Mazzy, Thank You for showcasing The Bee Gee's. It's a shame they're only remembered for their Disco Hits. Mining Disaster,Holiday, and Run To Me my favorite songs.
Totally in agreement with you about the early BeeGees, Mazz, and 10CC’s Original Soundtrack. Still have my first copy. Saw them in Boston in the fall of ‘75 and they were awesome.
Nice video, Mazzy. Great to hear you tell (as usual knowledgeable) about 10 CC. I thought I was about the only one in the VC that remembered - and liked - them... 🙂 And you're right: "The Original Soundtrack" is their masterpiece - but their 4.th album "How Dare You" also still holds up. After this they split up - and none of them reached the same heights.
So nice to see some love for those early Bee Gee’s albums, I love that debut album, I consider it one of the best albums of 1967. I also like the next four albums up to Odessa. ✌️
Holiday was the first song I ever heard from The Bee Gees too. I really liked their 60s stuff as much as I hated their disco stuff. Original Sound Track is my favorite by 10cc, and most of those songs got regular airplay on LA FM radio. I saw them in concert when they toured that album and it was an excellent show. Thanks for the video.
In the early '70s, Joseph Byrd took a teaching job at Cal State Fullerton and taught a course in traditional American popular music. There was a group called The American Music Consort, of which he was the musical director. I have their album, which is on John Fahey's Takoma Records, and features popular songs by Stephen Foster and Henry Clay Work. Quite a departure from the great electronic psychedelia of United States of America!
You’re right about Bee Gee’s 1st. Completely forgotten about it. They were formidable with “Holiday” and “To Love Somebody”. But the record was inconsistent and not every song was as memorable and worthy of The Ed Sullivan Show. “New York Mining Disaster 1941” was almost a hit if I remember. Thanks for covering River. Might suggest Romeo Void and Lee Michaels in the future if they held a special place for you in the past.
Greetings from Radio Tower Records, Berlin. The Original Soundtrack is indeed a stunning record. When the initial music press reviews came out the line from ‘I’m Not In Love’ was singled out: 'I keep your picture/ upon the wall / it hides a nasty stain that’s lying there’. Priceless. As good as this record is though, I believe Sheet Music tops it with it’s virtually flawless no filler ten songs. A great band.
Great video. I live not far from Strawberry Studios in Stockport, Greater Manchester where 10CC recorded. It deserves it's own documentary. Close to Strawberry is the former site of The Sinking Ship where Wimple Winch played. Often cited as the progenitors of Freakbeat
I used to buy records via the cover art, as well!! That is how I acquired Steely Dan's Aja. Also, Tracy Chapman's debut. Squeeze's Cosi Fan Tutti Frutti.
The Original Soundtrack was a an album cover, as smitten as I was by The Rollers as a kid grabbed my attention and when you got it, there was the innovations, the witty lyrics with brilliant punnery. Strawberry Studios was in Stockport, pre 1974 was the largest town in Cheshire, just south of Manchester which I know well although that's not in our region. I do have the "unreleased" DCC Gold (it went to Mofi last minute!) on cd which is really good sounding. Anyway thanks for the video from deepest darkest North Staffordshire, home of the UK Ceramics industry.
The 1976 Terry Reid album is Seed of Memory, produced by his friend Graham Nash, who sings on it as well. It has some soulful favorite tracks. Saw him live in SF a while back, he sounded pretty good for someone about to hit 70. Fan of the United States album as well.
Thanks very much, Mazzy. Picked up the YMG Colossal Youth deluxe reissue when it came out. Love “Music For Evenings” and “Final Day”. Great band that did a lot with very little, arrangement-wise. Didn’t become aware of The United States Of America until recently, somehow missed them for almost 50 years! As a Broadcast fan, I often saw comparisons to TUSOA. Very happy to finally discover them!
Norman; I also had the USoA album in 1968; i was 20. I also bought albums by the covers, whether I thought the band was hip or not. At the time the only song I liked was Love Song For The Dead Che, but I will revisit it now after hearing your review. Thanks, Joe in Tampa (longtime subscriber.)
The Appletree Theatre-Playback and The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band-Part 1 both released in 1967, come to mind as amazing albums that were in a similar vain of exploring new boundaries of music too imo!
I've never owned a Terry Reid album, I saw him along with Tina Turner open for the stones in 69. While Tina tuner did her set I kept thinking, how are the stones going to top that, and out came Terry Reid and my thought was no way are my beloved stones going to top that. The stones put my fears to bed. For those who have never heard Terry Reid, they should give him a listen.
Hi Mazzy, I listened to Colossal Youth only a couple of hours ago. Great album, definitely a contender for one of the bands who only released one album but the album was fantastic. Andy
Nice selection as usual! A few that I am not familiar with that I will check out. I have the Mono Sundazed TUSOA, is it better in Stereo? Those Bee Gees harmonies.. nothing like them. I recommend the Bee Gees documentary in case you haven't seen it yet. Chris Martin's praise of them says it all. And finally, "I'm Not In Love" what a masterpiece. Brings back memories of FM radio when I was 7yo 💜
The United States Of America is a standout album. So happens, that LP was a major influence on my favorite band of the 00's, Broadcast of Birmingham England. A band so unique they are difficult to label, experimental electronic-dream pop psychedelia-surreal song craft with a dash of Sci-Fi sound track...?
I recall buying the United States of America album in the spring, at last two or three months before Sgt Pepper was released. They must have been playing it on KMPX. Reasonably sure I made the purchase at the New Geology Rock Shop on Frederick and Stanyan.
Wonderful stuff, as usual. Oddly, though I love 10cc, I've never been keen on The Original Soundtrack. Far prefer other discs by them. In fact, one of the best tracks from that period only came out as a B-side. Check out Channel Swimmer, which emerged as a bonus tracks on the CD. Love it and it takes me right back to those times.
I enjoy learning about music and watching music documentaries. Your videos are often like a little mini-documentary and are the best on UA-cam IMO. I remember listening to "I'm Not In Love" on the radio on vacation at the beach when I was 9 or 10 and thought the harmonies and sound effects were amazing. Then shortly afterwards, Billy Joel pretty much recreated the sound on "Just the Way Your Are".
There's really no need to apologize for being from Australia. There is however a great need to apologize for America. We're quite alright, actually, us Australians. Greetings from Sydney...
I was so happy back in 1987 when United States Of America were re-issued. I was so curious. And it had a reputation as an early synthesizer featuring pop album. Does anybody know what that Durrett Synthesizer looked like? I perceived it as a satirical album in many ways. But I'm not a native speaker so I might miss certain things.
hey mazzy, you ever come across,Lothar and The Hand People or "The Silver Apples"? 2 other early bands that had early electronic instrumentation,id love to have all 4 albums by those 2 bands too.
For clarity: the first two 10cc albums that preceded The Original Soundtrack, were on UK Records, not London Records. Personally I consider the follow up album, How Dare You, to be their masterpiece, but all of their first four albums are brilliant on many levels. Glad I saw them on the tour for Soundtrack in the fall of ‘75, fourth row center at The Beacon Theater in NYC.
hey mazzy...where to begin...all great albums indeed...not so familiar with young marble giants, but other than that....the bee gees were at their best on their early albums...trafalger to me me is a classic piece of wax....and their early 'hits' like i started a joke, massachusetts the greatest man in the world, and how can you mend a broken heart (among many others)...so good...and terry reid...the unsung hero of singers...not only wanted for zeppelin, but he also turned down deep purple....and river is a breath-taking album....10cc...if i were to ever make a 'cover' album of songs, i'm not in love would be my first choice....i have always loved that song (and the rest of their stuff ain't too bad either)....and i love the tear on the united states of america sleeve...if you think about the time it was released, the black movement was in full swing and it's like they're trying to break out on the united states of america....very cool...this series is very cool...may you keep it going and keep yourself going as well...stay well..stay strong..peace my friend..rocky
I really regret selling my copy of the United States of America it still had the envelope it came in and everything and I traded it like a dumbass...😕🙂
Hey Mazzy, i hardly do any comments on videos but i have to say you know your shit. rarely ever some folks here in the VC can say anything about the records or the artists (especially when buying these pricey reissues and proudly show the world what they can afford on spending serious money in every release they can get they're hands on), but you can talk a bit about it and share some information and i like that. Cheers from Berlin Germany, Michael
Thank you Michael. I grew up and lived with this music. I adore it all and it’s never simply been about a buy a play and file away. Some I’ve played more than others, and this series showcase some I’ve been spinning lately ✌🏼
Ten cc is sperm count or volume? I doubt that. Volume would be measured in ml - milliliters. The measurement cc is cubic centimeters, and if you look at your ruler you’ll see that 10 cc would be like the volume of a golf ball. Let’s just say that Ten CC is obscure for now.
Mazzy, where do you put 10cc in your library? alphabetizing them is not really possible....never have known how to find their LP's after filing away....suggestions? Original Soundtrack is great, wish I could find it....Graham Gould has a bunch of hits, Hollies, Yardbirds, to his credit, outside of 10cc.
Early years newspapers route, lawn mowing and gardening help for neighbors. At 13 Bar Mitzvah money. Then summer camp intern and projects here and there. Even our band at 14 played some parties and teen clubs and got paid.
Mazzy, Thank You for showcasing The Bee Gee's. It's a shame they're only remembered for their Disco Hits. Mining Disaster,Holiday, and Run To Me my favorite songs.

I'm just amazed at the wealth of your musical knowledge. I learn something in every video.
It was a CBS Sampler album "The Rock Machine Turns You On" that turned me on to the United States of America & many other artists.
So nice to see some love for those early Bee Gee’s albums, I love that debut album, I consider it one of the best albums of 1967. I also like the next four albums up to Odessa. ✌️

Saw and enjoyed 10CC - good shows - One night in Paris: fun and tight harmonies

Onya Mazzie! The lyrics and humour of 10CC have always been their gift. Remember too "Dreadlock Holiday" ?? An all-time classic.
I used to buy records via the cover art, as well!! That is how I acquired Steely Dan's Aja. Also, Tracy Chapman's debut. Squeeze's Cosi Fan Tutti Frutti.
Bought the USA album when it came out, and absolutely loved it. "Clouds" "Coming Down" and electric drums! As you said, great headphone album.

I’ll check some of these out! Thank you! I actually wound up buying The Van Morrison album from a. Video you did last year. Ray C.
Woo, all great records. I adore that United States of America LP. Wish I still had my original copy, although it did have an unfortunate warp.

The Bee Gees 1st is a awesome record. I found my German first press two weeks ago. 5€ for a vg++ record
Do I see a faint hint of ring wear on that Bee Gees record?😂🤨🤟
I had USA, a friend has the CD. You can hear the album on youtube.
That Bee Gees album needs reissuing! Analogue. 200 gram vinyl. Gatefold. Extra photos. Poster. Sensible price. I am not asking for much.
Agree. Rhino did just this with a nice box of their first three w an lp of alternates for each record. But that was a dozen years ago.
Didn't Stuart Moxham have another band called The Gist? I really liked "Embrace the Herd", that was all I ever heard.
Looks like some ringwear on that Bee Gees 1st....
