The "best" Zep song in my opinion needs to showcase their ability to combine folk-ish acoustic with electric energy, feature early Plant vocals, and have a good balance of their light and shade theme. To me that's Over The Hills And Far Away.

Great analysis, Abigail. This is always been my favorite album for a whole bunch of reasons. The band had been hanging out with Fairport convention and had spent a lot of time with Richard Thompson and the others playing acoustic instruments from all over the world. These were the seeds of what would be called world music 20 years later, I also love the fact that this album is known for its folk influence, but immigrant song is the hardest rock song of all time. ❤you’ve inspired me to listen again.
LZ III is very special to me. It was probably the first rock album I listened to all the way through. I was still making my way out of classical-only fandom and saw it on the top of the stack that my brother, home for the Uni holidays, had left by the living room sound system. No one was home one rainy afternoon when, after school had finished for the year, I put it on and lay on the couch and just let it play. I think the whole of side one is a blast (especially the heavy riffing) and was charmed by the acoustic dominance of the second side. I had known the band name and a few songs but this was more like listening to classical as there were phases to move through and clear emotional textures. Oh, and the music was overwhelming. I'd been making inroads into the music prescribed for normal teenagers (you don't want to be a classical fan in mid-'70s North Queensland and under the age of 60) but this record gave me a peak to climb. Thanks for the retake, another morning elevator. Ta.
Zep 3 is like Beggars Banquet for the Stones and Rubber Soul for The Beatles. All the pieces came together and set them up for the future. Great review Abigail. For the trivia nerds Jimmy plays bass on Tangerine. Thanks Abigail for recognizing Crowleys importance. Jimmy and Bowie were big followers of his works. Interesting note is Crowley died 1947. Also died in 1930 in that he faked his death as a joke. He also in 1909 put together a collection of his works under the title The Winged Beetle. And it makes me wonder

My personal favorite Led Zeppelin album. "Tangerine", "Immigrant Song", "Since I Been Loving You", "Bron-Yr-Aur- Stomp", "That's the Way" & "Celebration Day" are amazing. The folk & Celtic rock elements really are most fully represented on this recording.
I wish this album had Hey Hey What Can I Do? and Poor Tom but I do like it. I found a rip from a vintage reel to reel copy and it's extraordinary, the best I've ever heard Zep III sound.

...here's my next comment! When you get to Presence, try to forget all the other stuff you've heard. A lot of people - I guess of all ages - really rank it too low in the Zep catalog IMHO. Well, my 26yo son loves it, especially Achilles :) You have a very good and discerning ear - I subscribed and I'm looking forward to reading your review. The main thing people whine about is that it has no acoustic songs (and even almost none of the famous Page "light and shade"). But keep in mind these things - 1) Page's previous "where they were at that time" statement, 2) Jones was unhappy and Peter Grant had to talk him out of quitting to become the Choir Master / Musical Director at a big English Church, 3) Bonzo was drinking heavily and was a borderline alcoholic who was becoming nastier and nastier to be around at times, 4) Page was in the throes of herion addiction, 5) Plant was in a wheelchair, 6) manager Peter Grant and main roadie/hitman Richard Cole were both heavy drinkers and drug users. Plant rented a beach house in Malibu to recover, Page met him there eventually, and they started writimg songs. They then moved on to Musicland Studios in Munich to meet Jones and Bonham... see the next installment...

Getting older and buying the album on a CD I finally got to revisit it fully (album was an old, long gone buddy's). It not only brings back that mystic quality and the usual nostalgia, but I started really hearing things with new ears. If it's not my favorite, it's never runs less than second place.

Fitting video for my feed, because in a few weeks the Zeppelin tribute band Zoso is coming to town. I’ve seen them once before and they are INCREDIBLE.
I have produced 3 albums at Ardent and got to use the console LZ3 was mixed on. Just listen to any Big Star album and you'll notice the similarity of the sound of the Acoustic Guitars. There is magic there
When I was asked what my favorite Led Zeppelin album was a few years ago, as Led Zepp is my favorite band, I surprised myself by answering LZ III. My mom used to play this album when my sister and I were little when we were cleaning the house, and Bron-Y-Aur Stomp was the first Zepp somg I remember hearing ever. While i dont listen to the album all the time, I think its my favorite as a whole because of the nostalgic element it has for me! As by gods, Since Ive Been Loving You is my all time favorite Zepp song! It simply cant be beat. Overall, an underrated queen of an album! Plus, love how you always bring an interesting perspective to reviewing some of the best records around! Amazing video as usual! ✨🎸
In 1970 I set off on the bus to Wilson Pecks in Sheffield to buy LZIII, I returned without it as it cost £2, 8shillings not the £2, 3 shillings I had in my pocket. The fancy cover was the reason given for the extra cost. In 2007 I spent more than £1000 to travel and see Zeppelin at the O2, times change.
Led Zeppelin was/is my favorite band. SIBLY was/is a rip my heart open and leave it lying there bleeding song. I used the opening 5 notes as a coolness test. I was fortunate enough to see them in '77 at MSG in NYC. The best show *ever*. The only one I went to sober. This is my first time here and I already love you. Platonically, of course, unless you've got [grand]daddy issues. If your appreciation of LedZep didn't get me (or your beauty, or fashion sense), your idioms would. After saying it for almost half a century, you are the only other person I've heard say, "CSN and sometimes Y." Yes, I'm sorry but it's true: I love you.
Immigrant Song beat is one of my favorite right foot exercise patterns for honing my drum kit skills. The back to back doubles without a double kick pedal plus the pause for the snare to snap through is intense training.
I really love your channel miss Devoe. You unveil music to be seen as something more than just “listening” (which is already a great thing on its own) but you show music culture and its counter culture in such a wide and informative way. Thanks for doing it
Ha, that’s funny as hell that I happened to see your comment! Cuz I was just saying that to a friend, cuz I’m like if ya here drums now days and ya happen to here a squeak in the drum part specifically it would most likely come from the bass kick drum, well I guess it could be from the hi-hat pedal to I suppose, but you’d definitely know it’s not a sampled drum machine then. And plus drummers and studio people most likely learned from John Bonham recordings to make sure your pedals are well oiled! 🤣 I was thinkin of Bonham when I was telling my friend that…….🤘🏼 ✌🏼
I Adore this album. After a "greatest hits" introduction at a party in my place, went the very next day to the record store & let out: "I'm buying every Led Zeppelin record". III was the first one I connected with & in a deep way. I consider IV the best one & find myself playing II constantly. III is "my" Led Zeppelin record. To me a word like Masterpiece falls way to short... I can relate completely to the feel of the songs somehow.
IMO, Side two is what makes this album so special. The three song run of Tangerine, That's the Way, and Bron-Y-Stomp are the backbone of the folksy side of Led Zepplin. Abbey already hit on what's so good about Tangerine and TTW so I would like to talk about BYS. IMO BYS is one of the most rhythmically infectious songs I have ever heard. I love the way the songs builds adding instraments one at a time. It sets up the rythem with the guitar. Then adds the bass drum. followed the country scat vocals, Then the claping. And finally the castanet. Aside from a few seconds of great guitar picking at aboyt 3 minutes, every single note of thes song is rythmic gold. Side notes: I love sing Gallows Pole for this record, becuse the folk theme of side two needed a traditinal folk song to go iwth the original material. I think they nail it and you could proably look at this as a side two "four song run". (2) Another favorite folksy Zep tune is Black Country Women !
Pages rhythmic acoustic playing on Bron Yr Aur Stomp is out of this world, especially during the break where he goes solo and changes the beat half way through it.
It almost seems like a universal experience to have an intense Zeppelin phase in middle or high school but fall off on listening to them pretty hard. It’s nice that this review has made me wanna return to their full albums with new perspective
Bonzo's squeaky drum pedal was what rejuvenated my love/interest for "Since I've Been Loving You". Never noticed it until another music freak pointed it out to me in the '90s sometime. Great review, Abby. This was my first foray into your channel (eww, that sounded dirty-sorry). I'm looking forward to much more. Thank You!
Abigail, Amazing WORK !!! First came across with this Album in the late 70's your insights enlighten eras I never noticed and equality important emphasis other parts in a way that made me revising the all listening experience to a different level . THANKS FOR BEING THERE . :)
I totally hear the squeaky kick pedal in Since I’ve Been Lovin’ You. I also hear it in Ten Years Gone. I played in a band with a drummer that, like Bonham, used a Ludwig Speed King pedal (or as we called the Squeak King). His squeaked also - the rumor is that they all squeaked, it was part of their charm.
I'm glad you like Lester Bangs. I never knew he wrote for RS. I was familiar w his earlier work w Creem. I thought he needed a strong man pulling on each shoulder for his love of Punk , and his not realizing that Progressive had all the energy, but was more interesting . But his writing style stood out as being real and heart felt as opposed to the over intellectual Robert Christo whatever who thought he was the albums teacher giving them As Bs and Cs.
Led Zeppelin III is (probably) my favorite Led Zep record. I never noticed the squeaky kick pedal on "Since I've Been Loving You" until it was released on CD. Digital releases revealed a lot about our favorite music's "imperfections" that wasn't discernable before due to the lower fidelity of LPs.
It took me a while.....but LZ3 has become my second fave Zep album after Physical Graffiti. Tangerine, Friends and That's The Way are my highlights here. Great video once again!
I grew up in a very conservative area of Tennessee. We didn't have much Led Zeppelin play on the radio or for sale in my area. But in 1991, I started working for a Classic Rock radio station. The first one in the area. We played everything Led Zeppelin had. Even on the first Sunday of every month, we played everything a particular band has. Led Zeppelin was our first one. Just blew me away with everything I heard and loved their music ever since! I'm still all about Classic Rock... It's all I listen to today.
I really enjoyed this as a Zep fan going back to Yardbird days when I still had my milk teeeth. You know your stuff and not just Valley Girl level either - enlightened, informative and entertaining. The turning point for my true dedication came with Tangerine LZ version) and seeing them in London during '75 at Earls Court. This was better than a lot of the books I've read about the band from male journalists only interested in myths.
I would say it all came together for them on Since I've Been Loving You. Finally, they did the blues their way and not the standard 12 bar. However, for another choice, go to Coda and listen to Wearing and Tearing. It'll melt your speakers....
Nice insight - for 40 years I've thought Since I've Been Loving You was the greatest song ever. Still can't think of something that definitively beats it. The Page/Plant tours in 95/96 when they did Since I've Been Loving You and incorporated part of Tea For One was the most amazing thing ever. Cheers!
I watch all your album studies. Having lived thru most of these album releases; I get such a kick out of the way you do your research. Ironically this album was my first Christmas album from my parents the year it was released. Keep up the good work young lady ~The Smirking Guru
Killer album! I was a high schooler when this was released. My outlook on rock n roll was fundamentally changed. What a band! Great review too, Thanks Abigail.
I ruined my copy by pulling the wheel out so I could see all the pictures. I used to put it on the turntable. A lot of people were apparently bummed about the direction they went on this but I love it. "BROHM - WHARR".
Zep III is my favorite Zep album. I always love when Jimmy plays light acoustic fingerstyle parts. Bonham, as usual, came up with some amazing colors within his drumming for the unique style of this album. Example - the double clapper (hand-held) in the background of Gallow's Pole. Thanks for this video11
My favorite Zeppelin record. While I can't say it's the one with the overall best performances collectively or individually. I love the warmth of all the acoustic material & even on a mellower record, Immigrant Song brings the thunder like few other Zeppelin songs. And the fact that it's still thing seen a bit of the redheaded stepchild of their classic run of their first six albums gives it an underdog energy that is also enduring to me.
Vinyl collecting is one of my favorite hobbies! I am new to this channel and I'm very pleased with your videos! I'm sure you get a ton of recommendations but you might enjoy a band called return to forever. They're one of my fav prog bands
Sorry, I can't pick (or incapable of picking) a "best" song or album, like other bands of their stature. I love how you break it on down, song by song, with your takes on the music on 3, which I totally agree with you on. I tend to like or love the lesser known songs of a given artist. Zep 3 is a unique mix of blues, folk, raga and hard rock, etc. with a heavy side and then the lighter side. Truly unique among all the great albums available. Keep spinning Sister Devoe...
@@abigaildevoeI thought you would have covered it whenever you mentioned it in Led Zeppelin one album review but I also forgot about the album as well 😅
This is an awesome album! Zeppelin really liked to have fun with their album packaging (I still have the brown paper packaging with my copy of "In Through the Out Door", and the sleeve has been water colored). My favorite track on this one will always be "Immigrant Song". Besides being an absolute banger, my great grandparents immigrated from Norway. So my father always joked that that track was their theme song. 🧊🤘🧊
Great review Abby. I do think Eva von Zeppelin was German, not Danish, although I have not been able to find any definitive proof. But certainly Ferdinand and his family were from the North of Germany (the nobles of the hamlet Zepelin - spelled with 1 p). It's fairly close to Denmark which is probably why Eva decided to be offended by the Copenhagen gig.
Great job Abby. My favourite LZ song depends on whatever is happening around me at any point in time. In November, in Central England, with mists and fog and frost, it’s “ No Quarter”. Stay safe, stay happy, stay you.
It has always been one of my favorite LZ albums since I first got to know it back in early mid-70's. It has such an amazing atmosphere to it... When I first heard the squeak of the bass drum pedal I can't un-hear it anymore.
3 to me was Zeppelin's "let's take a break and throw the critics a curveball" record. As great as it is, for me it was missing something vital. It sounded like it had no foundation like the 2 previous albums. Still a good album to listen to when you want to listen to Led Zeppelin....but you don't really. It's that different from the rest of their discography. Best Moment on this record: Plant's blood curdling scream in Since I been loving you. The most emotion I ever heard from Plant up to that point. BTW, Zep's best song is Kashmir. This was a fun one to do. Thank you.
You have brought me back to my youth so eloquently but would love to hear a little more music during your discussion and understand how there are restrictions. You mentioned Indian music is in Zep music. I believe it is Moroccan music since they spent so much time there. The thing about music is it is personal. My favorite songs are Gallows Pole and Since I been loving you..
Out of all of the classic led Zeppelin albums this is the one that took the most time to grow on me and its not as brash and heavy as the first 2 albums this one starts off with a bang with the immigrant song and then its a gentler and more melodic album as you get deeper into it this is a good bridge between the folkier and introspective led Zeppelin that would continue well into their career and the heavy stadium rock gods that they would become known for
I've always thought Since I've Been Loving You is a PERFECT song. They had so sharpened this song by the time of III it could not be stopped. But i agree with a ranking list i saw several years ago, maybe Rolling Stone, Over the Hills and Far Away is the best of all Zeppelin worlds in 4:42. Their overall, best song and a top 100 hit for a minute. Finally That's the Way is my sentimental favorite. Used to sing it all the time once i figured out how to play it in Standard tuning.
Can't name a "best" LZ song, but 'Tangerine' is always in my top 5 Zep tracks. And 'Since I've been...' is The Best British Blues song ever recorded imo! So there's that. Excellent review Abby, thanks!! 🎸🎶 P.S.: Ten Years Gone is another fave.
My LZ journey started with the release of HOTH, I absolutely love that album! But LZIII is probably my favorite to this day. I still have the "Immigrant Song" single backed with "Hey, Hey What Can I Say," for me that completes the package,
Immigrant Song is a perfect opening song!!! Love it! As a kid I was pretty disappointed by the second side of the record, but now LZ III ranks in the upper half of their catalog. A great record!
I know there's so many albums to cover and certainly not enough time to do them all, but I'm just wondering if or when there may be a 70s Heart album on the horizon. There is a lot of material to discuss there. I know it's a ways off, but 2026 is the 50th anniversary of their debut.
what’s the best zeppelin song? comment below!
The "best" Zep song in my opinion needs to showcase their ability to combine folk-ish acoustic with electric energy, feature early Plant vocals, and have a good balance of their light and shade theme. To me that's Over The Hills And Far Away.
Hats off to Roy Harper
There really is no "best" Led Zeppelin song, but I've always been especially fond of Over The Hills And Far Away. Of course, You Shook Me is a classic

There is magic there
What's Going Ahn ?
Excellent album review of an obvious underrated classic Led Zeppelin classic!!
Thanks for doing it
Hear the squeak? Yes. Each time the pedal springs back.
I feel ya
This was awesome. Your channel completely rules.
What a wonderful job tangerine and that’s the way gets me every time
IMO, Side two is what makes this album so special.
LZ wedged III between II and IV brilliantly.
I didn't have the same pedal but I had the exact squeak. I recognized it right away 😅 it was a Slingerland pedal.
I love every stinking Zeppelin album before Presence. This band holds so much joy for my preteen/teenage self.
We’re all Devoe. Led Zep III is my favorite album from them. Thanks for the review.
It's all I listen to today.
the fit for the trout mask replica video is gonna go crazy
tophat required, fish head likely
I really enjoyed this as a Zep fan going back to Yardbird days when I still had my milk teeeth. You know your stuff and not just Valley Girl level either - enlightened, informative and entertaining. The turning point for my true dedication came with Tangerine LZ version) and seeing them in London during '75 at Earls Court. This was better than a lot of the books I've read about the band from male journalists only interested in myths.
errrhm. 3 is probably my favorite because its so felt yet, cool and somewhat brief. Totally iconic and extra all at the same time. CELEBRATION DAY!
I would say it all came together for them on Since I've Been Loving You. Finally, they did the blues their way and not the standard 12 bar. However, for another choice, go to Coda and listen to Wearing and Tearing. It'll melt your speakers....
Loved your smart and insightful summation of the album. Makes me appreciate it even more now.
My favourite Led Zep album. "Since I've been loving you" sends chills up my spine. Thanks for the review.
Abby, thanks for your review. I'm going to sit down and re-listen to this album with more focus. Have a great day!
my first vinyl monday on time after a mini channel binge !! i’m so excited about the episode :D
Hi Abby great job describing these records I am pretty sure even people who don't like these records probably like them after seeing your videos.
You can totally heart the squeak of Bonzo’s Ludwig Speed King bass drum pedal.
Led Zeppelin is back on the channel and it’s been a bit 😂🎉
Little Games by the Yardbirds should get covered one day
i really need to stop forgetting little games exists, it's worth a try
@@abigaildevoeI thought you would have covered it whenever you mentioned it in Led Zeppelin one album review but I also forgot about the album as well 😅
@@nvm9040 Little Games has many samples of future Led Zeppelin songs.
@@jvnb-y9e ikr exactly
This was the first Zeppelin album I listened to as well, maybe it’s cause I naturally love folk rock but it’s still my favourite Zeppelin album
Led Zep III was my first Zep album. My brother bought it for me when I was 12 in 1981.
My brother and I are still alive !!
Friends is one of the most ominous Zeppelin songs & an excellent one.
It has always been one of my favorite LZ albums since I first got to know it back in early mid-70's. It has such an amazing atmosphere to it... When I first heard the squeak of the bass drum pedal I can't un-hear it anymore.
Glad I stopped scrolling when I saw your beautiful smile. Abigail, you are very talented, bravo!
i tell you this album is pure GOLD (also pls talk bout' presence too, it's probably my fav LZ album, it's awesome)
This is amazing! Great analysis
Thank you.
❤ it was a cool ride in Abi's time machine
You have brought me back to my youth so eloquently but would love to hear a little more music during your discussion and understand how there are restrictions. You mentioned Indian music is in Zep music. I believe it is Moroccan music since they spent so much time there. The thing about music is it is personal. My favorite songs are Gallows Pole and Since I been loving you..
Great documentary ! You Rock!!
Out of all of the classic led Zeppelin albums this is the one that took the most time to grow on me and its not as brash and heavy as the first 2 albums this one starts off with a bang with the immigrant song and then its a gentler and more melodic album as you get deeper into it this is a good bridge between the folkier and introspective led Zeppelin that would continue well into their career and the heavy stadium rock gods that they would become known for
Zeppelin III got me through tough times, great album start to finish
P.S.: Ten Years Gone is another fave.
