Pre-pandemic, I lived in the Washington DC metro area, and I was very active in the city seeing movies, theatre, attending happy hours, & trying new restaurants. I used to catch the metro home, sometimes late at night. The vibe, and volume level, of the train ride was much different than my commute to and from work. I don’t take the train much now, but funny enough my last experience was taking the very last train home after a baseball game last summer. Love the beard! Cheers
I used to work at the Bell center, when we had hockey games I often just barely got the last subway home. But sometimes I missed it and had to wait 1 hour for the night bus to come by, it took 1 hour to get to my stop and I had to walk 45 minutes to get back home... that was fun.
Flashbacks to nights out down Brighton. Getting the train at 4am back to Three Bridges then a taxi back home. Maybe with a scooby burger from outside the station. Been a while. Not sure I miss it! 😂
So, I haven't really caught many late-night trains, but my university had a late-night bus that went around the college campuses, and filled a similar role. There was one night in particular when a friend and I had to get a 5 ft x 5 ft piece of chipboard, spray-painted gold, across the city at 2 am, for reasons too complicated to get into here. The girl who was helping me was about 5-foot-nothing, and 90 lbs soaking wet, and completely disappeared behind the chipboard as we were hauling. People were very drunk, and very confused by the two weird nerds hauling the massive board around.
I always love watching people on trains, especially like east coast. If I get bored just walking through all the carriages looking at the different people haha
This song reminded me of the time I was dating my now-wife. I had to travel for about 2 hours from her house to mine, and I met some... Interesting folks along that way. I especially dreaded the commute when there was a big football game on. Even though i would be drinking myself, I'd still be annoyed with drunk folks. Also I feel your pain replacing toilet seats 😅
Last time I tried to catch the last train home (2023), the concert I was at overran and I missed it. I ended up running to get the last night bus, and if you could see me you'd know I'm not built for running! So yeah, I am more inclined to drive now...
great song!! brings back memories. the dude next to me on a long-haul trip to DC a few years back fell asleep on my shoulder four separate times. total stranger, but he was so embarrassed and apologetic after each accidental nap that i didn’t have the heart to wake him from any of them. poor guy must have needed the rest lol
I last rode a train about 30 years ago. (Apart from the larger cities, they're just not a thing here in the States.) And it wasn't the last train, just to/from a day of consulting in New York. The morning journey did involve a really, _really_ bad bagel from a vending machine, though.
I think a "perfect" performance (rather than a recording) inevitably includes mistakes - I don't think anybody in the audience in Winchester would think that the "I forgot my Kazoo" mistake and subsequent performance was anything other than "perfect" 😀 Oh, and you missed my self-follow-up post gig - yes, we did both enjoy it.
I live and work near a major bus line, so most days, commuting is no big deal. However, if I go to see a late show downtown, things get a little wonky. Got to figure out which bus or train leaves in time to catch the connection home, and hope they are running on time to avoid a long walk home if it gets messed up somehow.
When I was in school sometimes I had to catch some of the late night buses to get home. It really is interesting the kind of people you meet on those late nights. Any particularly interesting specimens that stick in your head?
Repairing the broken toilet seat, did you call somebody to fix it, did you call sombody over as you have no desire to do this with or without a hangover 🤣 Hope your dog is okay. I remember the time having to take my and my wife's dog to the vet as she was ill after pulling over a bin, ripping the bag open to dig out the bones from the buffalo wings I cooked up earlier 🤣 Ahh yes the last train, like everyone I have definitely been the drunk person striking up random conversations after a good night out 😂
Having always lived in the suburbs/rural areas, I can’t imagine not driving! Your droll descriptions of your fellow riders give me anxiety, TBH. Have you never wanted to learn to drive? Or maybe I’m assuming you don’t know how to drive & rather, you simply choose not to. Enjoyable, as always ❤
Thanks Tom! I did. And,er, relesing your new album on Fiday the 13th? Is that waise? Any way, I will definately be here watching the live stream on youtube!!! Merry chirstmas,Tom!
Replacing a toilet seat is much harder than you'd expect, isn't it?!? I'm embarrassed to admit my dad and I struggled for far too long on mine when I replaced that. I'd probably rather try that again than get a late night train though!
Can you do one about being forced to break a 20 for a matter of two pennies, the cashier just looks you straight in the face while she hands you back 98 cents, and then on your way back to the car you find two pennies on the ground in the parking lot? Or from the opposite perspective, a well-to-do looking customer raising an uproar over an expired 10 cent coupon? Y'know... something like "I Love Going to The Supermarket" lol
there's nothing quite like accidentally catching the wrong last train home. i wasn't drunk. honest! just more befuddled than usual. p.s. i think we need a song about the broken toilet seat.
This song definately needs at least another verse. Superb. ❤

I usually end up on the last train because I’ve aimed for the penultimate one only to find that one has been cancelled 🤦♂️
Loving this series!!
A delightful set of anthropology notes.

Awesome work, thanks for the update.

Thank you for your art... it really makes me happy. I wonder if you could do a cover of Gwibdaith Hen Fran's bitxiamo... I would love that!

Oops, I almost forgot: I took my granddaughter on a scenic train ride circa 2012. That was a lot of fun and she absolutely loved it!
Bingo!

Replacing the toilet seat yourself? I’m surprised you didn’t call someone to fix it!
