Yes, Symptom of the Universe is a standout. I would go with Children of the Grave as my favorite. Never Say Die is an improvement on the original. The thing that bothered me about Speak of the Devil were Ozzy's multitracked vocals. Gillis, Aldridge and Sarzo played their asses off.

Though I'm always amazed by how Ozzy delivers the Sabbath stuff, "Live Evil" is much more mystical and emotional to me. I have this in vinyl since 1983, and "Sign of the southern cross" together with "Heaven & Hell" are purely magical. And "Mob Rules" live version kills it. Very very few live albums contain the feeling of the era and the awe of the early 80's pure heavy metal, and Live Evil does that! 👌

“Speak Of The Devil” to me is the best album. Brad Gillis simply sounds amazing (maybe his finest moment on guitar). “Live Evil” is also great. Ronnie James Dio made Black Sabbath a better band. It’s difficult to choose one over the other, but one thing is for sure: both are essential live albums to own in any decent music collection 🤘😎

Definitely going with Live Evil. I like the SOTD recording, it's a decent listen, but Live Evil captures the all-too-brief version of Black Sabbath at their best. The set-list could've included a few more songs from Heaven And Hell and Mob Rules but that's a small complaint.

Live Evil. No contest. Easily the best lineup Sabbath ever had. I think Dio did really good with the Ozzy era songs, though I think Ian Gillan and Tony Martin did a slightly better job covering those tunes. I've always really loved the live version of Voodoo, and in my opinion it surpasses the original studio take.

In Rudy Sarzo's book about his time in the Ozzy band, he noted that Sharon intentionally did an all Sabbath live album to stick it to the Sabbath organization. She only wanted to hurt their sales, nobody in Ozzy's band wanted to make that album and it was a big part of Randy's ultimate decision to leave after the third Ozzy studio album (what became Bark at the Moon).

    • @independenceltd.

That's not what happened. Ozzy was scheduled to release a live album, the album that would later be known as Tribute. Oh..."Live Evil"....Epic, majestic, heavy, thunderous, DIO! What more is there? Back in the day...my college roommate and I would have "Ronnie Hour" after our lunch period. Of course..I had the best stereo in our dorm and without fail every afternoon we would play Ronnie for an hour at stupid DB levels! LOL! "Live Evil" was often the album of choice. I am still hoping to find video from that "not only are we filming tonight.." comment from Ronnie during "Heaven and Hell" and hope that we might actually see footage from this stuff..(one can dream you know!!)... Vinny Appice's drums are mammoth as well. Now...I could have done without the Ozzy era stuff....but it was the first "official" Black Sabbath live recording so I am sure they needed to present that stuff as well...but songs like "Country Girl", "Wishing Well", and others would have been great. (The Hammersmith shows on New Year's Eve..cover that very nicely indeed).
Now the Ozzy. I played the crap out of it...mostly to hear Tommy Aldridge demonstrate why he is who he is. Of course Brad Gillis does a tremendous job...but it wasn't Randy....and once I heard "Tribute"..I rediscovered once again what made him so remarkable. "Tribute" is a superior album..."SOTD"..is good..but not up in "Live Evil" territory.
My listening of "SOTD" has diminished greatly over the years..but not "Live Evil"..that says it all.

Kurt Gøran Andersen the positive thing about Zakk though. He does love the Sabbath but those pinch harmonics get annoying really quick. I think he means well though. Rhodes was supposedly just bored playing the Sabbath stuff and he was never a Sabbath fan to begin with. And I don’t know for sure maybe it was Sharon who told him to overplay the Iommi stuff to belittle him. This is just speculation on my part. So don’t mean to offend anyone however I have suspicions. Not sure how Jake E Lee approached the Sabbath material live. If anyone knows I’d like to be educated

@@Mike-aka747 No, it isn't speculation. Randy did hate having to play the Sabbath songs. He didn't like Sabbath, and definitely did NOT want to record what would become SOTD, although he reluctantly agreed to do it before he was killed. Randy wanted out of that band, had had enough of the "rock star" nonsense, and figured that by doing this record, it would bring him one step closer to his contract to Ozzy being fulfilled. I think that Randy played the three Sabbath songs with his own style because he did find them quite boring. VERY good show! It was an interesting and strange time in metal. NWOBM has definitely caught on and, in Metal's founding and flagship band, Ozzy's gone and on his own. I remember fellow teens tuning into him that probably never even knew about Sabbath. Meanwhile, Sabbath picks up...Dio!..wow! And a lot of Elf/Rainbow listeners then became Sabbath fans. It was also interesting seeing live albums with some of the same songs! All things being equal and IMHO, Sabbath beat out Ozzy. The Sabbath album art was insane and each little picture represented a song which was a very cool idea.
Again, an odd time. It got even odder later, not so much because Dio left but because Ian Gillan joined the band and brought over another element in the Deep Purple-sphere. Like you, I was like 'game on' with Gillan being there. What it means is that by the time Ian Gillan joined them, Sabbath had enlisted two of the best hard rock/metal vocalists ever (Dio and Gillan) and I guess I'd have to say that both Ozzy and Dio were two of the best frontmen ever. Amazing stuff and, once again, this was a very good show!

Chris Story - Haha! Because he knew he couldn’t dream of singing any Dio songs, so he spun it like he was being “respectful”. This from the guy who hung a midget onstage nicknamed “Ronnie”. Give me an Fin’ break!

Man we used to get loaded and blast SOTD back in highschool. After the firing of Bob and Lee, Randy said he was quitting. Sharon talked him into doing the tour but he refused to do the live SABBATH covers album. Yes SOTD was conceived while Randy was still alive. It was the 3rd album in the contract signed with Jet Records.

I discovered Sabbath just about the time that Ozzy was fired and I LOVED ALL the original Ozzy era material and still do to this day. However, when Dio and Vinny joined The Sab's line up, I was not jaded towards the Ozzy years (have ALWAYS been an Iommi fan first and foremost anyway) and I found the then "new" Sabbath sound to be much more aggressive and "menacing" and that's what I craved musically. When I saw the Mob Rules Tour in '82 at the LA Forum, the first REAL concert I ever attended, well that show just sealed the deal for me as Sabbath became ALL that was Heavy Metal in my mind. My ears rang for three days after that show and the buzz of it still lingers to this very day! I wear my Live Evil shirt proudly and I listen to Live Evil tracks on a regular basis and still bang my head. If you ask me, NOBODY belts out a DIZZ BUSTIN' power chord better than Lord Iommi and his solos are over flowing with emotional expression (am NOT a fan of shredding for the sake of shredding) it just doesn't get any better than that as far as I'm concerned. All hail THE MIGHTY Black Sabbath!!

Speak of the Devil over Live Evil by a mile. Back when they both came out I was all Live Evil but over the years Speak of the Devil emerged as a better live record. Ozzy’s vocals are the best they sounded in years and Brad Gillis’s guitar is original yet affective. Most good guitar players can play the sabbath material note for note but would struggle playing like Gillis. Tommy Aldridge was awesome, Ruddy was great. And lastly the production on speak of the Devil was much better then Live Evil.

    this is rough.
We had guitars all around the house since before i could walk,,,,Popeye 'music box' version for me when i was 4. '61
Took Mountain and Sab to get me sorta serious.
That said, i was playing in a cover band in the early '80s. NYE, we get invited to spend the night with family.
Had KSJO on the box and they played Ozz from this with Paranoid.
My band was 2 guitars. Worked good.
THIS, Brad Gillis BLAZING with just bass and drums. Ass kicking.
I just loved how everything dropped out.
I quit the band about 4 months later..
oh, Sab ? never heard anything from this.
    OZZY !

Speak of the Devil was my introduction to Sabbath. Given that I had only recently started digging metal (Diary in particular) this was the perfect introduction to Sabbath for me. Gillis simply 1983ed the playing. Live Evil was my introduction to Ronnie James Dio (a few months later Holy Diver was released I believe). My only issue with Live Evil was that the set list was too Ozzy era heavy. Would have preferred a couple of more Dio era songs. They never should have done Iron Man for sure but he crushed on NIB. Children of the Sea and Voodoo really shine on this set.

I know this comment is way after you released this video but I gotta say.. I was at the Speak of the devil show at the Ritz. We were 17 and it was a 21 and over club but a cool bouncer let us in. We caught the evening show and I have to pick SOTD over live Evil cause SOTD was one of the best metal shows I've ever seen. Ozzys voice definitely cracked a bunch of times but Brad Gillis was absolutely smokin and really made the show for us. I was bummed about not seeing Randy since he died so shortly before the MSG show on the Diary tour. That was actually the saddest and one of the worst shows I've ever seen. Bernie Torme was a good Gtr player but not in the same league as Randy. The SOTD show went a long way in helping me get over the loss of Randy. It was a super rowdy show. The crowd was jacked up and I remember a few fights as well as seeing the bouncer who let us in beat the crap out of some guy. Live Evil.. As much as I love Dio.. The production is awful. Thankfully I saw the Mob Rules tour and that was insanely great. I think I remember Blue Oyster cult opening and they were always great too. Brad's playing was phenomenal though on SOTH and he was smart to leave ozzy cause he would have gotten shit on the same way Sharon's crapped on just about every musician who helped make ozzy's solo career happen. The setlist on SOTD was a Sabbath Dream setlist without a doubt. Love Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules though. Dio was easily one of the best singers in metal ever.

People always argue whose better, Ozzy or Dio. Look at the late seventies and the place that both Ozzy and Ronnie were in. Sabbath had fizzled out for Ozzy same as Rainbow did for Ronnie. The rock world needed heaven and hell and mob rules the same as it needed blizzard of oz and diary of a madman. The change gave us four of the greatest rock albums in history. And as far as the live sets go, both are equally righteous in their own aspects. 🔥🖤🔥

Cant separate the two albums (once again).
Love them both but the recording quality is slightly better on Ozzy's in my opinion.
On live albums, have you checked out Bowies concert at Hammersmith Odeon,1973?
Mick Ronson at his awesome and most rocking best.
It slips under many a radar but well worth checking out.
YT may butcher it into separate songs but STILL worth it.Start with Width of a Circle, blistering solo from Mick.
Great video again and always keeps my attention and i learn shit too.

I like Judas Priest more than Scorpions...but I like Tokyo Tapes better than Unleashed In The East. Unleashed sounds like they rushed a live album in 1979 to fulfill a record contract obligation. Columbia were assholes to Judas Priest and other rock acts...they would never have treated Bob Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel or Barbara Striesand like they did the hard rock acts. No way...those three acts would have got another record contract at the drop of a hat and left Columbia yearning for their former golden geese.

Black Sabbath's Live Evil is an EPIC metal experience from start to finish, the opening track Neon Knights alone is enough to blow the doors off SOTD, I've always liked SOTD, but it kinda just goes through the motions, but Live Evil to me is my favourite live album of ALL TIME from the greatest Sabbath line up 🕇👊🤘👊🕇

What Ozzy did in 1982 with that album was brilliant. Pete you said it, "they Van Halenized the music"
That to me was no accident. Sharon is pretty shrewd.
What they did by doing that was introduce Sabbath to a whole generation of guitar shredders and just hair metal fenatics in general.
Eddie Van Halen was king then. Just a few years earlier, Van Halen was blowing Sabbath off the stage.
So the Sabbath shakeup was necessary. I definitely think there's more to the story than just Ozzy leaving the band.
These are very shrewd business people that we are talking about here.

  • @JokersWild70
    @JokersWild70 4 роки тому

FYI: Randy died in March '82. He reluctantly agreed to record what would become SOTD, although he did not like Sabbath and didn't want to do it. Randy thought that it would be a step backwards in his own career, and he also didn't see the point in Ozzy recording Sabbath songs when he was trying to establish himself as a solo artist. After he was killed, Bernie Torme' was brought in for about a month, and then Brad Gillis. Gillis, Sarzo, and Aldridge only had 5 days to learn the 10 Sabbath songs that they were not familiar with, which is most likely why Brad had to fill in some gaps on the songs with his own solos. Ozzy has said that he doesn't care for the record and that it was done to get him out of his contract with Jet Records/Don Arden and that "the songs were a bunch of bullshit Sabbath covers." Don Arden was trying to force Ozzy to put out the live recording with Randy, but Ozzy refused, saying that he "wasn't going to make a whore out of Randy" for the sake of Don Arden's wallet.
