- Singapore is one of the most high-tech cities in the world. However, due to its hot climate and low altitude, the island city-state is the fifth country in the world most likely to face extremely high water scarcity by 2040. The government itself, like many environmental organizations, is aware of this problem and is actively trying to solve it, starting with saving a valuable resource and ending with the development of innovative technologies. But how exactly high technology and human ingenuity can solve the problem of water scarcity? Even before independence from Malaysia in 1965, Singapore suffered severely from water shortages. The only reservoir, MacRitchie Reservoir, could not meet all the needs, despite its modernization and significant expansion. The government even had to divide the country into seven regions and alternately turn off the water in each of them so that residents of other areas can use the water.

I'm born n raise in Singaporean. When I travel to overseas and saw how other countries waste water, it helps me to reflect on how we should do our part to conserve. We have no natural resources and we have to think of ways n means to conserve or innovate. But the younger generation will not understand the tough time when water is rationed during dry seasons.

Oh, one piece of advice: If you ever go to Singapore, be Very Sure to read the back of your airline ticket. The Laws are very strict and punishment can be very harsh. Another area an off-earth settlement planner can learn from.

We have to thank our founding generation and the excellent work over these years. The older generation will remember the tough time but those born after 2000, they will not really understand as they didn't gone thru it and likely take them for granted. I felt that government need more campaign to educate both younger generation and new immigrants.

How would you know there is no bribe or corruption happen? There will always be bribe. For example :Bribe among parents and kid (Mom bribe her child to behave or whatever with ice cream or chocolate reward), bribe among couple/partner/spouse( Girlfriend/wife reward boyfriend/husband with s*x as long as the boyfriend/husband willing to do something that the boyfriend/husband refuse to do initially) or bribe in business(something that mostly involve when getting tender/project/service or etc)

we are very fortunate to have proper and brightly lighted walkways. Maybe the lights can be reduced by half; ie switch every other light to conserve electricity. If you visit other neighbouring countries, you don't see the walkways so brightly lighted; and they are very safe too. Another way to conserve water is to stop using high pressure water jets to wash the floor. The contractor who uses these devices are wasting water. Sometimes I see the Bangladesh workers washing outside in the rain.
Singapore pays 3 sen per thousand gallons of raw water and sells treated water back to Johor at 50 sen per thousand gallons, a fraction of the cost of treating the water.
It costs Singapore RM2.40 to treat every thousand gallons of water. By selling at 50 sen, Singapore is providing a subsidy of RM1.90 per thousand gallons of water.
Also, SG government told Malaysia that they are open to discussion despite Malaysia losing the right to review the price according to the contract.
However, the treated water being sold back to Malaysia will be adjusted accordingly too.

I was surprised not seeing the use of home grey water system in this video. Does the government encourage the population to re-use their home water through grey water system?
we do it as a nation. you notice the "Newater"? that's water from our used water....including sewage
35 to 55 meters underground and approximately 90km of deep tunnels and 120km of link sewers, are scheduled for completion by 2025 at a cost of US 7.2 billion. That’s the grey water system as you called it, water produced is released to the reservoir and a large quantity is used in electronic industry because of the high quality. Because of the ultra deep design, sewage water flows by gravity to the processing plants.

Does Singapore remineralize its drinking water after the RO/Desalination?
From the laundry machine , I collect on average 150 litres of used water per wash to flush the toilets. That’s 750 litres per month saving of cistern water .
hong kong uses sea water for cistern flushing.....
Singapore should consider digging very deep caverns to hold/store water like the caverns under Jurong Island for storage of hydrocarbons/ oil. To act like aquifers. To solve some the problem of the limited space for reservoirs.
Desalination is a very energy-intensive process. Govt needs to add another energy generation ways/budget to sustain it if we want to be independent of Johor's water in another 40+ years.
actually we can already self sustain but as you mentioned, it is still more economical to get raw water from Johor hence we continue to do so.
We have a very cheap and efficient solution currently being used in Louisiana our proprietary technology treats thousands of gallons of waste water turning into potable drinking water...it could be an efficient solution for Singapore IMO
I live in India and i save water bathing not using shower but only use one bucket everyday .... 🙂 ....

Osmosis will not resolve Singapore's water problem with Osmosis , as it is unusable without mixing chemicals or other water with it . Rising sea levels could also make cultivation impossible as sea water infiltrations
If the raw water supply from Malaysia is insignificant and unreliable at 250mgd @USD 0.01 / 4500 liters then why take water from them since 1960s. Just wandering.

Both ends of Pulau Brani can block up to form a larger than the McRitchie reservoirs. If they can reclaim Tuas, Marina Bay and construct the Marina Barrage, why can’t they do this ‘simple’ task?

Singapore had in 1960's, quite a lot. But the population density was very low compared to year 1999, and to today.
The fact is what it had is now so insignificant due to "growth", that it has almost nothing. Do you find this not true?
The so call progressive solutions are not sustainable, and are over massive endeavors, and often create negative side effects. But they are however successful for the time being, and are impressive only when looking at Singapore in the 1960's when it was just a flat island, a land that was easy to develope without massive undertakings.
