It's like a whole new style of music. Outlaw techno country. The riffs are ZZ Top. The beats are Daft Punk. The vocals are like something that Ian Curtis would be proud of. This is truly visionary music! Favorite track is probably the whole album!
Vinyl Junkies No, No, No. what I meant was, my bad, I’m 46 so apologies. This song is badass, the lyrics really floored me! I’m talking I got chills and had to pull over because, yes, tears. Tears of frustration with the world WE live in! I connected with the lyrics Sturgil dropped. Forgive me but I just discovered this band today. I KNOW Townes Van Zandt’s music, I KNOW Waylon Jennings music, I love Duran Duran, I’m just saying, I discovered him, his band, his music TODAY, and then I get to this song and it isn’t the music (but it is and I’ll get to that) the lyrics is exactly what I’m feeling in this fucking WORLD! But to have a band that 3-4 albums ago (forgive me if I’m wrong, fuck!), to stick with him and make a ZZ Top riffs, beats and just a NEW Fucking genre is awesome enough. I love/LOVE Townes Van Zandt, Love Waylon Jennings, Love Willie Nelson, Love Johnny Cash.... hate regular country music. I’m just saying this guy, Sturgil, really fucked my head up today. I love his country/Kentucky vocals from the past, I can dig those songs all day. I listened to the album he won a Grammy for and couldn’t believe how I didn’t recognize the Nirvana song except for the lyrics. THEN! I get to this song and the lyrics made me fucking weep like a baby cuz of the frustration I hold onto everyday! That’s all. I think I explained it better. P.fucking S, I love what you’re doing bro and will subscribe. ✌️
The last 2 tracks are standout for, particularly since they're quite different stlyistically, It makes for a really interesting contrast when spun back to back. I'm on the love side of this as well
Man ... Im digging the hell out of this album... Gave me the same feeling as a kid hearing rage against the machine for the first time. Something totally different and ROCKS!
How you can prove sturgill is just a really cool cat. The Special thanks in the credits for the anime was Walton Goggins and Joe Rogan. "Boyd Crowder from Justified" And "the Guy from fear factor"
I watched the anime first, and was blown away! I went into it completely blind had never heard or Simpson or the project. It struck a chord with me that no other media has done in a long long time! You have to watch the anime with a certain type of eyes, just like you have to listen to the music with those same type of ears! Love it!!!
Watched the anime yesterday, after having listened to the album about a dozen times. BLOWN AWAY! Once people put those 2 things together, they'll realize how big this project is and how Sturgill pulled it off.
I'll have to listen to it multiple times before I can understand it and give an opinion. I feel like I'm listening to a new record and it's 1978 again and it's over my head and I have to listen and listen before I understand it... EVERYTIME that happened back then it invariably meant I would come to love the record. So--I have high hopes he's created a gem here.
this album feels like a wonderful halfway point between kyuss' welcome to sky valley and queens of the stone age songs for the deaf. it's got some really good rock vibes, but there's also the undeniably poppy songs that compliment the rest of the album so well. before a couple of days ago, i had never heard of this band, but after watching the great netflix special, i have listened to the album somewhere between 10 and 20 times. i really love this jam.
Highly reccomend that people check out the live versions of these songs. I think he wrote these 3 years ago, as a special project and then sat on it waiting for the movie. The music has evolved quite a bit.
I just found you. I appreciate you. Thanks. You make me want to go buy an album. I kinda miss it. .... having something to go with the music. Edit: This should make his concerts interesting and it gave me the weeby jeebies when you said "last album".... Maybe most recent, but don't jinx us like that.
Wow! First song jas me spinning. That opening track has a Joy Division New Dawn Fades feel. Along with that zz top/gilmour/ whatever guitar playing? God bless us. Everyone. Thanks dude!
I'm a fan of this project. Do see the film. I found the the project to be "Heavy Metal" ,,, as in the 80s movie. However, the film lacks continuity or really a uniting storyline. Worth the watch and parts are mindblowingly cool. Multiple listenings will reveal a story of,, I got screwed, blued, and tattooed: so F--- you. How country can he be?
I know he gets tired of the Waylon comparison, but damnit if Waylon ain't smiling from his grave knowing Sturgill is damn well doing it his way. Favorite track is All Said And Done.
This was really fuckin cool man. I respected Sturgill doing his country thing. There was just something about it I didnt like. I cant really put my finger on it. I mean Ill listen to it but I did not purchase them.....But Im def buying this. This is fuckin cool. Thanks for the Spin man!
"Make Art Not Friends" hit me so hard because last year was a particularly difficult year with losing and gaining friends and trying to keep my confidence up (I have a slight fear of abandonment when it comes to friends). Sometimes it's too easy to give up and throw all the walls up, but for me it was important to remember that I needed friends that weren't toxic.
You know I never heard of him until I seen parts of the anime they made on here on UA-cam LOL sounds good so I looked up some more about him and I was like wow he's a country singer and I'm okay I mean I like all kinds of music I'm from the south so I mean Rock and country is more my stick but even his country music to me sounds more of a modern day country how it should be as opposed is to today's most modern country and I'm not putting everybody that's modern country in that group but a lot of its pop country but they just call it country but his even though it has that different sound but the soul of how it feels when he sings to me is what makes me feel like it's country it's not necessarily the the tone or the the sound of the actual music it's what he's saying to me that makes it feel country and I love both sides the country and this new record he did I mean it's no different from Hootie and the Blowfish doing Darius Rucker you know going from slight Rock to country or Kid Rock doing his thing and doing some country I mean they both sound good in their own rights to me so I give him an A++

Gonna be brutally honest, it's awful!! Side 2 is the better side, side 1 is horrible. I appreciate what he's trying to do but I don't think it works 80% of the time. His vocals just clash with the music and it hurts my brain
Lots of people aren't feeling it. I'm not one of those people. I think the passage of time will be very good to this album, it just doesn't fit in the box that people expect

I'm very much in agreement. Those are all the reasons some Sturgill fans will hate it. It doesn't fit in the box.
jkoff76 well said. I came here cuz Joe Rogan was on his nuts hard and now I see why.
@@theblueangel1973 I guess that means the music isn't your thing? How do you mean? Didn't listen to Joe Rogan podcast yet...
