We have a soft spot for going to the Royal Fisheries on Baxtergate for our fish and chips. We particularly like to treat ourselves to eat in having bread and butter plus a brew!
Fab video....fish and chips in Whitby are a must...we got ours from a great little chippy just before going back up those steps.... Did you know the benches on the steps is where they used to put the coffins when the bearers were having a minute to catch their breath on the way up to the church? Love Whitby

Bit late now, but there is an easier way up to and down from the Abbey. From the swing bridge you keep going in a straight line (past the shambles etc), about 3 doors down from the corner building there is a sign 'Abbey', instead of all steps it is groups of 4/5 steps with a flat walk in between the sets. It is nearly always empty because not many know about it.
I think that's the confusion - "the locals call it goth weekend"...well, the reason there so many people there around this time of year is *because* of the goth festival that is held around this time of year(And has been for over 20 years). Its only in the last ten or so years that the town got swamped with people 'dressing up' - If people think the costumes are anything to do with goth, then they're misunderstanding what the 'goth weekend' is all about. People who calls themselves goth don't do it in 'costume' for a weekend - They do it their whole lives...
