Gerstner US produced chests are made from solid wood and veneered plywood. Even Gerstner's 'International' line (made in China) is made from solid wood and plywood veneers. That chest is made of veneer over MDF. You can get that chest at Harbor Freight for around $60 with a coupon, but a similar American made Gerstner will be over $1K. Better than a Gerstner? No. You get what you pay for.
I agree, definitely not better quality than a gerstner.. but better in the sense that it's a fraction of price but still is pretty good quality overall.
The older models were MDF with a veneer. I had one back in the day and yes they were junk and mine got destroyed over time and I got rid of it. I recently decided to get another one and they are far better and made of solid wood glued together using finger joints. The quality of the wood, whatever it is, is not a hardwood like oak however they are now a lot better. I would recommend you take a new look at them. Whether they still sell the older models I am unsure. The one shown in this video looks like the new type as it has a golden color to it and the quilted look of the various wood glued together. Edit: The version I am talking about is the Harbor Freight one. Of course its no Gerstner, but for the money the new version is quite nice.
@@kivie13 I was at HF last week. I noticed the wood box on display. The reason I noticed it is because the price had increased to nearly $100. I took another look. Maybe it is solid wood, but the drawers are still butted together with stapled on bottom panels made of cardboard. Worth $40 or $50? Maybe. Worth $100? Nope.
@@MrSloika So I went and looked at my toolbox and I am not sure what version you are looking at. Mine is assembled and uses tenon joints and half laps while being glued and pinned together. Very common woodworking techniques were used. The bottoms of the drawers uses a fiberboard, not cardboard as you suggest. I believe, for its size, it should hold quite a bit of tools or supplies for crafts just fine. If you are expecting to put a 100 pound load in one of the drawers I wouldn't expect it to hold it very well. For what it is and the cost it is a fine box and I am particularly impressed with the finger joints and the quilted look of the various shades of the wood makes it look quite nice in my opinion. Obviously your opinion differs and obviously you have a my way or no way kind of personality. I never intended for this conversation to be a debate. If you think it is a garbage toolbox I really couldn't care less. I own one and soon to own another and I am quite happy paying 89 dollars each instead of 2500 for an overpriced Gerstner.
Thanks for sharing. This was right to the point
This is the exact use I want to do with this thing, thanks for the closer look
Hell yeah, I'm glad you liked the video! 😁Feel free to subscribe so you dont miss my other knife reviews!
