Thank you for leaving the natural edge. Rustic, classic, and highly functional. I can't get over the beauty of the grain - almost reptilian in areas! Honestly love this! 😊
Oh my, what a spectacular bowl, Mike. An absolute pleasure to watch you transform the blank into a thing of beauty. Thank you. Have an amzing holiday away. You deserve it, and thank you for making sure we don't suffer withdrawal symptoms by having a video to share 😂 Take care 🤗
The thick bark on this piece is amazing! The fact that the solid part of the wood glows but the bark does not is so interesting, particularly as it shows that inclusion in the middle that I couldn't see under regular light. Great job, as always.
I think this may be one of the most beautiful ones I’ve ever seen you make! I love the way that it changes from the bottom to the top and has the rough edge almost like a decorative ribbon around the top.
Wow! What can I say. Not only does it look fantastic it glows in the dark as well. Just loving the organic natural look. It look both practical and artistic... Well done, Mike.
A very pretty bowl Mike. The live edge survived and looks great, and the layers of grain are very unique. Nice job turning this. Who knew cow dung could be made to look beautiful!
What a great little hollow form , I do like a natural edge , that bark is beautiful . The grain and colour are fantastic, another beauty Mike , thank you 😊
Gorgeous piece of wood and now a gorgeous bowl. The stills show the wonderful grain well. Amazing how much this fluoresces. Also amazing that the hollowing created ribbon shavings. I was expecting dust. Very happy the bark is stable. Well done. Dave.
What an interesting wood, love the live edge on it. I've eclectic taste in everything, music, art, crafts, woodwork, authors, etc, so a wood turner like yourself, that does beautiful resin and inlay and all natural products is great! Enjoy your holiday yourself, your wife and children 😊
Hi Mike, What a pleasure to watch everything went so well and you turned a stunning Robina Burl Bowl. As you said there is every shape ,swirl and feathers in the grain. Always surprising when a piece is put under the UV light such a beautiful colour. Thanks for the video have a well earned vacation looking forward to the next one. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I really was not expecting much from that burl when I first saw it. Cow Dung was a perfect description of what it looked like. The piece you made is breathe taking. It looks so good, so much depth and personality. Love it. Great job Mike!
Thank you for leaving the natural edge. Rustic, classic, and highly functional. I can't get over the beauty of the grain. Almost reptilian in areas! Honestly love this piece. 😊
Ein sehr schönes kleines Teil mit herrlicher Maserung! Die Rinde hat, als sie noch nicht geölt war wie Kork ausgesehen. Hast du wieder ganz toll gemacht 🤩
Feathers in the grain is right - the inclusion to the right of the rotted area looks like the eye of a peacock feather, with the grain surrounding it and below like the barbs and such. I love where the wood took you on this one!
Mike, I love how an old dirty ugly Burl can turn out so lovely. Black locust always seems to have some of the most interesting grain patterns but usually have those patches of rot and bark inclusions. This piece turned out fantastic! 😎Great job mate!
Beautiful piece. Love the luminescence. We have a black locust growing in our yard, it blocks the satellite TV, grows offshoots of itself everywhere, has nasty sharp spines, etc. But it does make pretty bowls.
I love this one. Black Locust is a stunning wood, and can be enormously hard to the point of near constant sharpening of the gouge. I don't know where your piece came from, but in North America wherever it grows, there is a locust borer that attacks it. Because of the pest, most trees don't get to be giant and old, but they do collect interesting scars and grain from the predation. I saw you holding the 2 inch sanding disc in your hand, if you have a small branch or a big dowel, drill a hole in it, use a drill depth stop to hold the back end of the shaft and you've made a cheap handle for a passive sander. I turned a handle for this purpose from a piece of honeysuckle shrub, and it works great and looks cool too.
@MikeHolton it's funny you should say that. Up until the tail end of the 19th century, we didn't have a bug that ate black locust either. It used to be used to build barns and make eternal fence posts. It's incredibly rot resistant. I was told the bug came from Europe, but I have no idea other than old farmer anecdotes. Being in the UK has a few advantages in terms of ecological isolation, but I imagine there are many times that in disadvantages. In the long term, I mean.
I love what you were able to turn this into. Wow. Did you see the buffalo at the 5:38-5:40 mark?
No!, I'll go look . . . . ah yes, the upside down one 😃
Oh yeah well spotted.
Only when I went back! Good catch!
great catch, had to go back..lol
Thank you for leaving the natural edge. Rustic, classic, and highly functional. I can't get over the beauty of the grain - almost reptilian in areas! Honestly love this! 😊

Haha thanks so much Fiona 😂
@@MikeHolton You are most welcome 🙂
Another stunning work of art. Your ability to identify and bring out the beauty in an unassuming chunk of wood is worthy of praise.
Thanks so much Carlos 😃
Oh my, you've outdone yourself on this one. Your wife is gonna keep this one, 😊
Haha not sure yet lol she does have a lot 😃
The thick bark on this piece is amazing! The fact that the solid part of the wood glows but the bark does not is so interesting, particularly as it shows that inclusion in the middle that I couldn't see under regular light. Great job, as always.
Thanks Susana, the sap wood does not glow either which is so strange lol 😃
I think this may be one of the most beautiful ones I’ve ever seen you make! I love the way that it changes from the bottom to the top and has the rough edge almost like a decorative ribbon around the top.
Thank you so much! I really love this one as well 😊
You are correct that piece of wood has everything. Very beautiful. Reminds me of an old world piece of art. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much Bob 😃
I love the naturalness that came out of this bowl. Never judge a book by its cover.😊❤
I agree. I wasn’t expecting much, then it took my breath away.
Thanks so much 😃
Thanks Deborah! 😃
Oh this one is stunning! I could stare at the grain for hours! Thank you for sharing this with us Mike!
You're welcome Nikkie 😃
Wow! What can I say. Not only does it look fantastic it glows in the dark as well. Just loving the organic natural look. It look both practical and artistic... Well done, Mike.
Thank you so much!! 😃
Oh wow. What beautiful wood was hiding beneath that lumpy bark. Which really looks great on the edge too. Lovely!
Thank you very much! 😃
Another beauty. Love the natural luminescence. You could use several of these pieces around the house as nightlights.
Haha yes you could lol 😆
So many different grain angles in 1 piece of wood. Beautiful project.
Thanks, it really speaks for itself 😊
Once again you have pulled the beauty of the wood out of itself, brilliant work.
Thank you so much Simon😀
That is stunning! I’m thinking, “Don’t judge a book by its cover!”
Exactly Stan, always look for the beauty within 😃
That bark rim is spectacular!!! The colors, patterns, oh my! What a beautiful bowl you have made.

You have mined out another gem!
Gorgeous transition from gnarly bark to polished characterful grain with a graceful form.
🙏
Thanks Nichols, I love the 'mining' analogy 😃
A bar on a beach would be best! Truly amazing grain, love the shape, the live edge, and the finish! Have fun, be safe. Thanks Mike!

Thanks Joe, all he best, Mike 😃
A very pretty bowl Mike. The live edge survived and looks great, and the layers of grain are very unique. Nice job turning this. Who knew cow dung could be made to look beautiful!
Haha thanks my friend, you just got to get your hands beneath the crust lol 😃
Amazing grain, and the glow when the lights were out is super cool.
Thanks Donna, it's pretty cool 😎
I could see a shadow of a man playing a guitar when you were applying the oil! It’s another work of art.
Thanks Anne 😃
A simply beautiful piece of wood made into a really gorgeous bowl. Outstanding.
I was doubtful about leaving a live edge on this one with how gnarly that blank looked, but it was totally the right call with this one. Gorgeous!
Thanks! I wanted to try and keep it because I knew it would look good 😃
What a great little hollow form , I do like a natural edge , that bark is beautiful . The grain and colour are fantastic, another beauty Mike , thank you 😊
Thanks Bev 😄
The overhead view of this beauty was like looking into a crystal ball. And your tee shirt is hilarious!
Haha thanks Charmaine 😃
Gorgeous piece of wood and now a gorgeous bowl. The stills show the wonderful grain well. Amazing how much this fluoresces.
Also amazing that the hollowing created ribbon shavings. I was expecting dust.
Very happy the bark is stable.
Well done.
Dave.
Thanks Dave, I got a shock as well with the ribbons! So cool though 😃
Now THAT is a nice pie! WOW! What a beautiful piece. This is my favorite so far. Well done.
Thanks so much Molly 😃
That did look like a lot of fun to hollow. Love it when those long ribbons come off the tool. Beautiful piece.😊
Thanks Roger, Must admit I got a shock when they started coming and then they just got better, loved it 😃
Gorgeous bowl! The live edge is just as beautifully crazy as the grain and the shape is perfect. :)
Another wonderfully delightful turning.
Thanks Jeffrey! 😃
That’s some really beautiful wood and you did it justice! Enjoy your vacation! Thanks Mike!
Thanks Brenda, I'm sure we will 😃
Wow that’s absolutely amazing and the surprise at the end that it was UV reactive is even better. It certainly does tick all the boxes.😱❤️
Thanks Martin 😄

Wow, that grain is genuinely astonishing. Weirdly... centipede-y in a few places. Love it.
Thanks that is one of the patterns you see in this species of wood, you will also see it in laburnum
Great job on keep the bark on, I was for sure it was gonna come off. I love the levels of colors, and the grain. WOW.
I hope you have a great holiday.
Thanks so much Barry 😃
That's the prettiest cow dung I ever did see. I love how you can see the beauty in the most beastly knot of wood. Well done, again.

Ein sehr schönes kleines Teil mit herrlicher Maserung! Die Rinde hat, als sie noch nicht geölt war wie Kork ausgesehen. Hast du wieder ganz toll gemacht 🤩

Thanks Vince 😁
That's wonderful. I wasn't expecting the bark to stay on but... I'm wrong again!
Best Wishes, Brendan.
Haha thanks Brendan 😃
Feathers in the grain is right - the inclusion to the right of the rotted area looks like the eye of a peacock feather, with the grain surrounding it and below like the barbs and such.
I love where the wood took you on this one!
Me too, really happy with the end result and it was so much fun getting there 😃
When I first saw it, the burl looked like a huge wart! Amazing what you can find underneath. Awesome job.😺
Thanks so much Barbara 😃
Brilliant grain mike the Danish oil really makes it pop .
Thanks Robert, I quite agree 😃
Oh gosh, that is just stunning!!! So beautiful! ❤ I absolutely love it!!! 😍
Thanks Barb! 😃

Thanks so much, the grain pattern is so similar to laburnum, only difference is the colour of the wood.
@@MikeHolton ya, the laburnum is like our honey locust.
@@82ndairbornevet I'm going to have to do some research, they must be related in some way
@@MikeHolton they are related
@@82ndairbornevet Thought they must be, there are some unique grain features in laburnum that I have only ever seen again in Robinia
Stunning grain. Very beautiful bowl.
Thank you very much! 😃
At 5:50 when you showed the soft wood, it looked like the shape of a buffalo. Love your work and videos.
Thanks Julia, it's been spotted by a few people 😃
Beautiful as always. Enjoy your beach and bar !!!
Thanks Vicki, we will 😃
When you first "introduced" Robinia, I thought "this will be interesting" and it was. Well Done, Sir.

Haha thanks Tsering, we will have a great time I'm sure 😃
Burls are so much fun to see. Especially when the natural edge is retainable and the bark doesn’t break away. Spectacular as always! ❤
Thanks so much Kristina, this was so much fun 😃
Nice one Mike, I love Robinia. The oil finish makes it sing. Well done mate.
Thanks Jim 😃
Love the different colours in the grain
Thanks Paul, it is amazing wood! 😃
That is amazing with the black light it glowed like that
I know, it's so cool! 😃
The grain in that burl is unreal. One of my favorite pieces!
Thanks, mine too 😀
Another beauty. Love to see you enjoying working on these bowls.
Thanks, they are so fun to make 😃
It’s lovely Mike, as is your tee shirt. Coincidentally I’ve just first turned a shallow live edge bowl. Enjoy your holiday, you deserve it 🌞
Thanks Ray 😃
Beautiful piece. Love the luminescence. We have a black locust growing in our yard, it blocks the satellite TV, grows offshoots of itself everywhere, has nasty sharp spines, etc. But it does make pretty bowls.
Haha that sounds like black locust 😃
How fabulous! The natural edge reminds me of cork. Wonderful that it holds up so well!
Thanks Judith 😄

A really amazing bowl. That grain is absolutely beautiful. enjoy your holiday Mike. Cheers
Thanks Peter, we will 😀
That grain is extraordinary :)
I completely agree 😃
What a tremendous outcome from a scraggly piece of wood. Do love when I get these pieces, much more interesting than a standard blank.
Completely agree David, I have a ton of blanks that I'll probably never turn!
