I've got a big soft spot for Husbands of Rover Song, I adore that episode
My favourite because...
It's the River Christmas Special!
Sad?
Maybe.
It also raised the question of what happened to the wives of River Song?
And could Sky Silvestri have been #2?
Such a long shot.
But in the Whoniverse...??
@@OnASeasideMission it closes the loop on River so well imo, bringing it back to the singing towers that were mentioned in her first appearance
@@aeloswindrunner To be honest, I always thought that her arc was badly underwritten, if that's the term.
'Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead' raised so many questions.
The answers were a bit of a let down.
It’s a terrible episode imo, but the ending is great
Especially when you watch back-to-back with Silence In the Library. Suddenly you understand all the foreshadowing and it makes it even more tragic / beautiful.
I’ve only been able to watch modern Who and honestly the Smith era has some very good specials.
A Christmas Carol
The Snowmen
And Time of the Doctor are all stellar stories.
(This is also an excuse to plug in that 7B had 2 specials that were SO GOOD that you must now watch how good 7B is)
7B was rubbish though
The specials are the only good thing about 7B
Well, you are right about The Snowmen
I personally love Return of Doctor Mysterio with it just being a fun superhero story with a doctor who twist. The dialogues got lots of great quotes and nardole being vastly improved from “Husbands”.
Sidenote: I love the conversation on the fire escape with the Doctor and Grant.
The Wintertime Paradox has my favorite 9th Doctor Christmas story
Spoilers:
The 9th Doctor is looking for some action by going to planets at times where there is supposed to be a disaster. Instead he finds out that his other incarnations have all taken care of the issues and left Christmas letters for him and it ends with 9 opening a letter from the War Doctor.
Feast of Steven is still my favorite Christmas special and I will take that opinion to the grave
Some think the original is always the best🙃
I think you lie
"This place is a madhouse, it's all full of Arabs."
I wish it was still around to watch.
I hope that if/when The Dalek’s Master Plan gets an animated reconstruction, we still get The Feast Of Steven complete with Hartnell’s fourth wall break
I love that years ago Eastenders used to mention the Doctor Who Christmas special during it's own Christmas episode
wouldn’t be Christmas without one of Mrs. Baddeley’s plum puddings
Last Christmas has to be by far my favorite Christmas special. It came out the year my Popi died on Christmas morning and when I watched the episode a few days later, I bawled my eyes out and I still tear up even though I've probably seen it 3 or 4 times now. Not only is it just an amazing episode, it meant so much to 14 year old me. Another amazing video, too!!
Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without Mrs Baddeley's plum pudding!
2 mins 42 seconds - what a brilliant Christmas present for me! :) Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed it!
Thank *you* for your great work, it was a lovely story! I also have fond memories of reading Wetworld as a kid, one of my first Doctor Who books and still one of my favourites to this day
@@HarboWholmes Aw, cheers - that's lovely to hear. I'm going to be grinning right through into 2023 now!
i personally loved voyage of the damned a lot. it's one of ten's more lighthearted ones (but a bunch of people still die.... i guess that's the tenth doctor's era for you) so it's more of a go to when i don't feel like sobbing for 2 hours with the end of time lol. also i like that bit where he's trying to explain what christmas is about and goes "what am i on about my christmases are always like this". i like the lighthearted "oh yeah i do this kind of thing all the time" jokes from doctor who
10: Runaway Bride/Next Doctor.
11: Christmas Carol/Snowmen.
12: Husbands/Twice.
13: Eve of the Daleks.
Agreed 👍
The perfect sort of video to watch while huddled under a blanket with a nice cup of hot chocolate.
Got to give this video a like, I'm honestly amazed that a video that could so easily have not had this much work put into it really was this well researched!
Nick Frost is the ultimate casting for santa
I haven’t seen this yet but you better have put last Christmas for 12 😂
Edit: YESSSS THANK YOU THIS IS AN UNDERRATED GEM!! 🎉🎉🎉
Literally just started binging the NuWho Xmas specials yesterday. Brilliant timing, I forgot how much I love this show
Glad to hear some love for Last Christmas, I always seem to hear that people hate it. I never understood why people say that it was too silly because that is the point of it. Is a dream so it's not exactly going to be consistent with Doctor who's established reality
Genuinely love your videos so much, your video essays are acc very interesting. Hope you have a good Christmas if you see this.
The Wintertime Paradox is a great read but I'd say it's more about winter than Christmas. There are some great Christmas stories in there, even a Davros Christmas special, but I wouldn't say "We Will Feed You to the Trees" was a Christmas story.
You say classic who never had any dedicated specials, well, not quite. We got dedicated omnibus re runs through the 70’s at Christmas.
Their regeneration ones id say, but Christmas Carol for Smith and the father christmas one for Capaldi are amazing too
A Christmas Carol was the first Doctor Who episode I saw without a DVD or IPlayer.
Super great video and all of these stories sound great to anyone who wants more Doctor Who x-mas videos I recommend Joe Brennan and Aus Who Fan.
My favourite is Peter Capaldi's Last Christmas.Perfect mix of horror/Comedy.
Finally, some End of Time appreciation 😍
Hardly any Doctors even have a Christmas story! Hartnell, Tennant, Smith and Capaldi. That's it!
Oh, and McGann!
A Christmas Carol, Chimes of Midnight (I've got it on vinyl) and Relative Dimensions are my big three that I revisit every year, although Voyage of the Damned, End of Time and Return of Dr. Mysterio are favourites too.
I actually own the Ghosts of Christmas Short Trips collection too.
Thanks Harbo, great video! Series 8 reviews coming soon?
I recently watched 'The Christmas Invasion', which is my favourite as it is wacky and Christmassy.
The Underwater Menace feels like a Christmas special- a mad zealous pagan scientist and scream ‘nothing in the world can stop me now’ with mince pie contest. But it’s half missing which sucks.
My favorite one is the Christmas invasion right after the episode parting of the Waves which makes the doctor look really silly and a crown on top of his head and glasses cute funny witty charming and of course he's always saying I got a farting hard after he had his hand cut off
Honestly I can not wait for more Christmas specials in the future. Why have New Years Chibnall? Were you not a good boy and didn’t receive any VHS tapes and toys of DW? Resolution and Revolution Of The Daleks can easily be a Christmas specials, just have the exact same concept, but with a tree, snow and a turkey. Simple.
My personal favourites:
The End Of Time
The Snowmen
The Husbands Of River Song
Castle of Fear is one of the few 5th Doctor audios I can remember w/out wiki, mostly because I love the Rutan host.
Faction Paradox was not hell, it was GREAT, until they changed publisher and started charging way way WAY too much for each book. For the 8th Doctor I would say Chimes is probably best, but only because it's so hilarious at times. For emotional whallup though I might go for Snow, from Stranded 3, but it does have thick ties to the whole Stranded series so it is hard to single it out as standalone. I would agree with all your choices for modern WHO, no arguments.
You have a patron named "Boots." They don't play GW2 do they, hang out w/a guy called Wooden Potatoes? Just wondering. Entirely possible there is more than one Boots out there.
I seem to remember the short story where the first doctor and susan face down pirate aliens and inspire the story of peter pan being set at christmas, but idk lol
This video made me wonder... in written doctor who media, if there are two doctors in the same scene do they get labeled by their number? I would imagine "the doctor handed the doctor the paper and the doctor smiled" would be incredibly confusing to read 😅
I feel like I'm the only one who adores Time of the Doctor lol
After Moffat's last Christmas Special as my DW Christmas Special Tradition every Christmas, I listen to my Favourite Big Finish (I haven't listened to a lot) The Chimes of Midnight!!! I can Quote it Word for Word, It is a Great Story...I Don't Wanna Spoil It, Not with Christmas coming in less than 10 Days!!!!
The chimx in everything
doesnt the 5th doctor story spare parts take place on christmas? id give that a go
I rewatched the Xmas invasion and the runaway bride
A Christmas Carol. Thats the comment.
1:19 What special is this from?
That was from a BBC 1 ident (the thing that plays on screen while the continuity announcer tells you what's next). You should find it if you search for 'doctor who christmas ident'!
It's only like 20 seconds long, but it's one of the best 20 second blocks of my life🙃
My favorite is the çhaim 😅in every
Im not a christmas fan although i did like the christmas episodes although since they went i didnt really miss them and tbh i thought having more halloween based episodes would be interesting since there is so much to do with it although Pumpkin soldiers might be a little silly. I know Chibbnal did do a christmas episode in the Flux series but it was crap and halloween in name only so one day i really hope they have halloween episodes especially in the gap between series and christmas
Would any scary story qualify for Halloween? If so 8th Doctor is sewn up with The Red Lady.
How much did you pay for those big finish short story books? Or did you find a pdf online?
They're so rare and inaccessible physically I had to find pdfs
@@HarboWholmes Yeah they are idiotically pricey.
Nice list although I respectfully disagree on the end of time for 10’s best Christmas story for me that trophy goes to Voyage of the Dammed
This video made me realize that I have somehow never seen Last Christmas??
If you haven’t since you made this comment, watch it. One of 12’s best episodes.
So I've had absolutely no problem with this video.. up until you get to 10's Era. You said it was a tossup between the first and last specials, which means you're rating Christmas Invasion as the second best 10 christmas special. You're gonna rate The Christmas Invasion higher than The Runaway Bride? I understand that this is your list and you're entitled to your opinions, but that doesn't mean I have to agree with it, and this one thing, I very much have to disagree on. If anyone is interested, I'd be happy to go into reasons as to why I disagree, but unless asked I'll leave it at this. Otherwise fantastic list, definitely agree with the vast majority of your picks.

I was on board until you chose The End of Time
How was this a day ago tf
@@StarDiSaF probably released early for patrons or some shit
❤️
You didn't give me enough time to skip your intro mentioning your Azbantium subscriber (your advice from a previous video when I pointed out it was irritating)
Why is this the only thing you ever comment about? How can it possibly affect you that much?
Who else thinks Smith's Christmas Carol is overrated?
Not me - sorry - I love it, and it still has the power to get me brimming...
Based and Redpilled
I have come to the comments to shout into the void how much I hate Last Christmas. In my opinion it's the worst 12th Doctor special.
Honestly, I'm so tired of everyone insisting Doctor Who needs Christmas. It can get so obnoxious when you're not Christian, and every year this secular show about a time-traveling alien takes an episode out of its run to talk about how Christmas is the best thing ever and intertwined with being human. The Tennant ones are usually less egregious and are typically just regular episodes set during Christmas, but the Smith ones are downright excessive, as are the early Capaldi ones. I get that it's an important part of many fans' Christmas, but it's so tiresome when you don't celebrate the holiday.
It's not just for Christians, It's for people with other or non religions...It's a family celebration, celebrating the end of the year!!!
@@marionbaggins That is just factually wrong. It is literally a christian celebration of Jesus's birthday.
Number 13 has nothing worth watching.
In your opinion, which you’re allowed to have. But don’t go around think it’s fact. I could say the same about Number 3, Number 4, Number 5 and Number 10 but you’d get pissed off.
