Yeah, I grind up my leaves like this also, in fact I am doing some after our heavy winds subside hopefully later today. I never wear eye protection, and I usually just wear open toe slippers because screw safety 😂, but I do wear ear plugs and a dust mask. For years I bought a bale of alfalfa or horse bedding for mulch that always worked well, last year I did practically no gardening. I am really curious about how that cardboard breaks down on that spot, are you going to keep it moist? Or just leave it? Don’t forget to return to this spot this spring so we can see how it worked out 👍

😂 I was once a little careless with safety until one day a piece of rock flew in my eye while cutting stones, luckily I happened to choose to wear safety glasses that day just because. The plan was to keep it moist. I did for a week then I decided to just leave it. Now that you mention it, I'm curious about the cardboard too. I'll check on it later and come back with a quick update.

Quick update: the cardboard has almost completely broken down. I did find a couple of pieces, but they were broken down to the point of it being like a sheet of paper.
The soil has improved. I see worms now! I think I'll have to repeat this process. Short video coming too.

How long do you expect the cardboard to last? I think I will try and mulch the million leaves that fall this autumn and use it to improve soil for my fern garden im planning 😏

I actually don't know. I've gotta try my best to keep it moist at all times.
I've put cardboard and newspaper down in other spots last year/beginning of this year, and pieces have broken down, but there are still big parts that haven't because I didn't stay on top of it and it's been completely dry.
Try it though. Fern garden sounds interesting!
