They are honestly very naïve and Charles even called them out at the end for participating and even WORKING FOR the Kim government. I have no clue how Jordan Harbinger and his friend can still be so naïve and still participating after the show. Its shocking that they even had to interrupt and ask him so many silly questions when you'd think by now they would know a little bit about north korea and the people who have escaped. Not the brightest tools in the shed clearly and if they were the ones born in north korea they would likely still be there now... Charles even now shows his ingenuity and ability by learning how to program which you'd think people born in the USA would take advantage of learning such skills but neither one of them knew the first thing about programming..

This interview was VERY hard to watch😢 More like watching an interrogation not an interview. The way they interrupted him every minute of this video is so uncomfortable to watch. He doesn’t hardly ever get to finish a sentence. He’s side tracked while trying to keep a flow to his timeline. This is terrible and he had such a heroic story to tell☹️😞 Of all of the interviews I’ve watched of NK escapees, this was by far the hardest to watch because how terrible they treated him.
I completely agree. I have watched many interviews and this was very difficult to watch imo; they kept interrupting him and unnecessarily disrupting the flow and his train of thought making it impossible for him to finish his sentence.

I was stationed 13 miles from the DMZ 2015-16 and it always haunted me how much different life was just minutes north from me. Charles you are so brave and I congratulate you on your citizenship! Such a powerful story that needs to be heard by everyone.

I love this podcast! However, I'm so glad you do not often include a second interviewer - or in this case interrogator. That guy is hard to listen to. He interrupts constantly and states the utterly obvious over and over.
Forget about James Bond, his story is that of an action hero all on its own. Escaping N Korea twice, finding himself in the middle of nowhere in China after three days walking without food or water and unable to speak the language. From there not too many then make it to the US. Amazing story about his drive to live a free man is inspiring. From London, UK
I watched Yeonmi Park on Joe Rogan years ago and watched her again recently and then watched her on many other channels. Now I’m watching about other NK defectors and the stories are truly heartbreaking. It’s also incredibly interesting to realize this is going on right now. 😢 I wish these people the best and I pray the ones stuck there get an opportunity for true freedom. God Bless them. 🙏🏻 Hate to hear him getting scammed by a thieving pos and equating that with Capitalism being bad. I’ve lived here my whole life and would never go buy my own car by myself. This is a story of an incredibly strong, resilient person who had the courage to fight for his freedom even though he risked torture and death. Nothing supernatural about it.
I watched the whole video because I wanted to hear the whole story about Charles. Honestly, the two interviewers really didn’t know how to interview people and ask questions. They always interrupted him while he’s telling the story. Why not just let him to tell his story ? If you have any questions, you can ask later after finishing telling his whole story.

I get that it's THEIR show, Idt anyone will lose sight of that; but to have NO self control; speaking compulsively, making jokes, asking dumb questions & making even dumber comments incessantly-after Charles speaks a couple sentences, is just torturous. 1:50:00 let me clarify this part as a Mongolian. Mongolia is a democratic country which doesn’t deport north korean refugees or any other refugees back to their respective countries. If something we even help them to contact south korean embassy so that they can go there safely. In this part when he said “if they caught north koreans deep in south china, for example mongolia” i hope he was refering to inner mongolia (which is an autonomous region in china) BUT Mongolia, independent country is not part of China. And what a great story Charles. Happy for you that you got your freedom

God must've blessed this man. From what I've gathered about Communist China, people generally don't go out of their way to help strangers, especially if it means risking one's own freedom or well-being in some way (like helping a North Korean defector). Miracles are real, and this is it. It fills my heart with joy, knowing how he cried out to the Lord in his darkest hour. It is similar to one of my favorite psalms, Psalm 118: "I called on the Lord in distress; The Lord answered me and set me in a broad place. The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? The Lord is for me among those who help me; Therefore I shall see my desire on those who hate me. It is better to trust in the Lord Than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the Lord Than to put confidence in princes." ☦✝
When you go through such a hunger, you’d do anything to eat what you find. In USA many of us are so privileged that we don’t know what hunger is. It’s called survivor mode to stay alive. He is in pain but I can sense he’s holding his tear. No time to cry but I feel so much love for this man. May God bless this gentleman and hope he find Jesus Christ so he can have the eternal life. This could’ve been so much better hadn’t you two interrupted him as much as y’all did. It was ridiculous. Especially the one in the pink shirt. Even after explaining things as clear as he did he was still interrupted. Whether it’s a conversation or not he should’ve been able to talk about his experiences without being stopped every 5 seconds. Charles even said let me tell my story that should’ve been a reminder to be a proper interviewer. Let people finish then ask questions.
I really just watched it to the end because of Ryu, but honestly this two guys are rude, that is when you see people who has had it easy their whole life think of it as something you can question, kind of make fun of, and to think it is funny to question him about his life in those certain ways they did, man you should treat him with not a bit, much more respect than what you did. If anyone's wondering, 장진 (長津/ChangJin), is the county where toughest battle of the Korean War was fought. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Chosin_Reservoir) In English, it's called the "Battle of Chosin", because we didn't have enough Korean interpreters at the time, we used a lot of our Japanese Americans to act as translators (for several reasons: One of them, was prior to the war, Korea was a colony of Japan's where they had forced Koreans to learn and speak Japanese, and without much maps of Korea of our own, we had to utilize maps that the Japanese had drawn up.)
Hated when he kept interrupted his story with questions that he already spoken about. Even the guest got fustated by saying 'can i just tell my story'. Enjoyed the story telling, felt i was there in some parts.

The interviewers don't seem to be listening and keep asking Charles questions about facts that he has already given: Eg his father lived 12 hours away from the border and then they ask him 'does your father live near the border.?' No wonder the interviewer took 2 hours. At one stage Charles even says ' he guys let me tell my story.'
Charles and us go way back. The edited version of this story is smoother, but this is one of the first times he told the story. It needed massaging big time
I noticed that, he explained what kind of jobs they did at the detention camp and 2 mins later he asked him what kind of work they did lol shit happens tho

I struggle with Yeonmi's narrative having watched this. I just came from her interview on this channel right before and she talks about stuff like NKs having no concept of emotions or love but Charles tells a very different story in terms of culture
Yeomi,exasgerates on her stories about her life in NK,50% of her stories are made up,and exasgerated..imo,but no doubt Life in NK,is hard and horrible for alot of their ppl.
Don’t you think even within NK there can be different experiences and ways of life? I forget how old Yeonmi was when she escaped but I imagine peoples perspectives will be very different based on what their lives were like and how old they were when they left. Nothing is black and white even within the people of NK
They had different upbringing as well. He came from a family with political connections. His family was much better off than Yeonmis family (Still awful of course). Its the same thing as comparing somewhere like Malibu, to a poor part of New Mexico. Your lives are VASTLY different, despite being in the same country. Yeonmi was also a girl, rape is much less of an issue for men. Most of her horror stories have to do with her and her mother being trafficked. That's something he would not have to deal with since he is a boy. @@jadesx96

It’s horrific anywhere, but I’ll never forget seeing those images of children. They didn’t have an ounce of fat, completely skin and bone. To think the NK, government, were the ones who needed to be bribed to get outside help into the country. Anyone able to sit back and watch ppl suffer like that, aren’t human.

Inchon, Korea 1950. I was the best cook Uncle Sam ever saw, slinging hash for the Fighting 103rd. As we marched north, our supply lines were getting thin. One day a couple of GIs found a crate, inside were six hundred pounds of prime Texas steer. At least it once was prime. The Use date was three weeks past, but I was arrogant, I was brash, I thought if I used just the right spices, cooked it long enough...I went too far. I over seasoned it. Men were keeling over all around me. I can still hear the retching, the screaming. I sent sixteen of my own men to the latrines that night. They were just boys. Bobby Colby all that kid wanted to do was go home. Well he went home alright, with a crater in his colon the size of a cutlet. Had to sit him on a cork the eighteen-hour flight home! Anyway....we delivered the bomb and I'll never touch a spatula again!!

This interview was VERY hard to watch😢 More like watching an interrogation not an interview. The way they interrupted him every minute of this video is so uncomfortable to watch. He doesn’t hardly ever get to finish a sentence. He’s side tracked while trying to keep a flow to his timeline. This is terrible and he had such a heroic story to tell☹️😞 Of all of the interviews I’ve watched of NK escapees, this was by far the hardest to watch because how terrible they treated him.
I completely agree. I have watched many interviews and this was very difficult to watch imo; they kept interrupting him and unnecessarily disrupting the flow and his train of thought making it impossible for him to finish his sentence.

I was stationed 13 miles from the DMZ 2015-16 and it always haunted me how much different life was just minutes north from me. Charles you are so brave and I congratulate you on your citizenship! Such a powerful story that needs to be heard by everyone.

I love this podcast! However, I'm so glad you do not often include a second interviewer - or in this case interrogator. That guy is hard to listen to. He interrupts constantly and states the utterly obvious over and over.

Forget about James Bond, his story is that of an action hero all on its own. Escaping N Korea twice, finding himself in the middle of nowhere in China after three days walking without food or water and unable to speak the language. From there not too many then make it to the US. Amazing story about his drive to live a free man is inspiring. From London, UK

I watched Yeonmi Park on Joe Rogan years ago and watched her again recently and then watched her on many other channels. Now I’m watching about other NK defectors and the stories are truly heartbreaking. It’s also incredibly interesting to realize this is going on right now. 😢 I wish these people the best and I pray the ones stuck there get an opportunity for true freedom. God Bless them. 🙏🏻

I just saw Park’s interviews (2 of them) and found them so moving and heartbreaking- all of them. Anyway- I didn’t think there were inconsistencies, but I wonder what you found. I’m also listening while I’m at work so I could have missed something
@@paolamadrid206 just listening to how he describes growing up compared to how she talks about growing up. The way he talks about growing up, it wasn't as bad as her growing up. BUT I suppose she's older then him and she's talking about the 90s and he's talking about the 00s.

I believe Yeoni dramatized a lot of her story. She is now a republican propaganda tool, I obviously cannot say for fact. I just got a weird vibe from her stories, her words are very careful.

What an amazing young man, i wish every American was as humble and brave as him. GOD was absolutely watching over him, i have no doubt especially when the motorcycle guy showed up and helped him when he needed it the most. What a testimony!!!!
@Stacia Renee, if there was a god was watching over him, why did he put this kid through torture for 17 years and then what, yawn and say, well maybe I'll save this one? This is a story of an incredibly strong, resilient person who had the courage to fight for his freedom even though he risked torture and death. Nothing supernatural about it.
I watched the whole video because I wanted to hear the whole story about Charles. Honestly, the two interviewers really didn’t know how to interview people and ask questions. They always interrupted him while he’s telling the story. Why not just let him to tell his story ? If you have any questions, you can ask later after finishing telling his whole story.

I gotta go find this story where he's actually allowed to tell it. I get that it's THEIR show, Idt anyone will lose sight of that; but to have NO self control; speaking compulsively, making jokes, asking dumb questions & making even dumber comments incessantly-after Charles speaks a couple sentences, is just torturous. Maybe THEY should just tell it. The poor guy forgets where he was & loses his story telling stride throughout the charade, due to their nonsense. Ugh. Way to show respect & gratitude. O wait; or is it that HE owes YOU? Is that the problem?

1:50:00 let me clarify this part as a Mongolian. Mongolia is a democratic country which doesn’t deport north korean refugees or any other refugees back to their respective countries. If something we even help them to contact south korean embassy so that they can go there safely. In this part when he said “if they caught north koreans deep in south china, for example mongolia” i hope he was refering to inner mongolia (which is an autonomous region in china) BUT Mongolia, independent country is not part of China.

God must've blessed this man. From what I've gathered about Communist China, people generally don't go out of their way to help strangers, especially if it means risking one's own freedom or well-being in some way (like helping a North Korean defector). Miracles are real, and this is it. It fills my heart with joy, knowing how he cried out to the Lord in his darkest hour. It is similar to one of my favorite psalms, Psalm 118:
"I called on the Lord in distress;
The Lord answered me and set me in a broad place.
The Lord is on my side;
I will not fear.
What can man do to me?
The Lord is for me among those who help me;
Therefore I shall see my desire on those who hate me.

When you go through such a hunger, you’d do anything to eat what you find. In USA many of us are so privileged that we don’t know what hunger is. It’s called survivor mode to stay alive. He is in pain but I can sense he’s holding his tear. No time to cry but I feel so much love for this man. May God bless this gentleman and hope he find Jesus Christ so he can have the eternal life. This could’ve been so much better hadn’t you two interrupted him as much as y’all did. It was ridiculous. Especially the one in the pink shirt. Even after explaining things as clear as he did he was still interrupted. Whether it’s a conversation or not he should’ve been able to talk about his experiences without being stopped every 5 seconds. Charles even said let me tell my story that should’ve been a reminder to be a proper interviewer. Let people finish then ask questions.

I really just watched it to the end because of Ryu, but honestly this two guys are rude, that is when you see people who has had it easy their whole life think of it as something you can question, kind of make fun of, and to think it is funny to question him about his life in those certain ways they did, man you should treat him with not a bit, much more respect than what you did. The one guy with the microphone questioning him; ''Oh I was there!'' trying to make him self superior, yes we know you have traveled, So what OMG you guys really should improve on the way you treat your guest.
Haven't heard the full story yet, but I've been binging these kinds of videos. It's pretty amazing that this guy didn't give up--and yet I'll give up when things even get a teeny tiny bit difficult. Incredibly inspiring.

If anyone's wondering, 장진 (長津/ChangJin), is the county where toughest battle of the Korean War was fought. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Chosin_Reservoir) In English, it's called the "Battle of Chosin", because we didn't have enough Korean interpreters at the time, we used a lot of our Japanese Americans to act as translators (for several reasons: One of them, was prior to the war, Korea was a colony of Japan's where they had forced Koreans to learn and speak Japanese, and without much maps of Korea of our own, we had to utilize maps that the Japanese had drawn up.)

Hated when he kept interrupted his story with questions that he already spoken about. Even the guest got fustated by saying 'can i just tell my story'. Enjoyed the story telling, felt i was there in some parts.

It *is* a podcast, not a one on one interview, it's a different Vibe. I just watched a one on one interview with Y Parks (not going to butcher her first name) and am enjoying this interview just as much. My #1 and really only podcast is Distractible which is 3 guys and the convo flows like this too.
The interviewers don't seem to be listening and keep asking Charles questions about facts that he has already given: Eg his father lived 12 hours away from the border and then they ask him 'does your father live near the border.?' No wonder the interviewer took 2 hours. At one stage Charles even says ' he guys let me tell my story.'
Charles and us go way back. The edited version of this story is smoother, but this is one of the first times he told the story. It needed massaging big time
I noticed that, he explained what kind of jobs they did at the detention camp and 2 mins later he asked him what kind of work they did lol shit happens tho

It was a good interview. He is one of the few defectors I've seen that thinks reunification will happen. It shows he is a true optimist.
I think this would have been a better show if you would have let him talk more instead of interrupting them.
I would be interested to see Charles and Yeonmi Park on an interview together. Her story shows what a "unconnected " family lives like.
I struggle with Yeonmi's narrative having watched this. I just came from her interview on this channel right before and she talks about stuff like NKs having no concept of emotions or love but Charles tells a very different story in terms of culture
Yeomi,exasgerates on her stories about her life in NK,50% of her stories are made up,and exasgerated..imo,but no doubt Life in NK,is hard and horrible for alot of their ppl.
Don’t you think even within NK there can be different experiences and ways of life? I forget how old Yeonmi was when she escaped but I imagine peoples perspectives will be very different based on what their lives were like and how old they were when they left. Nothing is black and white even within the people of NK
They had different upbringing as well. He came from a family with political connections. His family was much better off than Yeonmis family (Still awful of course). Its the same thing as comparing somewhere like Malibu, to a poor part of New Mexico. Your lives are VASTLY different, despite being in the same country. Yeonmi was also a girl, rape is much less of an issue for men. Most of her horror stories have to do with her and her mother being trafficked. That's something he would not have to deal with since he is a boy. @@jadesx96

It's worth taking a listen because she's unfortunately taken up too much of the conversation while likely embellishing and dramatizing. It's hard to believe anything she says or said. It’s horrific anywhere, but I’ll never forget seeing those images of children. They didn’t have an ounce of fat, completely skin and bone. To think the NK, government, were the ones who needed to be bribed to get outside help into the country. Anyone able to sit back and watch ppl suffer like that, aren’t human.
My goodness the poor man must've thought "I escaped the north korean psychopathic regime, labor camps, torture interrogations, brainwashing and I am trying to tell my story to two 11 year old girls who find it funny to interrupt me every 2 seconds......gee....how wonderful I've given my time to be treated so well by these little gitls"

Inchon, Korea 1950. I was the best cook Uncle Sam ever saw, slinging hash for the Fighting 103rd. As we marched north, our supply lines were getting thin. One day a couple of GIs found a crate, inside were six hundred pounds of prime Texas steer. At least it once was prime. The Use date was three weeks past, but I was arrogant, I was brash, I thought if I used just the right spices, cooked it long enough...I went too far. I over seasoned it. Men were keeling over all around me. I can still hear the retching, the screaming. I sent sixteen of my own men to the latrines that night. They were just boys. Bobby Colby all that kid wanted to do was go home. Well he went home alright, with a crater in his colon the size of a cutlet. Had to sit him on a cork the eighteen-hour flight home! Anyway....we delivered the bomb and I'll never touch a spatula again!!

Charles was doing just fine on his own. You guys weren’t listening… fixating on your next questions instead, which in many instances he’d actually addressed. So many times you interrupted him for clarity which he’d already provided. This sentiment has been expressed many times in the comments, so thank you for interviewing Charles, but learn from the constructive feedback instead of telling us “that’s how interviews work.” If the guest stops talking, then go ahead and apply your “interview skills.”
