the first morning there were about 40 formed up outside the block. Seeing my two stripes an RCT Sgt detailed me to march them over to the vehicle park, the other side of the main road. Wondering how I was going to get them across I suddenly noticed two sprogs wearing fluorescent vests and carrying lollipops saying "STOP - TROOPS CROSSING", run out into the road and stop the traffic - bizarre!
Great to see the old place and the old memories. During week 9 i was ordered to go to the guardroom to see Bill & Ben, stupidly I asked why. "Because you haven't been yet" was my reply! That is military logic.
The RCT was 10,000 strong when I went through there in 79 so a very busy barracks during the cold war years.
Basic Training Intake 16/77 at Buller - Passed Out in February 1978. Haunting memories but can't remember which "Block" our Squad was allocated. I was in Smith Block when I came back from Driver Training at the ASMT, Leconfield where I was an "RP" until I was posted. Smith Block was used by those awaiting posting and the permanent Regimental Police. (The permanent RP's were usually Drivers RTU'd from Driver Training as they had failed the test too many times and awaiting being booked on to another driving course.)
i was there in 1970 with the royal corp of transport training the cookhouse had great grub wonderful the ncos were brilliant sgt magors were my favourates sad to see it being demolished but thanks for the memorys lads
Posted here in 1991-1993. Played alot of footy on the pitches. Depot & Trg Regiment RCT was one of the best footy teams in the UK Armed forces. Spent loads of time in the Cpls mess, which it looks like you went in to. Good memories.

Walked past Buller many times in the Shot ('76-1992) on courses. Up Gun Hill, past the WRAC Bks and onto Queen's Avenue. Never did like Aldershot but you never forget it.
Thanks for upload Arrived 1977. Basic was ok. A lot of troops passing oit like a factory. Town was rammed full of squaddies. Great postings available at that time I was in first group to ASMT Leconfield taking over from RAF. Easy summer, then to 26sqn NI and the rest is history. Left in 1994
Plenty of memories in that block I was 7sqn had a good bunch of lads I worked with at the time
Was there training and pass out 84 played a lot of football there for the regiment , some great times , many good nights in naffi, and a lot of beasting sessions loved the lot of it , sad to see it go ,, great memories .
I was here in 1985 this brings it all back cpl jones used to tell us the buildings were full of asbestos

Cheers dude! I can only imagine what you guys got up to after hours haha. Sadly a lot of Aldershot's military history is being demolished, will be sad to see these go, they're pretty iconic!

I was posted here 97-99 , was 8 fuel sqn at 1st then 7sqn b troop , swear you went in my mates old room :,,, so many memories, thanks
Jeremy Beadle was once in the guardhouse. He pulled a stunt for his show (one lad's dad marched with the band without the mum knowing, I think). When JB revealed himself, the SSM "jailed" him.

Fantastic, my home in 1973.
You might find that they were used for room clearing exercises....sometimes even the MOD/Local Police will use them for this also....hence the empty cylinders of simunition.
Funnily enough there is an Armed Police training centre near by so I'd imagine you're right!
I was based there from 2004 till 2008 7 sqn. Sad to see its not been revamped just left to get demolished. When I was living in the building on the right side we had 77sqn chefs/rad ops on the top floor

Done my basic training here, intake 103/4 b troop in 1980. I was 17 and really enjoyed my training. Certainly struggled with some of the running,and the gym beatings but really found out a lot about me and what I was capable of.seargeant Sinclair and corporal berney where the troop n.c.os. I can remember our first parade still in civvys, sergeant Sinclair looked me up and down, looked me straight in the eye and said ' I wanna fight you before you leave here boy, nice welcome.
Ended up in helicopter support unit j.h.s.u, served on acension island during Falklands,one of the"happy hookers" and by the way, never had that fight with sergeant Sinclair,he obviously realised he had bitten of more than he could chew😁

I cooked in that main kitchen from 73 to 75. Also in the Sgts Mess. I must have put together thousands of packed lunches for driver training.
Gutted to see it go. Had people running around that round wall (1.35) when they fucked up in the early 90’s. Use to forget that they were running round it. 😂😂. Good memories. Thanks for this.

Stayed at Buller Bks before deploying to the Gulf in 2003. Was in much better nick then though from what i remember!!.Think Normandy Bks/Arnhem Lines (para's)was knocked down & re developed back into a new Bks from what i gather. ..Great vid lads.👍👍

Wow, that would be awesome. I think somebody has already mentioned that between the Sgts mess and the old guard room was a smallish footy pitch that we used for training. It was right behind the hospital. The main pitch, which was lovely and had a great clubhouse was past the mess hall that you went into. You actually went into the office that I worked in. It was the last building you went in. This building was HQ and downstairs were the pay clerks and administration. The last room at the end where was where the paymaster had his office. If I remember correctly upstairs was the RSM etc. Thanks again, brilliant memories.

brought back so many bad memories, i was C troop 7 sqn but cant for the life of me remember even eating in the sloppy jockeys dining room. buller barracks RSM absolutely hated 7&8 sqns because we didnt march to and from work ( our sqn lines were below buller and now i think theyre ghurka transport )
It was known as BAOR (British Army Over the Road) when I was there :D

Misconstrued Adventures nice one I'll take a look. The blackboard in the guardroom looks to be the same as when I was there, I was an R.P. Before being posted to Germany, SUS and CA, soldier under sentence and close arrest, it was always filled in with some poor blokes details lol
7:02 its a drying room. The bars on the ceiling have hot water running through them like radiators. The entire room was for drying your kit after an exercise
Oh thank you!! Can imagine it got quite cramped with kit in there at points haha.

Weird seeing this.. Brought it all back.. Even the "beasting" cell with open roof in the guardroom ffs.. Today (14th October) in 1989 I took a train from Llanelli (South Wales) to sunny Aldershite and the delights of "hell on earth" called Buller Barracks. At 17 years and 1 month it was some culture shock. I have done many hard courses in and out of the military but get me back to this day 31 years ago?? Fuck that for a game of soldiers.. ;) Cheers for the vid lads

To see this now brings a tear to the eyes not that im a regimentalist but the buildings laying empty un-used and could so much have been turned into homes and made up communities and Kept Aldershot alive,
